00:00:30As Christians, what is our focus?
00:00:57If our focus is off, if our focus is not on God, we're never really going to understand
00:01:05real power, real strength.
00:01:07Sometimes, in this messed up old world, you find yourself in some uncomfortable situations.
00:01:13Anybody ever gotten stuck in a bad spot?
00:01:16Right?
00:01:16Sometimes it's things that are out of all of our control.
00:01:20In life, there are times where you take shots.
00:01:25Because it's a battle out there, and the enemy is trying to seek and destroy us.
00:01:31He wants to destroy your families.
00:01:33He wants to destroy you personally.
00:01:37You've got to be prepared in advance.
00:01:40That's where the Bible gives you your training.
00:01:42Get inside of that!
00:01:45Hey, hey, hey!
00:01:462.
00:01:562.
00:01:563.
00:01:573.
00:01:582.
00:01:593.
00:02:002.
00:02:013.
00:02:023.
00:02:034.
00:02:054.
00:02:052.
00:02:064.
00:02:064.
00:02:075.
00:02:085.
00:02:09Ich bin Paul Buras.
00:02:20Ich bin an Associate Pastor hier bei Victory Church in Rochester, New York.
00:02:39A lot of people have definitions of what church is.
00:02:42I definitely don't fit that mold.
00:02:47God is way too big to be stuck in a beautiful building with stained glass.
00:02:52He calls us to go into the places in the world that nobody else would necessarily go.
00:02:57Jesus came to find you, and He wants to give you a life that's worth living,
00:03:01and He wants you to spend the rest of your days doing something that matters.
00:03:04My dad was definitely my mentor, and the guy that got me started in fighting and wrestling and stuff.
00:03:10Dad and I would fight almost every day growing up.
00:03:12It was relentless.
00:03:13So, for instance, it may have been dealing with...
00:03:16From a young age, Paul was a very adept fighter, and he was always very small, by the way.
00:03:24Here he was fighting senior high wrestling, and he was 80 pounds, but he knew how to use his body, and he knew how to use his speed.
00:03:32I love fighting.
00:03:35Just the release of energy.
00:03:38I mean, it's physics.
00:03:39Basically, you bend the guy the opposite direction that God intended.
00:03:44It's one of the only sports named in the Bible.
00:03:47There's actually a cool passage in Genesis where God wrestled with Jacob and submitted him, tapped his hip.
00:03:52I would say that I had a rough patch in my life.
00:03:59Kind of put the Bible down.
00:04:02I was angry and bitter.
00:04:05You know, had a short fuse.
00:04:07Somebody look at you, wrong you.
00:04:09You know, just handle it the wrong way.
00:04:15Kettlebells to Madison Ball.
00:04:16I remember the day I fell to my knees, and I just said, God, I don't want to do things my way anymore.
00:04:20And I begged God's forgiveness and asked him for a second chance.
00:04:24When I came back and I said, you know, Dad, I really need to get my head and heart, you know, focused on Christ again,
00:04:29and I want to use some of my skills and abilities to do that, that's when I started the fight ministry here.
00:04:38Today I want to talk about surrender.
00:04:40Nobody likes the word surrender.
00:04:41Everybody thinks it makes, like, a picture of weakness or being a loser.
00:04:45Surrendering gives you strength.
00:04:47It makes you a better fighter.
00:04:49I've never met anybody that surrendered their life to God that wished they hadn't.
00:04:53And if I really surrender to God, surrender to authority, how much more power and strength you get out of that kind of surrender.
00:04:58So loosen up, stretch out real good, and I'll give you the warm up.
00:05:02Everything we do is about God.
00:05:05Faith is just saturated in what we do.
00:05:08I'm still controlling it here.
00:05:09Now I've got hips controlled, hands controlled, head controlled, three of the four H's.
00:05:14And then we're ready to...
00:05:16There's always critics, you know, certain people in the religious community or certain people outside the religious community that look at it and go,
00:05:23Oh, how could they do that?
00:05:24That's barbaric and this and that.
00:05:26But if they actually came and met us and saw our people and saw the love and saw the friendship
00:05:30and saw how many lives are being changed, then people would go,
00:05:34Okay, it's a little different than what I thought.
00:05:36Come on, put your hands together like this, everybody, come on.
00:05:43I grew up in church.
00:05:58My dad was my pastor.
00:05:59I always knew where I was going to be every Sunday morning and every Wednesday night.
00:06:05I think a huge issue we have in our society right now is Christians need to stop turning people off to Christ.
00:06:11We have to show love.
00:06:13We have to be love.
00:06:15Our job is simply to love people.
00:06:19But yeah, I'm a lover.
00:06:20I love my wife.
00:06:21We've been together for 15 years.
00:06:26We met my freshman year in high school.
00:06:28That was a while ago.
00:06:30I think we've been together almost half of our lives.
00:06:34He's so mild-mannered and kind and giving and he was actually a theater geek in high school.
00:06:46Preston was such a gentle boy.
00:06:49Preston's always had a heart to be a pastor.
00:06:51He's always loved people, taken care of people.
00:06:55I think it's always been pretty clear that he would minister to people.
00:06:58Pray, Father, your blessing to come on Preston today.
00:07:00My dad's always been a big supporter.
00:07:02Started wrestling because my dad did it, my uncles did it, and they were great men,
00:07:08and I wanted to try to do my best to follow whatever they did.
00:07:11Go, Preston!
00:07:13I was not a naturally gifted wrestler.
00:07:16My first season was terrible.
00:07:18I won one match, and that was it.
00:07:22I came back for the next season and decided I didn't want to lose anymore.
00:07:26I did everything that I could to work harder than anybody else that I was going to have to face on the mat.
00:07:32And that year I went undefeated.
00:07:40When I was about 22 years old, I had a friend that I had known in middle school.
00:07:46I had done some musicals with her.
00:07:48And out of nowhere, I was watching the news and found out that she had been murdered.
00:07:56It shook up my world.
00:07:59And really brought up some questions in my life.
00:08:04Like I said, I was newly married.
00:08:06And I had a real beautiful wife.
00:08:08And heaven forbid anybody want to take her life or take her away from me.
00:08:13I wanted to know that I had the ability to at the very least defend her life.
00:08:18Right.
00:08:20Hoop.
00:08:20Hoop.
00:08:21Hoop.
00:08:21Hoop.
00:08:22Hoop.
00:08:22Hoop.
00:08:22Hoop.
00:08:23Hoop.
00:08:23I had never been in a fist fight before.
00:08:26The first time I ever hit somebody in the face was my first fight in a cage.
00:08:31It felt almost slow motion.
00:08:33It was exhilarating.
00:08:34And I just wanted to keep doing it.
00:08:43I get the question a lot, how far do you want to take this?
00:08:45Do you want to fight professionally?
00:08:47How long are you going to fight?
00:08:48My answer to that is, I'm going to keep fighting until it's not fun anymore.
00:08:52I'd like to have maybe a couple more amateur fights just to kind of work out some kinks in
00:08:57my game.
00:08:58And then maybe go pro and see how far I can go with it.
00:09:02Preston, the pastor of disaster, Hawker!
00:09:07Some people might see Preston being a fighter and a Christian as a conflict.
00:09:16I didn't see a discrepancy when he began to move towards fighting because I knew that
00:09:21whatever he did, he would use it to bring glory and honor to the Lord Jesus.
00:09:25When Preston came up with the idea of having a fight club in the church, it was an easy
00:09:31thing to say yes to.
00:09:32Tough guys need Jesus too.
00:09:34We're attracting all kinds of people.
00:09:43We've got some guys that used to wrestle that just got out of high school that are looking
00:09:47for a new place to compete, kind of like me.
00:09:49We've got some tough guys that just want to get in the cage.
00:09:52We've got some kids that have been bullied that just want to learn how to defend themselves.
00:09:56There's no prerequisite that in order to be a part of our team, you have to come on a
00:10:02Sunday.
00:10:03We just want to love you.
00:10:05Just come as you are.
00:10:07God, thank you for giving us a place to come together.
00:10:09Thanks for keeping us all safe.
00:10:11God, I just pray that you bless us the rest of the week.
00:10:13In Jesus' name, amen.
00:10:14One, two, three, freedom!
00:10:15My name is Father John DeFell.
00:10:34I've been a parish priest for 43 years.
00:10:38It's hard to obey the Lord's command, which is to love the other, even if the other is
00:10:42considered to be your enemy.
00:10:43Jesus is not violent or doesn't endorse violence.
