00:00Hey, it's Joe from V-Cam TV Studios, and guess what? Today's episode of Radio DJ Reacts with JR,
00:07some would call All That and a Bag of Chips. I wouldn't have called it that, and I don't think
00:13he would either, but some might. So what we're going to do here today is start off with one of
00:18Jeff's personal favorite shows. It's 90210, and Donna Martin, she's going to graduate. Oh, sorry,
00:27it's not that episode. Donna Martin isn't going to graduate, she's just going to become a radio
00:33disc jockey. And now I'd like to introduce my temporary replacement. Look out, Howard Stern,
00:45here's Donna Martin. Hot Donna. Watch out, Howard. Good morning, West Beverly. This is Donna. You
00:54just said who you were. Come on, keep going. You got this. Call 911. She's dying. Dang it.
01:04Donna, you gotta talk louder. This is Donna. Donna, coming to you from... Where am I? Oh, no.
01:17I can't do this, David. Donna, forget about them, okay? It's just the two of us in here. Just forget
01:24about them. Good advice. Come on. Better hair. Good advice, better hair. I'm coming to you from a room,
01:31which I'm sharing with David Silver, my very understanding coach. He'll be on vacation for a
01:41while, doing the study thing, getting ready for an early graduation. And won't he look good this June
01:47in his cap and gown? Yes. Okay, well, now we're ready for... That's a sick jacket she has on with
01:54all the CDs, though. Wow. I'm kind of envious of that. She is super nervous right now, isn't she?
02:03What would you do if she walked in this nervous? How would you coach her? What would you do to
02:09bring her back down to earth? Well, you know what the perfect example of that is? Howard Stern's
02:15private parts. The scene where he's hyping up this, like, sporting goods store. And this scene
02:21has always stuck out to me. It's always been with me all of these years. New sponsor, Stanley Sport
02:26is a great place to go. And he's talking about how great the place is and how he used to go there
02:34with his dad and they'd get so many things and they'd spend such little money. There's only one
02:39Stanley Sports and the grand opening is this weekend. Mark it on your calendar. And it was at
02:45that moment where he started actually admitting that he just got caught in a lie, just got caught
02:50in a fib. And he admitted to the audience that he had messed up. And he promised him that he wasn't
02:57going to do that again. And he kind of broke down the third wall, so to speak. And was kind of like,
03:02look, I'm a radio jock. I'm only getting paid XYZ a day. I'm trying to earn a living. I got a wife
03:09I'm trying to take care of. And it was those personal aspects and those maybe shortcomings
03:16is the word that made him more human and made him more relatable. I'm a disc jockey who makes $250 a
03:23week. And I just want to do the right thing here on the air. I don't want to get fired. So I guess I
03:27lie to you. But I'll never let that happen again. You know what I mean? And that seems to be a theme
03:33that we keep seeing over and over again, throughout all these different scenarios and show clips.
03:38All right, you can't tell me you don't want to own one of these CD jackets.
03:42Now that was a sick jacket. Where does the makeup go? You know, you put it on in the morning.
03:48An hour later, it's gone across the country. There must be like tons of cosmetics just vanishing
03:53in high schools without a trace. Where does it all go? The answers to this and many other puzzling
03:59questions of the universe coming up. I think he jumped in prematurely. I think she may have been
04:03onto something there. I think it took her being scared, being nervous to really find what kind of
04:10made her tick. And I think, I don't know, I think she could have been onto something there.
04:14Our next clip, and try not to get too excited. I know this is one of your shows,
04:19as it is mine, but it's saved by the bell. And I just want to get your opinion on the big bopper.
04:27Mr. Belden, when he was younger.
04:31Oh, heck yeah.
04:34Oh, wow. It wasn't that a happening tune. I'm the big bopper. You beautiful people are
04:39grooving to KKTY, the most out of sight station in the nation. Can you dig in?
04:45KKTY, Tiger. Now groove to this groove.
04:53He's got his operations down, that's for sure.
04:56This is the principal. Report to my office immediately.
05:00Man, what does that jerk want now?
05:06Mr. Belden is the big bopper is tremendous. It's super stereotypical. It's very tongue in
05:13cheek. It's very, you know, phony radio guy.
05:17Now at 9.30 tonight, a special Beatles segment that we have every Saturday. The Beatles will
05:21share the spotlight with the Dave Clark Five. Here's, I think, one of the most typical ones
05:24by the Beatles. Guys and gals, dig.
05:26So would you say that Belden's radio game was on point?
