00:04:00I'm not still sleeping here.
00:04:03I'd been with him the previous week.
00:04:06We went to Belgium for the fixture meeting
00:04:08where he absolutely bossed the meeting.
00:04:10We had the Serbs and the Croats in the same room
00:04:12and the Scots.
00:04:14We walked out of there giving each other high fives
00:04:16in the lobby because he went that well.
00:04:19And then on Sunday I'd take this call.
00:04:21You spoke to him yesterday?
00:04:23Yeah, I spoke to him yesterday morning.
00:04:26We had a good chat.
00:04:27We were laughing and joking.
00:04:28I watched him on Football Focus yesterday
00:04:30as many millions did.
00:04:33I talked to Dan Walker
00:04:35who presented the programme a little earlier.
00:04:36He said there was nothing to suggest.
00:04:38Any problems, anything untoward at all.
00:04:41No, nothing at all.
00:04:42I just can't believe it.
00:04:45He's my mate and he's gone.
00:04:46It's like...
00:04:48It's just...
00:04:50I don't know what to say.
00:04:57Huge loss.
00:04:58To everyone in football.
00:05:05He was just such a real good personality, you know,
00:05:08and a great laugh.
00:05:11To lose him when we lost him was unthinkable, really.
00:05:15It's something that you never...
00:05:16You never get over.
00:05:17Everyone just had so much sympathy for his family,
00:05:23what they see would have to go through.
00:05:28Yeah, it was just a very, very sad time.
00:05:32I mean, Gary was so loved by everybody
00:05:34because of what he did outside of the game as well.
00:05:37He was probably the first one of our managers
00:05:40who committed himself to going to every town and village.
00:05:44You know, if there was an event on, Gary would go to it.
00:05:46He loved the giggle, loved the laugh.
00:05:48Loved being in the middle of all the lads.
00:05:50Loved being in the dressing room.
00:05:51Football was his life, you know.
00:05:53Everyone was hugely fond of Gary.
00:05:55He was such a great person to play for.
00:05:58He was a great man, you know,
00:05:59seeing what he'd achieved on the pitch.
00:06:01A strong character.
00:06:04People looked up to him.
00:06:06You just couldn't understand why this had happened.
00:06:08You know, it wasn't so long ago that he was with the guy.
00:06:12I remember when he was appointed, everybody was excited.
00:06:14He had a plan for us to go forward.
00:06:16He changed a lot of things in terms of footballing-wise
00:06:18and behind the scenes.
00:06:20He made sure that it was strict.
00:06:23It was sort of a club environment.
00:06:24We had the whole professional set-up, which he put in place,
00:06:27which really turned the corner
00:06:28and why the results started to pick up.
00:06:29You can't really compare it to where I first come in, to be honest.
00:06:33The nutrition, the science, the way we trained,
00:06:37everything, it was spot on.
00:06:39The weeks after his death, I mean,
00:06:41the whole country sort of came together in a way
00:06:44because, I mean, the office in Cardiff,
00:06:46we were having visits every day, people leaving flowers.
00:06:49In a very sad way, it didn't unify the nation.
00:06:53We know how lucky the country was to have him
00:06:56as a player and a manager for as long as we did.
00:06:59Of course, I looked at him differently
00:07:01to what probably the football supporters look at him
00:07:05because they look at him as a football player.
00:07:08He was my friend, you know.
00:07:10He was my friend.
00:07:28Vielen Dank.
00:07:58But I'm given that opportunity because of the circumstances which nobody could foresee.
00:08:05If you lose a friend, it's awful.
00:08:09This was different because, you know, then I'm doing his job.
00:08:12The only way he sort of was down after doing so well.
00:08:15When you look at it, it's not often a manager has to replace somebody that was doing well.
00:08:18They'd had good results and he'd been working.
00:08:21So why would you want to change that, you know?
00:08:23They've won four out of the last five games.
00:08:25And it's not just the wins, it's the philosophy and the style of play,
00:08:30which I think we all agree has been refreshing and, you know, we've enjoyed it.
00:08:35I can't believe how hard it must have been for him just to step in there.
00:08:38You know, I'm sure the job was always a dream for him, but not in these circumstances.
00:08:42It's not going to be easy. I know that. It never is.
00:08:47And certainly in this situation, maybe a little bit more difficult, but it's something I'm prepared for.
00:08:53If I didn't think I could affect the situation, I wouldn't have taken the job.
00:08:56I suppose Gary Speed's legacy will be what happens next in a sense. Is that right?
00:09:03I knew it would be tough, but I didn't think it would be as hard as it became, you know?
00:09:09It just seemed a bit, I don't want to be disrespectful, but a bit meaningless to play football.
00:09:14It was just, well, what's the point?
00:09:15You know, even in the office in Cardiff, sitting in the office, certainly in the early days,
00:09:20I didn't like to sit in the chair. I didn't like to be in that office by myself.
00:09:24You know, Speedo had been there like only a month or whatever, two months before.
00:09:28We didn't have that drive and, you know, we all wanted to because we wanted to do it for him.
00:09:33But at the same time, it seemed like we couldn't, you know, we didn't have enough.
00:09:37We just didn't have enough inside of us to get going again.
00:09:40The nation was in mourning, certainly the players were in mourning as well.
00:09:49And I was pushing the players, I think, too hard.
00:09:52What I should have been a bit more understanding of what they were going through as well.
00:10:01No, results weren't good.
00:10:03And that wasn't nothing to do with the players, it was everything to do with me.
00:10:07The atmosphere in the camp wasn't great at times.
00:10:10You know, I came into the camp for the first time for the Serbia game, where we lost 6-1 and you could still feel the burden.
00:10:18One of the persons I would have spoke to in a situation like that would have been him.
00:10:24Of course you can't, he's not there.
00:10:27I didn't have enough courage to change what he'd been doing around to what I wanted to do.
00:10:34I remember travelling back from the game on the bus, completely lost in my thoughts.
00:10:44It just hits you and you say, right, that's it.
00:10:47That's the end of that.
00:10:47I had to stand up really and start being myself more and show a bit of courage and do exactly what I wanted to do rather than what speedy was doing.
00:11:00You know, I spoke to one or two members of my immediate staff about, you know, changing this and changing that, and they were sceptical.
00:11:08But I was adamant that it was the way to go.
00:11:10And of course the big thing was to change Aaron with Ashley, the captain.
00:11:14I knew Aaron was very close with speeds, but I could see it having an effect on his game on the pitch, which was the last thing we needed.
00:11:25And yeah, maybe I was one of the most affected in the team.
00:11:29Looking back now, I think it was the right thing to do probably and help me, you know, overcome that.
00:11:36Everyone always asks, like, what was it like of Aaron?
00:11:38And it was completely fine.
00:11:39You know, I've seen him when we returned up to next camp.
00:11:42We just didn't even mention it, to be honest.
00:11:45We've never mentioned it.
00:11:46Aaron could have gone another way.
00:11:49Had he taken a different approach, shown a different attitude towards Ashley getting the captaincy,
00:11:56we probably wouldn't have achieved what we've just achieved because he is that important to us, Aaron, you know.
00:12:09He needed to make it into his team, which he has, and this is Chris Coleman's team.
00:12:30Now or never?
00:12:40No, it's not now or never.
00:12:41You know, the teams in the future can qualify whenever, but, you know, for this group now,
00:12:45I think the time's perfect, the time's right, we're settled.
00:12:48We want to get it done this time.
00:12:50We needed the first game to get the campaign up and running.
00:12:53We needed to get the win.
00:12:55No matter how we did it.
00:12:56I wasn't saying, you know, we've got to finish first or second.
00:13:06I just thought after five or six games, if we're third, we didn't want to shout.
00:13:13And it was all about making sure we were in touch and distance.
00:13:17And that meant we needed to stay in games.
00:13:21We're not going to settle.
00:13:27There's not going to be a campaign where we settle for nearly doing it.
00:13:31And I'm going to pat on the back for nearly doing it.
00:13:33This has to be we've done it.
00:13:35I just felt we were too nice.
00:13:37And we are, as a nation.
00:13:38The Welsh people are nice people.
00:13:40If we need to play ugly for ten minutes, that's what we do.