00:10:47Jesus says that all the law and the prophets are collected in this one commandment, that
00:10:51you ought to love one another.
00:10:52That's the challenge really each and every day in our lives, when we have to decide whether
00:10:56or not we're going to listen to Jesus.
00:10:59It is the role of the church to promote human rights.
00:11:02It is the role of the church to protect the dignity of the human person, to really believe
00:11:08that we are the light that can cast out the darkness.
00:11:11Cage fighting does not speak about loving one another.
00:11:15Cage fighting is about hating one another, basically.
00:11:18I mean, just the whole notion of putting people in an enclosed environment like two animals
00:11:22that can beat one another up.
00:11:24Just absolute violence.
00:11:27The body of Christ.
00:11:28Well, when I hear it, there are people who claim to be men of the cloth who are espousing
00:11:33this, and also some people who I've been told are fighting.
00:11:36I can't believe that.
00:11:37I think that that's absolutely ridiculous.
00:11:39He says, Father, forgive them.
00:11:40They know not what they do.
00:11:41I guess we have to say that even about these poor people who, some of whom might be church
00:11:45persons who don't know what they do because they're not really heeding or hearing the word
00:11:51of God.
00:12:02Nice shot.
00:12:03Good.
00:12:04Come on, let's go, let's go.
00:12:05Get your arm free.
00:12:06Now, shoot.
00:12:07Ah, he should have shot right there.
00:12:09My name is John Rankin.
00:12:10I'm the head instructor here at Clarksville Mixed Martial Arts Academy.
00:12:13I'm a former MMA fighter, and I have like 70 pro MMA fights, so I think I'm pretty qualified.
00:12:18When I started Extreme Ministries, it wasn't that I started it to be a fight church.
00:12:41It was just who I am, and so it's what it became.
00:12:44Father, I just thank you for the opportunity to show people what this is really about.
00:12:48I pray for the safety of everybody here.
00:12:50There would be no serious injuries, and that, Father, that you would look down upon this
00:12:54event tonight and be well-pleased with the way your men perform.
00:12:57In Jesus' name we pray.
00:12:59Amen.
00:12:59Amen.
00:13:00All right, guys.
00:13:01I was already born and getting Christian when I started fighting, and I didn't have to rationalize
00:13:04anything.
00:13:05It never even occurred to me that this would be a dilemma for anybody.
00:13:08It really took me back that people would react so strongly to just a sporting event.
00:13:14I just, I couldn't believe it.
00:13:16At the end of the day, it's about reaching people with the gospel, regardless of what
00:13:20you do, to get them, to introduce them into a relationship with Jesus Christ.
00:13:24I couldn't say that this part of my life is more important than a spiritual part of my
00:13:39life, because I think this is spiritual.
00:13:41Punch, punch, punch to the face.
00:13:43Now go for the choke, right there.
00:13:45Punch, punch, punch, punch.
00:13:46I believe the call of the gospel is me to be where lost people are, and lost people
00:13:51are watching MMA.
00:13:53So, I think that's where we should be.
00:13:54Ich weiß, was es bedeutet, dass ich alleine bin.
00:14:24Meine Eltern, ich kann nicht sagen, waren die meisten spirituellen.
00:14:30Growing up in my family, der bad guy gets the most respect.
00:14:34My mother struggled with substance abuse throughout my life.
00:14:39My father spent most of my life in prison for an armed robbery.
00:14:45He got so tired of me seeing him in prison
00:14:47that he actually told me to stop coming.
00:14:51Every son is looking to get that stamp of approval from their father.
00:15:00I never got that stamp of approval.
00:15:02I needed that acceptance.
00:15:07I needed that comfort.
00:15:10And it came from me saying, Jesus, you are my Lord.
00:15:14I believe in you. I believe you died for me.
00:15:16And I know you love me.
00:15:18This year, I started my first church called Fresh Word Ministries.
00:15:26Chris, don't worry about it. Run around, run around.
00:15:29Just take that, roll that back.
00:15:30I have had people say, how can you be a pastor and fight at the same time?
00:15:35And my response is pretty simple, you know?
00:15:39Fighting is what I do. It's not who I am.
00:15:42I was a fighter before I became a pastor.
00:15:48So are you ready for the fight tonight?
00:15:50Yeah, man. We're going to make it happen tonight.
00:15:53It's going to be one to remember. Keep your cell phone out.
00:15:56The last fight you had, you had a minute and 26 seconds.
00:15:58What are we going to get this time?
00:16:00We're going to shoot for a minute and 27.
00:16:02Minute and 27? One 27?
00:16:03One 27.
00:16:04I'm playing that on the past three.
00:16:09This time, I really want to give you all what you all paid for.
00:16:12You know, I want to give y'all a good show, man.
00:16:14I hope so.
00:16:15You gave us what we paid for last time, Sean.
00:16:17Nitro, 126.
00:16:19Not like this. This boy going to know he's been fighting the man.
00:16:24And we're going to have a fresh word Sunday.
00:16:26And chicken and waffles immediately after service.
00:16:29Somebody should say, thank you, Lord.
00:16:31Thank you, Lord.
00:16:32Amen.
00:16:39At the end of the day, there are certain things that are inside everyone.
00:16:43And I believe that if you are a fighter, it's inside of you.
00:16:46You can't take it out.
00:16:51My training is worship.
00:16:52The way I train is worship.
00:16:53The way I even compete is worship.
00:16:56And I don't expect everybody to understand that.
00:16:59Everything I do, I do it as if it's worship to God.
00:17:07The Bible talks about meekness.
00:17:09And meekness is controlled strength.
00:17:11It's having the ability to destroy but choosing not to.
00:17:14There is nowhere in scripture where he says, I just want you to be people's punching bag forever.
00:17:21You know, King David, who was a man after God's own heart, he was a warrior.
00:17:24The Bible says it's time for everything under the sun.
00:17:27David is the only king in the Bible who has never lost a battle.
00:17:33He loved God wholeheartedly, but it was a time for war, and David was there ready to fight.
00:17:39Straight up.
00:17:41There are people who misuse the Bible.
00:17:48There's almost a pick-and-choose kind of way in some communities who call themselves Christian.
00:17:56When it comes to the Word of God, they'll go about trying to find things that support their position rather than letting the Bible speak.
00:18:03You can't tell me that this particular sport, if you want to call it that, in any way can find support in the New Testament.
00:18:14There's absolutely no way that that can be true.
00:18:21This weekend we're having a Muay Thai kickboxing event here.
00:18:25Personally, I would prefer to have a full MMA competition here at the church, but that is not legal in the state of New York still.
00:18:31In fact, right now the legislature is voting on legalizing MMA in the state of New York.
00:18:36So, someday soon we'd love to be able to have an MMA competition here.
00:18:39But for now, it's Muay Thai.
00:18:49The whole reason we're having the fights here is so that we can bring people in and tell them about God.
00:18:52The hope is that through the fight I can create a relationship with the person I'm fighting and extend Christ to him.
00:18:58If I win the fight, it's because God gave me that fight. It's not anything I've done.
00:19:04It's already been decided who won. It's just you wait to find out what happens.
00:19:08There you go, go, go, go, go!
00:19:18There you go, baby, come on!
00:19:20Get inside of that!
00:19:22Inside, inside!
00:19:23Hit that, hit that!
00:19:25Watch those knees, Greeks!
00:19:27Watch those knees!
00:19:28Oh, they both got each other.
00:19:35Hold on, Screef. Hold on, baby.
00:19:43Never seen that before.
00:19:45Dear God, thank you for the win.
00:19:48Thank you that he's okay and he's walking.
00:19:51Lord, I pray there's no damage, nothing swells up bad later.
00:19:54And God, I just thank you for, just for the safety out there.
00:19:57In Jesus' name, amen.
00:19:58Amen.
00:19:59You know, really, for as rough as people think it is, there's not that many injuries.
00:20:20I've had way more of my friends get hurt on their soccer league twisting an ankle.
00:20:24We have very few injuries.
00:20:27Paul has had, I think, 10 concussions.
00:20:31And, you know, I went, when we first were married, I went with him to the neurologist.
00:20:37And the neurologist said, in quotes, Paul, if you want to remember when to pull your pants down when you pee,
00:20:44then you need to stop fighting.
00:20:46You know, I think, oh, man, it'd be fun to, you know, get one or two more fights
00:20:49and go do some sanction fights.
00:20:51And I think I would do well.
00:20:53But then I look and I say, you know, my wife is not a big fight fan.
00:20:58The fighting for me is not my thing.
00:21:04I guess I just, I've taken some classes in traumatic brain injury.
