Amid the anti-semitism recommendations, some Jewish groups has labelled the plan 'dangerous'

00:00we fully support any efforts that would really combat antisemitism and we 100% agree that it

00:09does need to be pushed to the margins of society but yeah the dangerous element really is in sort

00:17of locating the problem in the wrong spot and proposing sort of increased surveillance

00:23withdrawal of funding which is straight out of the Trump playbook that's exactly what we

00:29seen at say Columbia University where Trump and other universities in the US where Trump has said

00:38you're not acting on antisemitism your funding is gone so it becomes this real way of cracking down

00:45on political dissent and cracking down on protest movement and we actually think that that's a

00:51really dangerous way to put it because there are many Jews in Australia including in the Jewish

00:58Council of Australia who have been active parts of the protest movement this is a movement that is

01:04against the genocide ongoing in Gaza and is a completely legitimate part of democratic political

01:13activity and to suggest that somehow this is related to antisemitism really does a disservice

01:20to the cause of fighting antisemitism so there's some elements of the reports of the report that

01:26are reasonable particularly where they're talking about online hate but overall the tenor of this

01:32report we do think is dangerous because of mislocating what the problem of antisemitism is and

01:38it hasn't been formed by wide consultation within the Jewish community Jewish Council of Australia was not

01:47consulted and other groups like us who do take a position in favour of Palestinian human rights have not been

01:53consulted so we think that this is a real missed opportunity and we think that special envoy should

01:59not be representing herself and this report as representing the opinion of all Jews in Australia
