00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Tuesday afternoon.
00:34If you are a regular viewer, you know what to expect.
00:37But if this is a kind of first date for you, don't be too nervous at all.
00:42It's going to go swimmingly. How are you doing, Rachel?
00:44I'm very good. How are you, Colin?
00:45You're good. I'm happy this week, of course. Always happy here.
00:48But Tom Reid Wilson in Dictionary Corner, he's just such a dear human being.
00:52And a man of many talents, but of course, some may know him from a Channel 4 programme called Celebs Go Dating.
00:59What is kind of like the worst type of first date then?
01:02Or what's the best? I like the cinema because you can't make mistakes.
01:05It's quiet. You can't say the wrong thing.
01:07You say that. My friend at uni, an absolutely lovely, lovely boy,
01:12he got a date with our lecturer's daughter.
01:15Oh.
01:16And he decided cinema's a good bet.
01:17So he took her to see Freddie versus Jason.
01:20Oh, no.
01:20And then they shared a bargain bucket afterwards and he didn't even pay for...
01:24No.
01:25I think he didn't get a second date.
01:28He shouldn't have got a second date.
01:29I mean, he's an absolutely gorgeous boy, but didn't have any game at the time.
01:33It'll not surprise you to know I've always been disastrous at first dates.
01:37Terrible at them.
01:37But my worst ever was, I was over laughing.
01:42You tend to over laugh, don't you, in a date.
01:43You know, everything's funny.
01:45And I was, ah, ha, ha.
01:46And I chucked the top of a glass.
01:48And the shard of glass went right into my finger
01:52and I spurted a proper stream of blood all over the table.
01:56What about that for a first date?
01:58I mean, my friends who are now happily married with three kids,
02:00their date ended with her standing on an open ring binder,
02:03leaving a lump of flesh in that ring binder,
02:06falling over, dislocating her elbow and a stream of blood to the bathroom.
02:09So she can top you.
02:10I jolly nearly died on a first date.
02:13He was a very, very taciturn sort of a date
02:17and I thought, I'm going to have to do the lion's share of the talking.
02:20And we went out for supper,
02:21which is a cardinal sin on a first date anyway.
02:24And this beautiful lamb shank arrived
02:27and I thought, gosh, it's getting colder and colder and colder.
02:30And I thought, right, I'm going to invite him to talk.
02:34And he launched into an anecdote, actually,
02:36and I thought, bliss, I can eat now.
02:38And I was shoveling it in and a bit got lodged in my gullet.
02:42Oh, no.
02:43And I thought, my God, my whole life flashed before my eyes.
02:46I staggered to the loo.
02:48I had to perform the Heimlich manoeuvre on myself
02:50and regurgitated it into the washbasin.
02:53It was frightful.
02:55My goodness.
02:55I thought, my last memory might be this terribly taciturn man.
02:59Well, as you've guessed,
03:00Tom Reid Wilson is in Dixonry Corner.
03:03I reckon you do most of the talking
03:05on most of your first dates, I have to say,
03:07alongside the brilliant Susie Day.
03:09Now, unfortunately, our new champion has managed to pick up the nickname Risky George,
03:18which doesn't really inspire confidence.
03:19You managed to win in a crucial countdown conundrum yesterday on the buzzer.
03:23It was sensational.
03:25You kind of definitely brought in a...
03:27Is it a laissez-faire type attitude, haven't you?
03:29Yeah, well, I think you're only here once.
03:31You only get to do countdown once in your life,
03:33so why not try it?
03:34And occasionally, you might get a conundrum on the buzzer sometimes.
03:37Exactly.
03:37We'll see how it goes today.
03:38It was really up and down.
03:39It was brilliant to watch.
03:40You're taking on Avi Sharma.
03:43We've got two youngsters, you know, 28 and 25 years old.
03:46We've also got a South London Croydon for Georgia,
03:49North London for Avi today.
03:52So both sides of the Thames.
03:54Avi, you've done a lot for a 25-year-old, haven't you?
03:57Yeah, you could say that.
03:58Yeah, because you were working in the banking industry.
04:00You were like, I've had enough of that.
