00:00Israel and Iran traded several rounds of new strikes overnight into Sunday,
00:07in an unprecedented escalation since Israel launched its surprise attack on Iran on Friday.
00:13Several people were reported killed in the Tel Aviv area as well as in the northern town of Tamra.
00:19Rescuers were working through the night to retrieve people from collapsed buildings,
00:24with emergency services saying over 100 people were injured across the country.
00:30Israel's military said early on Sunday that it targeted Iran's defense ministry headquarters in Tehran.
00:37It also said it targeted sites it alleged were associated with Iran's nuclear program around the capital,
00:43claiming the sites were related to the Iranian regime's nuclear weapons project.
00:49U.S. intelligence agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency have repeatedly said Iran was not pursuing a nuclear weapon
00:57before Israel unleashed its campaign of airstrikes on Iran.
01:07Iran's Revolutionary Guard commander said closing the Strait of Hormuz is under consideration in response to Israeli attacks.
01:14But what could this mean for Europe?
01:16The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most strategically vital choke points in the world,
01:20and any blockade by Iran would pose serious risks for Europe.
01:24Roughly 20% of global oil and a significant portion of natural gas pass through the Strait.
01:30If Iran blocks it, global oil prices would spike and Europe could face energy shortages.
01:36A sudden oil price surge would increase inflation, energy costs and disrupt industries across Europe.
01:43Manufacturing, transport and agriculture would be especially vulnerable.
01:48Beyond oil, the Strait is a key route for global shipping.
01:51Disruption could delay European imports of raw materials.
01:55A blockade could also trigger military confrontations involving U.S. or EU navies, risking a broader regional war.
02:06French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that a top-level U.N. conference on Palestinian statehood,
02:12scheduled for next week, has been postponed.
02:16He cited security concerns amid rising tensions in the region after Israel launched large-scale strikes on Iran on Friday.
02:23So I say it with the most clarity, the risk of this march towards nuclear weapons by Iran
02:30threatens the region, Europe, and more generally, collective stability.
02:36We cannot live in a world where Iran would have the atomic bomb,
02:41because it is an existential threat and a threat for our security to all.
02:46Amid surging tensions, France as well as Germany are increasing protection of Israeli assets and Jewish sites.
02:53Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized their support for Israel,
02:58but also urged both sides to refrain from further escalation.
03:02The grand military parade that U.S. President Donald Trump had been wanting for years
03:12barreled down the streets of Washington, D.C. on Saturday,
03:15complete with tanks, troops, and a 21-gun salute.
03:19The parade, which coincided with Trump's 79th birthday, commemorated the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army.
03:28It played out against protests around the country by those who decry Trump as a dictator and would-be king.
03:36The so-called No Kings rallies unfolded in hundreds of cities, designed to counter what organizers said were Trump's plans to feed his ego on his 79th birthday.
03:48While mostly calm, a demonstration in L.A. turned chaotic when police began charging at the crowd and firing tear gas.
03:56The Californian city has been the center of rising tensions as Marines and National Guard were deployed to the city during protests related to immigration raids.
04:10A Minnesota lawmaker and her husband are dead, and another lawmaker and his wife are wounded in shootings at their homes early on Saturday.
04:18Former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her spouse were killed.
04:22Authorities say the attacker posed as a police officer.
04:25Governor Tim Walz has described the shootings as targeted political violence.
04:30A major manhunt is now underway for a suspect, with the FBI joining the investigation.
04:35Due to the security situation, Minnesota authorities cancelled all of the state's No Kings protests, which are against President Trump's policies.
