00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown.
00:34In this day and age, you've got a deluge of choices on the telly.
00:37So thank you very much for choosing us.
00:39Hi, Rachel.
00:40Hi, Colin.
00:41Right, I've got a question for you.
00:43Kick off today.
00:44What do all of these programmes have in common?
00:47Mastermind, The Chase, Tipping Point, Pointless,
00:52Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, 15 to 1, House of Games.
00:56I could continue.
00:57There are more, but that's enough that should give you the answer.
01:00They're all TV game shows.
01:02No, you've been on them all.
01:04You, madam, are a quiz show junkie.
01:07I've been on probably a few more than that.
01:08I've been on one with Russell.
01:10Yeah.
01:10Did we win?
01:11We did.
01:12What were we doing?
01:13Something with Davina.
01:14Oh, yeah, yeah, we smashed that.
01:15What is your best and worst memory of all those quiz shows you've been on?
01:23Oh, well, winning all that money for charity.
01:26I've got a really brilliant charity, the Anglist Awesome Memorial Trust,
01:30who helped children in this country and other countries,
01:32and I've won tens of thousands of pounds for them.
01:35So that's got to be the best, isn't it?
01:36It's got to be top of the list.
01:37But I want to know about when you embarrassed yourself in any of those.
01:40Oh, loads of them.
01:42I think the worst one I did was Child Genius,
01:44where I had to try and remember pi to have many decimal places.
01:47And I was doing it, you know, when I was practising.
01:51I don't know how many I got to, 50, 60 or something.
01:54And then I ruined it in the first few, and that was that.
01:57We've all been there.
01:58We've all been there.
01:59No, we haven't.
02:00I've got a penny for every time that's happened to me.
02:03Well, Rich, just remember, there's only one goat of quiz shows,
02:07and it's right here, as you know, your home on Countdown.
02:11And listen, we can't question the loyalty of our G of the D,
02:16hurtling towards 5,000 Countdowns.
02:20Susie Dent is here, and back in Dictionary Corner,
02:22the brilliant Russell Cain.
02:27Right, let's get on to our champion.
02:29And what a champion.
02:30Shad just has the one win.
02:32But what a win.
02:33He beat our five-time champion, John Aziz, 110 to 111.
02:38Yesterday was epic.
02:40And, Shad, as the opening titles were rolling,
02:42you pointed something out to me, which is brilliant.
02:44Yeah, I was never in the lead in that game.
02:46Wow.
02:47You're the Dennis Taylor of Countdown.
02:49When he won the world title in 85,
02:51he didn't lead until the very last black.
02:53Oh, wow, didn't know that, and I'm a Snooper fan.
02:55It's a great...
02:56Well, you don't forget it if you're from Northern Ireland.
02:59Well, Shad, the only way is down.
03:00A lot of pressure on you,
03:01because it's one of the all-time greatest debuts on Countdown.
03:05Best of luck to you today.
03:07You've got Topple, sportsman, Ian Frazier.
03:10I know you're a Macam,
03:12and trips to Wembley for Sunderland.
03:14There's been many of them recently.
03:16Congratulations on that.
03:17But as we mentioned the snooker, my friend,
03:19you're a huge snooker fan,
03:20and you've had some amazing times with some very well-known names.
03:22Tell me about it.
03:23Absolutely, yeah.
03:24Well, at home, I've got what I've called a snooker wall.
03:28Wow.
03:28I'm pictured with all the greats to the game.
03:30Steve Davis from that fantastic 1985 final,
03:34two with Ronnie O'Sullivan.
03:35Yes.
03:35A personally signed picture with Judge Trump,
03:38who I actually had a charity auction frame with.
03:41Great to meet your heroes,
03:42and Judge, a lovely guy.
03:44Well, listen, forget snooker for now.
03:46Both of you.
03:47We're Countdown Loopy here.
03:48Good luck to both of you.

09:09Times that by two for 28.
09:12The other four times five is 20.

