00:30Hello, everybody. It's time to dig your heels in for another episode of Countdown as we stick the boot into the letters and numbers once more. So let's slip on over to the board. And there she is loafing around. It's Rachel Riley. Hiya.
00:43Loafing around in my 10 centimetre heel.
00:46Listen, we have a trainer fanatic to introduce to you in just a little bit. But you are obviously the fashion icon of UK daytime TV. And I've never told you this, but you know how I always know which dressing room is yours?
00:59How? You always, for whatever reason, you kick your shoes off outside the door. So that's how we always know.
01:04Yeah, it's like the Wizard of Oz, which has disappeared and all that remains is my sparkly shoes.
01:10Now listen, when you're not on air, it's hoodies and it's jeans, tomboyish almost. But obviously over 200 shows a year.
01:20Yeah. Can you put a number on how many pairs of shoes that you own?
01:24Quite a few pairs.
01:26Now, you're right. As soon as I'm out of here, though, the heels are off and I'm in the flats.
01:30What would Countdown be if it was a footwear?
01:32I think it would be a comfortable, stylish pair of slippers.
01:37It would be, wouldn't it? Slippers. They're always there. You always underestimate them.
01:41But if they were gone, you'd be absolutely gutted. It would be that simple.
01:45Well, listen, let's flip-flop over to Dixonary Corner and introduce the soul of Countdown, Susie Dent.
01:51Oh.
01:52Yeah, Susie's spending her last day with the Irish brogue of Neil Delamere.
01:55Well, I tell you who has got his feet under the table in this studio, it is our champion, Quinn Bartlett.
02:03Two scores over 100 in his debut, three nines in the letters round.
02:08And as I say, every time we come off air, we have a little chat, you feel like there's more to come.
02:13Hopefully more in the numbers, yeah.
02:15Yeah. Well, listen, hopefully that we've got stern competition for you today.
02:19The reason why we've had all this talk of shoes is because we have a man here.
02:24Well, nine years, a semi-professional basketball player, a financial whiz, a former world top 100 at the FIFA computer game.
02:32I think I'm in love.
02:34And he also owns over 150 pairs of, well, us Kuru kids call them sneakers.
02:39You older people at home will call them trainers or goodies or whatever it is.
02:43So please welcome to the show, Leon Francis.
02:48So, I mean, it's a whole world, this collection of trainers.
02:52Take me inside it.
02:55It's a culture.
02:56It's a culture.
02:57So it started with, for myself, it started with sport.
03:02Say, the playing, yeah, yeah.
03:04Yeah.
03:04You need a decent pair of shoes to wear, I guess.
03:06So with myself and a lot of my friends, I'd say every year, it'd be who gets the newest shoes, who gets the flyers' shoes.
03:15Whereas the flashy shoes or the colours of the light-up, we didn't have those because we've probably been kicked out of the group.
03:22But yeah, just over time, over time, it just starts to build.
03:25So, yeah, a lot of history behind it.
03:28Well, listen, good luck to you today.
03:29You're up against a great champion.
03:32And, Quinn, let's put a best foot forward and get some manners.
03:35I'll try.

06:20Honesty here, did you spot it? No, I had bromine, or bromine, and I was wondering, could we have a bromine, but we can't.
06:28No, it's a must now. So, I'm sorry to disallow that, and I have to also, I'm afraid, disallow Ernest, which is spelled differently. Sorry, Liam.
06:36OK, fine. Brimstone. Brilliant. He's on fire. Boom, boom. Yeah, there you go. Said it before me. Well done.
06:4226 points to start for Quinn, and let's get our first numbers game from Mr Bartlett. Yeah, I'll stick to one large, please.
06:50One day you'll be brave enough for six little ones, as your heart truly wants, I can tell.
06:54But for now, five little ones are seven, one, eight, two, and nine. And the big one, 50. And the target to reach 483.

10:09Let's Ratooned to Dextery Corner, Susie.
10:12Yes.
10:13It's an excellent to get an eight out of this, actually, because it was tricky.
10:16But Sugarcane produces Ratooned, for example.
10:19It's new shoots, simply.
10:21I bet you didn't spring anything else over there, Neil.
10:23No.
10:25There's a six or an eight, and I let the muse come in.
10:29You talked to me about The Wizard of Oz.
10:31Tornado.
10:32Nice.
10:32For seven, but nothing as good as Ratooned.
10:34There you go.
10:35Right.
10:35Well, well done.
10:36Our champion's in great form.
10:37Leon, don't panic yet, because there was very little there you could do.