00:13:44That's what teams do to us.
00:13:46Teams don't come to Cardiff and lie down for us.
00:13:49And when we go to their backyard, they make it as difficult as they can for us.
00:13:53The biggest impact, I would argue, was the fans.
00:13:57They got stronger and stronger, believed even more.
00:14:00Carried us through difficult moments in games.
00:14:04You could sense the excitement.
00:14:06Sort of the passion was really there.
00:14:08That's when we really started to tip off, because the fans were unbelievable.
00:14:10And they did that because they saw what the players were bringing.
00:14:16It was the fact that they looked at the players who were ready.
00:14:19Ready for anything.
00:14:20Ready for the challenge.
00:14:22Ready to do anything for Wales.
00:14:23And it was definitely a switch that went on.
00:14:27And everybody's thinking that, you know, we're onto something here.
00:14:31Everything just seemed like it was in the right place.
00:14:34And every game, getting that bit more belief, that bit more momentum.
00:14:37And this team was just realising exactly what we're capable of doing.
00:14:41Mark gave me the news.
00:14:43And I forgot, actually, about anything else.
00:14:46I just wanted to go over to where our boys were, all our supporters were.
00:14:49And the players all joined in.
00:14:52What does this mean for Wales, for these people, Chris?
00:14:55It means everything.
00:14:56They've dreamed of it.
00:14:57We've all dreamed about this.
00:15:01This is what it's all about.
00:15:02This is what we've always wanted.
00:15:03We're going to a tournament.
00:15:04Our first finals in 58 years to go to France was amazing.
00:15:07And our Welsh supporters, our fans, our comrades, as we kept calling them,
00:15:11they've been waiting a long time for this.
00:15:13I just keep looking at the table, and it's always nice to see.
00:15:16You know, you never spell Wales with a Q with you, but now you look at it,
00:15:20it's got Q and Wales.
00:15:25We've had this target for such a long time, and for it to happen,
00:15:28it was more of a relief than anything.
00:15:29But no, some team had to do it, and I always believed that we had the talent
00:15:34in the squad to do it.
00:15:35There's quite a few in Wales that thought that they'd never see that day.
00:15:39The decision to expand the European Championship has already proven it's worth.
00:15:45Several nations will be making their first ever appearance at the Euro,
00:15:49and we are all firmly convinced that this will be a fantastic tournament
00:15:54for everyone involved.
00:15:55And the first team drawn in pot number one,
00:15:59England.
00:16:01England.
00:16:02England.
00:16:03England.
00:16:04And after pot one, as Ruud said it, we have pot four.
00:16:08Four.
00:16:09Four.
00:16:10Four.
00:16:11Okay.
00:16:12Wales.
00:16:13Wales.
00:16:14Also for Wales, this is the first ever participation.
00:16:18They participated in 58 in the World Cup,
00:16:22and they will play England, as you have already seen.
00:16:25Next team will be England and Wales.
00:16:30Slovakia.
00:16:32La Russi.
00:16:33La Russi.
00:16:34Russia.
00:16:35Russia.
00:16:36Russia.
00:16:45I remember watching the World Cup.
00:16:47My earliest recollection was 1978 in Argentina, you know.
00:16:52Also I've always dreamed about being in our tournament and missed out as a player.
00:16:57So then to get it as a manager, it was the most exhilarating feeling.
00:17:05It's difficult to explain to anybody that hasn't been what we've been through as a nation,
00:17:10you know, where it was something we've always wished for.
00:17:12And to get it, yeah, incredible.
00:17:15Incredible.
00:17:26We deserve all this intrusion and all this pressure.
00:17:31We deserve it.
00:17:32We've been asking for it long enough.
00:17:33Now we can't say, oh, it's a little bit, you know.
00:17:36This is what we've been screaming for.
00:17:45Six months prior, you know, we had families and friends all telling us about their plans
00:17:48and their trips and the money that's being spent and the camper vans that are selling out
00:17:52and everything like that.
00:17:53So we started to get the feeling of how big a tournament it was.
00:17:56I'm off to France tomorrow, flying over to Bordeaux.
00:17:58I'm ridiculously excited.
00:18:00They heard my missus' words to me this morning.
00:18:02She said, you're ridiculously excited.
00:18:05The atmosphere in France, in Bordeaux, in Toulouse, wherever you went,
00:18:08there was a semi-Welsh there.
00:18:10They embraced the tournament.
00:18:11I mean, I think the story of the tournament was with the Welsh supporters.
00:18:14I woke up to people drinking and singing and chanting.
00:18:27So you could look out your window, you could see them all in the pub across the road.
00:18:30It was an unbelievable atmosphere.
00:18:33Johnny Owen, who's been on his own tour de France following Wales.
00:18:37How many people do you think will go, whether they've got tickets or not?
00:18:41It's kind of a once in a lifetime trip.
00:18:43Everybody that I know who's into football is going.
00:18:46Everybody.
00:18:47So what it's going to be like walking down Bordeaux High Street?
00:18:49Like Merthyr High Street, I think, you know, when I'm walking down there.
00:18:52So when we travel to the game, then you know, you know,
00:18:55we arrive in the city in Bordeaux and you're going to feel it.
00:18:59It probably hadn't sunk in prior to that,
00:19:02that we were actually going to be at a major tournament.
00:19:05There was like, you know, there was thousands of people all right round the bus,
00:19:08just screaming at us, you know, willing us to do well.
00:19:12There was just red jerseys, taffs everywhere.
00:19:17It was unbelievable.
00:19:18We've had good home crowds and we take the faithful away,
00:19:28but France was something different.
00:19:30We know it's a tough test against a very tough Slovakian team.
00:19:35We will probably be favourites because, you know, they're a good team.
00:19:40They've been getting some great results.
00:19:42And if you look at the four teams in the group, then we are the underdogs.
00:19:45You still have to look around and enjoy the surroundings because it means something, you know.
00:19:51It means we have arrived at a tournament and we need to see about that.
00:19:56That game was talked about for months. It was the first one.
00:19:59The name Slovakia was just constantly being thrown at you.
00:20:02You could sense that excitement, that anticipation.
00:20:05You know, we just stood in the corridor listening and it was, you know,
00:20:08sort of a surreal moment, unbelievable feeling.
00:20:11I remember looking at the players, because sometimes you can be affected by that,
00:20:15but there wasn't a sign. There wasn't a sign of that on our lads, you know.
00:20:18I knew we wouldn't get beat and I knew we'd perform.
00:20:24Obviously, I've experienced big games before and big crowds outside
00:20:27and it was just one of those feelings again, just a massive game.
00:20:30The atmosphere was right up.
00:20:31If you're playing for Real Madrid, then every week, you know, it's a circus, isn't it?
00:20:36You can't, everywhere he walks, he's got one of these in his face and cameras everywhere.
00:20:41Some of our players, you know, play championship football.
00:20:44You know, one or two a little bit lower than that they've been playing.
00:20:47So they won't be used to all of this.
00:20:49So it's nice to have somebody like that, that's at the other end,
00:20:52with all the attention and all the pressure.
00:20:58He was just a positive vibe to be around.
00:21:00He was showing any nerves at any stage, big pressure on him as well.
00:21:05I think everybody just fed off the energy of the fans
00:21:08and was just really looking forward to the game and, yeah, what happened after that was amazing.
00:21:13And that still gives me goosebumps thinking about it now.
00:21:15We turn up, we went out to warm up and you could just see a massive sea of red.
00:21:24I think everybody who gets interviewed for this will tell you about Bordeaux's anthem,
00:21:28how emotional it was.
00:21:29I think that's when it hit home that, you know, exactly what it meant to the Welsh people.
00:21:33The Welsh people.
00:21:34The Welsh people.
00:21:38The Welsh people.
00:21:43The Welsh people.
00:21:49ZANG EN MUZIEK
00:22:19ZANG EN MUZIEK
00:22:49ZANG EN MUZIEK
00:22:51If you could press pause and stay in that moment, you know, he'd be there forever.
00:23:27We worked on it for two, three days, and within 30 seconds, we did exactly what we worked on.
00:23:33Defenders are flying everywhere.
00:23:37Ben Davis kicks it off the line.
