Mexico's Attorney General's Office begins the investigation into an alleged bribe to
00:04
former President Enrique Peña Nieto in the case of the Israeli spy software Pegasus.
00:10
The Attorney General, Alejandro Gertz Manero, informed that a formal investigation has been
00:15
opened against Peña Nieto for an alleged bribe of $25 million related to the operation
00:21
of the Pegasus espionage software during his government.
00:24
In addition, he pointed out that all the information about the alleged money delivery will be
00:29
requested to Israel as part of the International Cooperation Agreement in Legal Matters.
00:35
The indictment against Nieto states that Pegasus was sold to several Mexican institutions,
00:40
among them the former Attorney General's Office, the Ministry of National Defense, the now defunct
00:46
Center for Research and National Security.
00:49
President Enrique Peña Nieto.
00:55
Effectively, since the beginning of the previous administration there have been allegations
01:03
that have not been corroborated with sufficient evidence.
01:07
In this new case we have specific, clear and very precise reports of relations with companies
01:14
that sold Pegasus.
01:20
Even the former President had already given an answer.
01:24
Of course we have already opened a file, and we are going to ask the Israeli authorities,
01:30
that this information they provided on social media be included in our files so that we can move forward.
01:41
Our relationship with these authorities has not been easy.
01:45
We have had many problems that practically came up since what happened in Ayotzinapa,
01:52
and we have cases of people detained there for several years.
01:56
I hope that in this case we have a faster response.
02:02
In her daily morning press conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that
02:07
her government will not protect anyone involved in the fuel theft which is being investigated
02:12
by authorities.
02:16
We will go as far as the investigations go, as far as they go.
02:22
We are not going to protect anyone, anyone.
02:28
Even if there are public servants involved, or rather, public officials involved.
02:34
Or entrepreneurs involved.
02:36
We must have proofs.
02:38
But we have to eradicate completely this crime.
02:44
We made progress during the government of President Manuel Lopez Obrador.
02:48
But there are still things.
02:50
We are going to work on them.
02:53
We are working with a lot of discretion and unity to continue the investigation with the
02:57
information that is being generated.
03:00
We are working with a lot of discretion.