04:01And you now run a content creation.
04:03What type of stuff do you do?
04:05So I was a banker for three years,
04:07and then I left my job for a spot on the BBC Apprentice.
04:10Oh.
04:11So, you know, my passion is finance, it's money,
04:14and that's what I talk about on my channel.
04:16Oh, brilliant.
04:17All right, well, listen, let's see if you're on the money today.
04:19Good luck.
04:19Avi and George.
04:24Push letters then, and we can now call you champion.
04:27Off you go.
04:27Hi, Rachel.
04:28Hi, George.
04:28Let's start with a consonant, please.
04:30We start today with B.
04:32And another.

04:44T.
04:45And another.

04:48And a vowel.
04:50E.
04:51And another consonant, please.
04:54Lastly, P.
04:55At home, man in the studio.
04:57Let's play Countdown.
04:58Amen.
05:21Time's up, George.
05:29Seven.
05:29Yes, and Avi?
05:30A five.
05:31The five is?
05:32Teary.
05:33Teary.
05:34And you're going to shed a tear at this.
05:35What's the seven?
05:36Breathe.
05:36Oh, breathe.
05:38Very good.
05:38I thought the chef might have had something else,
05:40because he's not only a bartender, he's a chef as well.
05:43Dexter, we corner.
05:44Mm-hmm.
05:44We had breathy too, didn't we?
05:46We did breathy therapy.
05:49Another seven.
05:50Yes.
05:50We all about preheating.
05:51Pre-heat, yeah?
05:53Avi, your first time picking the letters.
05:55Rachel, a vowel, please.
05:58Thank you, Avi.
05:59I.
06:00Another one.
06:02O.
06:02Another one.
06:04A.
06:05Another one.

06:13Another one.
06:14L.
06:15Another one, please.
06:17T.
06:18And another one.
06:20And lastly, S.
06:22Thirty seconds for everyone.
06:24The two.
06:25Oh, five.
06:25One.
06:25Number one.
06:26More energy.
06:29Even though.
06:33One.
06:34One.
06:36One.
06:37One.
06:39Two.
06:40One.
06:40One.
06:41One.
06:41Three.
06:42One.
06:42One.
06:43One.
06:43Two.
06:44Two.
06:45One.
06:45Two.
06:46Three.
06:46Avi, how did you get on?
06:56I got a five.
06:58And George?
06:59Six.
06:59A six.
07:00Good start for the champion.
07:01Avi, what's the five?
07:02Still.
07:03Still.
07:03And George?
07:04Glopes.
07:05Glopes.
07:05Wow.
07:06OK, fair enough, fair enough.
07:08But the humility's needed, George, at this stage.
07:10Over to Dictionary Corner, Susie and Tom, what have you got?
07:14Well, we are seafaring.
07:16Aren't we, aren't we?
07:18Oh, yes, we can get to an eight with galleots.
07:20Oh, brilliant.
07:21With a double L.
07:21They were single-mastered Dutch cargo boats or fishing vessels.
07:25Fantastic.
07:26All connected to galleons and all sorts of things there.
07:29Beautiful words.
07:30Swashbuckling.
07:3113-0.
07:32We're going to switch to the numbers, which, listen,
07:35former banker Avi should be absolutely fine up,
07:38but George, you get to choose him.
07:39Worked well yesterday, so I'll go for six more again, please.
07:42Right, George?
07:42Yes, the six more challenge.
07:43That's what I like to hear.
07:45And the Colin crumble with it.
07:46First one of the day.
07:48Three, two, one, five, nine, and eight.
07:55And the target?
07:56515.
07:57515.
07:59Numbers up.
08:13Time's up, George.
08:31515.
08:32Bang on.
08:33And Avi?
08:34Uh, 720.
08:35Avi, that's not going to get you any points,
08:38but, George, you think you've got 515?
08:39I think I might have made a mistake, actually.
08:42I think I've used a 3 twice.
08:43Right, well, that's good,
08:44because you would have been trying to get to 103, I'm guessing.
08:47The multiply by 5.
08:48I couldn't get there either.
08:50Rachel, is that the way that you managed to get there?
