00:00Albert Einstein whose theories changed the world of science forever.
00:07There was a time in his life when he was wandering from door to door for nine years in search of a job.
00:14Even among his classmates, if anyone did not get a job, it was only Einstein.
00:22But who would have thought that the boy who was considered the slowest learner in school,
00:26would one day get an offer to become the president of Israel at his door?
00:35What did Einstein reply to this Israeli ambassador and what were the reasons due to which no one was ready to hire such an intelligent person?
00:45Once again flattery in ZemTV videos.
00:48Nazarene Albert Einstein was born in 1879 in the German city of Ulm.
00:52He was looked at with strange eyes in his childhood itself because he was not like other children.
00:58He was a very slow learner.
01:01He started speaking late and in school, teachers considered him an average or weak student.
01:06But the reason behind this was that Einstein looked at everything with curiosity.
01:11If he did not understand something in school, instead of memorizing it by rote, he would try to understand its concepts.
01:21Due to which he always lagged behind in the course.
01:25Einstein was very creative since childhood and this was his weakness and later became his strength.
01:34Einstein's early education took place in Munich.
01:38Where he did not like the strict discipline based system of German schooling at all.
01:42A time came when fed up, Einstein left school and shifted to Switzerland with his family so that he could make his place in the liberal education system there.
01:54He wanted to take admission in physics and mathematics in Zurich Polytechnic College there.
02:00In the entrance examination, he solved the maths and physics paper immediately.
02:07But he failed miserably in other subjects like geology, literature and politics.
02:13After the entrance examination, the college professor called Einstein to his office.
02:19He was quite surprised to see Einstein's answers in maths and physics.
02:22He wanted to know who taught Einstein all this.
02:27To which Einstein replied that he had studied all this himself.
02:31But Einstein had failed miserably in other subjects in which mostly rote learning was enough.
02:38The professor told him that if he wanted admission in this college, then only mathematics and physics would not work.
02:45He would have to spend one more year in school to prepare for other subjects.
02:50Disappointed, Einstein had to spend one more year in school and luckily the next year he passed the entrance exam of Zurich Polytechnic College.
03:03But taking admission in college did not change Einstein's nature.
03:08Here also he would skip boring lectures, study on his own and was not very impressed with the professor.
03:14That is, it was not in Einstein's nature to follow him around.
03:19The result of all this was that when Einstein graduated in 1900, his professors refused to give him a job recommendation.
03:28Now of course he was very intelligent but Einstein did not have any strong reference.
03:33There was no mentor who could get him an academic or research job.
03:40In those days, the recommendation of a professor was very important to get a job in the field of science and Einstein lagged behind in that race and the result was that his classmates who were academically stronger than him reached better positions because they had the support of the professor.
03:56Einstein applied at many places in Germany and Switzerland.
04:05He was rejected at universities, schools, research institutes.
04:09He wrote letters to the professors but everywhere he got the same answer.
04:12We are sorry, we cannot hire you.
04:17This was also personally painful for Einstein because he felt that people were not able to see his work and potential.
04:24Einstein's frustration can be well gauged from his letters and diary.
04:30Einstein once wrote in his diary, it seems as if the world does not need me.
04:36Every door seems to be closed.
04:39In the letter written to his family, it was mentioned, I apply everywhere, but neither do I get a reply, nor does anyone need me.
04:49It seems that nothing is going right in my life.
04:53In another famous letter that he wrote to his girlfriend Maleva, Einstein said, I feel I have become a useless person.
05:00I live only in physics, but the world listens only to those people who fit into their system.
05:10This frustration was affecting Einstein's personal life.
05:15Lack of money, tensions in marriage and dissatisfaction with himself.
05:20Another problem was that Einstein's nature was very idealistic.
05:24He was clear that he would only do a job related to science.
05:27He had no interest in practical or commercial jobs.
05:32At that time, Einstein was having an affair with one of his classmates, Maleva.
05:38But the two were not getting married only because Einstein did not have a job.
05:43Financial pressure was increasing.
05:46Maleva was expecting Einstein to earn something but Einstein's hands were tied.
05:51A time came when Einstein had to earn money by becoming a private tutor.
05:58Where he used to teach maths and physics to school students.
06:02Finally, a friend of Einstein advised him to apply for the job of an examiner in the Barron Patent Office.
06:09It was a low-level government job, but at least it was a start.