00:21:09And so I know what's going on up there when there's someone drilling someone's head and there's blood.
00:21:14And I'm like, oh, I'm not afraid of blood.
00:21:17But I just think, what's going on in here?
00:21:27Nice.
00:21:28Without question, I wish I was out there sometimes.
00:21:30Yeah, yeah.
00:21:31I figure at 35, I'm a little old for this work, but not past it.
00:21:36I might have another one in me sometime, I don't know.
00:21:51I think in a lot of ways, a lot of churches kind of lack a men's ministry.
00:21:58At our church, we'd like to build a better community for our men.
00:22:05We do our fight team on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
00:22:09No rest, just jump knee.
00:22:11Ten seconds, go hard.
00:22:13We even are known to hold a UFC event at our church and our ministry center.
00:22:20We're having a UFC party tonight here at the church.
00:22:24This isn't a Bible study type thing.
00:22:27It's really about building relationships with each other.
00:22:31Boom!
00:22:32Boom!
00:22:33He broke his nose.
00:22:34That crack was his nose.
00:22:35He's been there a few times.
00:22:40My favorite UFC fighters, Ben Henderson is nice.
00:22:43He's so good.
00:22:44He's so quick.
00:22:45He can't be submitted.
00:22:47The guy is phenomenal.
00:22:48He's the next big thing.
00:22:50I know that every time they put a camera in his face, he's thanking Jesus.
00:22:55He's representing Christ to the fullest.
00:22:58So I try to model myself after him.
00:23:01He's just malicious.
00:23:02He's a great fighter.
00:23:14I'm Smooth Benson Henderson, the current UFC lightweight champion in the world.
00:23:18As a kid, I knew that as an adult when I grew up, I wanted to be just a good person.
00:23:26I wanted to love Christ and I wanted to not be ashamed of it.
00:23:29For me personally, my faith is throughout everything I do in life.
00:23:34It's not like, oh, I separate and I chop it up.
00:23:36Okay, well, I'm a Christian when it comes to this.
00:23:38But then when I'm inside of a cage, it's another story.
00:23:41For me personally, I carry my faith inside the cage with me.
00:23:45It allows me to relax.
00:23:47It allows me to breathe and realize there are a lot bigger things to life
00:23:51than whether I win or lose this one little fight.
00:23:57There are actually quite a few fighters who are very strong Christians in the UFC.
00:24:01I think it's cool that pound for pound, one of the best fighters in the world,
00:24:04John Jones, is right here from Rochester.
00:24:06You know, a guy that shares his faith.
00:24:09He's not perfect. Nobody is.
00:24:11I guarantee he hasn't messed up as much as I have in my life.
00:24:13I probably wouldn't be in the position I am today if I wasn't a Christian.
00:24:16So it's a huge part of who I am.
00:24:18And, you know, I'm grateful for it.
00:24:24I've had a lot of people advise me to not speak about being a Christian.
00:24:28They said it would make me more marketable.
00:24:30And, you know, I don't want to be that guy.
00:24:33You know, I want to be a guy who shares my faith and shares with people what I believe.
00:24:38The number one question I get asked is how can you be a fighter and call yourself a Christian?
00:24:46And I'm just like, you know what? I read the Bible, especially in the New Testament.
00:24:50It talks about God gives a lot of people different spiritual gifts.
00:24:53And I tell them, mine just happens to be the spiritual gift of laying hands on people.
00:25:00My number one goal is to glorify God with what he's given me.
00:25:03That's my whole purpose in life is to glorify him and make him known.
00:25:07If I can do that through fighting, rock and roll.
00:25:10If I can't, then I'd quit.
00:25:12I definitely believe we're going to see more and more Christians rise in those ranks and men who are more bold about their faith.
00:25:19I think the overlapping of mixed martial arts and Christianity too is just a real bold statement of how popular mixed martial arts has become.
00:25:28Years ago, you know, people hated us for fighting and now, you know, it's a lot more mainstream.
00:25:33We could go to the mall here in town and count how many tap-out shirts you've seen.
00:25:37I think it will replace football as the most popular sport in America.
00:25:40It's becoming more integrated into our society.
00:25:43The same way that people turn on Sunday football at the church,
00:25:46I believe it's coming to a point to where people are prepared to watch mixed martial arts or cage fighting at the church.
00:26:06I feel like we'll both have God with us tonight.
00:26:08I believe we'll be kept safe.
00:26:11My brother here is a preacher.
00:26:12I know Nashawn is a preacher.
00:26:14I'm going to come in and give it my best and hopefully God won't be in there with him too good tonight.
00:26:18I'm hoping.
00:26:20I'm here to support him.
00:26:21I'm here to be with him in his fight.
00:26:23Fighting, I'm neutral on it.
00:26:26That's the thing I'm unsure of because the Bible, you know, it just, it don't say it's bad.
00:26:31But don't, you know, I'm always back and forth on it.
00:26:34But I'm here to support my brother.
00:26:36Lord Jesus, just keep us all safe tonight, God.
00:26:38Let's step in there with the right intentions and let us just commit all the things we do unto you, Lord.
00:26:43Let your hands be in this place tonight, Lord, that we may all be protected and that nobody leaves this cage harmed.
00:26:49In Jesus' name I pray, amen.
00:26:52Amen.
00:26:53You got to think, Samson was a mighty man of war.
00:26:57If God's called you to do something, you walk in it.
00:26:59But if God's not called you to do something, you stay away.
00:27:02Friend of Sean Nix, I can tell by the way he's at, he's a very godly dude.
00:27:07And if this is what God's called him to do, then let God be with him.
00:27:12Father, we come to you right now.
00:27:14We ask you to be with us right now, Lord God, as Nashawn goes into battle.
00:27:17Can I say God is going to give me the victory over this individual?
00:27:20I wouldn't dare say that.
00:27:21I think that's poor theology, personal belief in God.
00:27:24My prayer is, Lord, let me perform to the best of my abilities.
00:27:28Lord, give me strength.
00:27:31Let's go.
00:27:32Let's go.
00:27:33Let's go.
00:27:34Let's go.
00:27:35Let's go.
00:27:36Let's go.
00:27:37Der Schoen! Der Schoen!
00:27:45Der Schoen!
00:27:53Let's go, let's go!
00:27:55Der Schoen!
00:28:05Come on!
00:28:07Come on!
00:28:11Let's go!
00:28:13Let's go!

00:28:49God is in every aspect of my life, and in that cage, He's with me as well.
00:29:05It's not about just violence.
00:29:08We are human beings, and at the end of the day, I'm commissioned to love you.
00:29:12You know, as I grow in this sport, my ultimate goal is that I can use this platform as a vehicle to also win souls to Christ.
00:29:31Come on, man. Come on in here.
00:29:34Did you win last night?
00:29:35Did I win?
00:29:36Yes.
00:29:37Sister Brown, you know good and well I won.
00:29:39That's all I want to hear.
00:29:40Give me my kiss now.
00:29:40Lord, have your way.
00:29:46In Jesus' name, amen.
00:29:50Hallelujah.
00:29:50You all may be seated in the presence of God.
00:29:53My congregation are actually, they're fight fans, and their biggest concern is, did you win?
00:30:01Did you win?
00:30:03And some of them aren't as saved as we would like them to be, and they probably want to know if I knock that joker out.
00:30:09What I love about cage fighting is, it's not a ring where somebody can get knocked through the ring.
00:30:14It's not a track and field where people can walk off the track.
00:30:16Baby, when the cage door closes, you ain't nowhere to run, ain't nowhere to hide.
00:30:21You better put your set up.
00:30:22Listen, I learned a long time ago, I ain't waiting for you to throw the first blow.
00:30:26God has given me some power that at the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, every tongue shall confess.
00:30:34Listen, I'm at a point in my faith that when I see the devil, I don't run from him, I run to him.
00:30:39Because if you really want the enemy off your trail, you got to learn to put your foot on his neck.
00:30:45Somebody shout Jesus.
00:31:01I got up at 4 o'clock this morning to drive to the State Assembly because I would really love to see mixed martial arts legalized in New York State.
00:31:09As a pastor, I think we have a mandate for our voices to be heard in politics.
00:31:18So I guess if you have power to do something, if you're able to speak to someone, do it.
00:31:23Why not?
00:31:25As far as the legalization goes, Senate's passed it.
00:31:29We're just waiting for the Assembly to pass it.
00:31:31And as soon as they do, we would love to have a mixed martial arts event at the church.