08:52It's taken me a very long time, but I've finally found that 103 we're looking for.
08:578 plus 9 is 17.
08:592 times 3 is 6.
09:02Times those together for 102.
09:04Add 1 for 103, and then you can times it by 5 for 515.
09:07I think George deserved that for going for 6 small in the first numbers round of the day,
09:15if you don't mind me saying.
09:16He should have went more safe.
09:18That's the first Tea Time teaser.
09:19More safe.
09:20But it's not more safe.
09:22It's rather terrifying, actually.
09:24It's not more safe.
09:25It's rather terrifying, actually.
09:26Welcome back.
09:43More safe becomes fearsome.
09:45Fearsome.
09:46It's not more safe.
09:47It's rather terrifying, actually,
09:49which the first three rounds for every challenger always is on Countdown.
09:53So, Abi, don't worry about that zero you have right now.
09:56It will change, and you're picking these letters.
09:59Rachel, a vowel, please.
10:01Thank you, Abi.
10:02U.
10:03And a consonant.
10:05F.
10:06A vowel, please.
10:08A.
10:09And a consonant.
10:10C.
10:11A vowel, please.
10:13E.
10:13And a vowel, please.
10:16E.
10:16And a consonant.
10:18Q.
10:19And a consonant.
10:20P.
10:22And a consonant.
10:24Lastly, T.
10:25Thank you, Rachel.
10:27Thank you, Rachel.
10:27MUSIC PLAYS
10:29Avi, I'll go with five.
10:58Yeah, tricky round, though. George? Six. A six. Just one more, all the difference. Avi? Facet. Yes, and what about yourself, George? Equate. Equate. We equate that to six more points for you. Well done. Tom, what else? Well, we have teacup. Beautiful. Anything else? You could just put the U in facet for faucet, just to get you to a six. An American tap. Right. 19-0. George, letters, please. Start with the consonant, please. Thank you, George. M. And another? V. And another?
11:28T. A vowel, please. O. Another vowel. E. And a consonant, please. G. And a vowel, please. I. And another vowel. O. And a final consonant, please. A final N. And half a minute.
11:48T. A vowel, please.
12:18George? Seven. A seven for George. And Avi? I'll go with six. You've got a six. The six is? Motion. Motion. And George? Emotion. Emotion.
12:29Call Avi. That's a little gut punch, that, isn't it? Yeah, no worries with emotion. We have the ING there as well, so I'm expecting good things.
12:39Suze? Well, still just sevens. Yes. V2-ing. Yes. Emoting. Emoting. Emoting. Brilliant. Right. Numbers. Avi, you're picking. Will it be six small for you?
12:50Er, no, not this time. Good man. I'm going to go for, Rachel, three large and the rest small.
12:55So, still a tricky combo. Three large, three little. See if we can find ten points from this one.
13:01The little ones are nine, five and five. And the big ones, 25, 75 and 50.
13:08And the target? 861. 861. Numbers up.
13:13Accelerating.
13:25Try to move.
13:31Sorry.
13:37****
13:408, 6, 1.
13:45Tough target, Avi.
13:46I've got 8, 55.
13:488, 55, 6 away, George.
13:508, 60.
13:511 away.
13:53I wonder, is that as good as it gets?
13:5575 plus 25.
13:5875 plus 25, 100.
14:019.
14:01900.
14:02Minus 50.
14:048, 50.
14:05Plus 5, plus 5.
14:06And the two 5s, yeah.
14:081 away, well done.
14:10Rich.
14:10I've got a cup of coffee after this show
14:12says that that can't be done.
14:15I'm trying to find 8, 75 out of this slot,
14:17but you'll have to get back to me in a second.
14:19Sure, I'm not sure.
14:20OK, we'll see.
14:21Thank you very much, Rich.
14:23Let's pause the game.
14:25Don't worry, Avi.
14:26A long way to go.
14:27Don't you worry, it's all going to come for you.
14:29Let's stop and have a little chat with Tom Reid Wilson.
14:32Oh, that would be lovely.
14:33I'm not jealous, don't worry.
14:35I'm not jealous.
14:37But I want to delve into this love of words
14:40and the connection between both of you.