00:23:39You know, it could have been a lot different for us.
00:23:40And after that, we settled down really quickly into the game.
00:23:48You either love international football and the experience of it, and you're representing your country and you get it, you understand what it means.
00:23:56Or you don't.
00:23:57You know, there's no such thing as a life in between.
00:23:59And luckily, we've got one of the best players in the world.
00:24:03Totally gets it.
00:24:04That was the moment where I think we'd all been waiting for.
00:24:25The noise levels were just through the roof.
00:24:34And it was like, oh, we're here.
00:24:36You know, this is what it's all about.
00:24:37This is what we've always wanted.
00:24:38It really felt like the tournament had started for us.
00:24:54Hey, we're firmly on top of us.
00:24:56We can't get out of our own half.
00:24:57We're too deep.
00:24:58We're hanging on to a 1-1 here.
00:25:00They get equalised, and then you're thinking, no, come on, can we just hold on?
00:25:04You know, you get to the 70-minute mark, and, you know, the lads are getting tired.
00:25:09Obviously, tough games, playing against world-class players.
00:25:11You hear the anthem that's come from the fans, and it does give you that extra 10%.
00:25:15I've been fortunate to play football for a long time.
00:25:17I've never seen a connection between the team and a set of fans like that first game.
00:25:22We need to grab the pitch.
00:25:23We need to get behind the Slovakian defence.
00:25:26We brought Hal on, and we brought Joel Ledley on.
00:25:29And as it worked, it was a move straight off the training ground.
00:25:32In that system, we try to go from side to side as much as we can to move the opposition round.
00:25:38Threaded pass from Joel Ledley, Grip, or to the perfect player you want in that situation,
00:25:42which Wu doesn't think twice.
00:25:43The way that we just slid into the corner flag, and, yeah, it was just, it was just an overwhelming experience.
00:26:06You know, the atmosphere there on the pitch with the players, with the supporters, again, it's gone up another level.
00:26:15You could just sense the relief, that excitement, that feeling of, we're going to win our first game in the European Championships.
00:26:24To score early on in the game and go on and win it in a very difficult game, emotions are high, you know,
00:26:40showed that this group was a very special group, that, you know, getting there wasn't going to be enough.
00:26:45We talked about the fact, and we kept saying it, and we believed it, we weren't saying it for a cliche to, you know,
00:26:57get the focus off the England game.
00:26:58The first game is the biggest game in the tournament.
00:27:00If you can win that, especially in a group stage, you set yourself up perfectly to take the pressure off the rest of the games.
00:27:05Have things changed? The fact that you are top of the group, you have three points, England have one point.
00:27:13Has that changed any of your preparations, any of your thinking of the game?
00:27:18No.
00:27:19Group B, England's first opponents have just been drawn, and it is Wales.
00:27:24Ho-ho, what a draw that is. England against Wales. Come on.
00:27:29I'm born and bred Swansea. You know, very passionate Welshman.
00:27:34So I've got a chip on my shoulder.
00:27:36As soon as we mention England, sport, I want to beat England.
00:27:41The build-up to the group stage was all about England.
00:27:44It's all people talked about was England game, England game, and what's going to happen, and who's going to win,
00:27:48and that's going to be the game of the group.
00:27:50I was worried about the spotlight, the scrutiny, just the bigger picture,
00:27:54just everything that would go along with the tournament, you know,
00:27:56and if we'd be able to cope, because it was something new to us.
00:27:59It was a circus, that game, it really was.
00:28:01It was everything that come around it for just 90 minutes of football.
00:28:04Things are going to be said.
00:28:06This thing was going to be a little bit of tuna throwing.
00:28:09And actually, you know, who says what, why?
00:28:13Once the whistle's gone, that's when all the questions will be asked,
00:28:17and you've got to make sure you've got the answers.
00:28:19It was all about getting enough points to get through.
00:28:21That's all that mattered.
00:28:24England was the second game of three, and that's how we tried to approach it, you know.
00:28:28I think our boys enjoyed the fact that the English media printed everything we said,
00:28:33you know, and then complained back to us.
00:28:39England big themselves up.
00:28:41Passion, pride, patriotism.
00:28:43Did you say all that, and did you quite mean it?
00:28:45And are you quite surprised how the way that maybe some of the England camp have bitten?
00:28:51I saw the interview with Baylor, he was giggling, you know.
00:28:55The media are going to try and put words in his mouth at times.
00:28:58How would England players get into this current Welsh team?
00:29:00None.
00:29:00It's a massive statement.
00:29:04You know, we are a small country.
00:29:05We haven't got a lot of players to pick from,
00:29:07and it's a bit like us against the world, you know,
00:29:09sort of like siege mentality, and that's what we have.
00:29:12We knew that the press were going to ask these sort of questions,
00:29:15so we were just like, let's play up a bit for them,
00:29:18and let's just, you know, tell them how it is.
00:29:21I never said they didn't have passion or pride.
00:29:23I just feel, in my opinion, that we have more.
00:29:27I couldn't care less, to be honest with you,
00:29:28or who takes their corners or wherever.
00:29:32You know, we were just, all we were saying is that we want to play for Wales.
00:29:35We were proud of being Welsh.
00:29:38It's not like we don't respect England.
00:29:40They're a great team.
00:29:41People seem to see the love or hate the way we were going about it,
00:29:45but it was working for us.
00:29:47There was always going to be something on it,
00:29:49because it was the middle game of the group.
00:29:51We know how hard it is for Wales.
00:29:53For England, the pressure on you at the tournament,
00:29:56we could feel it on them, you know.
00:29:58You know, we could feel it.
00:29:59It was incredible.
00:30:11I was really looking forward to it.
00:30:12I thought, you know, this was going to be the time
00:30:14where, you know, we can get one over them.
00:30:17I remember coming in at half-time and we were a goal up against England, the Euros,
00:30:45and still you could sense that we weren't quite happy with the way we were performing
00:30:48and we knew if maybe things didn't improve and we didn't start playing a bit better,
00:30:52then it would come back to bite us.
00:30:55Our goal in the first half probably didn't help us.
00:30:57I think that's when we had something to hang on to
00:31:01and the team just wanted to try and protect that.
00:31:08We didn't play how we should have,
00:31:09and maybe the occasion got to us a little bit.
00:31:12We sat there with 30 seconds to go on four points,
00:31:27which are probably enough to take you through.
00:31:28And then within a space of seconds,
00:31:42we'd missed that opportunity.
00:31:47To concede late on was hard to take.
00:32:03And I was disappointed that we hadn't showed England how good we are.
00:32:07We didn't put it all on the line.
00:32:10I always look at myself first.
00:32:17I think maybe I should have worked differently through the week.
00:32:19Maybe my messages to the players was too much fighting and not enough expression.
00:32:24It was horrible feelings, one of the worst I've had in football.
00:32:26It was just, I don't think it was a fact that we lost last minute.
00:32:29I think it was, we just didn't give the account of ourselves we should have.
00:32:33Just before they scored, I checked the screen to see the time,
00:32:40and I think it was two minutes to go.
00:32:41I actually won one at the time.
00:32:43There was a guy in the Welsh End crying.
00:32:46I just thought if I wasn't a player,
00:32:49I'd probably be in that end with the fans anyway,
00:32:52and maybe something just come over me to think,
00:32:55and almost to give a message of saying,
00:32:57you know, come on, keep your chins up,
00:32:59because, you know, it isn't over.
00:33:00As much as this hurts now,
00:33:02we've still got another game in a few days.
00:33:04We need you.
00:33:08As soon as that England game was done, the whistle had gone.
00:33:10We'd lost.
00:33:11It didn't matter. It was finished.
00:33:13All gone.
00:33:14All that matters is Russia.
00:33:15We got away from the hotel.
00:33:16We didn't go anywhere near the training pitch.
00:33:19We had to walk on the beach, we had to bite to eat,
00:33:21and it was a good vibe.
00:33:22Can I just ask, how long did you talk about the England game?
00:33:25Or maybe to put it another way,
00:33:26how long were you allowed to talk about the England game?
00:33:30What England game?
00:33:30I think it spoke volumes about the players,
00:33:32that they were able to deal with that situation,
00:33:36and then box it off, put that in isolation,
00:33:39and they say, right, no, we've got Russia now.