00:31:35I think sometimes people think it's all these barbarians, but I mean, we're just guys that are using it to try and help reach kids, get kids off the street.
00:31:41I'm with you, brother.
00:31:42Yeah?
00:31:43Yeah.
00:31:43You got a group of guys that say there's enough votes to clear it.
00:31:47And then you got another group of guys who don't want it cleared, you know, in the Assembly.
00:31:51I'm Bob Riley, the Assemblyman.
00:31:53Nice to meet you.
00:31:53Come on in.
00:31:54I had no intention of becoming a spokesperson in opposition to MMA.
00:32:03But do I think the MMA people are completely off base?
00:32:07Absolutely.
00:32:08People do not want MMA legalized.
00:32:11Right now there's a bill in the legislature to legalize ultimate fighting.
00:32:17So how many think that MMA or ultimate fighting should be legal in New York?
00:32:24All right.
00:32:25And how many think it should be illegal?
00:32:30Okay.
00:32:30Most of you people are in favor of it.
00:32:34A couple are opposed.
00:32:36I'm opposed to it because I think that we have enough violence in our society.
00:32:43I don't have a schedule in front of me right now.
00:32:45I just want to get it out.
00:32:45But I'm up in Albany since he has the letter.
00:32:48He didn't have the letter before.
00:32:50That's...
00:32:51But I'm going to pin him down.
00:32:52I'm personally opposed to this.
00:32:54Cage fighting.
00:32:55I don't care if 48 other states allow it.
00:32:58It's just not right.
00:32:59It's the wrong thing to do.
00:33:01Listen, this is about cage fighting.
00:33:02Yeah, I know about that.
00:33:03I'm sure you're opposed to this.
00:33:05Everybody's a brother or sister and people shouldn't be killing one another.
00:33:08We were telling you you have to be against cage fighting.
00:33:10Oh, I'm very much for it.
00:33:12Oh, you can't be now.
00:33:13Listen.
00:33:13I just couldn't believe that there would be an intelligent state senator or assemblyman
00:33:19who would vote for it.
00:33:20This would be a horrible thing to do.
00:33:22It says that violence is the way.
00:33:25Hopefully it'll go down.
00:33:26Okay, let's go over the rules.
00:33:33No biting, eye gouging, knuckle gouging, clawing, pinching, twisting of the flesh.
00:33:38No throat strikes of any kind.
00:33:41No pulling hair.
00:33:43No knees to the head or neck on a grounded opponent.
00:33:46No spiking your opponent.
00:33:48So if you pick this guy up and don't drop him directly on his head, you have to have an arch.
00:33:54Everybody understand that?
00:33:55It's gotten kind of hard to find opponents, especially in my weight class, with me having the amount of fights that I have.
00:34:07Tonight I'm going to be fighting Mike Pagano.
00:34:09I know Mike.
00:34:11He's a friend of mine.
00:34:12I consider him a friend.
00:34:13I know he's tough.
00:34:14His record is 6-0 currently.
00:34:17But no matter what happens tonight, I know it's going to be a learning experience for when I find my next opponent.
00:34:35Elbows, elbows.
00:34:37Up, up, up, up, up, up, up.
00:34:38All right.
00:34:43Up, up, up, up, up, up, up.
00:35:13Up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up.
00:35:30Good to have Preston in One Piece with us today.
00:35:33All right.
00:35:34And amen.
00:35:36Amen.
00:35:37He is the pastor of Disaster and also our associate here at Freedom.
00:35:41und es gibt einen guten Report.
00:35:44Alive ist ein guter Ding. Amen.
00:35:46Und wir begrüßen Preston.
00:35:47Er hat einen Announcements.
00:35:49Give uns ein Report.
00:35:50So, ich hatte ein Fight last night
00:35:52und es war nicht genau wie ich würde es gehen.
00:35:57As mein right eye will be a testimony, too.
00:36:00Aber in life,
00:36:12Aber wenn du all du machst,
00:36:13ist es die easye Worte und du kannst die schweren Worte,
00:36:16dann wirst du niemals aufhören in deinem Leben kommen.
00:36:20Coming off a loss,
00:36:39So, yeah, everybody go, ooh.
00:36:42You guys like to see me fight another pastor?
00:36:45So, um, we'll see what happens.
00:36:47We'll see if we can put this thing together.
00:36:49It's gonna be exciting. It's gonna be a good one.
00:36:51Watch a couple pastors beat each other up.
00:36:55My promoter said if you're interested,
00:36:57he'd be willing to pay your way to fly you up here.
00:37:03I'm taking the fight with Nashawn because he's 2-0.
00:37:06Um, also because it's gonna be fun to fight another pastor.
00:37:11You know, sometimes people get weird
00:37:12about punching a pastor in the face,
00:37:14and I know it's not gonna be weird for him,
00:37:15and it's not gonna be weird for me.
00:37:17So we'll just be a couple of God-fearing men
00:37:20punching each other in the face.
00:37:23All right, let's go.
00:37:30Now your stance up again.
00:37:33My name is Scott Sullivan.
00:37:35I am a martial arts expert.
00:37:36I run a martial arts studio here in Houston
00:37:38called Bam Bam Martial Arts.
00:37:40I also produce mixed martial arts training videos.
00:37:48I got into martial arts when I was a little kid,
00:37:50started taking lessons,
00:37:52and then just, uh, fell in love with martial arts
00:37:54and been doing it my whole life.
00:37:55I did pretty well in my sport.
00:37:57When I was in my 20s,
00:37:58I reached the level of a United States kickboxing champion
00:38:01and shoot-boxing champion.
00:38:08I can understand the appeal of MMA.
00:38:11I think as human beings, especially as men,
00:38:14it gives a level of excitement
00:38:16that probably no other sport has.
00:38:18Let's just be honest,
00:38:19it is very exciting to watch.
00:38:20As I progressed in my Christian life,
00:38:39I started to see a conflict there.
00:38:41I was just, uh, feeling bad about going to work.
00:38:47It just didn't jive with my prayer life,
00:38:49and I couldn't put my finger on it.
00:38:51It's just something,
00:38:52there was this discordant tone in my life.
00:38:57Any serious Christian at all is going to say
00:38:59that one of the primary teachings of Christianity
00:39:01is that you love your neighbor as yourself.
00:39:03Can you love your neighbor as yourself,
00:39:06and then at the same time,
00:39:07knee him in the face as hard as you can?
00:39:18Some people would say that mixed martial arts
00:39:19is still a violent act,
00:39:21but I think that depends on your definition of violence.
00:39:25I don't think it's violent at all,
00:39:26and I hate the use of that word
00:39:27the way most people use it.
00:39:29The word violent,
00:39:30if you go back and you research the word,
00:39:31actually means to violate somebody's rights.
00:39:33It's not violent at all.
00:39:35Go down the street and somebody gets raped or robbed,
00:39:36that's violence.
00:39:37Murder, that's violence.
00:39:39This is two participants
00:39:40entering into a ring or a cage
00:39:42saying, we're going to test each other today,
00:39:44and the best man's going to win.
00:39:47That is not violence.
00:39:54The immediate object of this sport
00:39:56is intending to damage someone.
00:39:59It's the goal of the game.
00:40:01You know, for me,
00:40:05I don't go into the ring
00:40:06looking to hurt anyone,
00:40:08looking to embarrass anyone,
00:40:09or fighting for me
00:40:10is really more of an art form.
00:40:16The other guy knows it's a sport,
00:40:17and I know it's a sport,
00:40:18and we get in there
00:40:19to just see who's the better guy at the sport.
00:40:22I don't think that's not loving your neighbor.
00:40:23There's a lot of love between the two fighters.
00:40:31I mean, come on.
00:40:33You can say you love the person,
00:40:35but you're not demonstrating that
00:40:37in any way, shape, or form
00:40:38as you're beating that person up,
00:40:40almost beating that person to death.
00:40:41This type of activity,
00:40:49because of the nature of it,
00:40:51it fosters a brutal spirit,
00:40:53a brutal mindset,
00:40:56even, not just as a competitor,
00:40:58even as a spectator.
00:40:58I think for a Christian to fight,
00:41:04there has to be a good reason,
00:41:05a morally sufficient reason,
00:41:07and I don't see the reasons
00:41:09that a lot of the guys
00:41:11are fighting for in mixed martial arts
00:41:12doing it for that reason.
00:41:28I think Christianity makes demands on us.
00:41:38You know, to be serious about your faith,
00:41:40it should show,
00:41:41and the way you live,
00:41:42and it did with me.