14:42So, I mean, where did it start for you, Tom?
14:44Well, my dad, he was an English teacher before he retired.
14:49And he would do these sort of etymological dances.
14:53It's the only way I can describe them when we were little.
14:56And I remember being knee-high to a grasshopper.
14:59You've heard this story.
15:00I'm so sorry, darling.
15:01I know, it's a lovely story.
15:02But we passed this beautiful Christmas window display.
15:06And he said, look at that wonderful window.
15:08And then he stopped in his tracks, and he often did this.
15:12And he said, window.
15:13Van der Alge from the Dutch, the wind's eye, nothing to do with glass,
15:19everything to do with ventilation and the breeze hopping in and out of the holes in buildings.
15:24And I was absolutely agog.
15:27And I have remained fascinated by words and etymology ever since.
15:32And I think my penchant, because we worked together on the radio, didn't we, darling?
15:37And my penchant for a polysyllable combined with my rather androgynous tones
15:41means that nobody knows that Colin and I worked together on the radio
15:45because everybody thought that I was 90-year-old actresses.
15:49I had Fenella Fielding, Honour Blackman.
15:53In fact, my own dad mistook me for June Whitfield.
15:56Have I got time to tell you about that?
15:59Yes.
15:59Well, E4 did this tremendous campaign to try and get young people to vote.
16:04And they got all these wonderful comedians to talk about the first time they voted,
16:09but it was made to sound like they were talking about losing their virginity.
16:13Oh, OK.
16:13And at the end, June Whitfield had this delicious peek online saying,
16:18it's time to pop your voting cherry or something like that.
16:21And then about two years later, when there was another election,
16:24they decided to recycle it but realised that, sadly,
16:28June Whitfield had passed away and they thought,
16:30well, who sounds a bit like her?
16:32Tom!
16:33So they got me in and I did her line.
16:36And the following day, I told my dad about it
16:40and there was a notification in our family chat
16:43and he said, look at Tom's lovely new advert.
16:45And I watched it and it was the June Whitfield edition.
16:52He didn't know the difference.
16:54So it's not just people on the internet who think I'm dead actresses.
16:59Thank you, Tom.
17:03Right, let's get three more rounds in before the break.
17:06Two letters, one numbers and, George, you'll kick things off again.
17:10Start with a consonant, please, Rachel.
17:11Thank you, George.
17:12R.
17:13And another one.
17:15S.
17:16And another.
17:18C.
17:19And a vowel, please.
17:20A.
17:21And another.
17:22E.
17:23And another.
17:24U.
17:25And then a consonant, please.
17:27K.
17:28And another.
17:30R.
17:31And another consonant, please.
17:33Lastly, T.
17:34Start the clock.
18:00A.
18:00A.
18:01How many, George?
18:06Eight.
18:07Avi?
18:08I'll go with six.
18:09Six is very respectable with those letters.
18:11What do you get?
18:12Tracks.
18:13Yes, and what about yourself, George?
18:15Truckers.
18:16Truckers.
18:17We truck on.
18:17Another eight points.
18:18Well done.
18:21How did you get on, Tom?
18:23Well, we got the same, except we got a little addendum to Avi's
18:29because we had trackers as well.
18:30Yeah.
18:31Anything else?
18:32No, nothing beyond that.
18:33Let's get more letters.
18:34Avi?
18:35A vowel, please, Rachel.
18:36Thank you, Avi.
18:37A.
18:38And another.
18:40E.
18:40And another.
18:42I.
18:43And a consonant, please.
18:45D.
18:46And another.
18:48J.
18:49And another.
18:50S.
18:51And a vowel, please.
18:53E.
18:54And a consonant, please.
18:56L.
18:57And a consonant.
19:00Lastly, D.
19:01And here we go.
19:02And here we go.
19:02E.
19:03And a consonant.
19:06Yeah.
19:14E.
19:14That's time.
19:34Avi, I've got a six.
19:36And George?
19:37I'll try a seven.
19:38Oh, my goodness me.
19:39Avi?
19:40Sealed.
19:41Sealed.
19:41And the seven?