10:39I've got seven.
10:40OK, the six is?
10:41Usher's.
10:42Usher's.
10:43And Ian for your seven?
10:45Slusher.
10:46Slusher.
10:46Let's check it.
10:47With Susie Dent, the fingers have been ignited.
10:50Oh, I'm sorry.
10:52Slusher, but not slusher on its own.
10:54I'm sorry, Ian.
10:55Right, OK.
10:56So there you go.
10:57Big six points for Shad.
10:59Russell, come on.
11:00Enlighten me.
11:01I've got houses, and then we thought, but you can be rehoused.
11:04Yeah.
11:05So rehouses would be the present participle of that, is it?
11:09Yes, the third person singular.
11:11That's it, rehouses.
11:12There you go.
11:12One or the other.
11:13Either way, it's worth it.
11:17OK, let's get back to the game.
11:19Shad, it's your letters.
11:21May I have a consonant?
11:23Thank you, Shad.
11:24Q.
11:26And another one?
11:28S.
11:29And a third?
11:30D.

11:35And another one?
11:37U.
11:37And a third?
11:39O.
11:40And a consonant?
11:43T.
11:44And another consonant?
11:46G.
11:47And we'll finish off with a consonant.
11:49And finish with L.
11:51Here we go.
11:51Here we go.
11:51Bete,
11:53D.
11:53Пока.
11:53I'm so glad there is.
12:01I'm so glad there is.
12:02I'm so glad you're doing this.
12:04I'm so glad you're doing this.
12:05I'm so glad there is.
12:05Penstein, Shad?
12:23A six.
12:24And Ian?
12:25Six.
12:25Ian, what's your word?
12:27Gloats.
12:27Yeah, and no gloating here,
12:29cos Shad will have exactly the same.
12:32Me three, I'm guessing you four and five
12:34in dictionary corner, gloats.
12:36No, I came to this one with an unassist, quotas.
12:41Quotas.
12:42All right, let's move back to the numbers.
12:44Ian, it's your choice.
12:45Can I have two large and four small, please, Rachel?
12:48You can indeed.
12:48Thank you, Ian.
12:49Two biggies, four not.
12:51And the next numbers challenge is eight,
12:53one, two, six, 75 and 25.
12:58And the target to reach 318.
13:02Numbers up.
13:04318 with two.
13:34Beg, Shad?
13:35318.
13:36Right, bang on the button.
13:38Ian?
13:38319.
13:39Oh, it can be costly, Shad.
13:41Off you go.
13:42Six minus two equals four.
13:44Yep.
13:44Four times 75 equals 300.
13:47It does.
13:47300 at 25 equals 325.
13:50And then we add the one and take off the eight.
13:52Perfect.
13:52Very well done.
13:53318.
13:5410 points for the champion in the lead,
13:58which is nosebleed territory for you after your first win.
14:02But you can take a little break and bask in the glory
14:04as we have another chat with Russell Kane,
14:06making his debut on Dictionary Corner this week.
14:09This has been a delight.
14:10Now, there are deluge of podcasts out there.
14:13Yours is brilliant, but maybe the most cruel I have ever been on.
14:17It's called Evil Genius, and the premise is it's wicked.
14:21Yeah, so it's a Radio 4 podcast, which is a big deal,
14:25because once you've got the old Radio 4 above the door,
14:27it brings brains to the park.
14:29And the reason that's important is it's very contentious,
14:31what we're doing.
14:32We're taking people from history,
14:35really, like, massive people from history.
14:37It could be Gandhi, John Lennon, Mother Teresa,