00:41:44Here I am,
00:41:45I'll go to my death thinking,
00:41:47love your neighbor as yourself,
00:41:49and at the other time,
00:41:50I promote punching someone in the face
00:41:52for fame, money,
00:41:54and a little bit of glory.
00:41:55I may have to do something else.
00:41:59I'm conflicted.
00:42:00I'm conflicted, absolutely.
00:42:09There you go.
00:42:10Mommy's covered.
00:42:16I think I kind of heard about it as like,
00:42:19oh, we're all involved in this tournament,
00:42:22and I said to Paul,
00:42:24are you actually like grappling in this tournament?
00:42:28And he said, oh, yeah, I am.
00:42:29So that's how I found out.
00:42:33I just kind of want to see where I am.
00:42:35After years of not competing
00:42:36and just coaching and training
00:42:38and teaching in different groups,
00:42:39I kind of want to see where I stand.
00:42:42If I do well today,
00:42:44I think I would love to try another MMA fight.
00:42:47You know, we'll see what happens
00:42:48if it opens up in New York,
00:42:49and we could even have one at the church,
00:42:52which would be nice.
00:42:53Preparing for battle.
00:42:57I prepare myself spiritually for competition.
00:43:00Just, you know, read my Bible.
00:43:02Last night I read Psalm 86,
00:43:04which is about David facing his enemies.
00:43:07And, well, these aren't enemies.
00:43:08They're just other guys in sports.
00:43:10Either way,
00:43:12I want people here to see
00:43:13that you can love Jesus
00:43:14and, you know, be a warrior
00:43:16and have a warrior's heart
00:43:16at the same time.
00:43:18If Paul were to fight competitively again,
00:43:22I would enjoy seeing him do it,
00:43:26but also understand
00:43:28that he has a family,
00:43:29has responsibilities.
00:43:30He has a ministry,
00:43:32and he knows that his first obligation
00:43:34is his ministry for the Lord God.
00:43:37And so I know that
00:43:39if he were to choose that,
00:43:41that he would choose it
00:43:42for God's glory,
00:43:43not for his own,
00:43:45and would do it
00:43:46in order to reach people
00:43:47with the gospel.
00:44:07If he came and he told me
00:44:11that he wanted to actually pursue MMA,
00:44:14because of all of his injuries
00:44:15in the past,
00:44:16I think I would just ask
00:44:18a lot of questions.
00:44:19I don't know.
00:44:20I don't know if it's realistic
00:44:22to think that he could
00:44:24actually do MMA.
00:44:36What's up?
00:44:36I would have liked to have won,
00:44:44but it doesn't always happen.
00:44:47Rolling around here today
00:44:48definitely lights a fire
00:44:49for wanting to fight MMA.
00:44:50If they legalize it in New York,
00:44:52I'd like to take one of the
00:44:53first fights in New York.
00:44:54That'd be great.
00:44:55Definitely puts a little fire
00:44:56into me,
00:44:56wants me to be able
00:44:58to throw some hands,
00:44:59because there's so many positions
00:45:00I get to where I could be
00:45:01whaling down some shots
00:45:02in a normal fight,
00:45:05you know,
00:45:05so I kind of miss that.
00:45:06Daddy,
00:45:19shut up, nag.
00:45:23I bought my son
00:45:24his first gun,
00:45:25it's 22.
00:45:25He's actually probably
00:45:27better than I am
00:45:28after playing all the
00:45:29video games at me.
00:45:30The last time I took him,
00:45:31I bought a buddy's gun
00:45:32and he was just like
00:45:32all over.
00:45:34I mean,
00:45:35he was good,
00:45:35so it's going to be
00:45:36a lot of fun.
00:45:37All right.
00:45:38Hey,
00:45:38why don't you,
00:45:39I'm going to smack you.
00:45:42Right here.
00:45:43Don't touch, Colin.
00:45:50That was a good one.
00:45:58I knew it was bleeding
00:45:59right away.
00:46:01How bad does it bleed?
00:46:02It's not bad,
00:46:04is it?
00:46:05What happened?
00:46:08Just a piece of the metal
00:46:11bounced off and hit me
00:46:12in the throat.
00:46:13Son,
00:46:13do not put your finger
00:46:14in the trigger.
00:46:15I think mainstream
00:46:19or Western Christianity
00:46:20has feminized men.
00:46:21We've taken away
00:46:22their God-given attributes
00:46:24of aggressiveness,
00:46:25of competitiveness.
00:46:26We expect men
00:46:27to be prim and proper
00:46:28and you've got to be
00:46:28polite all the time
00:46:29and you never respond
00:46:31with aggression
00:46:32and with force,
00:46:33almost like they act
00:46:34like females.
00:46:34Now,
00:46:35is the gun on fire
00:46:35or on safety?
00:46:37Stop.
00:46:38Here.
00:46:39There you go.
00:46:40Good.
00:46:41Now aim.
00:46:42Put your finger
00:46:42in the trigger well.
00:46:43Squeeze.
00:46:44Breathe.
00:46:45Breathe.
00:46:51Stop.
00:46:52Did you get hit
00:46:53in the mouth?
00:46:57I think that the
00:47:01vast majority
00:47:02of problems
00:47:02we're having
00:47:02in our culture today
00:47:03are because we don't
00:47:04have a warrior ethos.
00:47:05We have a bunch of cowards.
00:47:06Drop the magazine.
00:47:08Because you stopped
00:47:09because you got hit
00:47:10in the mouth
00:47:10and you started
00:47:11crying about it.
00:47:13Aiden,
00:47:13you ready?
00:47:13I think that
00:47:15a warrior ethos,
00:47:16if properly developed,
00:47:18will do nothing
00:47:18but help our society.
00:47:20Do put your finger
00:47:21in there
00:47:22until you're ready
00:47:22to shoot.
00:47:24Now,
00:47:24aim.
00:47:28Good.
00:47:29No, stop.
00:47:37Keep your finger
00:47:38out of the trigger
00:47:40well, son.
00:47:44You okay?
00:47:47I don't have a problem
00:47:51with aggression
00:47:51at all.
00:47:56If we would raise
00:47:57our boys to be men
00:47:58of honor and integrity
00:48:00and strength
00:48:01who will stand up
00:48:02to evil
00:48:03and wickedness
00:48:04and unrighteousness,
00:48:05these kind of problems
00:48:06go away.
00:48:06anyone who says
00:48:12that we need
00:48:12a warrior
00:48:13kind of mentality
00:48:14and way
00:48:15really doesn't understand
00:48:16what the Lord's all about.
00:48:18It's a crazy notion.
00:48:19I mean,
00:48:19war hurts.
00:48:21War demeans.
00:48:23Violence does that.
00:48:25It makes us less
00:48:26than we should be.
00:48:28And it's a sign
00:48:29of a sickness
00:48:30in society
00:48:31if there are people
00:48:32who say
00:48:32that this is a good thing.
00:48:33Some people
00:48:37would look at us
00:48:38and, oh,
00:48:39you know,
00:48:39isn't Jesus a pacifist?
00:48:40Well, he told Peter,
00:48:41sell your coat
00:48:42and buy a sword.
00:48:43You're going to need
00:48:43your sword more.
00:48:46Most Christians
00:48:47have this attitude
00:48:49that we're floating
00:48:50down a canoe
00:48:52on a gentle river
00:48:53drinking a Pepsi
00:48:54and that's not it.
00:48:57God warns,
00:48:58be sober,
00:48:58be vigilant
00:48:59for your adversary,
00:49:00the devil,
00:49:01walks about
00:49:01as a roaring lion
00:49:02seeking whom
00:49:03he may devour.
00:49:03so Satan
00:49:05sees you
00:49:06as a Big Mac,
00:49:08you know?
00:49:09And he wants us
00:49:10to be aware
00:49:11that this is
00:49:11a battlefield.
00:49:13Jesus said,
00:49:14upon this rock
00:49:15I will build
00:49:16my church.
00:49:17Now listen
00:49:17to the next words.
00:49:19And the gates
00:49:20of hell
00:49:21will not prevail
00:49:22against it.
00:49:24Which means
00:49:25we need to charge
00:49:27them,
00:49:29not wait for them
00:49:30to come to us.
00:49:31it's kind of interesting.
00:49:40Hi guys,
00:49:40we having fun?
00:49:42Yeah.
00:49:43Okay,
00:49:43yep,
00:49:44we're going to
00:49:44have a little
00:49:44Bible story.
00:49:46And we're all
00:49:46going to be super
00:49:47quiet when we do
00:49:47our Bible story,
00:49:48otherwise we're doing
00:49:49way too many push-ups.
