An exclusive chat with Leo Sayer ahead of his Blackpool show on July 9.

00:00how are you feeling about performing in blackpool next month yeah it's fantastic really good and

00:08look i mean i was born on a south coast um a seaside town shorn by sea and of course brighton

00:14and worthing well in the old days they both had beautiful piers you know um they've still got i

00:20mean there's still the the palace pier with all the funfair and everything like that in brighton

00:24and worthing pier looks a bit sad these days but it's still you can go on there and you can

00:29do all the you know the the the penny machines and punch and judy is still there in the summer

00:35and things like that so so yeah so i come from that background of where

00:40you know um the seaside was always kind of linked with funfairs and things like that

00:46and having played all over i mean played the opera house quite a few times in blackpool

00:50which was you know when they first said i was playing in blackpool i was hoping it was the

00:55opera house but no it's it's still going to be great it's a lovely theater apparently

01:00so um no i love being up there and i think we've got a couple of nights so i'm going to be walking

01:04around and having some fun you know love the seaside there it's great we are look we're hitting it in

01:10the summer months so there should be a lot of people in town it's going to be exciting you know

01:15what are you expecting from the blackpool audience

01:17oh look they all know the songs i mean i play last year we played liverpool philharmonic

01:23and we played uh got to god what's it called the big theater in manchester

01:29there's quite a few

01:32it's a performing arts place you know and it's like really good so we always get a good crowd

01:37that part of the world you know and all the way to preston and south and southport you know so it's

01:43always been a biggie um to play up there and they love the music you know and you mentioned you will

01:48explore a bit of blackpool can i ask you have you got anything in mind you want to go see i don't i

01:53don't do i'm too old for the rides now so i don't think i'll be up on the big dipper um but but i'll

02:00i'll see the pier and you know and look at the tower and um that's what it was as well there was the tower

02:06theater in the old days as well right underneath the tower or right beside it was a big theater there

02:12yeah we played there as well so blackpool tower they used to call that and that was fantastic

02:17why should people see you in blackpool come down because i think um we do we do things in a very

02:24classic way as well we you know you you you see a lot of bands now okay on stage or artists and

02:30there's a lot of backing tracks and there's effects and there's sequencing and there's the drummer's playing

02:36to a click in his ear we don't do any of that we're really old-fashioned kind of like a van

02:41morrison show or or like a bob dylan show we are we have a i mean i've got a wonderful band really

02:48great guys you know um uh one guy from cheshire one guy from yorkshire one guy from stroud in

02:55gloucestershire and another guy from stoke-on-trent and we've been working together quite a time and we

03:00get on stage and create a chemistry even though we've got the songs and we've got to be faithful to

03:05those we can play around a little bit and have some fun so you're always going to see a different

03:10show wherever you go you know it's like there'll be some element that will be you know jammed in

03:17there or or kind of i don't know we're just playing off each other there'll be something different

03:22and i think i'm quite funny on stage as well so i i tell lots of stories you know so so yeah it can be

03:27different you know every night and you know i mean as a performer i love being an entertainer

03:34as well not just a singer you know so it's entertaining the crowd and and you you stand

03:40on stage and you find there's elements that you can work to there might be some eget who's kind of

03:45like heckling you but you use him you know you make it work he's got get on with it leon you so you

03:50get on with this you know so that become it all becomes part of the show and it's it's great you

03:56know so i go into every show with um a kind of not too much anticipation you know i i it it builds as

04:04it goes on it's great we do two halves no support act it's just me so we start right from the start

04:11and there's like an intermission in the middle and then we come back rocking you know for the second part

04:16you know is it so it's kind of fun you know i love doing it i can't imagine myself doing anything

04:21else i'll be doing this when i'm 100 i ran i reckon you know i'm 77 now so i'm feeling fit and it's good