14:40Henry VIII, that level.
14:42And I have a panel of three people,
14:44and I fiendishly let off three fact bombs
14:47about this historical character.
14:49And at the end of that debate,
14:50they must vote one way or the other,
14:52evil or genius.
14:54Not, I think it's more complicated than that.
14:56What about queer?
14:56No, evil or genius.
14:58And the reason I devised this idea
15:00was I realised we live in a time
15:03where nothing has meaning, everything's shifting.
15:05You can't see that anymore.
15:06You know, nothing really has meaning,
15:07but at the same time,
15:08one wrong syllable cancelled overnight.
15:10So how can we live in a world
15:11that's so horrifically black and white
15:13but only grey at the same time?
15:14The premise is that the grey area
15:17is where the answer is.
15:19But because you don't allow it,
15:20it's really cruel.
15:21I had Elvis Presley and George Best.
15:24I know, the stakes were high for you.
15:25Wow.
15:26And it was just absolute turmoil.
15:29And, but, you know, it's factual.
15:32And it maybe questions the rose-tinted glasses.
15:35We often look at historical grits.
15:38It's true.
15:39We are in culture wars,
15:40so why not have fun with it?
15:41What can comedy do?
15:42How can it inform the debate?
15:43I love it.
15:44I learn so much as well.
15:45I'm sort of just like a scumbag Stephen Fry now.
15:48You know what?
15:49It is visceral and it is funny
15:51and it is a very clever podcast.
15:54Well worth anybody listening to.
15:56It's absolutely brilliant.
15:57Evil genius.
15:58Thank you very much, mate.
15:59Right, let's get back to the game.
16:04Shad, your letters.
16:05May I have a consonant?
16:07You may indeed.
16:08D.
16:09And another?
16:11N.
16:12And a third?
16:15D.
16:16And a vowel?
16:16I.
16:18And another?
16:19A.
16:20And a third?
16:22O.
16:23And a consonant?
16:25L.
16:26And a consonant?
16:27T.
16:29And we'll finish off with a consonant.
16:32Finish with R.
16:35Let's play countdown.
16:35Bye-bye.
17:06OK, time is up in six.
17:09And Shad?
17:10I'm going to risk a seven.
17:11OK, what's the six?
17:13Russian.
17:14What's the risky seven?
17:15Dilator.
17:16Straight over to Susie?
17:18Yes, that's absolutely fine.
17:19Dilator muscles that you have.
17:20Very good indeed.
17:21There you go, seven points.
17:23Didn't even bother to look it up.
17:25Susie's 100% on that.
17:27Why me, Russell?
17:28Could add ordinal.
17:29Very good.
17:31And, of course, Android.
17:33Yes.
17:33Was in there as well.
17:34That can't get for nine, seven.
17:36Well done.
17:37I think dilator is much better words than both of those, by the way.
17:39Yeah.
17:39Seriously good word.
17:4035 plus 17 as we move back to you for more letters.
17:45Consonant, please, Rachel.
17:46Thank you, Ian.
17:47D.
17:48And another one.
17:51T.
17:51And a third.
17:53R.
17:55A vowel, please.
17:57I.
17:58And another vowel.
17:59U.
18:01Another vowel, please.
18:02E.
18:04A consonant.
18:06N.
18:08Another consonant.
18:10P.
18:12And a final vowel, please.
18:14A final...

18:18Here we go.
18:19I.