00:33:42It just showed the other side of the team.
00:33:56We dealt with adversity far greater than that prior,
00:33:59so we knew the strength of the group.
00:34:01It's always going to be sad that every team gets on grid,
00:34:04but there's something special we go year away.
00:34:07And we've got boys from different backgrounds,
00:34:09everything, but everyone seems to just click.
00:34:12Oh, my God, mate.
00:34:16A lot of us, I suppose, have grown up together as well,
00:34:18coming through this similar sort of age group.
00:34:20This is what we always wanted to do as kids.
00:34:22Now to be playing on the highest level with each other,
00:34:26having a laugh, enjoying it,
00:34:28is what we all want to be doing.
00:34:30This generation of ours, the Ramseys, the Bales,
00:34:36they're all in the same sort of age group,
00:34:38and they would have started through the mini-football.
00:34:40Julia players, sort of primary school children,
00:34:43getting away from the 11 players in a giant field,
00:34:45in a very heavy ball, and trying to kick the ball,
00:34:48it's hard to come in one direction instead of passing it.
00:34:51I just think that has given us a bedding
00:34:53where we can have players who will play football,
00:34:55because we like to pass the ball.
00:35:00The younger players in the UK don't get as much exposure
00:35:05to the ball as maybe the players in Spain.
00:35:08And a lot of that has to do with weather and facilities.
00:35:10It's not because we don't want to coach them,
00:35:11we don't want to work with them.
00:35:13We can't.
00:35:14They've got nowhere to play.
00:35:15They haven't got to surface.
00:35:18You make younger players better by the younger players
00:35:22having better facilities, and coaches who want to progress as coaches.
00:35:27The earlier you get them and the better you work with them,
00:35:30there's a better chance that you've got.
00:35:31The key is to be able to see the roots of the first team.
00:35:34At some football clubs and in some nations,
00:35:36you probably can't see that, or you're many, many years away.
00:35:39But I think at Wales, you could see, you know,
00:35:40if you've done well for the 21s or the 19s,
00:35:42or even no victory shield level, there was a fast track there available
00:35:46where Wales weren't afraid to throw you in at the deep end,
00:35:49no matter how young you were.
00:35:50You know, we've seen that with Gareth.
00:35:51It's starting to show now that what we started to do maybe 10 years ago
00:35:57is coming to fruition, and we're seeing the results.
00:36:00Obviously, it started under Gary Speed going back to basics
00:36:03and making it more professional around the place with Wales,
00:36:05and then obviously this gaffer come in and done incredible things.
00:36:08And I think we started to feel like there was a turn in the fortunes
00:36:12and a turn in team spirit as well.
00:36:13It's gone full circle where players want to come to the Welsh camps,
00:36:17even if they're injured.
00:36:18And that's where we are now, and Chris has taken on that again
00:36:22and has made it one of the best international setups there is, really.
00:36:27You know, there's a logo, Together Stronger.
00:36:30It comes from the players and us as a staff
00:36:34being in some real tough situations where we have been in.
00:36:38And sticking together and coming through it,
00:36:40it's not about going out for a few beers and having a laugh and a joke.
00:36:43It's easy, that is, but that lasts for five minutes.
00:36:45It's all the other stuff when you've been in real tough situations,
00:36:49and people don't turn their back on that situation,
00:36:52don't turn it back on you.
00:36:53We always speak about Ash and Rambo and Balo and Joe Allen.
00:36:58There's other players who are so important.
00:37:01You know, Joe Ledley, Andy Kings, Sam Vogt, Simon Church.
00:37:04Chris Gunter's got 70-odd caps.
00:37:07Unbelievable.
00:37:08You know what I mean?
00:37:10This is what it's like to play with a 90 million pound player.
00:37:18I could go through them all.
00:37:20They're always there.
00:37:21They don't miss games.
00:37:22Sometimes they don't always play, but they always play a huge part.
00:37:26And they're massive.
00:37:27But they run the dressing room.
00:37:29I don't run the dressing room.
00:37:30It's their dressing room.
00:37:31The guys who haven't been on the grass, who haven't been starting,
00:37:34you know, they're chomping at the bit.
00:37:36And they're not very happy that they haven't been on the grass.
00:37:38And I like that.
00:37:39The first instinct is disappointment that you're not playing.
00:37:42But then there's no point dwelling on that
00:37:43because you can't change the manager's decision.
00:37:45You've got to be there and you've got to try and help the boys
00:37:48and make the boys relax, you know, for such big games.
00:37:51The days building up to the Russia game was very, very positive.
00:37:54And I think a lot of people were expected to be negative.
00:37:57It was a good time to just, I suppose,
00:37:59try and get over the England defeat as quick as possible
00:38:02because I didn't feel we played that bad.
00:38:03It was just, especially to lose in the last minute,
00:38:06it really does take the wind out of you.
00:38:07But I think just to make sure everybody was on the same page
00:38:10was still ready to go.
00:38:11We've got everything to play for.
00:38:12And, yeah, I think it definitely helped.
00:38:14It's freezing!
00:38:16My hands are freezing.
00:38:18No, no, no, it's not too much.
00:38:19It's just 80.
00:38:20It's 80.
00:38:22This is the time of your life.
00:38:25You don't know it, but it is.
00:38:27Go and express yourself.
00:38:28Go and enjoy it.
00:38:29You know your job.
00:38:31You know what it is.
00:38:32You're a good player, otherwise you wouldn't be here.
00:38:34That was a real turning point for us where we said, okay, so what?
00:38:38We just lost to England.
00:38:39It was a massive game.
00:38:40But we're still in a position where we know if we win, we go through.
00:38:42So we would have taken that before.
00:38:44So it's not, you know, it's not all doom and gloom.
00:38:46The credit's got to go to the manager for that.
00:38:48The psychologist and all the stuff we've got around.
00:38:50Because they pick us up after that England game.
00:38:52Because it's an honest group, this group of players.
00:38:54And when we lose and don't play well, you know, the boys really feel it.
00:38:57When they're in camp, it's tough.
00:38:59The camps are hard.
00:39:00They're very serious.
00:39:01But at the same time, they enjoy it.
00:39:03Because they've got that respect for each other.
00:39:05And they've got that bond with each other.
00:39:06You did that all day.
00:39:08Hold on.
00:39:08I wouldn't go very far.
00:39:10Just like this all the way.
00:39:11Another wink.
00:39:12Bomba.
00:39:13Bomba.
00:39:14Bamboozle the air defence.
00:39:15Bamboozle.
00:39:16Good with bamboozle.
00:39:18We tend to forget these players are human beings.
00:39:20And they've got to enjoy this experience as well.
00:39:23They enjoy playing football for the country.
00:39:25Sometimes you put too much pressure on them.
00:39:34We did a video.
00:39:35We did a song for the tournament with the boys.
00:39:37And we did a video with the team about two months ago.
00:39:39And you could tell then.
00:39:40You know, I was chatting to Joe Allen saying how great I thought it knew he was and stuff.
00:39:44And we were joking and laughing.
00:39:47And you could just tell there was such a bond there.
00:39:50Straight away, you know.
00:39:51And by the end of the video, they were jumping up and down with it.
00:39:53I was watching the Rocky.
00:39:54Was it Rocky 4?
00:39:55With the Russian in the day.
00:39:56And that set it up nicely.
00:39:57I think a few boys might have watched that.
00:40:00It's strange really.
00:40:01Because going into it, a lot of us felt that it could possibly be the last game of the tournament
00:40:05if it didn't go our way.
00:40:05So I think that spurred everyone on.
00:40:08Can't decide the result almost.
00:40:10The result will be whatever it is.
00:40:12You decide how you want the performance to go.
00:40:15Within our dressing room, we knew that we can beat this team.
00:40:18If we're going to go out in the tournament, we'll go out on our terms, playing our way.
00:40:21We knew exactly what we wanted to do.
00:40:23Have a go.
00:40:23In the first whistle, it just all clicked into place.
00:40:52Not often, as a coach, do you sit on the sideline and watch the team play and really enjoy it.
00:41:01Our performance, I think, is one of the best in a Welsh shirt.