00:49:52My dad was definitely
00:49:53my mentor
00:49:54and the guy
00:49:55that got me started
00:49:56in fighting
00:49:56and wrestling
00:49:57and stuff growing up.
00:49:58And now it's my son
00:49:59doing that with me.
00:50:00You know,
00:50:00we'll be rolling around
00:50:01wrestling and I'll start
00:50:02getting him to go
00:50:02tap, tap, tap.
00:50:03And as soon as I let off
00:50:04him, he'll throw another
00:50:05shot.
00:50:05He loves it.
00:50:06I mean,
00:50:10every day we roll
00:50:11for a half hour.
00:50:12I started with my dad
00:50:12at three
00:50:13and I started Xander
00:50:14at three.
00:50:16Don't give up, buddy.
00:50:18Don't turn your back.
00:50:19Do not turn your back
00:50:20on her.
00:50:21Hands up.
00:50:22Come on.
00:50:22Keep your footwork right.
00:50:23Footwork.
00:50:24Jam cross.
00:50:25I'm okay with him
00:50:26fighting,
00:50:26but he's just got
00:50:28the cutest face
00:50:29and I don't want
00:50:30to see anything
00:50:31happen to that
00:50:32cute little face
00:50:33of mine.
00:50:33He was actually
00:50:35wrestling with one
00:50:36of the little boys
00:50:37not too long ago
00:50:37and he tapped him
00:50:39out and the boy
00:50:40started crying
00:50:40and he'd come up
00:50:41and he says,
00:50:42fighting is what
00:50:42fighting is.
00:50:43You just got to
00:50:44deal with it.
00:50:46Take my back.
00:50:47You know,
00:50:48God raises some
00:50:49people up and allows
00:50:51them to have skills
00:50:52to protect others.
00:50:53There's a fruit of
00:50:54the spirit in the
00:50:55scripture called
00:50:55gentleness and
00:50:56gentleness is born
00:50:58out of power.
00:51:00It's not born out
00:51:00of weakness.
00:51:01So when he says
00:51:02be gentle,
00:51:03it's because you
00:51:04have the ability
00:51:05to not be gentle.
00:51:07Listen to me.
00:51:08We love.
00:51:09Look at me.
00:51:11Love.
00:51:12I think it's
00:51:13completely healthy
00:51:14to teach kids
00:51:15martial arts and
00:51:16training if it's
00:51:18balanced with love.
00:51:19Hard work!
00:51:20Dedication!
00:51:21Hard work!
00:51:22Dedication!
00:51:23Hard work!
00:51:24Dedication!
00:51:25Hard work!
00:51:26This week we're
00:51:27having a fight camp
00:51:28upstairs on our
00:51:30ministry center
00:51:30for some students
00:51:32from around
00:51:33Virginia Beach.
00:51:35Good.
00:51:36Good kicks.
00:51:37We're teaching
00:51:38them how to defend
00:51:39themselves,
00:51:39giving them tools
00:51:40to stay safe.
00:51:41Our message to them
00:51:42is going to be
00:51:44how to be courageous
00:51:45throughout life.
00:51:47Perfect.
00:51:47Do you have fun
00:51:51practice tonight?
00:51:52It's your first
00:51:53practice.
00:51:53You did awesome,
00:51:54you little animal.
00:51:55Right?
00:51:56What grade are you in?
00:51:57Sixth.
00:51:57Sixth grade?
00:51:58That's cool.
00:51:59So your dad said you
00:52:00want to be a pastor?
00:52:01Yeah.
00:52:02And you want to be a
00:52:03fighter?
00:52:03Yeah.
00:52:04Hey, it's cool to be
00:52:04both.
00:52:05Are you a pastor?
00:52:06Yes, sir.
00:52:07A pastor and a fighter.
00:52:09Don't mean too many of
00:52:10those, huh?
00:52:10No.
00:52:11I don't think you
00:52:12can tell a kid,
00:52:14don't bully in school,
00:52:16you know,
00:52:16be civil to your
00:52:18classmates and then
00:52:19take them to a fight
00:52:20where you have two men
00:52:23or two women in a cage
00:52:24kneeing each other in
00:52:26the head or slamming
00:52:27their fist into someone
00:52:28lying on the ground.
00:52:30It's related to the
00:52:31bullying that we're
00:52:32trying to get out of
00:52:34schools.
00:52:34It's related to my
00:52:35mind to domestic
00:52:36violence.
00:52:37It befuddles me why
00:52:39somebody, especially a
00:52:40minister, would say,
00:52:41we have to take this to
00:52:43the next level of
00:52:45violence.
00:52:46It doesn't make sense.
00:52:48I'm here.
00:52:49I'm just turning.
00:52:51I was kind of
00:52:52thinking to myself,
00:52:53like, that's pretty
00:52:54cool.
00:52:55My, like, pastor does,
00:52:57like, cage fighting,
00:52:58and I wanted to get
00:52:59into that because,
00:53:00like, I was like,
00:53:01oh, sweet, now I can
00:53:01go, like, beat
00:53:03everybody up.
00:53:04I like the takedowns.
00:53:06I thought those were
00:53:07really cool, and, um,
00:53:09I really liked the
00:53:10combos.
00:53:10The combo punches we
00:53:12were doing.
00:53:12I really liked those.
00:53:14Not to be, like, a punk,
00:53:15but I like fighting.
00:53:16Fighting's fun.
00:53:17I watch the UFC and
00:53:19everything.
00:53:20I don't know.
00:53:21I like hitting things.
00:53:25This, they do the
00:53:26fighting, but it's for
00:53:27God and Jesus.
00:53:29The past couple times,
00:53:30I learned to, like,
00:53:31love your neighbor,
00:53:32love each other.
00:53:34So, I don't know.
00:53:35This fight is coming up
00:53:40this weekend.
00:53:42He's been training for
00:53:43this, actually, for a
00:53:44couple of years.
00:53:45He had a fight, and, uh,
00:53:48took a pretty good
00:53:48beating, and, uh, it
00:53:51won't happen again.
00:53:51Let me go get the pants
00:53:54again.
00:53:54Work on his knees.
00:54:00I'm feeling good,
00:54:01confident.
00:54:02He's a year younger than
00:54:04me, and he weighs 90
00:54:05pounds.
00:54:05When I'm going to weigh 110
00:54:06in the fight, and I'm 12
00:54:08years old, so I'm going to
00:54:09go in there and rip this
00:54:10kid's head off.
00:54:11Now, listen.
00:54:13God said, don't be
00:54:14afraid, don't be
00:54:16discouraged, because I'm
00:54:17your God, and I'll be
00:54:18with you wherever you go.
00:54:19Right?
00:54:34Come on, Lucas!
00:54:40Hands up, Lucas.
00:54:41Press in.
00:54:41Press in, Lucas.
00:54:43Lucas, get your hands up.
00:54:45Get your hips on his hips.
00:54:46Hip in them.
00:54:48Lucas, hands up.
00:54:49Hands up.
00:54:49Come on, baby.
00:55:01Get your hands up, Lucas.
00:55:02Lucas, hands up, baby.
00:55:06Go your knees, Lucas.
00:55:08Get your hands up, Lucas.
00:55:09Work his hands up, baby.
00:55:11Work his hands up, baby.
00:55:12Good job.
00:55:15You're going to finish this
00:55:15fight, and you're going to
00:55:16finish well, okay?
00:55:17I can't take you hitting.
00:55:18You're going to win this fight.
00:55:20I'm proud of you, buddy.
00:55:21You're doing good.
00:55:21I'm going to go straight down
00:55:22the stairs.
00:55:24Find your range.
00:55:26Find your range.
00:55:27You want to find your range,
00:55:28Lucas?
00:55:35You've got to skip your ground.
00:55:36Get back.
00:55:36Lucas, get back.
00:55:37Come on.
00:55:38Now, Lucas.
00:55:39Lucas, now.
00:55:40Come on, Lucas.
00:55:40Stay at it.
00:55:41Hands up.
00:55:41Let's go.
00:55:41Hands up.
00:55:42Clinch.
00:55:43Clinch.
00:55:43Hey, clinch.
00:55:44Knees.
00:55:45Throw up some knees.
00:55:45Come on.
00:55:46Hands up.
00:55:53Hands up.
00:55:55Hands up.
00:55:57Lucas, watch it.
00:56:00All right.
00:56:01Good job.
00:56:03Good job.
00:56:04Good job.
00:56:05Good job.
00:56:05Hey, good job.
