00:00In 1933, after the production of science fiction was discontinued with its fifth issue,

00:06Siegel and Shuster would go on to create The Superman, a story in the then-new comic book

00:11format. However, it ended up being rejected by publishers and was almost entirely destroyed by

00:19a frustrated Schuster. This second version of the character was also human but, unlike their

00:24previous creation, had traits of a hero. The character in The Superman had no superpowers

00:30and was conceived as a typical pulp genre adventurer, a human without superpowers.

00:36Interestingly, Siegel's father died of a heart attack in 1932 during a robbery at the family's

00:42clothing store. Because of this, Siegel included in those early drafts a scene where Superman saves

00:48a man held at gunpoint someone who strongly resembled his father. Superman's appearance

00:53was inspired by Siegel himself, as if he were imagining himself as a hero capable of saving

00:59his own father.