00:41:05To talk is easy, but to show what we can do is the hard bit.
00:41:10I was looking at the boys in front, thinking this is a good team.
00:41:12You know, these are good players.
00:41:13Especially the way the forward players attack the game.
00:41:15We were going for those passes that sometimes don't come off.
00:41:21If you don't try them, you're never going to know.
00:41:24Joe Allen has it back.
00:41:25Plays it through for Aaron Ramsey, who's onside.
00:41:27Rebs it!
00:41:28Yeah!
00:41:30Wales won!
00:41:31That's where it's called!
00:41:32It's ready!
00:41:34Gareth Bale's got a bit of space.
00:41:35The players to his left, if you want to try and use Neil Taylor.
00:41:38Oh, Taylor's in!
00:41:39A chance for two for Wales.
00:41:40Oh, it's saved by the keeper.
00:41:42Taylor at the second attack.
00:41:43Makes it two!
00:41:45Chris Gunter's on my side, on the dugout side.
00:41:54He's playing brilliantly.
00:41:55So when he turned around and said to me,
00:41:57enjoy this gaffer, because this doesn't happen often.
00:42:00And I thought, you know, this particular game,
00:42:04there's everything on it.
00:42:05And Ramsey leaves it for Chris Gunter, who can scamper towards the
00:42:08Russian penalty area.
00:42:09Gives it to Ramsey, who's towards the edge of the D.
00:42:12He's got options inside the area.
00:42:13Bale is one of them!
00:42:15And no one else can harm me.
00:42:18The way that you can harm me.
00:42:22I need to know...
00:42:24Bale!
00:42:25Bale!
00:42:26That's the Bale!
00:42:29At long last, Gareth Bale gets a goal on the night.
00:42:33Three in three group stage games.
00:42:36Round of 16.
00:42:38Here they come.
00:42:39Wales three.
00:42:40Russia nil.
00:42:41And almost inevitably,
00:42:43it's that man again, Gareth Bale!
00:42:52I wanted to make sure everybody realised who Wales were and what we're capable of.
00:42:57We can only imagine what it was like back in Wales.
00:43:00I'd love to have been there myself.
00:43:02The celebrations after that game were great because to finish top and to be able to call ourselves the best team in that group was unbelievable.
00:43:08It was, you know, it was a dream, it was a massive dream for us.
00:43:11It felt like a lot of times that every person in Wales was there.
00:43:13It didn't seem real that there were so many people out there, but we were really proud of our fans.
00:43:20Not just in the stadiums, outside the stadiums.
00:43:22Everybody seemed to love our Welsh fans there and we left a good impression on France, I think.
00:43:27Everywhere we went, we'd seen them in their numbers, we heard them.
00:43:29Don't take me home and everywhere you went, you know, the players singing it in the hotel.
00:43:33It was just very infectious because, you know, just people there to enjoy themselves.
00:43:37You see support like that and it does give you, you know, extra motivation.
00:43:42I mean, it's back in Mertham, I mean, drinking red wine for the rest of their lives, you know.
00:43:45And they thought it was vinegar until then.
00:43:48But we're in France, we're enjoying it.
00:43:50What's next? I'm going to Toulouse now.
00:43:52I'm going to get there. I don't know. I'll get there.
00:44:01The likes of Germany, England, Spain, all these kind of big nations are in the other half of the draw.
00:44:08So you must see this as a great opportunity potentially to go much further in the tournament.
00:44:13It doesn't matter who comes out of the hat, it's going to be a tough game.
00:44:16I think because of what's at stake, just running a lot of the time.
00:44:21on pure emotion, you know.
00:44:23Save the national team!
00:44:25Save the national team!
00:44:27The world breaks on fire!
00:44:29Your defence is terrified!
00:44:31The world breaks on fire!
00:44:33Your defence is terrified!
00:44:35The world breaks on fire!
00:44:37It's Paris. It's the Parc de France.
00:44:39It is Euro 2016.
00:44:41It is Wales against Northern Ireland.
00:44:45It was a hot day in Paris.
00:44:47It was a tough game. Two very organised teams.
00:44:51It felt at times a little bit from the fans that it was the first game where
00:44:55happy to be there, loving the experience, but we're favourites.
00:45:01We need to get through.
00:45:03I didn't see where we'd come through the first three games where people didn't expect us
00:45:07to perform or, you know.
00:45:09I think one or two people said we would do well to score a goal.
00:45:13So we came through that.
00:45:15We know where the team expected to go through here.
00:45:19You could almost feel the pressure in the stadium from both sides
00:45:21because it was somewhere we'd never been.
00:45:23And off the back of the Russia game, everyone expected us to have another game like that.
00:45:26Football's not like that. It's never like that.
00:45:29Probably our hardest game.
00:45:31And I...
00:45:33Some people may find that strange for me to say that.
00:45:37I could feel the nerves and the edginess on everybody.
00:45:43On our supporters as well.
00:45:45Even the red wall, I think, felt it on the day.
00:45:49They've been on a great unbeaten run going into the tournament.
00:45:53We played them not long ago before that, and I think we drew 1-1.
00:45:57So we knew it was going to be a battle.
00:45:59They don't give away easy goals.
00:46:01They're prepared to sit in and grind you down.
00:46:03They've certainly done their homework on us.
00:46:06As we had on them.
00:46:08Yeah, there was no complacency on our part.
00:46:10We knew we'd have to be right on it.
00:46:12And that the chances would be few and far between.
00:46:18They'll defend on a low block where there won't be a lot of space.
00:46:21The space will be in front of them.
00:46:23And they'll allow us to have the ball.
00:46:30I've been in that position before where you just have to keep going.
00:46:32Be patient. Move the ball as quick as you can.
00:46:35It was a different game.
00:46:37It wasn't a team trying to score against us.
00:46:39It was a team trying to stop us from scoring.
00:46:41So, you know, we struggled for periods of it.
00:46:43It wasn't an easy game plan at all.
00:46:49We didn't want to over-commit going forward and get caught on the counter.
00:46:52Because, you know, that's their game.
00:46:55They were solid at the back and made it tough.
00:46:57They were more comfortable than we were in the game.
00:47:06Their game plan was working.
00:47:07So, we said, half-time, calm down.
00:47:09They do this to every team.
00:47:11It'll be one by one goal.
00:47:12Maybe a little bit of luck with us or them.
00:47:14Make sure it's with us.
00:47:16Stay in the game.
00:47:25It looked like going to match for time.
00:47:26Possibly even penalties.
00:47:28We knew with Gareth and Aaron and Hal Upsap, we would get a chance.
00:47:35Rambo got it.
00:47:36He played a little one too with Hal.
00:47:38Then he slid Baylor in.
00:47:40The whole stadium erupted.
00:47:53You could feel relief.
00:47:56Helps when you've got some players who can produce some magic,
00:48:01and obviously Gaz did.
00:48:02Yeah, and the way the goal came, I think, summed up the type of game it was
00:48:06and the type of performance that was needed from us.
00:48:09There wasn't much between the teams.
00:48:12We were asked a different question in that game.
00:48:18It was in Paris in the stadium.
00:48:19I've always wanted to play in.
00:48:24I actually remember trying to get out of the way.
00:48:26I ended up hitting in full pelt and it was like a big car crash, to be honest.
00:48:30My shoulder was injured.
00:48:32We had about eight minutes left.
00:48:34I wanted to see the job out.
00:48:35I felt like I could do it.
00:48:37But yeah, I was in a lot of pain.
00:48:39He's the rock.
00:48:40He's the captain.
00:48:41He's the one everyone looks to.
00:48:42When you need a voice and he leads by example on the pitch,
00:48:45he puts his body on the line as you see,
00:48:47and you won't want to come off for any game.
00:48:52Looking back, maybe that was the wrong decision.
00:48:55It's hard in the game sometimes.
00:48:56You're so caught up in it that you are thinking straight.
00:49:00You know, the Northern All-Island fans were screaming.
00:49:05I think they felt, they sensed that they got a chance here.
00:49:09In all the games we played, that game lasted the longest.
00:49:15That one goal decided the game, but for us it was massive obviously then going into a quarter-final.
00:49:34For us we got through it because we had a player on the pitch that could make the difference.
