Tobi and BMitch are in disbelief about PFF ranking the Commanders secondary unit towards the bottom of the league.

00:00list season by the way um just getting uh closer and closer to training camp still
00:05a couple of days away from that i believe a week from now you'll have the commanders rookies
00:09reporting and then the veterans will report four days later but it's kind of list season right now
00:15just leading up until training camp and so pff has been grading some of the units around the
00:20national football league and we talked about the offensive line earlier this week now taking a look
00:25at the secondary all right i think when you look at the commander secondary i think the
00:31cornerback room is intriguing because so much of it is going to ride on how marshawn latimore plays
00:39this year yeah and if he comes out and plays well then you could have a pretty good secondary if he
00:45plays poorly then i think you can still have a decent secondary but you're missing still that
00:50top flight guy and maybe sammer still has to go back outside so you're looking at a secondary right
00:55now comprised of mikey sammer still marshawn latimore trey amos uh noah igbenagany um at safety you've
01:04got quan martin will harris percy butler um i guess jonathan jones is the name i forgot to throw in
01:11there at corner as well so i i don't know that it's a great unit i think it's improved from last year
01:17where do you think that pro football focus has the commanders ranked going into this season
01:25because they they're looking at a lot of what was last year and then they're looking at new
01:31additions marshawn did not play well last year because he was injured i'm thinking they're going
01:37to go anywhere from 12 to 20 all right so we'll start at the bottom of the this list and see when
01:43we get to the commanders so at 32 they have the las vegas raiders i don't even know anybody in their
01:51secondary aside from jeremy chin so it makes sense at 31 by the way i find this one funny
01:56at 31 they have the dallas cowboys remember when it wasn't that long ago when we spent all this time
02:02talking about deron bland and trayvon diggs yeah they ranked at 31 they rank at 31 now wow 30
02:08carolina panthers this one's interesting because jc horn i think is one of the better
02:13dbs in the league maybe the only person maybe the only one in the secondary they signed trayvon
02:18marig as well but yeah i mean there's not a lot of guys the thing about secondary is just because
02:22you got one dude doesn't really mean a lot 29 is the miami dolphins they just traded away jalen
02:28ramsey and the guys behind them are like cater co who uh already burns i guess you did get minka
02:35fitzpatrick so you still feel good about that but there's not a lot there coming in at 28 b mitch
02:42washington commanders 28 28 i don't think it's a 28 burst i don't buy that i think mikey tray
02:51we still got where i'm more sure i'm gonna play better i think uh even agony uh nah that's not a
02:5928 rank so i think if you throw in the safeties with this there's an uncertainty at the strong
03:04safety position i'd say because you feel good about kwan martin as a free safety um i wouldn't say
03:10he's top flight but he gives you i would say average to above average play there so that's fine
03:14the corner room i do think is better than it was last year and even if latimore doesn't get back to
03:22a pro bowl level if he can just get to a serviceable level then you've got him i think amos is going to
03:30step in remember we talked to nikki javala a couple of weeks ago we were out at the facility and she had
03:35brought up that she thinks he ends up starting week one if that's the case and i think trey amos is
03:39gonna hit the ground running and he's gonna get better and better as the season goes on i think
03:43he can be an effective corner but he's kind of a wild card you don't really know what you're gonna
03:47get in a rookie season sandra still if he's back in the slot i think he's an absolute demon i think
03:53he's good on the outside but i think he can be an absolute game wrecker inside in the nickel
03:58so i don't know that i agree with them being at 28 i think in that range like you were saying i
04:04wouldn't say that they're going to be in the top half of the league but if they bumped them up
04:08eight to ten spots and they're somewhere around 18 to 20 i think that would be mean a little make a
04:14little more sense yeah i mean you look at last year they weren't awful against the pass well they
04:21were awful against the runs that played into a little bit i mentioned that but they weren't awful
04:27against the pass so when you look at some of the teams that are ahead of them minnesota is at 27 which
04:33by the way is a little bit shocking to me because they had such a good defense last year i don't know
04:37why they're at 27 because they they depend a lot on their secondary because they asked them to do a
04:42lot of unique things like they you know they're running all sorts of different coverages that you
04:47don't see anyone else really sort of run so i don't know if i agree with that 26 is the cardinals
04:53um they drafted will johnson the the rookie out of michigan that had some injury concerns but
04:59they still got buda baker over there cincinnati's at 25 the giants are at 24 um just a couple more
05:0723 is san francisco 22 is tampa bay but i don't know that i fully agree with them being ranked all
05:15the way down there no i don't buy it but do you have concerns with their secondary going into the
05:20season so something that i think that they did this offseason which i'd be interested to see i don't
05:25know that they've released their defensive line rankings um i'd be curious to know where they
05:30would have washington ranked in the defensive line rankings because part of the reason that i think
