Daniel Wales looks at the latest Bristol City transfer news.
Transcript
00:01Now, for the new manager of Bristol City, Gerard Struber,
00:05he obviously begins his first summer in charge.
00:08Now, obviously, we spoke about the appointment
00:10and with foreign managers,
00:11Bristol City haven't had the best track record
00:13as of recent as well.
00:16So this is something that they have to get right.
00:18Obviously, Liam Manning took them to the playoffs
00:19for the first time in 17 years last season.
00:23And then suddenly he's now the Norwich City manager.
00:26So a lot to go on this summer in terms of Bristol City.
00:30Maybe Manning did leave because of the sort of lack of investment
00:33behind the ownership at Bristol City.
00:36So it is something that they have to get right
00:38in terms of moving forward
00:39and making them more sustainable in the second tier
00:42and, you know, trying to really, really push on
00:45and get top six again.
00:47It's obviously, you know, the fans have now got a taste for it.
00:49They're going to want to return there as well.
00:53There has been a few signings going in.
00:55There's been a few outgoings as well for Bristol.
00:59So obviously, you know, Schruber's first summer in charge as well.
01:01He wants to make sure the spine of the team is kept,
01:05the core of the team is kept,
01:07who did obviously manage to get Bristol all that way to the top six.
01:10But he also wants to improve on it as well.
01:13There'll be, you know, likely mainly undisclosed fees.
01:16You know, focus will remain on balancing the budget
01:19and, you know, promoting from within,
01:22as Bristol City have done so well over the last,
01:25you know, 10, you know, sort of decade really
01:27in the championship.
01:29So our correspondent, Dan,
01:31Dan, just let us know about where Bristol City are
01:34in this summer window,
01:36how they are planning to go ahead of it
01:38and where Gerhard Schruber sits
01:39in terms of the decision-making
01:41at Aislingate,
01:43because it's obviously going to be a big summer
01:45and they want to make sure
01:46they are still competitive in the championship.
01:48Well, Charles, recently we said that Gerhard Schruber
01:52was probably Bristol City's biggest signing
01:54of the summer
01:55and that probably still stands to be correct,
01:57or at least it will be
01:58if Bristol City make a good start to the season
02:00and hit the ground running.
02:01But they have actually been busy again
02:04in the transfer market.
02:05They've brought in another signing
02:06and that is Emile Roos Jacobson,
02:08who was a striker at Preston North End.
02:11In fact, he played for Preston against Bristol City
02:14on the last day of last season
02:15when Bristol City just about made it into the playoffs.
02:19But he's also made very clear
02:20that he was quite happy then to leave the club.
02:23In fact, he wasn't probably going to sign a new contract
02:25and so he needed an active suitor
02:27and Bristol City have been the club to snap him up.
02:30So, Bristol City now starting to make further moves
02:33in the transfer market.
02:34Of course, they've already brought in
02:35the goalkeeper, Joe Lumley.
02:38He was at Southampton
02:39and having played in the Premier League as well,
02:42he's looking to bring experience
02:44from the top flight to Bristol City
02:46and he says that he wants also
02:47to have Premier League experiences
02:48with Bristol City as well.
02:50So, that's high ambition from Joe Lumley.
02:53Bristol City, of course, as I mentioned
02:54just a moment or so ago,
02:56they were in the playoffs at the end of last season.
02:59Yes, they took a bit of a hammering
03:00against Sheffield United over two legs
03:02in the semi-finals.
03:04But having gained that experience
03:05and with, of course,
03:07having brought a player in like Joe Lumley
03:09who has got that Premier League experience,
03:11I think they'll use that as effectively as they can.
03:14So, I think in terms of the transfer market
03:17for Bristol City,
03:18it's about bringing in players
03:18who know the championship
03:20but also have the ambition
03:21to go one higher as well
03:23and one better.
03:25Certainly, that's the feeling with Joe Lumley.
03:27You know, obviously,
03:27I'm not saying no disrespect to Joe Lumley
03:30but perhaps there could be more flash signings
03:32out there
03:33but it's solid
03:35and he knows exactly what he wants
03:36and he knows what he wants
03:37from Bristol City.
03:38And no matter what you think of him,
03:40that's clearly what they're trying to build
03:42at the club as well.
03:43And, of course,
03:44bringing in a player like Rhys Jacobson
03:46who knows the championship well as well,
03:49that will bode very well.
03:50Sometimes they did lack
03:52in their scoring last season
03:53and although they created a lot of chances,
03:55sometimes they failed to have someone
03:56to put the ball in the back of the net
03:59and someone who knows this league
04:00and knows how it operates
04:01in Rhys Jacobson
04:02could well be the type of player they need
04:04just to get more chances put away
04:07and not squander so many
04:08because, of course,
04:10last season
04:10they didn't take enough
04:11and at times they conceded
04:12too many goals too late as well.
04:14So you'd like to think
04:14that by bringing in a striker
04:15who knows the championship,
04:17if they take more chances
04:18they don't necessarily have to worry
04:19so much about conceding later on
04:21because they could indeed be further ahead
04:23if they continue to make
04:24as many chances
04:25as they did last season.
04:26That, of course,
04:27depends on the way
04:28Gerhard Stuber gets them playing
04:29because, of course,
04:30Liam Manning is no longer the manager
04:31whereas he was last season.
04:33So, lots to think about
04:34but Bristol City's certainly been more active
04:36in the transfer market
04:37bringing in a striker
04:38something they probably needed
04:39but I expect more to come through the door
04:41at Ashton Gate
04:42in the next few weeks.