05:30Hey, he was on the board. He had his mechanics down. He was moving around. He was, you know,
05:34hitting his sounds, hitting his tracks. And I just thought he was super cool. Like,
05:39he wasn't cool at all, but that's what made him cool to me.
05:41You know what's kind of strange with these clips? Alright, so you have, like, Family Ties
05:47in the 80s episode where their jingle sounded like the 50s. In this one, Mr. Belden plays
05:54a jingle that's very 50s sounding.
05:57Right.
05:57Yet, these shows take place in the 90s. The clip from the 90s is portraying the 60s. The
06:06Family Ties one takes place in the 80s. And yet, everything has this kind of 50s-ness
06:11to it.
06:12Alright, it's almost like, it's K-D-A-D-D-D, kind of thing.
06:16Yeah.
06:17Oh, and then we got my hero, Zach Morris.
06:21Good morning, Bayside. Hey, and all you kids cutting school in the Palisades and at the
06:27beach, this is Wolfman Zach.
06:29hey it's bayside's freshest hottest hippest news station kkty fm tiger radio
06:39so how did zach morris do on the air gosh i don't know zach was kind of middle of the road
06:46i think just using the name zach morris on the air is super cool uh i didn't necessarily think
06:53he needed to be wolfman zach maybe for like a fun halloween episode like a halloween broadcast
06:58um but yeah he was kind of middle of the road and you think he would have done a lot better being
07:04like the captain of charisma that i remember him to be now that they've found kkty bayside
07:10the whole crew decide to become radio jocks bad food hits bayside students hit bathrooms
07:17this is jesse spano for kkty news i caught up with mr balding running out of the cafeteria today
07:23and he assured me that green meat would no longer oh gosh you gotta have your news you gotta have
07:29your traffic you wanna know that's none of your business flash debbie de marco's new curves came
07:34with debbie's new sweater you know i kind of think that if lisa turtle was going around spreading this
07:41kind of gossip she'd be written up hello this is kelly desire it's evening the candles are lit
07:48kelly desire all that's missing is that special romantic song kelly's painting the picture she's
07:56been the best so far that song did not match with the vibe she was going for
08:01breeze outside the old victorian house there was a scream evelyn's heart pounded
08:10as she slowly opened the bedroom door
08:15she saw that and recognized the face of
08:21well that's all the time we have today tune in tomorrow for another exciting installment of
08:27screeches mystery theater talk about a cliffhanger sports fans because on deck it's tiger radio
08:34sportiest reporter ac slater all right jr i don't think you're ready for the amount of fire that ac
08:42slater is about to bring to the mic okay first things first let's check out the old scoreboard
08:50huh i mean hey it's funny how this guy's really become a host and a broadcaster here he's let's
08:55save by the bell anyway in local high school action it was it was bayside five valley four
09:05i guess that means we won right math majors oh come on yeah this is classic save by the bell
09:14poor ac slater he thinks he's good but nah man he he does not have it as a presenter
09:21have you ever run into this situation where somebody thinks they're really good on the air
09:27but they really don't have it in fact they actively drive away people from listening
09:33you know i don't know that i've ever come across somebody that thought they were much more natural
09:38on the mic than they really were i think it's all tough you know public speaking is tough um
09:45it's actually i'm more comfortable being on a stage in front of hundreds of people than i am
09:50just being on a mic talking to you right here right now but if i were to coach ac i would try to
09:56i would try to tell him to lead with his headline right i always look at every on-air break and this is
10:03what i try to tell uh you know a lot of the students that i've worked with like at the colorado
10:09media school for example is lead lead with your hook and and every break you do even if it's a
10:15talking segment like ac's was which is pretty drawn out i would want him to condense that down as much
10:21as he could right you don't need to be talking just to be talking but lead with your hook get to the
10:26meat of the matter right what's what's going on and what are you talking about and then the third is
10:32going to be your call to action what are you asking the listeners to do so your hook your meat of the
10:38matter your call to action think about what those are before you even crack the mic that's what i
10:43would try to work out with him but of course mario's gone on to have a much better hosting career
10:49than i have so far so much respect to him so when you're watching one of those mario lopez christmas
10:55movies or you catch him in one of his million hosting gigs you've never seen the horn get busted
11:01out have you i have not no uh that's something that i've i've never done myself none of the kids
11:07college did no but i've always been really big into sound effects and you know having those loaded
11:14into your system into your your hot bar whether it's touchscreen or you know whatever just because
11:19they can kind of help enhance your storytelling this is ac slater and just remember fans in the
11:27airport of life sports is just a baggage you always gotta have a sign off i want to talk about that for
11:36sure you're always gonna have a sign off right so what do you think he was the worst