00:49:41When we came through it and we won the game, it was fantastic.
00:49:46To share it with all the families and the kids coming on the pitch after was amazing.
00:49:50and definitely worth the fine from the FAW.
00:49:57We have took too many hours off work, we've spent too much money,
00:50:01but do we care? No, because we're in the quarter-final.
00:50:03Hey, Joe Arlan. I read it on Facebook, right?
00:50:09Two thirds of the World Service is covered in water, the rest is covered by Joe Arlan.
00:50:14Almost right.
00:50:20How do you keep fresh? It's a long old tournament.
00:50:36Yeah, it's great you're here, but even for players, it can get boring.
00:50:40Mentally you can start to get a bit stale. How do you ward against that?
00:50:44It was important for us to get the environment right from the start
00:50:48because none of us had any sort of expectations or knowledge
00:50:53of what at all what was going to be like when we actually got there.
00:50:57Two Ben Davises.
00:50:59And one Josh William.
00:51:02We were a family, we were a family, it was like living together,
00:51:04but we were living together for six weeks.
00:51:06Ready?
00:51:09Get in.
00:51:10Get in.
00:51:13What are these things?
00:51:17I can see your reflection behind me.
00:51:20The lads were getting on so well, it wasn't a chore to sort of be away with each other for that long.
00:51:23We loved every minute of it.
00:51:25Like being with your mates all the time, being on holiday and just enjoying the occasion.
00:51:29We're doing quizzes all the time, we're playing table tennis, we're watching games.
00:51:33We do everything together, we have a round of golf.
00:51:39I'm getting cramp in my forearm.
00:51:41The hotel was the relaxation area.
00:51:43We had to eat, sleep, play table tennis, darts.
00:51:47The younger lads played on the Playstations or Xbox or whatever they was playing.
00:51:51The fact that we all enjoy spending so much time with each other,
00:51:54it really does help in the downtime when maybe other teams will be bored.
00:51:58I think the standard of table tennis improved dramatically from the start to the end of the tournament.
00:52:04The rest of the staff are a bit scared to take a point off the gaffer.
00:52:08The gaffer thinks he's a good player.
00:52:11Oh, he's horrendous.
00:52:12They used to be on it all the time. Couldn't even get a go, could we?
00:52:21Trying to keep 23 players happy and involved for four to five weeks is always going to be a challenge.
00:52:29The Wales aren't the sole home nation left at Euro 2016.
00:52:34You dispatch from Northern Ireland.
00:52:36England, well, they did their own thing against Iceland.
00:52:39Surprised, happy, all of the above.
00:52:43Eddie, you've got a throw.
00:52:45Eddie, Eddie.
00:52:47Oh, yeah!
00:53:01I still don't know how it's got out, someone's leaked it or sent it to someone.
00:53:05You know, before I know it's all over Twitter and I'm starting to panic because I can't quite believe that.
00:53:14They come out and that was that.
00:53:16Nothing we could do about it.
00:53:19I think they're just confident young lads playing football, enjoying themselves, being away together.
00:53:24You know, and there's no disrespect to anybody. It was just the fact that the event, the time, when it happened, who it was.
00:53:32You know, you can't really describe, to be in that environment, again, like you say, after such a long time playing for Wales, to be part of it was something I'll never forget.
00:53:57Chris Gunter's going to potentially miss his brother's wedding. Neil Taylor is missing Beyonce tomorrow night, which he's very annoyed about. What are you missing out on? Or what do you hope you could miss out on?
00:54:09Um, I planned everything for after the final. So, um, I was, I was the clever one in the group, I think.
00:54:16I am experiencing feelings that I didn't know I was potential, or I'll have potential to feel. It's sensational. I mean, none of us can quite believe it, really.
00:54:25In terms of experiences that you've had in your life, where does this rank already?
00:54:27It's, it's on a par with my daughter's birth, I'd say. Um, better than any wedding that I've, that I've, that I've, that I've been to and said yes.
00:54:37Er, this is, yeah, this is just an open place.
00:54:43So, just been caught in an absolute downpour. There's all this, John Murray! John!
00:54:51John Murray, voice of Five Live. Predictions for tonight, please, John.
00:54:56Predictions for tonight. I'm gonna go for...
00:55:01Two, one, four. Be honest, John.
00:55:03Yeah, I'm gonna be honest. I'm gonna go for...
00:55:05Two, one, to Belgium.
00:55:08As I've said, John used to be the voice of Five Live.
00:55:11Far better people on it than him.
00:55:13Erm...
00:55:15That's me and John finished now, he's gone Belgium.
00:55:18We are finished.
00:55:19Correct, finished.
00:55:20I think the Belgian public thought when they saw they were gonna play Wales,
00:55:29they were probably rubbing their hands and thought, yeah,
00:55:31because the Belgium are a fantastic team.
00:55:33I think they're ranked second in the world.
00:55:35I think if you were asked the Belgian players themselves,
00:55:37they may have given you a different insight into what they were thinking
00:55:40because we've had some good games with them.
00:55:42And we've matched them.
00:55:44It felt like an away game, I suppose.
00:55:45Although we took loads of fans over there, the size of the stadium,
00:55:46the amount that Belgium bought, it felt like an away game.
00:55:47it felt like an away game.
00:56:05I mean, it was a nice British night, it was raining,
00:56:07it was a bit cooler.
00:58:27Total confidence that we were going to go on and score again.
00:58:31And I think they do that as well.
00:58:34We know they're going to get chances, but we were making the chances.
00:58:38I just remember being put in by a fail and I just made my way into the box.
00:58:47I remember standing there looking at him and I could see his options.
00:58:51We were all shopping for him just to pass their tails, was in acres of space.
00:58:53I just thought, hold on a minute, I can generate a bit of space.
00:58:58And he did something I never thought he was going to do.
00:59:01Definitely the best goal of my life.
00:59:14What a feeling in that goal was, it was amazing for Harland for the team.
00:59:17He sensed it was on to do it.
00:59:19He took the gamble and paid off.
00:59:21The noise, the eruption that happened at the time.
00:59:24Like I said, there was only a quarter probably of Welsh fans in the stadium, but it went crazy.
00:59:29I'd like to sit here and say, you know, I drilled him on it.
00:59:32Two or three days running.
00:59:34But I can't.
00:59:35We're probably 25 minutes away from going to a semi-final.
00:59:44I may have one or two moments.
00:59:51We had a drinks break and I was having a drink and Sean tried to throw a gel on to Rambo.
00:59:55Loved it on and tails is looking the other way and is sitting clean on the side of the head.
00:59:59The bench said afterwards, it sort of, you know, broke the pressure a little bit that we had a chance to laugh at something
01:00:03because we were obviously really nervous at 2-1.
01:00:06We were sort of pen backer for the last sort of 10 minutes or so.
01:00:09And I think it came from a free kick.
01:00:12Chris Gallop off, down the right.
01:00:15I think it was only five minutes ago and I'm thinking, don't cross it.
01:00:23It wasn't as if we were in the last minute or so.
01:00:26So you've seen Sam.
01:00:29It was perfect for me to go and attack him.
01:00:30Damn, when it's left, they said, I'm thinking, this is going in.
01:00:43What a header, by the way.
01:00:48The thing that would live most for me is the fact that it was in that corner.
01:00:53It was like a wave that came rushing down.
01:00:55And they were just going completely crazy.
01:00:59Knowing that, you know, we've got two goals on them here and there's only a couple of minutes to go,
01:01:03we're probably going to win the game.
01:01:05Not the best feeling I've had on a football pitch.
01:01:08You'd give anything to try and relive that five minutes or so.
01:01:12It was all a dream, honestly.
01:01:13It was all a dream for us, for it to have gone like that.
01:01:15You know, I've played for Wales for eight and a half years now
01:01:17and I've never seen a Welsh team play so well.
01:01:19And I think I sort of collapsed to the floor and just feeling the energy sort of zap out of me
01:01:23in terms of, you know, we've done it.
01:01:24To beat Belgium, favoured to the competition at the time,
01:01:48and to beat them 3-1 in the quarterfinals,
01:01:51you're going into the semifinals, you're one game away from the final.
