00:00A local emergency was declared and 10-hour curfew was issued in parts of downtown Los Angeles
00:05as anti-Trump immigration policy protests continued to rage.
00:11A mass and candlelit vigil were held in Austria's second-largest city of Graz
00:16to mourn the victims of the deadly school shooting.
00:21Israel deported Swedish activist Greta Thunberg along with three others
00:25aboard the Gaza 8 flotilla after it was seized a few days ago.
00:30The European Commission has formally proposed new sanctions on Russian energy exports and financial institutions.
00:40Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared a local emergency and issued a 10-hour curfew
00:46in an effort to stop vandalism and looting amid the unfolding chaos.
00:51The curfew will run from 8 p.m. on Tuesday to 6 a.m. on Wednesday local time
00:55and affects an area just over 2.5 square kilometers in downtown Los Angeles.
01:01Bass says the decision had to be taken after 23 businesses in the area were victim to looting and theft.
01:07The curfew does not, however, apply to residents of the designated area,
01:11accredited media personnel, and law enforcement officers.
01:15It comes as protests in the city continue to rage against U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration raids,
01:21part of his latest crackdown.
01:24The riots were further exacerbated after Trump authorized the deployment of 5,000 troops,
01:29mainly National Guard, but also Marines to quell the riots.
01:33The deployment of troops came of his own accord and without Governor Gavin Newsom's request or approval.
01:38Newsom has slammed Trump over the decision which he called unlawful
01:43as he accused the U.S. president of subverting democracy.
01:46He also warned other states that California is the start,
01:50but not the end of Trump's growing authoritarianism.
01:53The Democrat governor has also filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration
01:57and asked the federal court to block National Guard troops from assisting in immigration raids.
02:03A judge has set a hearing on the matter for Thursday.
02:05Several hundred people attended a mass in the second largest Austrian city of Graz
02:16to mourn the victims of a deadly school shooting.
02:20A former student at a high school in the city opened fire,
02:23killing 10 people and injuring many more before taking his own life, according to police.
02:30There is no immediate information on the motive behind the attack.
02:33The 21-year-old shooter, who held no previous criminal record,
02:38used two weapons to execute the attack, both believed to have been owned legally.
02:44Austrian Chancellor Christian Stoker, Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler,
02:49and Foreign Minister Biet-Meinl Reisinger all attended the mass at Graz Cathedral.
02:54A candle-lit vigil was also held in the city's main square to commemorate the victims.
02:59Dozens of the city's residents attended the event to pay their respects,
03:04including police forces who responded to the emergency.
03:10Israel deported Greta Thunberg, along with three other activists aboard the Gaza 8 flotilla,
03:16which was seized a few days ago.
03:18Upon her arrival in Paris while on her way to her home country of Sweden,
03:22Thunberg spoke of the conditions her and her fellow activists were subjected to.
03:26But the 22-year-old, who boasts an impressive 20 million following between social media platforms,
03:32Instagram and X, said the seizure of the ship was not the primary crime Israel committed.
03:37The real story is that there is a genocide going on in Gaza
03:42and a systematic starvation following the siege and blockade now,
03:46which is leading to food, medicine, water that are desperately needed to get into Gaza
03:52is prevented from doing so.
03:54Israel rejects Thunberg's claims of poor treatment,
03:58adding that the entire trip was nothing more than a gimmick.
04:02Greta, persona non-Greta, received food and good treatment.
04:10Israel acted in a peaceful manner.
04:13I want to be clear, this persona non-Greta will not be allowed to stay in Israel.
04:21Greta and her friends brought in a tiny amount of aid on their celebrity yacht.
04:28It did not help the people of Gaza.
04:31This was nothing but a ridiculous gimmick.
04:36A publicity stunt and nothing more.
04:38Seven others who were passengers on the Gaza aid ship remain in Israel,
04:43where they'll be detained for 96 hours before being presented to a judge for deportation.
04:49The four who were released had agreed to sign documents consenting to voluntary removal.
04:54I'm very worried about them.
04:56We heard many different messages pointing towards that they would not make it easy.
05:06And there were troubles with being able to see lawyers.
05:10So I'm very much calling for their immediate release.
05:14The Swedish activist pledged to continue fighting for the Palestinian people.
05:20She also urged her supporters to demand their governments to exert pressure on Israel
05:24to allow the entry of more aid and bring an end to the war.