06:14Einstein applied and surprisingly, without much experience, he got the job in 1902.
06:22Einstein's job in the Barron Patent Office was to check the applications for new inventions and patents.
06:29To see what was really innovative and what was not.
06:32This job was boring but it was like a straw to hold on to for Einstein.
06:41Since this job was 9 to 5, he continued his scientific research on nights and weekends.
06:47Of course, this was not the professor's job for which Einstein was striving.
06:52But whatever was there was better than nothing.
06:54After that, a time came when Einstein's fortunes started changing.
07:01While working in the patent office, Einstein made the biggest bang of his career in 1905.
07:07In a single year, he published four revolutionary papers.
07:11These included special relativity, photoic effect, Brownian motion and mass-energy equivalence also known as E equals mixed square.
07:21These papers shook the scientific world of that time.
07:27Suddenly, the name of a person doing a simple job in the patent office started becoming famous among the scientists of Europe.
07:35One of Einstein's papers, photoic effect, became the foundation of quantum physics and the other, special relativity, changed the understanding of time and space.
07:43After passing out in 1900, finally in 1909, i.e. nine years after graduation, he got a job offer to become an assistant professor at the University of Zurich.
07:57People never fully understood the personality of Albert Einstein.
08:02The image of Einstein outside the world of science has been very confusing.
08:08On one hand, people show him in a funny way.
08:12A strange socially awkward scientist with disheveled hair who was only engrossed in his books and theories.
08:19On the other hand, he is also seen in a serious and important political role.
08:24In 1932, Einstein fled from Germany.
08:30Just a year before Hitler took power there because Hitler was very much against Jews and Einstein also belonged to a Jewish family.
08:38Einstein moved to America and became a professor of theoretical physics at Princeton, New Jersey.
08:44He was not only a hero of science but also a famous and respected face of the Jewish community all over the world.
08:55During this time, the process of forming the state of Israel was going on and there was a lot of fighting in Palestine over this issue.
09:01Finally, Israel formally came into existence in 1948, but after just four years, in 1952, Israel's first president, Koham Wiseman, passed away.
09:15Now the Jewish community had no leader.
09:19So at that time, the Zionist leaders thought why not make Albert Einstein the next president.
09:24After all, he was a renowned physicist and was also respected in the society.
09:31Meaning, he had become not only a scientist but also a political and cultural icon.
09:38On the 17th of November 1952, Einstein received a letter.
09:43This letter was sent by Abba Eben, who was Israel's ambassador to the United Nations at that time.
09:48It was written in the letter that through this letter, Prime Minister Ben-Gurio's message is being conveyed to you that if the Israeli parliament votes you to be the president of Israel, will you accept this offer?
10:02If you agree, you will have to shift to Israel and take citizenship there.
10:07The Prime Minister assures that in such a situation, you will be allowed to continue your scientific work with complete freedom and convenience.
10:21This was a very big and emotional offer.
10:24But Einstein had different plans.
10:27The reply he gave brings out another aspect of his life.
10:30Einstein wrote in response that I am very emotional about the offer given to me by Israel to make me the president.
10:41But at the same time I am sad and ashamed that I cannot accept it.
10:46I have been dealing with objective things all my life.
10:50That is why I neither have the nature to handle people nor the experience of fulfilling official responsibilities.
10:56That means Einstein did not consider himself fit for political leadership.
11:03At that time Einstein was 73 years old.
11:07When he got this offer, he told a guest staying at his house that this offer was very awkward.
11:12Later he also explained to a Jerusalem newspaper which was campaigning for him that I do not want to face any such chance where I have to go with the decisions of the government which can go against my conscience.
11:26That means Einstein was not refusing only because he was not politically fit.
11:37But also because he never wanted to go against his conscience in his life.
11:41Then no matter how big a position or respect he got.
11:45People who were getting emotionally excited about the idea of making Einstein the president were forgetting one important thing that Einstein was definitely sympathetic to Israel.
11:57But he was never a passionate Zionist.
12:01When Einstein refused the president's offer, former Prime Minister Ben Curio told his assistant that if Einstein had accepted this offer, it would have created a big problem for us.
12:14Because in 1946, two years before the formation of Israel, Einstein had said in front of an international community that the idea of a state is not in my heart.
12:25That is, in reality Einstein did not want to see Israel as a separate state.
12:32Finally, on the 16th of December 1952, Yitzhak Ben Zavi became the second president of Israel.