01:01:54I'm a grown man and I don't cry a lot, but we are in the semifinal Wales.
01:01:59It didn't make any sense at the time.
01:02:00I remember after the game, we just said it so many times, like, what are we doing?
01:02:10So we've got to a tournament.
01:02:13Job done.
01:02:14Can we get out of the group? Job done.
01:02:15Hold on a minute, now we're in the semifinal.
01:02:17And it's like, wow.
01:02:19It's a wonderful backstory with yourself.
01:02:21You know, your contract ran out 1st of July.
01:02:24Without a club at the moment.
01:02:25Has your representative been a bit busy in the last few days?
01:02:28Erm, yeah.
01:02:37They were absolutely awesome.
01:02:40And this is the best time of my life.
01:02:44I never thought I'd see this day.
01:02:47What?
01:02:47There's a real party whenever Wales go away.
01:02:52Even when we didn't qualify, you know, there's a real sort of spirit de corps amongst the fans.
01:02:56And that's a lot to do with what Chris Coleman and SM Gary Speed before that tried to engineer and the Welsh FA.
01:03:01The Welsh FA have been brilliant in trying to create this atmosphere that when you go away to watch Wales, we're all a big family going.
01:03:07I don't think we could take any of it in because we weren't in the big cities out in France either, other than when it was at the matches.
01:03:14Dinal is a very quiet little, little town.
01:03:16I don't think any of us understood how big it was back home.
01:03:28I was speaking back to my wife when she was telling everybody in the village with the Welsh flag out the window and everybody was watching the game and all going off and work early.
01:03:37You heard about the fan parks and, you know, before the first game in there were you like, there's not even going to be one.
01:03:42But to see the videos after the game, you know, it was just another spine-tingling moment, you know.
01:03:48You're seeing all the drinks going up in the air and all the people celebrating.
01:03:52The people who had never really followed football, you know, just got grossed in it.
01:03:59You just don't understand how much it was affecting people back home and how crazy it was.
01:04:04You're watching those fan parks growing and growing and everybody in Wales was involved, you know, and that was great.
01:04:09But where we were, we were just very quiet.
01:04:10So how long have you been in France for?
01:04:27When did the tournament start?
01:04:29I can't remember, no.
01:04:3010th of June, was it?
01:04:32Yeah, we came over for the first game.
01:04:35So you wouldn't believe this.
01:04:36We went over to Toulouse for the Winkling game on a Thursday.
01:04:38They only shut the bloody fan zone, hadn't they?
01:04:41But we got to see the game in a bar called the Four Monkeys for the Ireland game.
01:04:45We were in the Ireland end.
01:04:46Fantastic fans.
01:04:47Unbelievable fans.
01:04:49So that was a real experience, you know.
01:04:51And we come here and there's all you guys around and all the squad walking down for a blinking ice cream.
01:04:57You can't believe it.
01:05:00It's far exceeded everything that I would ever, ever want, you know.
01:05:04And this has just put a cherry on the top, really, hasn't it?
01:05:07So thanks, guys.
01:05:08Thanks very much.
01:05:14I think they've surpassed anything that any rugby team has ever done before for Wales.
01:05:18Because football is such a global game, you know, rugby is what it does in countries, take it seriously.
01:05:23Whereas football, obviously, there's so many.
01:05:24So obviously we've got the semi-finals of World Cups in rugby.
01:05:28But this, you know, the country's never been caught up in a sporting event like this.
01:05:32So in fairness to them, think of one better, it'll be truly amazing.
01:05:37I'm sure you've got lots to work on now in the few days before the game.
01:06:00I remember looking at Alan Ramsey and Ben Davis straight away after the Belgium game when the whistle went.
01:06:17And they're laughing and crying.
01:06:19That must have hurt both players.
01:06:21They know they've done something special.
01:06:23They also know they're going to miss the next game.
01:06:25Two bookings in five games is a pretty harsh rule to be missing out on a semi-final tournament like that.
01:06:30But for me and Aaron, it was majorly disappointing.
01:06:33But I remember saying to them during the Belgian game, let's do this for the boys and get them to the semi-final.
01:06:38You've got to feel for them because they've done so much, the same as everybody else, to get us where we are.
01:06:44But again, that's a tournament of football.
01:06:46You foster this mentality with Chris of one game at a time, one opponent at a time.
01:06:51But how difficult is it now not to think you're in a semi-final, you're 90 minutes away from a final, you're 180 minutes away from potentially winning the European Championships.
01:07:01It must be very, very hard not to let the mind wander.
01:07:04It was similar to the Northern Ireland game, playing against a team that was defensive-minded, but they had a lot more quality.
01:07:18People hadn't talked about them that much at a tournament because they obviously weren't that expansive going forward and free-flowing, which we'd normally associate with a Portuguese team.
01:07:27Come the day, I think I was probably more nervous not being involved in that game than I was when I'm playing.
01:07:32It was just knowing that you had no control of what was happening.
01:07:35You're relying on other people and you can't affect the game.
01:07:39Fair play to the boys that come in. I think they did a great job, so nothing against them.
01:07:42But I just felt that they'd worked so hard to get there, it seemed a bit unfair that they were going to miss out.
01:07:48It was a strange feeling, but one I was excited and really looking forward to the challenge.
01:07:52You could see that they've done a lot of homework on us, which sometimes are the bigger teams you don't get.
01:07:56We've scored ten goals, I think it is.
01:07:59They were the highest scorers and Portugal have had to get to the semi-final a different way, but nevertheless, they found a way.
01:08:07In the first 10, 15, 20 minutes, you could see tactically, he'd set them up really well defensively and nullified us.
01:08:13They paid us a huge compliment. They went on a low block for most of the game.
01:08:17Two similar types of teams we had working quite quick on the break, same as them, and they defended very well, same as us.
01:08:23The game it was, and the way Portugal played against us, where they tried to shut all the doors and defend it deep, then on Aaron Ramsey, he can find something.
01:08:33It was just so frustrating for me to watch the team on the side. I felt like I would have had an effect on the game.
01:08:42He's a great compliment with Baylor.
01:08:49Because they're not just worrying about Baylor, they're also worrying about Ramsey.
01:08:51We probably had the better in the first half, you know, going in at nil-nil, I thought we were comfortable.
01:08:58We said that at halftime, it was about sort of taking the game to them.
01:09:01I still think, you know, at halftime, there wasn't that much between the teams, so I think coming out into the second half,
01:09:08we were still really positive that, you know, if we keep going, the chance may come and it might be enough to get us through.
01:09:13We were 45 minutes away from getting to a final.
01:09:34I never saw John Charles play, but my father told me he was like that, you know.
01:09:39Jumped above everybody, big shoulders, power.
01:09:46You've seen Ronaldo doing that, there's nothing we could have done about it.
01:09:52You know, I can't see anyone being able to head that ball.
01:09:55You know, he's sort of, you look round and he's hanging up there.
01:09:59You know, that's Cristiano Ronaldo, you know, he tends to stick them in the net.
01:10:02This is where they want to deliver the ball, to him.
01:10:05You can't jump as high as you can, nobody can.
01:10:07His shins are at, like, James Chester's head.
01:10:13From there, it took the energy out of us a little bit.
01:10:15And for Portugal, I think, if they go ahead, it was the perfect scenario for them to be able to defend,
01:10:21keep us out and try and hit us on a counter-attack.
01:10:23It was perfect for them.
01:10:24It changed the whole complexion of the game.
01:10:27It was the first time we had a mad five minutes and then they scored again.
01:10:30For them to score straight away, sort of, you know, it half killed the game off for us, really, in our own heads, I suppose.
01:10:38I could feel a fatigue on everyone up with 2-0 down as a semi-final.
01:10:45People underestimate the physical exertion that's taken out and the emotion that we've done.
01:11:07And I think it was one step too far in the end.
01:11:12It's difficult on the world stage against world-class players and that's what happens.
01:11:18You still do have in the back of your mind that if we'd had that little bit of luck on that day,
01:11:27then we could have been in that final.
01:11:32We'd do it all over again if we could and I don't think we'd have done a lot different.
01:11:40As soon as the whistle went and you're out, it was really, it was upset then, to be honest.
01:11:46You know, I think, um, I couldn't wait to go off the pitch.
