00:00:00Hey, it's Joe from VKMTV Studios, and in this retrospective miniseries, we're going to go over the craziest aspects of every wrestling video game that they've ever put out.

00:00:13I really can't imagine having the interest or the free time to do any of that.

00:00:16According to my research, the very first wrestling game ever put out was Tag Team Wrestling, released in 1983.

00:00:23It was a simple little wrestling game, so basic, so pure, nobody's getting blown up trying to make their ring entrance in this game.

00:00:36They're just wrestlers, wrestling.

00:00:39They didn't feel the need to try to be Mortal Kombat.

00:00:42They've attempted to be Mortal Kombat more than a few times, including WWE Brawl, which was an unreleased game for the 3DS.

00:00:53What? You don't want to hit a bear slam? Why is Big Show dressed like Glacier?

00:00:58And is this Hulk Hogan? Or Triple H?

00:01:02King Grundy, born on a heat Sunday, gonna wrestle a Raw Monday.

00:01:09But that wasn't enough for you people, was it?

00:01:12You had to keep pushing the boundaries.

00:01:14And now we have grandmas being punted.

00:01:17Candice Michelle casting magic spells that turn you into an Alundra Blaze lookalike.

00:01:29Jake Roberts has an army of snakes that he talks to.

00:02:22It's a dark, rainy night in Georgia.

00:02:25A delivery driver sees a figure in the road.

00:02:34Because Sting apparently has teleportation powers now.

00:02:37When you finish your story, you don't just win a belt.

00:02:44Like Twisted Metal, you almost get your wish fulfilled.

00:02:48Yokozuna didn't just become champion, but he also almost destroyed American society.

00:02:54There will be years of adversity. American productivity will disintegrate.

00:02:58Industries will collapse.

00:02:59The people will wallow in mindless depravity, mere shadows of their former selves.

00:03:04And Bam Bam Bigelow would destroy the lives of innocent fans.

00:03:08Which, surprisingly, isn't the only time that murder and professional wrestling go hand-in-hand in these games.

00:03:15Oh, you're threatening me now?

00:03:16He raised his hands, and without warning, came a blast of flames, which engulfed the entire stadium.

00:03:22The audience was charred to flakes.

00:03:24The stadium was reduced to pebbles, and the WDAF title belonged to Bam Bam Bigelow.

00:03:31Does that seem like wrestling to you?

00:03:32Well, it's what you can expect when Vincent Carey McMahon creates his own television station.

00:03:40Welcome to the landscape of television now that WWE owner Mr. McMahon controls all the networks.

00:03:47Now you can see his WWE superstars in all your favorite TV shows and commercials.

00:03:54And though the critics continue to protest, you can't argue with success.

00:03:58In this multi-part series, we'll go through the years of wrestling video games.

00:04:04From earlier games, where they just kind of focused on you winning match after match, to the earliest attempts of trying to have a storyline.

00:04:13All the way up to what you have nowadays with the 2K series.

00:04:16And with 40 years of wrestling games, things got really, really weird.

00:04:23Now we will engage in an epic battle, which will engulf the entire planet.

00:04:29Recreating things like Stone Cold's beer bath, but for a kid-friendly audience.

00:04:33A soda bath?

00:04:34Yeah, that ring's gonna forever be sticky.

00:04:36You're gonna need a lot of beer to fill these cans that Stone Cold's drinking from.

00:04:40Now, as the years progressed, the games got bigger in scope.

00:04:43You could fit more and more into these games.

00:04:46And really have some elaborate cutscenes.

00:04:48And who doesn't enjoy the old Ackie-style cutscene?

00:04:52You know, where they're shaking in anger.

00:04:54They're pointing non-stop.

00:04:56It's like an old martial arts dubbed movie.

00:04:59All this pantomime-ing.

00:05:01And the dialogue, well, doesn't matter which wrestler you choose.

00:05:06Clearly Kane does not talk this much.

00:05:10With every passing game, they got better at recreating just what it was to watch pro wrestling.

00:05:16It's not just fighting.

00:05:18Sometimes it's a love story.

00:05:19A silly sitcom.

00:05:21Or a superhero trying to prove his worthiness by competing in foot races?

00:05:26I would like to challenge the champion of ECW to a foot race.

00:05:30Typical wrestling stuff.