11:47Okay, the five is?
11:49Spine.
11:50Yes, no worries with that.
11:51And Quinn.
11:52Mopanis.
11:53I think you've learnt your countdown dictionary here.
11:56Yes, Mopanis is a word that comes up all the time.
11:58So Mopanis is a tree found in southern Africa.
12:01Okay.
12:01It's always very frustrating if you're competitive and in Dictionary Corner
12:05and you have someone like Quinn Bartlett on.
12:07Let me answer that by doing this.
12:10This paper was made out of Mopanis tree.
12:13Thanks, Quinn.
12:14He is flying.
12:14Yeah, Liam, we're all in the same boat.
12:16You may as well relax and enjoy the ride.
12:18Let's get some more numbers.
12:20Too large, please.
12:21And let's find another ten points for you.
12:23Thank you, Liam.
12:24Too large.
12:25Four little.
12:26Coming up, they are six, nine, ten, four.
12:30And the big ones, 175.
12:33And the target, 560.
12:36Number three.
12:49We love that, don't we? 560, Liam?
13:10Yeah, 560.
13:10Yeah, and Quinn?
13:11560.
13:12Off you go, Liam, shoot.
13:14100 times 6.
13:15600.
13:164 times 10, minus the 2.
13:18Yeah, straightforward, this one.
13:20What about yourself, Quinn?
13:21That is 75 times 6.
13:2375 times 6, 450.
13:25Plus 100, plus 10.
13:27Lovely.
13:27Same result.
13:2910 points apiece.
13:3210 point is way better than 3 point is, Liam.
13:35Well done.
13:3661 plays 20.
13:37We'll take a little break.
13:39And listen, you've been entertaining us.
13:41Four days straight, Neil Delamere.
13:43This is the point, in your last day, we get to ask you a question.
13:47So, one each from us.
13:48Rachel, do you want to go first?
13:50Good morning.
13:50Well, a few years ago, Susie and I went on a girls' trip to Dublin, and we couldn't turn
13:55around for Countdown fans everywhere.
13:57Is it like that in your family, or did we just happen to find them all?
14:00Yeah, no, no.
14:01No, it's massive.
14:03It's massive in the country.
14:04And my parents, my mother's no longer with us, but loved it.
14:07I used to watch it with her.
14:08My dad will be watching today, so hello to my dad.
14:11He's the one, I suppose, I would take after more in some ways, you know.
14:16He's 87 now.
14:17So, I want to get to that level of not caring about what other people think, you know.
14:21He's great.
14:22You know where it's biggest in Ireland?
14:24Countee down.
14:25I love it there.
14:26Susie, what's your question?
14:28One of the great things about today for me has been just as much the chats that we've
14:33had off air, because Neil is a massive word enthusiast, and I just, have you always been?
14:38Yeah, I absolutely love learning about different languages, how they're structured.
14:43We actually do a podcast, and we met a guy recently who was a linguist, and he was doing
14:48what I really wanted to get him on, and he was talking to us about what's the most important
14:52number in the world, and he said it was 12, because the Sumerians used to count the joints,
14:56which is what we were talking about, your finger joints.
14:58That's how you get to 12.
15:00Yeah.
15:00And he spoke to us about various different languages, and I was just so into that.
15:04So, this seems like a dream come true for me to do this show, to be honest with you.
15:07What is the podcast called?
15:09It's called Why Would You Tell Me That?
15:10I want to bring you back down the earth.
15:13What's the smallest crowd you've ever had to tell jokes in front of?
15:17When I did the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, so nobody knows who you are when you start,
15:22and I did a show, and my agent at the end of the run gave me a box of chocolates, right,
15:28and for getting through the Edinburgh run, and I gave everybody in the audience a chocolate and didn't get through to the second layer of the box of chocolates.
15:39So, maybe 11, maybe 10.
15:41Does the heckle just sound so much worse if there's only, you know, 10 people in the crowd?
15:47Because one person shouts at you, that's 10%.
15:49Yeah, well, if one person starts it with a note, just writes the first word, and then they all just go along and write the next words,
15:55and then they hand it to you, it's pretty bad.
15:57At 11, I had an audience once and they threw four out, which was one of the best gigs I've ever done.
16:01But sometimes, if there's 10 people there and they're up for it, it can be the best night you'll ever have, you know?
16:06Neil Delamere, brilliant.
16:10Hasn't he been wonderful?
16:12As has been our champion, Quinn, 61 plays 20.
16:15So far to go in championship letters.

17:24Waviest.
17:25Well, we had waviest, but no other sevens, there's Fiesta there for six, so he spotted the seven, the one seven that we spotted.
17:33Fantastic.
17:34Another seven points.
17:36Liam, let's get your letters.
17:37Okay, I need to come back.