01:11:50I had to go off the pitch just to go and sit by myself.
01:11:53I knew that was it.
01:11:55There was no final for me to go and play in.
01:12:00You always dreamed about it and you always wondered what it would be like
01:12:04and then you're finally lucky enough to get it
01:12:06and it's a hundred times better than what you thought it would be.
01:12:10And I was stopped.
01:12:11It's all done.
01:12:12It's finished.
01:12:13It was so gut-wrenching.
01:12:16It was really hard, you know, I remember being in the dressing room
01:12:23and everybody's still on the pitch.
01:12:25I didn't want to come back out.
01:12:27I knew I had to because I had to thank everybody, all the supporters there,
01:12:30to come to follow us and I had to do the media, which I really didn't want to do.
01:12:34We went through some tough times here and to put ourselves on the world map, I suppose,
01:12:45at a European tournament was a massive thing for us
01:12:48and to get so far in the tournament when people weren't necessarily expecting it.
01:12:53We were the third best in Europe, you know, or we are the third best in Europe.
01:12:57I think it doesn't just change football, I think it changed the country
01:13:01because these events don't come along very often.
01:13:04What we did in the Euros will have an impact on Welsh football for many years to come.
01:13:11It was the end of tournament for us, it wasn't the end of this team.
01:13:18I think it was a perfect example to any nation of how to approach a major tournament.
01:13:25If we were going out, we were going out together.
01:13:27If we were going through, we were going through together.
01:13:29And the fans were a part of that.
01:13:34We did something that, you know, people never thought we would do
01:13:37and we surpassed everybody's expectations.
01:13:39And as a country, we were an absolute credit to the tournament.
01:13:43The only thing that was missing was the trophy.
01:13:46As long as the experience was on the pitch for me,
01:13:48it was even our hotel in Dien Island.
01:13:50Everybody would be on the bus.
01:13:52The atmosphere is untouchable.
01:13:54Chris Gunther's playing his music.
01:13:56It's the same three songs.
01:13:57Every time we're on our way to the airport,
01:14:00it's the same three songs coming back.
01:14:02It's all that.
01:14:27It wasn't to be.
01:14:37But the fact that we got as far as we did,
01:14:41hand on heart,
01:14:42it didn't make it any easier when we lost the game.
01:14:45You know, we were watching the game last night
01:14:51and you feel a twinge of jealousy
01:14:55because those two teams are still going at it, you know.
01:14:57You see France celebrating at the end.
01:15:00That's where we wanted to be.
01:15:01And it's a compliment to our boys
01:15:04because, you know,
01:15:05they haven't just settled and thought,
01:15:06you know, we've got to the semi-final.
01:15:08You can still feel there's a disappointment
01:15:10and I quite like that.
01:15:25We go back to Dinard
01:15:27and we had sort of a day as a squad
01:15:28of just reflecting on stuff.
01:15:30So the flight home was quite quiet right.
01:15:32There's a few tired people on there.
01:15:33You start to try and understand, you know,
01:15:38well, actually, it probably wasn't just, you know,
01:15:40a few games that we played for Wales
01:15:41and we enjoyed it and we did well.
01:15:42It was a bit more at the time.
01:15:44I think, you know,
01:15:44it seems to be like it lifted the whole country.
01:15:48It's just the fact that we're known now.
01:15:50Being Welsh,
01:15:51sometimes you go somewhere in the world
01:15:52and people don't know where Wales is, you know,
01:15:54whereas from now on,
01:15:56those boys put Wales on the map.
01:16:03I think we all just realised
01:16:05how much it meant to everyone.
01:16:07We thought it was going to be a normal get-off.
01:16:09A few people might clap us and that,
01:16:10but obviously we're out of the Euros now.
01:16:12People might not be caring that much.
01:16:14They've got to get back to work
01:16:15or find another job
01:16:16because they've quit the other one.
01:16:18Years gone by,
01:16:19there'd probably be three, four people there,
01:16:22you know, achieving us out of the airport.
01:16:25This time we got off the plane.
01:16:26All the streets there,
01:16:28all lined with people.
01:16:29There was cars pulling over, waving.
01:16:32and I thought,
01:16:33God, this is fantastic, you know.
01:16:35Little did we know
01:16:36what was waiting in Cardiff.
01:16:40Like nothing you'd ever seen before as a player.
01:16:43It was almost like we'd won the competition,
01:16:45to be honest.
01:16:46It was an amazing, amazing feeling.
01:16:50We're a small country.
01:16:53You know,
01:16:53and I think unless you're from Wales,
01:16:55you don't sometimes get it
01:16:56and people were saying,
01:16:57was it the right thing to do?
01:16:59But this is a country
01:17:00that had never done this before.
01:17:02That was the first time
01:17:03when we experienced
01:17:04what it was like back at home.
01:17:05I don't know if anybody knew
01:17:07how many he was there,
01:17:07but it was,
01:17:08yeah, it was incredible.
01:17:10And I'm right at the front
01:17:11and I'm with Bailo
01:17:12and Rambo, actually.
01:17:13I think Ashley's on one side
01:17:14because he's got us there.
01:17:15And I said to Bailo,
01:17:16God, baby, you've never seen anything like this,
01:17:19mate, have you?
01:17:20He said,
01:17:21well, I've actually just seen it in Madrid.
01:17:23We just won the Champions League.
01:17:25So,
01:17:25I took a bit of water on my fire a bit,
01:17:28you know what I mean?
01:17:29To experience it with Wales
01:17:30was an amazing thing
01:17:32and I'm sure
01:17:33when everybody will remember
01:17:35for the rest of their lives.
01:17:37Everyone was just saying thank you
01:17:39and I was like,
01:17:39well, thanks for what?
01:17:40You know,
01:17:40we haven't,
01:17:41I don't understand what we've done.
01:17:43The homecoming,
01:17:44I think it was a bit of a,
01:17:45it wasn't a surprise,
01:17:46but it was just an amazing event
01:17:47to see so many people out
01:17:49and hearing all the stories
01:17:50and of everybody
01:17:51and go back again to the supporters,
01:17:53you know,
01:17:53the supporters who went up
01:17:54over March
01:17:54and then came back for five weeks.
01:17:56I know I'll always remember
01:17:57being a part of that
01:17:57and it's just nice
01:17:59to hear people's stories
01:18:00when they tell you
01:18:00like what it meant to them
01:18:01and, you know,
01:18:02how it inspired their family
01:18:04or whatever it might be.
01:18:05It was something I never thought
01:18:06would happen,
01:18:07especially for Welsh football
01:18:08when we were getting 3,000 fans
01:18:10down at Cardiff City Stadium
01:18:11watching games,
01:18:12so in a couple of years,
01:18:14short space of time,
01:18:14to see that reaction
01:18:15was really special
01:18:17and something,
01:18:18yeah,
01:18:18I'll never forget that.
01:18:27A quarter of a million people
01:18:29have come out onto the streets
01:18:30just to congratulate us.
01:18:33It's quite overwhelming.
01:18:37We went further
01:18:38than anyone probably ever expected,
01:18:39so it was just nice
01:18:40for us to be back in Cardiff
01:18:42and see all the fans,
01:18:43you know,
01:18:43wearing their shirts
01:18:44and all the kids
01:18:45and everyone just so happy with us.
01:18:46People who couldn't get over there
01:18:48had their chance
01:18:48to say thank you
01:18:50and I think more importantly
01:18:51for us to say thank you to them.
01:18:52I never ever thought
01:19:03we'd be in a position
01:19:04where we had the whole nation proud of us,
01:19:08you know.
01:19:08or any of us,
01:19:09than just a few people
01:19:24and we were in a position
01:19:26of the park,
01:19:27I don't know
01:19:27how we had the whole nation
01:19:28and I said it's a place
01:19:29to be all-ahead,
01:19:29but I can't wait and see them
01:19:30in a position in a room
01:19:31for us.
01:19:31I know we're in a position
01:19:32and I've got people
01:19:32to be in a position
01:19:33for us,
01:19:33and I think that we're in a place
01:19:34that we may have the highest
01:19:35that we have the highest
01:19:36to have the highest
01:19:36that we have the highest
