00:00who very well could win his third MVP award next year.
00:05Are they a team that I would consider the favorite?
00:07No.
00:07Are they a contender?
00:09Yes.
00:10And let's remember a team that was in the middle of the pack this last year
00:13in the Eastern Conference that had depth and had great play at the top of their lineup,
00:17ended up in the finals.
00:18That's what the Bucs are dreaming of right now.
00:20Any team that has Giannis on it, you cannot count out.
00:22But the same could be said for a couple of other select stars in the league,
00:26including someone like, I don't know, Nikola Jokic.
00:28So let's go from the 2021 champs to the 2023 champions, the Denver Nuggets.
00:32They made the splash first.
00:34They traded away Michael Porter Jr. for Cam Johnson.
00:37You can see their numbers compared here.
00:39But Tim Legler, on the floor, how is this going to look?
00:43Here's how it fits, and here's how it helps Denver.
00:45And this is why I think it was an upgrade.
00:48Let's talk about, first of all, some of the action you're going to see right here.
00:50And, Malik, let me ask you a question.
00:52Do you know any other teams in the Western Conference that like to run a two-man game?
00:56There's a couple.
00:56What about Oklahoma City?
00:57And maybe the Denver Nuggets, right?
00:59Yeah.
00:59So this is that action right here.
01:01You're going to turn the corner.
01:02You're going to get a dive.
01:03What I want you to focus on is here.
01:05This is Cam Johnson on the weak side of the floor.
01:07He's got great instincts for this.
01:08And he's a very good off-the-movement shooter.
01:11As you see the defense right here collapse on the paint,
01:15watch Cam Johnson circle back behind the basketball to create that space.
01:21Very good off-the-move.
01:21And then, watch this, little pump fake, freezes him, sidestep, knocks it down.
01:26Does that at a high level.
01:27Perfect release.
01:28He also does this.
01:29You can run pin downs for him at a higher level than what you could Michael Porter.
01:33And you're going to see right here, a couple of screens are going to be set.
01:37Now, this is going to be a read.
01:38You've got a double screen coming off the corner.
01:40They're going to read their teammate in the corner and see what he wants to do.
01:43As you see right here, when this cut is made along the baseline,
01:47that tells now Cam Johnson he is going to circle back off this down screen
01:51and watch how quickly he gets to the three-point line,
01:54even against an all-league defender like Lou Dort.
01:57He doesn't need much time.
01:59It's a great read.
02:00Watch how quick those feet get together,
02:01how quickly that ball is out of his hands off the down screen.
02:04Now, how does it fit with Nikola Jokic?
02:06He's also an excellent weak side cutter.
02:09How does that play in?
02:09Well, pretty much any time Jokic has the ball in the post,
02:13he is surveying everything on the weak side of the floor,
02:16as you can see right here.
02:17He's looking at all these eyes on the weak side,
02:20and he's also looking at his teammate.
02:22Any sort of weak side cut, Nikola Jokic is going to find you.
02:26Cam Johnson is a very good weak side cutter.
02:29When their space, said it yesterday, I'm going to say it again,
02:32Cam Johnson is about to get the highest quality of shot he's ever gotten in his career
02:37because he's playing with Nikola Jokic.
02:38He's pulling a Beyonce, you're going to get an upgrade you type of situation.
02:42Thank you for painting that picture for us here, Legs.
02:45Really appreciate it.
02:45As we take a look here at the still available free agents,
02:48some notable free agent names that are still available here on the market.
02:52Of course, DeAndre Ayton at the top of this list as we're keeping monitoring that.
02:57But as we also look at some restricted free agents here,
03:00Jonathan Kaminga, Quentin Grimes come to mind.
03:03So now let's welcome in our reporter who spent a whole lot of time
03:06covering the Golden State Warriors last season.
03:08I mentioned Jonathan Kaminga here.
03:10What is the plan for him, Om, for the Golden State Warriors?
03:14Malika, it almost feels like we're in a little bit of a holding pattern
03:16because we have to wait and see what kind of market Jonathan Kaminga can get
03:20outside of Golden State.
