00:22amendment number 2360. Mr. President, Senator from Louisiana. Mr. President, as you know,
00:34as we all know, many of our teachers in America come out of pocket to pay for school supplies.
00:46In 2002, what, 23 years ago, we allowed teachers to deduct $250 when they come out of pocket.
01:01My amendment would raise that deduction from $250 to $600. Teachers right now spend an average
01:13of $650 out of their own pocket. So we would allow them to deduct that instead of the amount
01:20we set in 2002. And I ask a favorable consideration, Mr. President, of my amendment. This will just
01:33let teachers break even for coming out of pocket.

01:41I wouldn't have much dispute of subsidizing the out-of-pocket expenses of our public school
01:47teachers. When I was a child, my dad, the mechanic, said, son, because we're so fortunate to live
01:54in America, if you go through the doors of that public school and you study hard, you can
01:58do just about anything. Although I'm certainly a lifetime fan of public education. But in addition
02:06to expanding this for public school teachers, it has a new policy of expanding it to homeschool
02:11teachers. Well, that's quite a new policy to put into a reconciliation bill that really should
02:17be in the education committee and debated and bring people to bear. I'm not immediately struck
02:23that that's a great idea. But certainly, as a new policy, it should go through committee. And for that reason,
02:32I think I'll do a point of order on this particular amendment.