00:05:37We're even at the point in these wrestling games where they build in botches.

00:05:42So what has 30-plus years of wrestling video game storylines brought us?

00:05:48Wrestling games have provided us plenty of cool stories over the years.

00:05:53And why shouldn't they?

00:05:54This is the medium where you can actually have those fantasy matches.

00:05:57All those hurdles that prevented you from ever seeing Stone Cold face John Cena, they're not here.

00:06:05Mix and match your eras.

00:06:07Jimmy Hart could be your evil GM who opposes Stone Cold.

00:06:12Stone Cold Spinner!

00:06:13John Cena can play a heel.

00:06:16I'm going to bust the ball out of a chair, King.

00:06:19Hold on a second.

00:06:31But at least in this version, you also have the involvement of Jimmy Hart.

00:08:07Triple H has a goal of winning that 16th world title

00:08:10with The Miz and his cronies trying to do anything they can to stop that.

00:08:1516 times.

00:08:17Wow.

00:08:18You, sir, are awesome.

00:10:36that may have caused the back issues

00:10:37that he had later on in his career.

00:10:39Wrestling story modes have allowed you to see the world.

00:10:42Well, their version of the world.

00:10:44How have they interpreted Mexico?

00:11:41Mexico is a lawless wasteland.

00:11:44Listen, I got my start in Mexico,

00:11:45and I ended up wrestling

00:11:46in some pretty out-of-the-way places.

00:11:49Dark, dangerous places.

00:11:52Where most of your matches

00:11:53will take place in the middle of the city.

00:11:54They'll even bring their animals to ringside.

00:11:58Wow.

00:11:58This place is a piece of work.

00:12:00What's with the chickens?

00:12:02Or just let the chickens wander.

00:12:04Yeah, it's no wonder that Daniel Bryant was like,

00:12:08I ain't trying to compete down there.

00:12:10So, unless you get a chance to wrestle

00:12:12for the top Mexican promotions,

00:12:14you're constantly risking death in a sketchy indie.

00:12:17TNA's game has your character woken up by doctors

00:12:20who are doing pro bono work down in Mexico.

00:12:24Your character has no idea who he is,

00:12:26only that he's a wrestler.

00:12:28Ah, I hate this pro bono carrapola.

00:12:32Shh, stop it, estupido.

00:12:34And if he's the victor in this gauntlet match,

00:12:36he's gonna win himself a trip back to America.

00:12:39But not through airfare.

00:12:41No, they're gonna smuggle you across the border.

00:12:45Not exactly a regal way

00:12:47for the king of the gauntlet to travel,

00:12:49but it's better than nothing.

00:12:51I'll take a free trip to the states any day.

00:13:01Is Japan treated any better?

00:13:03Ah, I'd argue yes.

00:13:06Since 2K got the license to these games,

00:13:08a lot of story modes have your character

00:13:11going off to wrestle in Japan.

00:13:13Even Legends of Wrestling understands

00:13:15just how important Japanese wrestling is,

00:13:17which is why you're able to have Hulk Hogan

00:13:19face off against Stan Hansen.

00:13:21And if your character was fired,

00:13:24quit, or becoming a big indie star,

00:13:27this would be the place that you'd wrestle at.

00:13:29An up-and-coming promotion in Japan

00:13:31wants you to go wrestle for them.

00:13:33I'm content to take my leave

00:13:35as Japan is one of the few places

00:13:37I can find live nutrition

00:13:39without being harassed

00:13:42by some sort of animal rights enforcement.

00:13:44Yeah, I'm a little surprised

00:13:46that the WWE is respectful

00:13:48of the Japanese wrestling scene.

00:13:50You want to earn the respect

00:13:52of the Japanese fans

00:13:53and show them you have fighting spirit?

00:13:55I'm not taking any shortcuts,

00:13:57and I'm certainly not going to risk

00:13:58disrespecting the Japanese fans.

00:14:39The winners of the two groups

00:14:40face each other

00:14:41at the Japan Dome

00:14:42to determine the tournament champion.

00:14:44Some of these people

00:14:47they try to keep it authentic.

00:14:49So when you talk about

00:14:50going to wrestle in Japan,

00:14:52they're gonna bring up things like

00:15:10He dresses like Dave Taylor

00:15:11and talks like Michael Caine.