03:22Can he find another team that will want him and then pay him
03:26and then also perhaps work out a sign and trade with Golden State?
03:29Or does he want to remain in Golden State?
03:31Does he want to take the qualifying offer and then maybe become a free agent next season
03:34and bet on himself?
03:36Those are all things we're going to see.
03:37Now, look, the Warriors, GM Mike Dunleavy Jr.
03:40has said, hopefully we get this done sooner than later.
03:42But it looks like they're going to wait.
03:44All league sources around the league are telling me
03:46they still hear Al Horford's name with the Warriors.
03:49They can do that before Kaminga.
03:51But as far as filling out the rest of the roster
03:53and what else Golden State can do,
03:55they're going to have to probably wait and see what Jonathan Kaminga does.
03:58All right.
03:58And a little bit of a holding pattern here.
04:00Om Young-Masuk, thank you so very much.
04:02As we head back to the desk here with our wonderful panel,
04:04I'm curious, Udonis, when you hear that we're in a little bit of a holding pattern
04:07for Jonathan Kaminga, what should Kaminga want here?
04:11He should want to go be his best version.
04:13And I don't think that's going to happen in Golden State.
04:15And it's nothing against Golden State.
04:16It's nothing against Kaminga.
04:17It's just not a good fit.
04:18And especially when you bring in a guy like Jimmy Butler.
04:20Jimmy Butler is a damn good basketball player.
04:23He needs the ball in his hands.
04:24He's going to make other guys better.
04:25He's going to defend on the other end.
04:26His basketball IQ is out of the roof.
04:29And I think that's where he gets the edge with Kaminga,
04:31where you put him in the game and you put him with Steph,
04:32you put him with those other guys, and you don't miss a beat.
04:35You put Kaminga in, and it's a little bit of a standstill offensively.
04:39He gets the ball in his hands.
04:40He wants to do his thing.
04:41So Jonathan Kaminga should look for a situation
04:44or an opportunity to be his best version.
04:46It is his time, and he should not feel bad about that at all.
04:49Because oftentimes we make guys feel bad about wanting to step into their light
04:52and be their best version.
04:53I don't think he should feel bad about this.
04:55He's played the game.
04:56He's been in Golden State long enough.
04:57This is a guy who's 15 points per game, 45% from the field.
05:00He's a damn good basketball player.
05:01It's his time to shine, and he wants his opportunity, and I don't blame him.
05:04What I'm hearing from different people is, like, where is he getting his money from?
05:09What has he proven?
05:11We've seen splashes.
05:13Yeah, we saw it when Steph went out in the playoffs last year.
05:16But not something consistent.
05:17One GM said, I think he needs to worry more about the fit than the money right now
05:23and take care of the money later with his play.
05:27So I'm hearing the Warriors are still optimistic that they're going to re-sign him.
05:32But if they re-sign him, maybe that's for a sign and trade.
05:34Another thing I'm hearing of the many teams that reached out to Damon Lillard,
05:41the Warriors were one of those teams.
05:44This is a guy that grew up going to games at Oracle Arena,
05:48sneaking in the media room, getting sodas.
05:51Grew up a Warriors fan.
05:54That's interesting.
05:56I know Kaminga's big, but, you know, hearing that the Warriors do have interest in Dame,
06:00I know that's very interesting to Bay Area people.
06:06Well, it wouldn't necessarily be an either-or, although that is interesting, Spears.
06:09If this isn't the worst market for restricted free agents in the last generation,
06:14I don't want to see it.
06:15There's just no money out there for a cap space.
06:19And sign and trades are very tough to pull out.
06:20I know that they happen routinely.
06:22We just saw one with Duncan Robinson, as a matter of fact.
06:24But they're very hard with restricted free agents
06:26because the team that has the rights isn't motivated to play ball.
06:30And so Kaminga is in a tough spot.
06:31Josh Giddey is in a tough spot.
06:33Quentin Grimes is in a tough spot.
06:34In these situations, what you tend to get is stalemates.