18:32Here we go.
18:33Here we go.
18:33Here we go.
18:34Shad?
18:48Just a seven.
18:49Just a seven.
18:50Ian?
18:51I'm going to try an eight.
18:52Wow, look at this.
18:53Blow for blow.
18:54Shad, your seven.
18:55Intrude.
18:56And what are you trying?
18:58Intrepid.
18:59Intrepid explorers, as we add the dictionary quarter.
19:02I'm just checking it is all there.
19:04And it is.
19:05Yeah, absolutely brilliant.
19:06Well done.
19:11Missed by dictionary corner.
19:13Missed.
19:14We've got an eight, but not that one.
19:15What's the other one?
19:16It's one of my favourite verbs, under tip.
19:21Well, what a score that was.
19:22What a time to do it as well.
19:23Aim back to within ten.
19:25And it's time to get numbers in its shoes, Shad.
19:27May I have two large and four small, please?
19:30You can indeed.
19:31Too big for not coming up.
19:33And this round is as follows.
19:36Four, eight, two, one.
19:39And the large one, 75 and 100.
19:42And the target to get to 857.
19:45Numbers up.
19:45There's a eaten on?
19:51There,
19:52there.
19:54Don't get this one.
19:54There,
19:55there.
19:56There,
19:57there.
19:58There's one.
19:59There,
20:00there.
20:00There.
20:00There,
20:01there.
20:01I think I've got 856 not written down.
20:19OK, 108 in?
20:21808.
20:23808?
20:23808, sorry, yeah.
20:24You're in an 808 state.
20:26Well, you're out, for sure.
20:27But, Chad, we're not sure, so have a go.
20:29OK, so I did 100 minus 2.
20:33100 minus 2, 98.
20:35Times by the 8.
20:37Times by the 8 for 784.
20:42Add the 75.
20:44Add the 75 for 859.
20:47Minus the 4, add the 1.
20:49And you haven't used either of those.
20:50Take the 4 and add the 1 for one away.
20:55Right, points on the board.
20:578, 5, 7.
21:00Rachel?
21:00It was there, Colin.
21:02If you say 100 times 4, 400.
21:06And then take...
21:07Have you got it now?
21:08Is that enough?
21:098 and the 1 away for 391.

23:21Monitor.
23:22I think you might kick yourself here.
23:23Shad?
23:24And motoring.
23:25Yeah, motoring.
23:26Over the dictionary corner, eight?
23:28Motoring is, I don't think, got anything better than that.
23:31Nothing better than that.
23:31Rooting, nice word, but seven letters.
23:33Yeah, loads of nice words, but only one that counts.
23:36Yeah, motoring, motoring along.
23:38Eight, half a century, up for Shad, and more letters coming your way.
23:42And it's you.

24:18One.
24:19Mr. Fraser, how did you get on?
24:40Only five but not written down.
24:41Shad.
24:42Six.
24:42And the five not written down, Ian?
24:45Roast.
24:46Roast, yes.
24:46And Shad.
24:48Rotas.
24:49Oh, there you go.
24:50Rotas.
24:51And roast, as we add the dictionary, corner and Russell King.
24:55Very obscure, this one.
24:57I believe, so this is a Parsis chief priest.
25:01Dashtor.
25:02D-A-S-T-O-O-R.
25:05Yes.
25:06Dashtor.
25:06And that's an alternative spelling.
25:07You can have it with a U as well, I think.
25:09You can.
25:09Dashtor.
25:10Fantastic.
25:10Time to put your pens down and bask in the glory of Susie Dent's origins of words.
25:15So, the question I'm going to try and answer today is the origin of Mutt and Moggy.
25:23So, I have a Moggy cat straight from Battersea Cats and Dogs Home.
25:28She's definitely just a sort of slightly indecipherable breed, but beautiful with it.
25:32And Moggy actually simply takes its name from Margaret.
25:35A bit like the magpie named after Margaret.
25:38Quite often we will name our animals particularly after, or we use first names.
25:43Robin Redbreast is another one.
25:44So, that's Moggy, but Mutt is a bit more colourful, I think, really, because most of us will remember
25:50Muttly, the kind of sniggering but very lovable canine sidekick in Wacky Races, remember, with
25:57Dick Dashtor.
25:57Can you do the laugh?
25:58You've got to do the laugh.
25:58I can't.
25:59Oh, that's very good.
26:01Very good.
26:02Happy to assist.
26:04But the word Mutt hasn't always actually been associated with dogs, because the first
26:09animals to be described as mutts at the turn of the 20th century, so going back a bit, were
26:14racehorses, and they were ones that were in a sadly very sorry condition and typically underperformed.
26:21They were the first mutts.
26:22Dogs took over soon after, followed by any inferior specimens of the humankind who were
26:29a bit blundering and clumsy and not particularly intelligent.
26:34Where does Mutt come from, though?
26:35It goes back to the 16th century, in fact, and muttonhead, which was the word in fool,
26:43because a fool or a simpleton was often called a muttonhead, and 100 years later, there was
26:48the novelist John Cleland, and he was writing a mutton-headed flock ready to follow any bellwether.
26:54The bellwether is the leading weather or ram that has a bell around its neck.
26:57And muttonhead, that idea of foolishness, eventually became Mutt.
27:01All signs of sheep were lost, really, but the idea really is of something just, you know,
27:06not pure or with not a lot of integrity.
27:09But we love our mutts, and we definitely love Muttley.
27:12Brilliant.
27:12Fantastic.
27:13APPLAUSE
27:14I know all about Susie's cat, but in her attempt to kill me, in which she's had many attempts,
27:20the most recent ones, we went for a lovely walk together, and I came to pick you up at your house.
27:24You know I have an acute allergy to cats.
27:26I can't be one hair, and I can be in bed for days.
27:29I didn't know.
27:29Didn't tell me.
27:30Well, you say you didn't know.
27:31It's either that or you're trying to end me.
27:35Susie, near the end of today's countdown, it's not over yet.
27:38You've got to have faith, Ian.
27:40I've seen bigger comebacks than this, so let's see what we can do.
27:42Let's have some letters.
27:44Consonant, please, Rachel.
27:46Thank you, Ian.
27:47R.