00:56:06That was good.
00:56:08Hey, hey.
00:56:09Look at me.
00:56:09Look at me.
00:56:10You're fine.
00:56:11You're fine.
00:56:11Don't cry.
00:56:12Don't say you're fine.
00:56:12Put it in here.
00:56:13Hey, hey, hey, hey.
00:56:16Hey.
00:56:17Hold on, buddy.
00:56:21Listen, there's nothing to be ashamed of.
00:56:22It was good.
00:56:23You stayed in there the whole time.
00:56:25You never quit.
00:56:25You never gave up.
00:56:27That was a good experience.
00:56:30Listen to me.
00:56:31Some of my best experiences is getting beat up a little bit.
00:56:34All right?
00:56:35Let me tell you this.
00:56:37This is a good experience.
00:56:38And here's the thrust for today.
00:56:57God gave each one of us our own gifts.
00:57:01I mean, how many of you guys would like to sit in a classroom full of 20 kids under the age of seven?
00:57:05Right?
00:57:06But how many ladies think that you could do that?
00:57:08You might not be the best teacher, but you're okay with that.
00:57:11You can manage it.
00:57:13All right?
00:57:13Once again, it's about whatever God has given you, use it.
00:57:17Maybe it's medicine.
00:57:18Fine.
00:57:19Maybe it's gun range.
00:57:20Fine.
00:57:21Use your gun range to bring people into the kingdom.
00:57:29It's good to meet you guys.
00:57:31Hey, no problem.
00:57:32Hopefully we'll see you again next week.
00:57:33Oh, that's nice.
00:57:36Yeah.
00:57:36It's real nice.
00:57:37Yeah.
00:57:42I love that.
00:57:43Yeah.
00:57:44The reason why I got it was because he said that the way they made that one was so that you could start as a boy and you could still use it as an adult.
00:57:52Yeah, absolutely.
00:57:52So, I like it.
00:57:54Yeah.
00:57:55So, this is Crusader's Cross.
00:58:00It's a symbol of freedom.
00:58:01It's a symbol of liberating the oppressed.
00:58:03And somehow or another, the history has been skewed.
00:58:06And even though the Crusades have a huge, horrible reputation, it's not historically accurate.
00:58:12Ultimately, the Crusaders stand for liberating the oppressed, and that's what we're about.
00:58:16We have an obligation as Christians to defend.
00:58:21Sometimes that requires killing.
00:58:24The call of the gospel is turn the other cheek in light of religious persecution.
00:58:29I've had people bring up the turn the other cheek, and I've had people bring up the turn the other cheek in the context of watching somebody get raped.
00:58:35I'm like, that's crap.
00:58:37What if I'm not trying to rape your wife?
00:58:39What if I'm simply up in your face disrespecting you?
00:58:42It doesn't matter.
00:58:42You're going down.
00:58:43It doesn't say just sit there and take somebody's tongue lashing just because.
00:58:47It never says that in the entire Bible.
00:58:49It never says we should be everybody else's whipping post.
00:58:52If you come nose to nose with me, I'm going to put you in your place.
00:58:56Don't disrespect me.
00:59:05One of my competitors here in town got online and started talking crap about my wife.
00:59:29Totally uncalled for.
00:59:30I said, hey, since you say you're a 4-0 amateur fighter, let's meet in a cage and settle this in a cage.
00:59:36And he publicly agreed, said he would fight me in November.
00:59:45I put together a routine to be pretty hard.
00:59:47I've been training like he's going to take the fight and trying to get myself back into actual competitive state.
00:59:53And I don't think he'll do it, but I'm really hoping he will.
00:59:59Why?
00:59:59Because he's a trash talker.
01:00:01Guys who really fight don't talk trash.
01:00:07I was wondering if.
01:00:09I'm working out harder than I have in years trying to get back in shape for this fight.
01:00:33And I'm almost 40 years old and it's taking its toll.
01:00:36It's pretty intense.
01:00:38Once you get out of shape, to get back in shape is really a big challenge.
01:00:42And I've not trained to fight in probably, I think, six years now.
01:00:46So I'm not going to get in the ring and be out of shape and fail because I wasn't prepared.
01:00:52This is what we've been preparing for for the last nine weeks.
01:01:14The training, my mental preparation, spiritual preparation.
01:01:18This is what I've been waiting for.
01:01:20Get into it.
01:01:21Think about the fight.
01:01:22Don't worry about anything else that's going on.
01:01:23Four.
01:01:24Come on, come on, come on, come on.
01:01:25Come on.
01:01:25You'll be all right.
01:01:28Two.
01:01:29Come on, come on.
01:01:29There's so many variables that can go wrong, but I'm here to win.
01:01:45I did not come from Jacksonville, Florida to go through the motions.
01:01:48I'm very confident that I can win this fight.
01:02:00I think I'm more than ready to go to battle with Nishan.
01:02:05You know, as an all-around fighter, I feel like I'm a better fighter.
01:02:08I feel like I have more tools than he has.
01:02:11You know, I guarantee that he's going to have to fight on my level.
01:02:14So we're going to go in.
01:02:16I'm going to push the pace and see if he can keep up.
01:02:18And if he can't, he's going to get caught.
01:02:25Experience, it plays a huge role.
01:02:28His experience may give him hope because people can look at me and say,
01:02:34well, this guy's never been pushed or tested.
01:02:36But my objective in fighting Preston is to win this fight by any means necessary.
01:02:42And if it takes for me to hurt him to win this fight, then that's what I'm going to do.
01:02:48Is everybody ready for Superbich Marshall?
01:03:05Let's...
01:03:06Ladies and gentlemen, this is...
01:03:10Das ist Sportacum!

01:05:08wo man weiß, dass das meine Möglichkeit ist,
01:05:12um zu capitalieren.
01:05:15In einer Weise, es ist die gleiche mentality
01:05:18wie in der Street-Fight.
01:05:20Die einzige Unterschiede ist,
01:05:21dass ich trainierende Antworten habe.
01:05:30Ich habe den Arm gesperrt,

01:05:37Ich hatte den Arm gesperrt,

01:05:42Und dann habe ich versucht,
01:05:43von einem anderen Angeln,
01:05:44und ich dachte, dass er sollte.
01:05:45Aber es war so, als ob es war.

01:06:57Das war nicht so, was ich konnte. Er hat mich kaputt gemacht.
01:07:00Ich wollte ihn kaputt, mein Arm. Das ist das, was ich wollte.
01:07:03Ich hoffe, mein Arm ist kaputt.
01:07:09Ich konnte nicht sogar kämpfen! Ich konnte nicht kämpfen!
01:07:27Guten Tag, guten Tag!
01:07:29Guten Tag, guten Tag, guten Tag!
01:07:31Wir hatten ein Krieg yesterday.
01:07:33Es war nicht so, dass ich mich nicht so lief, Nishan.
01:07:35Ich wirklich zum Lernen wollte, aber...
01:07:37At least you were honest.
01:08:03Vater, in der Name of Jesus,
01:08:06wir für Pastor Nishan.
01:08:08Wir asken, Gott,
01:08:10dass du unsere Pastor Freund beherrst.
01:08:21Wir haben gute News.
01:08:23Es sieht aus wie die Legalisierung der Mixed Martial Arts
01:08:25wird schneller als wir denken.
01:08:27Riley retired.
01:08:29So now, mit einem unserer Hauptmannschaften
01:08:31retiring,
01:09:23Nicht yet, no.
01:09:24Da ist, wie 30 left und sie sind.
01:09:26Oh, wirklich?
01:09:27Ja.
01:09:28Du kommst in den Fighten?
01:09:29Ich bin nicht sicher, ja.
01:09:30Da sind nur, wie 20 oder so, Tickets left.
01:09:32Das Saturday night ist unser Kage Flight, das wir haben,
01:09:35unsere erste MMA Flight hier in Rochester.
01:09:37So, ja, wir...
01:09:39Um...
01:09:40Es ist einfach zu machen, so wir müssen in prayer über das.
01:09:42Joining mich in der Studio ist Pastor Paul Burris.
01:09:45Pastor Paul ist ein MMA-Fighter,
01:09:47coming out of retirement.
01:09:48Und die Fighten ist tomorrow night
01:09:50in Main Street Armory.
01:09:51So, regardless of what happens in the fight,
01:09:53I'll be preaching on Sunday morning, so...
01:09:55So cool!
01:09:56You're gonna fight and then preach the very next...