11:43we're thinking about it it's not happy i told you i was good no hey guys i think i know it helps
11:52later what a muzzle yeah and ac slater definitely the worst out of the butts that's for sure i thought
12:02kelly did well i thought screech did well with his voices and his like sound effects um but the one
12:08thing ac slater did well is he had a sign off my sign off my whole career has been remember it's cool
12:16to be you remember it's cool to be you peace and that's me trying to encourage people to understand
12:23that it's okay to be themselves you know and it's cool for you to be you and be into the things that
12:28you're into um that was the only thing ac slater did well the rest of it was just woof they got a
12:35lot of anchors on kkty bayside where on the programming block would you place each one of
12:42these personalities radio you have your morning show day part you have your midday day part you
12:48have your afternoon drive day part which is my most recent experience and then you have your night show
12:53i've certainly done my fair share of nights and then you have your overnights and i've done those as
12:57well too i would have split them up all into different times throughout the day but of course
13:02this is only active you know the block that that time that they're in school so who's going where
13:09gosh i i'm gonna probably try to try to put slater in the late late grave shift because he was just
13:17the worst probably put screech on at night because of his stories i'd probably put kelly uh for your
13:25afternoon show as far as middays go i think maybe i tried to team up lisa and zach try to get something
13:33out of them and then in in the morning time uh probably probably jesse our next clip comes from
13:42married with children now remember we're going to be giving away free limo service to this friday's
13:46spring formal to the student with the most pathetic reason for wanting it here it is you're on the air
13:53yeah this is bud bundy and i'm trying to bud bundy we have our winner oh no poor bud
14:01so as you can see they're kind of more talk radio now remember to tune in saturday for our
14:10informative interview with tremaine's new dean of students informative hell it's going to be pure
14:14sleaze we've dug up enough dirt on this mystery man to make a luau pit friend and a cole smith
14:19what's the biggest difference between talk radio and being a disc jockey well the difference is is
14:27clear uh working in top 40 the last 10 years we're basically talking as long as the ramp allows us
14:34to and that's typically anywhere from zero seconds to maybe 15 20 seconds if you get a good ramp uh
14:43and obviously we can talk into stop sets and stuff for up to a minute at a time um but talk radio you
14:50have no music to lean on you're basically leaning on a conversation and your your style goes from you
15:00know when when you're talking up songs and you're jocking you're you're you know obviously talking to
15:04one person but when you're doing like a three or two person show like this your approach is more the
15:10audience is kind of a fly on the wall and they get to kind of hear you know and hear the conversation
15:16that's taking place and then chime in with their perspective via the phone or social media this is
15:22oliver and mark live with dean rhodes what up collegians what up no so tell me dean
15:30how does it feel to be so powerful and yet so damn good looking did you write these feels good
15:39feels damn good have you ever run into this situation they'll come in with pre-prepared
15:46questions and you're not allowed to go off the script it's a loaded one and without going too far
15:54and getting myself in trouble i will tell you that there have been certain acts and certain artists
16:00some of which you listen to regularly that i would obviously have to submit any conversation pieces
16:08and questions ahead of time and i've had certain ones that have gotten nixed and i've been told no
16:13you cannot bring that up so your job as a professional is to keep things very light keep
16:21things very surfacy you know people aren't necessarily there for a deep dive when you're
16:27talking to their favorite artist every artist every band has a certain agenda certain things they're
16:33trying to push prod and get over and it's it's up to you as the host to interweave all of those
16:41things while carrying the conversation i'm 21 years old and i've only had sex four times
16:46okay come on man you told me you've been involved with hundreds of women but they weren't real
16:51oh gosh lee important to me like you are uh mr bud hey you'll get your shot hoop dreams
17:01april please choose me i'm tired of sitting home saturday nights moaning in two different voices so
17:08my sister won't tease me oh gosh i'm stealing that what is it we're on the air oh no it's for bud not
17:19to know that he was on the air i thought that was great because he was being his authentic self
17:25it was very funny obviously at his expense um and he wasn't meaning for it to be but it was good
17:31radio that made for good you know that was a good something to listen to i think this is one of the
17:37first times i'm seeing signage so can you explain to people at home who've never been in one of these
17:43booths what's the proper etiquette uh what does the on-air sign mean how do you handle that and how
17:50does somebody know when to come in and when not to come in as far as studio and and booth etiquette in