18:54Cleanse is there for seven as well.
18:57But, yeah, nothing better than seven.
18:59So the machine is working.
19:01How many times are you going to just say nothing better than what Quinn gets?
19:05How do you play against it?
19:06Right.
19:06Could I have a couple of extra letters?
19:08That would be great.
19:09You'd still lose.
19:10Yeah, probably.
19:11Right.
19:12Let's get more numbers.
19:13It's on you, Quinn.
19:14I'll keep it hopefully simple.
19:16One large, please.
19:18No, still not brave enough.
19:20One of these days, we'll get six and we'll have to be one large, five little.
19:23And for the third time today, the numbers are five, three, nine, one and four.

22:46That's in there.
22:47OK.
22:48Now, there may be a chance, for the first time in three days,
22:51the dictionary quarter may have a longer word than Quinn Bartlett.
22:55We'll find out. Let's go to dictionary quarter.
22:57Well, there is a seven for dipolar.
23:00So, a lot of people would say bipolar, but dipolar also in the dictionary.
23:04And there is an eight.
23:06Come on.
23:07Tripodal.
23:08Yes.
23:09So, a tripodal means having three legs.
23:12So, like a stool, for example.
23:14Or my dog.
23:15My dog has three legs, yeah.
23:16Lola.
23:17She's a foster dog.
23:18She's lovely.
23:19Oh, go at it.

23:21That's why you got it.

24:20Quinn?
24:28Er, I'll try an eight.
24:29OK, and Leon?
24:31A five.
24:32What's the five, Leon?
24:33Sport.
24:34Try an eight.
24:35You're not sure?
24:35Let's have a...
24:35I think of isotrope.
24:38Isotrope, Susie.
24:39Er, I don't think it's just isotope.
24:42Yes, not with the R, I'm afraid.
24:43There you go.
24:44So there you go.
24:44Leon gets the point.
24:45Five was the longest from her two contestants.
24:48I've got a pretty good idea
24:50that Neil Delamere will be scraping the barrel here.
24:53Er, no.
24:54I think you've done quite well here.
24:56Coopers.
24:58Oh, OK.
24:59I didn't realise.
25:01Well done, yeah.
25:02Seven, yeah.
25:03Copters.
25:03I was looking at the sky.
25:05Or because the island of Ireland is tropical.
25:07Tropics.
25:08Tropics is seven.
25:09There you go.
25:10Right.
25:10Well, well done.
25:11The score is 92, plays 25.
25:14As we have some more origins of words
25:16and we cross over to the wonderful Susie Dent.
25:19Well, a bit of a strange one today.
25:22And I'm not sure whether the person I'm about to tell you about
25:25essentially wore sneakers.
25:28But he did need to sneak around quite a lot,
25:30which is, of course, where sneakers get their name
25:32because you sort of walk on them very stealthily.
25:34Or at least that was the idea.
25:36But I'm going to talk about Jesse James.
25:37And you probably know about Jesse James.
25:38One of the most notorious outlaws in US history,
25:41killed in Missouri.
25:42And he committed, notoriously, as I say,
25:45daring violent robberies.
25:47And he was also the leader of the most wanted gang
25:50on the American frontier, essentially.
25:53But the reason I mention him is that
25:54there was a really strange term used for him.
25:58And it's fallen out of use.
26:00And you would have found it in Old English as well,
26:02which was a friendless man.
26:03An outlaw was described as a friendless man.
26:06And if someone spotted such a friendless man
26:09or an outlaw in the street,
26:11they would cry wolf's head,
26:13which was part of Old English law.
26:15And it was a clarion call to any member of the public
26:17to essentially hunt this bandit down.
26:21And it seems really odd that someone would shout this in the street.
26:24But as I've said on count number four,
26:25there are lots of different examples in history.
26:26And one of my favourites is hot beef,
26:29which was cottony rhyming slang in 19th century London
26:33for stop thief.
26:34And that's where, in fact, we think having a beef with someone came from.
26:37Anyway, back to Jesse James.
26:39A reward of $5,000 was put on his head.
26:42And this was put up by Pinkerton's detective agency.
26:46And they were hired to track the outlaws in the West,
26:48including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, in fact.
26:52But their logo, their unblinking, ever-watching eye
26:55with the caption or the slogan,
26:57We Never Sleep,
26:58became synonymous then with private eye.
27:00And private eye originally was a riff on private
27:03and then the letter I, because they were private investigators.
27:06Brilliant.
27:10Absolutely nothing like it.
27:12Nothing like our champion, Quinn.
27:14Liam, let's enjoy these last four rounds.
27:16Let's get some more letters from you, my friend.

28:33You're a comedian.
28:34Never tell a comedian a joke.
28:35How do you turn a duck into a soul singer?
28:38I don't know.
28:39Put it in the microwave and wait until it's Bill Withers.
28:42And as we've had a couple of Withers, it's a perfect time.
28:45You like that?
28:46Yeah.
28:46There you go.
28:48What have you got?

28:54player, Bill Withers.