01:09:58Yes, but just in case I have a concussion or something,
01:10:00I do have my Executive Pastor on deck,
01:10:02uh, with my notes and stuff ready to preach,
01:10:04just in case, so...
01:10:05I'm just concerned that, you know,
01:10:07he's gonna not be able to preach on Sunday.
01:10:10And I would not like to see him get knocked out.
01:10:14Because I don't like to see people's eyes roll in the back of their head.
01:10:17But hopefully that's not gonna happen.
01:10:20Will I always be in martial arts? Absolutely. I'm a martial artist at heart.
01:10:35However, um, my dominant interest nowadays is the academic side of things.
01:10:40Currently I'm pursuing a PhD in philosophy, the philosophy of religion.
01:10:45And that's what I want to devote my whole life to.
01:10:51I have a little bit of experience, obviously, in video production,
01:10:54so nowadays I spend the majority of my time producing educational videos
01:10:59in the area of philosophy, logic, and Christian apologetics, things of that nature.
01:11:04The proposition that one intends to prove here is that God exists.
01:11:09Do I miss being in the MMA world? Yeah.
01:11:11I miss the friends and some of the excitement, for sure.
01:11:15I still like all that stuff.
01:11:17It's just the fact that I have come to the realization that I cannot both be a Christian
01:11:24and train people to fight in mixed martial arts competition.
01:11:27I think mixed martial arts and Christian doctrine are incompatible.
01:11:57My name is Fr. John DeFell.
01:12:06And this particular piece of legislation, if passed,
01:12:09will not in any way help us walk the earth as brothers and sisters.
01:12:12Because it's all about violence.
01:12:14It's all about hatred.
01:12:16Its purpose is to hurt.
01:12:18The tradition of which I'm a part is that we love one another.
01:12:22That's what we're supposed to do.
01:12:25And this ain't love.
01:12:27It is wrong.
01:12:29It's immoral.
01:12:30And it should not be done.
01:12:32Thank you.
01:12:36Every New Yorker can do anything in MMA right now except attend a professional.
01:12:41They can attend amateur events all they want.
01:12:43They can do everything except attend professional MMA events in New York.
01:12:47So tell me how that makes sense.
01:12:50I understand that there are some amateur cage fights here and even in New York.
01:12:56I would hope that members of the legislature would introduce a bill that would make those illegal.
01:13:02Put in a rule to ban it.
01:13:05Even on an amateur basis.
01:13:07That's a whole separate issue.
01:13:09Well, that's...
01:13:10I mean, whether it's amateur or pro, it's wrong.
01:13:13Next bout at 145 pounds.
01:13:16From Trinity Training, Paul Burris.
01:13:18I kind of thought this might be coming anyway where he might want to go out there and do it like one more time.
01:13:23I just remember Paul saying, I have this opportunity to take this fight and it's going to be in Rochester.
01:13:33And I was like, do you realize that you just took this fight on the night before Easter?
01:13:39So here we go.
01:13:40Dear Jesus, we love you so much.
01:13:42Lord Jesus, we pray that you get the glory tonight.
01:13:44Lord, that no matter what happens, that we walk out pointing people to you.
01:13:47And Lord, protect us.
01:13:48Lord, let there be no injuries.
01:13:49Lord, we pray that you get the glory tonight.
01:13:50Lord, that no matter what happens, that we walk out pointing people to you.
01:13:54And Lord, protect us.
01:13:55Lord, let there be no injuries.
01:13:56And we just thank you already for the good night you're going to give us in Jesus' name.
01:13:57Amen.
01:13:58Amen.
01:13:59Amen.
01:14:00Amen.
01:14:01Amen.
01:14:02Amen.
01:14:03Amen.
01:14:04Amen.
01:14:05Amen.
01:14:06Amen.
01:14:07Amen.
01:14:24Amen.
01:14:25Amen.
01:14:26Amen.
01:14:27Amen.
01:14:28Amen.
01:14:29Amen.
01:14:30Amen.
01:14:31Amen.
01:14:32Amen.
01:14:33Amen.
01:14:34Amen.
01:14:35Amen.
01:14:36Amen.
01:14:37Amen.
01:14:38Amen.
01:14:39Amen.
01:14:40Amen.
01:14:41Amen.
01:14:42Amen.
01:14:43Amen.
01:14:44Amen.
01:14:45Amen.
01:14:46Amen.
01:14:47Amen.
01:14:48Amen.
01:14:49Amen.
01:14:50Amen.
01:14:51Amen.
01:14:52Amen.
01:14:53Amen.
01:14:54I asked the Lord to put his covering on me, just Lord, use me to be a witness, use me to be a billboard for you.
01:15:13It's been a tough night so far, the first two fighters have lost, and I heard a guy just got his bell rung pretty bad, taken out in an ambulance, so, you know, I mean, it is what it is,
01:15:22but you probably got some ladies biting their nails out there, I don't know, my wife's probably stressing a little higher after watching that.
01:15:29I'm praying that my head is clear enough for preaching my Easter service in the morning, so, honestly.
01:15:35You got church you're going to for Easter tomorrow?
01:15:52It's our seventh bout of the evening, from right here in Rochester, New York, Paul the Breacher!
01:16:14Sarah!
01:16:30Sarah!
01:16:32Oh
01:17:02He did it, he did it, he did it!
01:17:32All of these wins, all of these losses are temporary.
01:17:50The real win, the real victory, has already been won 2,000 years ago.
01:17:55Jesus never tapped.
01:17:58And if you surrender to him, you can have real power and real strength.
01:18:15So, it's a good day.
01:18:17It's Easter.
01:18:18It's the day we celebrate the resurrection of Christ.
01:18:20It's the day we celebrate the fact that Jesus finished well.
01:18:23Listen, finishing strong doesn't mean we win every battle.
01:18:27Linda's fight last night was tough.
01:18:29She fought a really tough fighter, right?
01:18:31Never gave up.
01:18:31It was awesome.
01:18:32I'm so stinking proud of you.
01:18:34When Jesus was being tortured and beaten and he falls down to his knees, he powered back up.
01:18:42And he took it.
01:18:44And the soldiers beat him senseless.
01:18:47And the blood streamed across his face.
01:18:49And he was bruised.
01:18:50And he was probably barely recognizable.
01:18:53But he stayed there.
01:18:54He took it.
01:18:54And as he hung on that cross, his last words were telling, forgive them because they don't know what they're doing.
01:19:05And he said, Father, forgive them.
01:19:06They don't know what they're doing.
01:19:07To have a couple of pastors go to the cage and battle it out kind of proves that, you know, church isn't just for women and kids.
01:19:32It's for tough guys, too.
01:19:33To me, it's about the gospel.
01:19:44And every chance I get to open my mouth and speak about the power of the gospel, I'm going to take it.
01:19:48It don't matter where it's at.
01:19:49I mean, I've had guys punch me in the face.
01:19:51What are you going to say that's going to hurt my feelings?
01:19:53I double-dot dare every Christian just to do what it takes to step in the cage.
01:20:07Don't step in it.
01:20:08I'm saying just go through the preparation that it takes.
01:20:12And I guarantee they will change their mindset.
01:20:14Oh, hi, how are you?
01:20:24How are you doing?
01:20:25Good to see you.
01:20:25You know, you're the first really badass preacher I've met.
01:20:28Really?
01:20:28Yeah, yeah.
01:20:29I love you guys.
01:20:41I love you.
01:20:42I love you.
01:20:42I love you.
01:20:43I love you.
01:20:47I don't doubt what we do.
01:20:49Love you guys.
01:20:50Peace out.
01:20:50Have an awesome Easter.
01:20:51Because I know this is the gifts and the skills God has given me.
01:20:56There's actually a cool verse in the Bible that says,
01:20:58Be wary when all men speak well of you.
01:21:01If everybody loves you, you're doing something wrong.
01:21:05I don't answer to people.
01:21:06I answer to God.
01:21:07Someday I'm going to stand before him and like Paul in the Bible,
01:21:10I want to hear, well done, good and faithful servant.
01:21:13My prayer is as I walk close to Jesus and just do the right thing
01:21:17and let him take care of the rest.
01:21:21God bless you.
01:21:51God bless you.
01:22:21God bless you.
01:22:23God bless you.
01:22:24God bless you.
01:22:25God bless you.
01:22:26God bless you.
01:22:27God bless you.
01:22:28God bless you.
01:22:29God bless you.
01:22:30God bless you.
01:22:31God bless you.
01:22:32God bless you.
01:22:33God bless you.
01:22:34God bless you.
01:22:35God bless you.
01:22:36God bless you.
01:22:37God bless you.