19:42Laddies.
19:43Laddies.
19:44We laddie.
19:46We in the dictionary, yes.
19:47Laddies, four, seven.
19:49Maybe as good as it gets.
19:51It was for us.
19:52We had sidled.
19:53I like sidled.
19:54Sidled is great.
19:56Let's get our third numbers round.
19:57Been really eventful today, actually.
19:59George?
20:00Same again, please, Rachel.
20:01Same again.
20:02All the little ones coming up for you.
20:05And for the third time today, the selection is eight, two, ten, nine, five, and seven.
20:13And the target to reach 939.
20:16Goodness me.
20:17Nine, three, nine.
20:18Numbers up.
20:319-3-9.
20:51George?
20:51No, nothing.
20:52No?
20:52OK, Avi?
20:539-5-6.
20:549-5-6.
20:55Too far away to get any points, but better than George.
20:58Just note that down.
20:59I'm one away.
21:019-3-9, Rachel.
21:03If you say 8 plus 5 is 13.
21:07Ugh.
21:07Have you got it already?
21:09Times 5-7 is 91.
21:11Add 2 is 93.
21:13Times 5-10 is 930, with a 9 left over for 9-3-9.
21:17Very good.
21:20Right, second tea time teaser is set cried.
21:25Set cried.
21:26Be confidential.
21:27Be confidential if you talk bad about a Greek island.
21:31Quite involved, this clue.
21:32Be confidential if you talk bad about a Greek island.
21:35And it's discreet.
21:58Discreet.
21:5948 plays 0.
22:01We've never had a happier contestant not score a point.
22:04I'm loving it.
22:05Avi, I want you to get some, though.
22:06Let's get more letters.
22:08A consonant, please, Rachel.
22:10Thank you, Avi.
22:11M.
22:12And another one.

24:07OK, George Baker.
24:32A risky eight.
24:33A risky eight.
24:35Avi Sharma.
24:36A nice five.
24:39Let's do the nice five.
24:40Yeah, dries.
24:41It might count the risky eight.
24:44Smudgier.
24:45Smudgier from risky George.
24:46Yeah, risky George.
24:47All the risks are paying off today because it's in.
24:49Right, anything else?
24:50That was our best.
24:51That was our best, too, yes.
24:53Umpires for seven, otherwise.
24:54Well, listen, that gives us a little more time then for Origins Awards, Susie.
24:58Well, actually, Tom gave me a lovely lead into this
25:02because he loves corny jokes, so he was telling me some of them.
25:07And one of them was...
25:09Well, I had a joke about a herb and a fish, but this isn't the time or the place.
25:15OK.
25:15So I'm going to do a following on from the time, but I'm going to do herbs today.
25:22I'm going to start with oregano, or oregano, as they say, in the US.
25:26And I love this one because it just shows that urban myths have existed for millennia.
25:32I mean, they've just always been around.
25:33We've always liked to kind of invent our etymologies, really.
25:37So the word itself is probably a loan word, the dictionary says,
25:41and the plant comes from Africa.
25:43But the Greeks came up with a pretty lovely etymology for it.
25:47So they thought that the ore bit sounds a bit like mountain for them.
25:52And ganos means brightness or joy.
25:54So it gave us a word that was joy of the mountain, which is just beautiful.
25:59Basil.
26:00Basil's an interesting one that goes back to the Greek basilikon, meaning a royal.
26:04Basil, probably because basil, this beautiful scent, was added to baths,
26:09unguents that you might pour into your baths, or even medicine sometimes as well,
26:13which means it's a sibling of basilica as well.
26:18Parsley is another one.
26:20Not an urban myth, this is actually really pretty, a bit like Joy of the Mountain,
26:24because it comes from the Latin for rock celery.
26:28I quite like this one, because if you think about the leaves,
26:30well, parsley, shape of parsley.
26:32It's a little bit like celery leaves, so I like that one.
26:34Rosemary, nothing to do with the name rose or Mary.
26:38It was altered in sound, and it actually goes back to the Latin rosmarinos,
26:43meaning Jew of the sea, which is another lovely one.