05:34that this secondary is better is they looked at it and said the way that we're going to improve this
05:39team is we're not going to necessarily go spend big on a pass rusher like a trey hendrickson and trade
05:45for him or assign a big time guy like a milton williams but we're going to get bigger up front which they
05:51did and we're going to prove on the back end so that we can trust our guys in coverage a little
05:55bit more and not feel like we have to help them out as much and that can help us in the run game
05:59totally i believe that's what it is because when you look at their production against the run last
06:06year you're nothing to be the right home about no if they can be better against the run that defense
06:15is going to drastically become better i know like pff a lot of their stuff is is like oh they got names
06:25too they see names and they rank people based off of names a lot of times and there are some guys
06:31that going to have names or they came from certain schools and they may not produce your team doesn't
06:38have to be great it just has to if they can limit the explosives they'll be great
06:45that defensive secondary will be totally better but you can't be having those games where you're
06:51giving up two and three big big bombs well you just allow people have to work it down the field
06:57when a team has the ability when they feel like they can just constantly run the football it's like
07:02having an easy button on offense right when you just feel like you can always rely on the fact that
07:07i'm just going to hand it off and i'm going to get six yards five and six yards then you don't have
07:12to feel as i don't you don't have to be as perfect offensively because then you can you know if you
07:18don't get something on first and ten you throw it down the field you don't get anything all right
07:22well i can hand it off and get to third and five i can get to third and four by handing the ball off
07:26so not being able to stop the run it's funny how as time goes on and everyone likes to talk about
07:33how the game evolves and things change it's still about running the football and stopping the run
07:39totally totally because if you can run the ball you stress the hell out of a defense
07:45if you can stop a run you stress the hell out of an offense yeah because what happens as you begin
07:53to get closer at the backs of the defender gets closer to the goal line they gotta now take chances
08:01take risk and that's where big plays come from so if you just throw the ball all the time
08:08you're gonna be the one having problem because instead of going third and short you're third
08:15and long teams can really dial it up and come at you because everybody know about the amount of time
08:21before you have to let the ball go and they begin to do that but if you can run the ball you get that
08:25thing to third and short and like washington was last year fourth and short where they put jade in a
08:31position he can run it he can hand it to somebody or he can throw it you can't make the right decision
08:38when he would come out on the edge you would see those defensive backs you can see that the heads
08:42were spinning if they step up he dropped it right over the head if they went back he ran and got the
08:47first down it just so it it stresses you out once you can run the game run the ball and i think they
08:54need to improve it this year and they also need to improve against the run how well do you think
08:59will harris is going to step in and take jeremy chin's role i think i think will harris
09:04he hits he's a he's a he likes to thump but i i believe like he loses size from chin but maybe
09:15he's a little quicker yeah maybe he could cover a little better yeah because you know that's all
09:20that that wasn't a great coverage guy yeah so so when you lose a guy you look at his size
09:25you know jay always go oh man chin was huge okay but i need you to be huge and also be
09:34legitimately a great cover guy because that's where he got in trouble when it came to coverage
09:40against tight end well that's also going to be a big thing too this is where the linebackers have
09:44to step up because you do lose some of that size at safety yeah quan martin's not a big guy will
09:48harris isn't a big guy now i don't know that you would say that will harris isn't a good tackler so
09:52that maybe is a little bit of a moot point just because you can hit hard either way if you just
09:56get the guy to the ground that's really all i can i don't care how you hit him but i want well i do
10:01look at how you hit him because i tell you this when people came across the middle and sean taylor
10:05was lurking they uh put their eyes on sean more than they did in the football they don't have a
10:09sean taylor on this team right now but i think it does talk about the importance of the linebacker
10:13position as well you got to make sure that when you have an opportunity whether it's bobby wagner
10:17frankie louvu one of the other guys having to step in mcgee madrano um dominie hampton that guy
10:23right there may end up being a secret weapon k madrano former wide receiver can run four four
10:30if he can be fit into your defense as a linebacker or that big nickel what they call it where that safety
10:42comes down what if he can he's fast enough if he can get if he has the ability to run with those
10:49tight ends and all he might be a guy to do a lot of things for you this year which by the way is why
10:53i like this draft class because we've talked about all of their day three picks jalen lane yeah
10:59game madrano jacori krosky merit and every one of those guys maybe they're just nothing maybe it's
11:05just a day three pick that they have to develop but every one of them when you talk about like man
11:09they got some potential and they can really really help out they have stuff that makes you excited
11:13about what their what their capabilities or possibilities could be
