00:00There are three less scammers on the streets of Manila and elsewhere to worry about thanks to the latest arrest of three Chinese nationals dealing fly-by-night gadgets and other lemon-quality merchandise that our Ryan Lesiga sums up in this report.
00:17Six individuals, including three Chinese nationals, were caught in the act, transacting the sale of cell phones that allegedly had no clearance from the Department of Trade and Industry, or DTI, and the National Telecommunications Commission, or NTC.
00:30In addition to locking permits, the gadgets are also said to be substandard.
00:34After receiving a tip, operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, or CIDG, immediately raided this building in Binondo, Manila, which was allegedly being used as a warehouse and selling area for illegal cell phones.
00:49Boxes of substandard gadgets were seized by CIDG operatives.
00:53The gadgets confiscated by authorities were worth an estimated 3.5 million pesos.
00:58Among those arrested was the individual allegedly running the illegal operation.
01:02Naka-display sa warehouse nila.
01:0680 times siya pibili ka, magsabi ka lang, nandun sa ka nila.
01:10Baka mas marami pang iba na mayroon lang sa paligin natin.
01:15CIDG Director of Police Brigadier General Romeo Macapas emphasized that many customers are enticed because the cell phones are being sold at a much lower price compared to those in malls.
01:25But the PNP warned that using gadgets and other electronic devices that have not undergone proper quality checks is extremely dangerous.
01:33Siyempre, pag nakita natin ang isang unit na substandard, maraming hazards yun.
01:40Siyempre, sa health natin, sa safety natin, maraming issue yun sir pag hindi siya, wala siya sa substandard.
01:48Authorities are still determining where the suspects were sourcing their supply and how the alleged substandard smartphones and tablets were being distributed to the market.
01:58The suspect will face charges for violations of the Public Telecommunications Policy Act and the Consumer Act.
02:04Ryan Lisigues, from the National TV Network, for a new and better Philippines, Kam Krameng.