05:31The United Kingdom will impose sanctions on far-right Israeli ministers
05:36Bezalos Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir.
05:38The UK Foreign Office said the ministers have incited extremist violence
05:43and serious abuses of Palestinian human rights.
05:47They will have their assets frozen and face travel bans,
05:50a move Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has condemned.
05:53It is outrageous that elected representatives and members of the government
06:00are subjected to this kind of measures.
06:05I discussed it earlier today with Prime Minister Netanyahu
06:09and we will hold a special government meeting early next week
06:15to decide on our response to this unacceptable decision.
06:20Both ministers have acknowledged and criticized the sanctions following the announcement.
06:24The United States don't offend me.
06:26I will be forced to defend our government, our people.
06:32I will be forced to defend and do that they don't have humanitarian aid to Hamas.
06:36But the political reaction will be forced to defend the French.
06:38We will not return to these days.
06:40We will have already one time to prevent us from being able to sit on our land.
06:45We will not do this again.
06:46We will be forced to defend the government.
06:48We will continue to defend.
06:49Both Ben Gavir and Smotrich have promoted the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank,
06:55have called to permanently resettle Gaza's population
06:57and campaigned against allowing aid into the territory.
07:04The European Commission has formally proposed new sanctions
07:08on Russian energy exports and financial institutions.
07:11The measures would curb operations of firms linked to the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea,
07:19expand the blacklist of Russia's so-called shadow fleet,
07:22and target Kremlin-backed banks that facilitate international fund transfers.
07:27We are reiterating the call for a full, unconditional ceasefire of at least 30 days.
07:39This pause in hostilities could serve as a vital step towards reducing civilian suffering,
07:46allow space for meaningful talks for a genuine peace.
07:50If approved by member states, it would mark the EU's 18th sanctions package against Moscow
07:56since the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
08:01The most notable feature of the package is a proposed reduction
08:04in the G7-imposed price gap on Russian oil,
08:08first introduced in December of 2022.
08:10Russian overnight attack on Ukraine's capital damaged St. Sophia Cathedral,
08:19one of the most famous and the most cherished monuments in Ukraine,
08:22and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
08:25Officials reported that a blast wave destroyed the cornice on the main apse of the cathedral,
08:30damaging the monument that embodies the country's spiritual and cultural heritage.
08:35Ukraine's culture minister said, quote,
08:36last night the enemy struck at the very heart of our identity again.
08:41Makula Tuchitsky called St. Sophia's Cathedral, quote,
08:43a holy place that has survived through centuries and symbolizes the birth of our nationhood.
08:49The 11th century cathedral is the soul of all Ukraine.
08:52Russia is raging its war not only against our cities,
08:55it is waging a war against our culture, memory and future, unquote.
09:00The management of St. Sophia Cathedral has informed UNESCO about the damage caused to the historic site
09:06by a recent Russian airstrike.
09:10The European debate on minors' access to social networks has begun.
09:23Three European Union member states, France, Spain and Greece,
09:25are putting forward the idea of a digital majority,
09:28an age below which it would be forbidden to connect to platforms.
09:32The aim is to protect teenagers and children from dangerous online content.
09:36The three countries believe that the algorithms used by social networks expose the very young to addictive content
10:04that can lead to increased anxiety or depression.
10:08They also argue that excessive exposure may limit the development of certain skills and alter cognitive abilities.
10:15The European Union has enacted legislation in the form of the Digital Services Regulation.
10:20The text tackles illegal content such as hate speech, terrorism and child pornography.
10:25For industry representatives, new legislation appears premature at this stage.
10:33At this stage, we think that the new rules need to first play out properly.
10:38We have not seen all the effects yet.
10:40The Digital Services Act for most companies has only entered into force last year.
10:44And as I said, we're still waiting for some guidance on the new minor protection obligations.
10:48That's why I think it's a little rushed at this stage to already discuss new rules.
10:53And I think it's also really important that we take much more into account the reality and the implications for minors in such a crude ban.
11:02The European Commission is currently working on an age verification application.
11:07Last month, it also published draft guidelines to protect minors.
11:11It proposes measures to verify the age of users or to set children's accounts to private by default.
11:16The institution is also conducting investigations against TikTok, Instagram and Facebook as part of its efforts to protect minors.
