00:41A new chapter in the trade war between Europe and the U.S. unfolded as letters got exchanged
00:47online on Saturday.
00:49United States President Donald Trump said he will raise tariffs on European products to
00:5330 percent starting on the 1st of August.
00:56He did so via a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted on his
01:02social media platform Truth Social.
01:06He added that the 30 percent is far less than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit
01:11disparity and that the rate could further increase if the EU decided to retaliate.
01:16The European Commission immediately responded with their own written statement.
01:22It said Europe remained ready to continue working towards an agreement by Trump's deadline, but
01:27was ready to take all necessary steps to safeguard its interests.
01:31It is not the first letter the U.S. leader has sent, as Trump is currently in an announcement
01:37blitz of new tariffs with allies and foes alike.
01:40Trump has now issued tariff conditions on a total of 24 countries as well as the European
01:46Union.
01:47Russia launched 26 missiles and almost 600 drones at Ukraine overnight, the country's President
01:58Volodymyr Zelensky said.
02:00The western regions of the country were hit the hardest, including the cities of Lviv,
02:06Tchernivsty and Lutsk.
02:09Lviv experienced its most severe strike since the beginning of Russia's invasion, the city's
02:14mayor has said.
02:15Meanwhile, in Tchernivsty, at least two people were killed by fallen debris and at least 14
02:21others were injured, including four who are in critical condition.
02:25The latest attack comes as Russia has significantly intensified its all-out war on Ukraine, launching
02:31a record number of drones and missiles in recent weeks.
02:35Zelensky reminded Western allies to impose additional sanctions and said the war can only
02:41be stopped through strength.
02:47Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico has said his country aims to reach a deal with European
02:52partners by Tuesday on ending Russian gas supplies.
02:57So far, Slovakia has blocked the 18th sanctions package to be implemented in response to Russia's
03:02full-scale invasion of Ukraine, expressing concerns that the proposed phase-out of all Russian
03:07fossil fuels by 2028 could damage the country's economic interests.
03:13Fico has said he wants guarantees from Europe that his country will not suffer from the end
03:18of Russian gas supplies.
03:20Slovakia gets most of its gas from Russia and holds a long-term contract with Russia's
03:25Gazprom that runs through 2034.
03:27Bratislava argues that ending the supply could lead to damaged claims from Gazprom.
03:34Fico told reporters in Bratislava on Saturday that he wants to resolve the issue, stating that
03:39tensions are rising on all sides.
03:41Several new sites were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on Friday.
03:52Among them were several European sites, including the famous fairy-tale castles of Bavaria's
03:57King Ludwig II, which have attracted millions of tourists for over 140 years.
04:03The new sites also included ancient structures, such as the megalithic Carnac Stones in France
04:08and the Minoan Palatial Centres on the Greek island of Crete.
04:12Both date from several thousand years BC.
04:16Although the World Heritage title does not bring any financial support, it does ensure
04:21further international attention and cultural prestige.
04:25At 60 listed sites, Italy has the most of any country.
04:30Some examples include the archaeological site of Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.
04:34Other well-known sites across the world are the Great Wall of China, Egypt's Pyramids
04:40of Giza, and the Taj Mahal in India.