29:12Cabarets.
29:12But my favourite new verb.
29:15To abriact.
29:16Abriacs would, of course, give you eight letters as well.
29:18And abriact is to release a previously repressed emotion.
29:22How can I not know that verb, living on this island?
29:27Right.
29:2864 plays 25.
29:31Shad, it's your letters.

29:45And a third.

29:47And a fourth.

29:49And we'll finish with a consonant.
29:52Finish with D.

32:45Russell, did you say it?
32:47Nothing.
32:48Susie?
32:49No.
32:49Rachel?
32:50I'm not sure if it's a word, but my best guess is mitigable.
32:53Well, let's see if your best guess is right.
32:55Yes, come on.
32:57Come on, Riley.
32:58Come on.
32:59Send the quizzes.
33:01Oh, well, yeah, that's a touchy subject now.
33:04Ian, commiserations, you get the goodie bag.
33:0731.
33:08Oh, great score.
33:09But it wasn't a 31.
33:10There was a lot of rounds earlier on, we're a little bit bitty, and there was a few difficult numbers.
33:14Sunderland will need more points than that, though, to stay up this season.
33:17Oh, about three times the amount, probably with the championship.
33:20But it's all about making sure that we don't go back to that awful league one.
33:24But have you had a good day with us?
33:26Yeah, it's been fantastic, everybody.
33:27It's been great.
33:28It's been great to have you.
33:29He tried to get the snazzy shirt off your back, Shad.
33:32No luck.
33:33Two wins now.
33:34Indeed, indeed.
33:35Dressed in press again tomorrow.
33:37I don't have any more snazzy shirts, but we'll see.
33:40See, I like that modesty.
33:41I only brought two shirts.
33:43I didn't think I was going to be here any longer.
33:45Topless tomorrow.
33:45Well, you shall see.
33:49Well, you'll be back again tomorrow, Russell.
33:52Well, I am topless, so we'll match.
33:53Can't wait to see you, Susie.
33:55Thank you so much.
33:56And, Rich, can we do the quizzes?
33:58You've got Manchester United here.
33:59You've got Evening War over there.
34:01If you had to do Mastermind, what would be your topic?
34:03Oh!
34:04Maybe Wizard of Oz, which we talked about the other day.
34:07Or, randomly, Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
34:11No, every single episode, every single character inside out.
34:14So it would probably be that.
34:16Well, BBC, sign him up.
34:18OK.
34:19BBC, please don't offer me Mastermind, as I'll say no again.
34:22But I'll tell you where I will be this time tomorrow.