06:38And so what ends up, might end up happening,
06:39is the best thing for the Warriors is to retain Jonathan Kaminga,
06:42to use him as an asset later on in trade.
06:45The best thing for Jonathan Kaminga might be to do something similar,
06:48even if these two sides probably are primed for a breakup.
06:52Okay, so play this out for me, Lex.
06:53Yeah, listen, I think personally at this point,
06:55I think that the Warriors need Jonathan Kaminga more than he needs them.
06:59And here's what I mean by that.
07:00Where are the athletes on this team?
07:02He does represent an athletic wing.
07:04The guy does have something from a skill standpoint
07:07and just a physical standpoint they don't have on their roster.
07:10I understand he's got warts.
07:11I know that.
07:12They wish he was a little bit more locked in,
07:14like defensively with his concentration.
07:16They wish that he was more consistent with his rebounding effort.
07:20I get all of that.
07:21The guy has played almost 6,000 minutes for the Golden State Warriors,
07:24and he's still auditioning.
07:26I think at some point you've got to come to the realization
07:28it's not going to happen for him in Golden State,
07:31where he's going to break through.
07:32And guess what?
07:33It might not happen somewhere else either,
07:34but I think Jonathan Kaminga, to find out,
07:37I think he needs to go somewhere where he doesn't have such cynicism
07:40looking at him all the time,
07:41waiting for the bad habits to crop themselves
07:43so he can go back to the bench.
07:45That's what I mean by that.
07:46They need him.
07:47They need the physical specimen that he is.
07:49He needs a fresh start somewhere else
07:52to see what this guy can actually become in this league.
07:54And that's so well put when you're constantly saying,
07:56you know, this is who I am, this is who I am, this is who I am.
07:58If people don't want to believe you,
08:00then that at some point ends up on the team.
08:02Can we just, errr, real quick,
08:05Damian Lillard potentially getting calls for him
08:08from the Golden State Warriors?
08:10Udonis, does that address a need?
08:12As he should.
08:12You're talking to a hometown kid
08:14that took multiple pay cuts just to stay at the crib.
08:16As he should.
08:17As he has the opportunity to play at home,
08:19that's a lifelong dream for a lot of people.
08:21And at his point in his career,
08:23you want to have an opportunity to win a championship?
08:25You get a chance to play against Steph.
08:26I don't know if you win it,
08:27but you got a damn good opportunity
08:29when you play against Steph.
08:30I ain't never betting against a chef over there.
08:31So if he has the opportunity to start over
08:33and go play with chef?
08:35Two of the best three-point shooters of all time.
08:37At least take a look at it.
08:39Greatest range of any backcourt in the history.
08:41I can tell you that.
08:42They would put on a show.
08:43There's going to be a lot of switching on pick and roll.
08:45I don't want to be the one called up.
08:46You got that.
08:47Don't call me up.
08:48Not me, but you did say there were a dozen or so teams
08:51who were making these calls with Damian Lillard.
08:53He's going to take his time.
08:53Yep.
08:55But that has to be...
08:56But that's interesting to think about.
08:57I mean, you know, that's home.
09:00I have one point, and to piggyback off,
09:02you said it makes all the world to a basketball player
09:05when you feel wanted.
09:06I know we big.
09:07We got tattoos and we athletic.
09:09We sensitive.
09:10We want to feel wanted in the locker room
09:12and by the coaches and by that organization.
09:15And once you don't feel wanted as a basketball player,
09:17it's hard to go back.
09:18It's hard to go back mentally, as much as you might want to.
09:20It is hard to go back mentally
09:21when you don't feel wanted somewhere.
09:23This fan, his cousins are still Warriors fans.
09:25Oh, yeah.
09:26When you're from Oakland, that's how it is.
09:28Of course, your cousin's going to be worse.
09:28Just as our former NBA players over here,
09:31just so you guys know, you're always wanted here.
09:34Really, truly.
09:35Still to come on NBA Today,
09:36our marathon is going to roll on.
09:38We're going to check in on the Philadelphia 76ers.
09:40They've been awful quiet, Tim.