26:46Sage, nothing to do with being sage or wise and everything to do with the Latin salvus,
26:51meaning healthy, because it was thought to be a very, very good few,
26:54which again makes it a sibling of salute, solid, and lots of other words in English.
26:59Time itself goes back to a Greek word meaning to burn,
27:04because it was used in sacrifices, we think.
27:07And tarragon, we have Greek here, and that's a surprising one.
27:10It goes back to dracon, which is connected to the English dragon.
27:14And we think this is because there was a widespread belief
27:17that tarragon could ward off serpents and dragons,
27:21but it could also heal snake bites.
27:27Well, our chef and bartender, George, is all the spice he needs so far.
27:3263-0 with four rounds left.
27:35Avi, you still having the time of your life?
27:37Yeah, definitely.
27:38Good. Let's continue and get more letters.

28:48Loney, yes.
28:49The old football Loney there, you'd think of straight away.
28:53So let's kick it over to the dictionary corner.
28:55Where we had, for music buffs, A-tonal.
28:58A-tonal, yes.
29:00Anything else?
29:01No, another six.
29:03Etalon, which is from physics.
29:04It's all to do with reflection, light reflection, but no better than six.

30:33Right, two rounds left.
30:35Abbey, you're in charge of the numbers.
30:37You're going to play it safe or continue to throw caution to the wind?
30:40No, I'm not going to play it safe.
30:42Rachel, I would like three large and three small, please.
30:44You want to earn these points, yeah.
30:46And I finally worked out that last one, by the way.
30:4841 times 21, if anyone's playing along.
30:50Right, final numbers of the day.
30:52Good luck, Abbey.
30:53The little ones, three, seven, four.
30:57And the big ones, 75, 100 and 50.
31:00And the target, 644.

31:346-4-4. Avi?
31:39I've got 6-3.
31:416-6-3. And George?
31:436-4-3.
31:456-4-3. One away. Avi, what have you just done?
31:48Right, let's get it, George.
31:50100 plus 75.
31:521-7-5.
31:53Times 4.
31:54Times 4, 700.
31:56Minus 50, minus 7.
31:58And, yeah, you haven't used either of those.
32:01One away. 6-4-3.
32:02There you go. And, uh, and Rach?
32:04It's been tough today, obviously.
32:05They've made it difficult for you with their selections.
32:08But 6-4-4.
32:09Yes, I found a way.
32:10With 50 times 3 is 150.
32:14Divide it by 75 for 2.
32:162 times the 4, rather, gives you 8.
32:19And then 100 minus 8 is 92.
32:23And times it by 7 for 6-4-4.
32:25Very good.
32:30It's 82 to 0.
32:32So, let's set the scene.
32:34Now, normally, you'd feel a little distraught having somebody and not.
32:38But I'm feeling totally cool about it, because Avi's just so much fun.
32:42Yes.
32:42And so chilled and making the show really good.
32:45Right, Avi, put your finger on the buzzer.
32:47George, your finger on the buzzer.
32:49You're just looking for one nine-letter word.
32:52As we reveal today's countdown conundrum.
32:56George, remounted.
33:04Let's look.
33:05Oh, yes.
33:07APPLAUSE
33:07I think for you, Avi, you just wanted the experience.
33:13And you just approached it in such a lovely way.
33:16Yeah, thank you.
33:16It doesn't feel bad.
33:17I thought it would be awful for, you know, feeling.
33:20Because a lot of people come on and, like, it's...
33:22They just really, really want to do well.
33:24Whereas, I think you've just...
33:26You brought along your mate.
33:27You're here.
33:27You're having a laugh.
33:28No, I am.
33:29You know, and there was a free hotel, you know.

33:37But, look, at the end of the day, when you're up against George,
33:40you know, I think you've got a real talent.
33:42And I hope you're going to win it.
33:44Thanks.
33:44Yeah.
33:45I do think it was more about you than George, to be honest.
33:48Give Avi a huge round of applause.
33:51APPLAUSE
33:51Risky George, there was nothing to risk today,
33:56but, you know, tomorrow's another day.
33:58Yeah, we'll see what we have to risk tomorrow.
34:01See you then.