17:56the on-air light one of the rules we have whenever you're in the studio uh regardless of if your mic is
18:04on or not you never use the f-word because god forbid you forget to turn off your microphone
18:11and you let out a big f-word over the air the fcc comes crawling after you you're in a lot of trouble
18:18and the jock is going to get fined the station is going to get fined and the station could lose its
18:23actual license if something like that were to get reported and captured um but as far as etiquette
18:30without getting into it too much i've always been a believer in you leave the studio the way you
18:36found it next uh yeah my name's jill and i think you should choose bud heck yeah let's go bud
18:43i'm rooting for him yeah thank you you're on hot talk yeah hi my name is kelly bundy and i think you
18:53should choose nikolai oh kelly come on your own brother what would you say the benefit is
19:00of having a good co-host you know carrying a conversation by yourself is only going to go
19:06so far even if you introduce multiple callers as multiple different you know quote unquote co-hosts
19:13for your show it's still just you in there uh you know kind of coming up with this all on your own
19:18it's only one perspective but when you can have two three maybe even four chairs in there just the
19:25conversation with the different perspectives on things is what is really going to resonate with
19:30audiences this is mark campbell this is oliver cole and this is april adams tune in tomorrow when
19:36we'll make surprise phone calls to wives of professors who sleep with students what all right
19:43now this is getting juicy here we have arrived
19:48you get two bros in there and they're just broing out and it's just two guys perspectives but then you
19:59can throw this woman into the mix with hers and it's going to be able to relate with women and men are
20:06going to it's just that old thing the men are going to want to be with her and the women are going to
20:10want to be her our next clip is from a show called news radio and i don't know if you know this guy
20:16but his name's joe rogan and he's gonna step in to host his very first show look joe i'm sorry i
20:25can't let you do this it's okay man i don't care all right great but you got to get somebody in here
20:29because you're back in the air in 15 seconds right bill just went to the break room you gotta get
20:34some i can cover it man it's no big deal you sure you know what you're doing yeah i just got one
20:37question what does this mean you're listening to winix what's that that's wnyx joe i'm kidding
20:43pd's all nervous wnyx news time 10 21 you know this joe guy he might have a career in radio don't
20:53you think no i kind of feel like that was the unofficial like yeah that was like the the trailer
20:59to what the joe rogan experience would become now he just needs to talk for another three hours
21:05right see and that's where i have so much respect for joe and and what he does it's coming down to
21:12to you know conversations right and joe his show obviously is the listener is the fly on the wall
21:18approach where they get to kind of you know hear this conversation that you know sometimes maybe
21:24they shouldn't be hearing right it can be a little risque and controversial especially with the show
21:28which is kind of the whole element behind it joe's just great he's world class at what he does um and i
21:35i i respect it a lot the cold front is expected to reach the city by morning with temperatures dropping
21:41to the low 20s i hate to put you on the spot but what's causing that cold front joseph well if it's
21:46anything like most cold fronts a low pressure system sitting off the coast is causing cold
21:50air to move down he keeps he's trying to he's trying to slip them up interesting well uh what's
21:55new in washington joe oh he can't read now news report here but if memory serves correct the story
22:04was on capitol hill today senator patrick morihan's plan for a fully funded penn station died in committee
22:10today the bill would have moved the train station across the street to the historic post office
22:13building wnyx news time 12 21 have you ever tried to do the news and i don't mean hewy lewis well i've
22:21never done news before um but it seems like it i don't know i've never experienced it so it's hard
22:28for me to say but i imagine it was very much like what joe just did in this clip it was kind of just
22:36read the news deliver the news rather than you know the personality's actual take what their actual
22:42thoughts are it's more this is the news you're telling the listener kind of to make up in their
22:48mind what they think um but if the you know news talk person is good they'll have their own stance
22:54and their own views on this opinion because that's how conversations start
22:58what do you want uh thanks joe by the way what's the post office building built in 1908 the post
23:04office
23:04he can't he can't trip them up interchangeable machine made steel girders thanks joe i guess
23:12those two weeks in new york city tour guide school paid off after all yeah in the national news the
23:17congress is deadlocked once again on the issue of farm subsidies look i was just leaving middle of it
23:23next week i'm done with my part see ya tremendous tremendous now i understand
23:28the why joe rogan went on to be the biggest podcaster in the world make sure to like follow
23:34and subscribe all three if you're feeling up to it uh again my name is jr thank you so much
23:39for watching and remember it's cool to be you peace
