A man has died after being shot by police during a seven-hour siege at daisy hill in Victoria’s central Goldfields. The 39-year-old had barricaded himself in a shed, shot at a neighbour and threatened officers.
00:00Police descended on a property on Menzies Drive in the small town of Daisy Hill after reports of several shots fired at around 3pm on Thursday afternoon.
00:11The man hit inside the shed when police attended, making threats to shoot those police and also indicating that he had a knife and bomb slash explosives at his disposal.
00:23Police believe the 39-year-old man had a homemade gun and had fired at and missed his neighbour whose property he was hiding at.
00:32He wasn't keen at all on engaging with police who attempted to negotiate with him but unfortunately could not.
00:40Neighbours were evacuated during the seven-hour siege that police say ended when the man stepped out of the shed and shot at officers who fired back.
00:48I can say that a number of shots were fired in the exchange with police but who fired what, at what time, I cannot tell you.
00:55The man died at the scene. No police were injured.
00:57Disbelief. I couldn't believe it. I don't know why, how, you know, how it all escalated to all this.
01:05He's a good guy. Yeah, you know, he's really friendly, you know, and it's sort of out of character for him to do these sort of things.
01:13This usually quiet street has been a hive of activity. Throughout the day police, detectives, forensics, the canine and bomb squad have all been on scene trying to piece together what's happened.
01:25This is something no police officer certainly wants to be involved in when they're at work.
01:31The Police Professional Standards Command is investigating the shooting.
