00:01
Now, for the new manager of Bristol City, Gerard Struber,
00:05
he obviously begins his first summer in charge.
00:08
Now, obviously, we spoke about the appointment
00:10
and with foreign managers,
00:11
Bristol City haven't had the best track record
00:13
as of recent as well.
00:16
So this is something that they have to get right.
00:18
Obviously, Liam Manning took them to the playoffs
00:19
for the first time in 17 years last season.
00:23
And then suddenly he's now the Norwich City manager.
00:26
So a lot to go on this summer in terms of Bristol City.
00:30
Maybe Manning did leave because of the sort of lack of investment
00:33
behind the ownership at Bristol City.
00:36
So it is something that they have to get right
00:38
in terms of moving forward
00:39
and making them more sustainable in the second tier
00:42
and, you know, trying to really, really push on
00:45
and get top six again.
00:47
It's obviously, you know, the fans have now got a taste for it.
00:49
They're going to want to return there as well.
00:53
There has been a few signings going in.
00:55
There's been a few outgoings as well for Bristol.
00:59
So obviously, you know, Schruber's first summer in charge as well.
01:01
He wants to make sure the spine of the team is kept,
01:05
the core of the team is kept,
01:07
who did obviously manage to get Bristol all that way to the top six.
01:10
But he also wants to improve on it as well.
01:13
There'll be, you know, likely mainly undisclosed fees.
01:16
You know, focus will remain on balancing the budget
01:19
and, you know, promoting from within,
01:22
as Bristol City have done so well over the last,
01:25
you know, 10, you know, sort of decade really
01:27
in the championship.
01:29
So our correspondent, Dan,
01:31
Dan, just let us know about where Bristol City are
01:34
in this summer window,
01:36
how they are planning to go ahead of it
01:38
and where Gerhard Schruber sits
01:39
in terms of the decision-making
01:41
at Aislingate,
01:43
because it's obviously going to be a big summer
01:45
and they want to make sure
01:46
they are still competitive in the championship.
01:48
Well, Charles, recently we said that Gerhard Schruber
01:52
was probably Bristol City's biggest signing
01:54
of the summer
01:55
and that probably still stands to be correct,
01:57
or at least it will be
01:58
if Bristol City make a good start to the season
02:00
and hit the ground running.
02:01
But they have actually been busy again
02:04
in the transfer market.
02:05
They've brought in another signing
02:06
and that is Emile Roos Jacobson,
02:08
who was a striker at Preston North End.
02:11
In fact, he played for Preston against Bristol City
02:14
on the last day of last season
02:15
when Bristol City just about made it into the playoffs.
02:19
But he's also made very clear
02:20
that he was quite happy then to leave the club.
02:23
In fact, he wasn't probably going to sign a new contract
02:25
and so he needed an active suitor
02:27
and Bristol City have been the club to snap him up.
02:30
So, Bristol City now starting to make further moves
02:33
in the transfer market.
02:34
Of course, they've already brought in
02:35
the goalkeeper, Joe Lumley.
02:38
He was at Southampton
02:39
and having played in the Premier League as well,
02:42
he's looking to bring experience
02:44
from the top flight to Bristol City
02:46
and he says that he wants also
02:47
to have Premier League experiences
02:48
with Bristol City as well.
02:50
So, that's high ambition from Joe Lumley.
02:53
Bristol City, of course, as I mentioned
02:54
just a moment or so ago,
02:56
they were in the playoffs at the end of last season.
02:59
Yes, they took a bit of a hammering
03:00
against Sheffield United over two legs
03:02
in the semi-finals.
03:04
But having gained that experience
03:05
and with, of course,
03:07
having brought a player in like Joe Lumley
03:09
who has got that Premier League experience,
03:11
I think they'll use that as effectively as they can.
03:14
So, I think in terms of the transfer market
03:17
for Bristol City,
03:18
it's about bringing in players
03:18
who know the championship
03:20
but also have the ambition
03:21
to go one higher as well
03:23
and one better.
03:25
Certainly, that's the feeling with Joe Lumley.
03:27
You know, obviously,
03:27
I'm not saying no disrespect to Joe Lumley
03:30
but perhaps there could be more flash signings
03:32
out there
03:33
but it's solid
03:35
and he knows exactly what he wants
03:36
and he knows what he wants
03:37
from Bristol City.
03:38
And no matter what you think of him,
03:40
that's clearly what they're trying to build
03:42
at the club as well.
03:43
And, of course,
03:44
bringing in a player like Rhys Jacobson
03:46
who knows the championship well as well,
03:49
that will bode very well.
03:50
Sometimes they did lack
03:52
in their scoring last season
03:53
and although they created a lot of chances,
03:55
sometimes they failed to have someone
03:56
to put the ball in the back of the net
03:59
and someone who knows this league
04:00
and knows how it operates
04:01
in Rhys Jacobson
04:02
could well be the type of player they need
04:04
just to get more chances put away
04:07
and not squander so many
04:08
because, of course,
04:10
last season
04:10
they didn't take enough
04:11
and at times they conceded
04:12
too many goals too late as well.
04:14
So you'd like to think
04:14
that by bringing in a striker
04:15
who knows the championship,
04:17
if they take more chances
04:18
they don't necessarily have to worry
04:19
so much about conceding later on
04:21
because they could indeed be further ahead
04:23
if they continue to make
04:24
as many chances
04:25
as they did last season.
04:26
That, of course,
04:27
depends on the way
04:28
Gerhard Stuber gets them playing
04:29
because, of course,
04:30
Liam Manning is no longer the manager
04:31
whereas he was last season.
04:33
So, lots to think about
04:34
but Bristol City's certainly been more active
04:36
in the transfer market
04:37
bringing in a striker
04:38
something they probably needed
04:39
but I expect more to come through the door
04:41
at Ashton Gate
04:42
in the next few weeks.
