During debate on the Senate floor, Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) tore into the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Transcript
00:00Mr. President, I recognize the Senator from Washington.
00:04Mr. President, parliamentary inquiry.
00:07The Senator will state their inquiry.
00:09Are the remaining nine titles of the Senate substitutes scored by CBO using a current law 257 baseline?
00:17Yes.
00:18Mr. President.
00:20I recognize the Senator from Washington.
00:22Mr. President, I've been here a long time.
00:25Not only have I been the budget chair, I am the longest-serving Democrat on that committee.
00:32And in my 33 years here in the United States Senate, things have never, never worked this way where one party so egregiously ignores precedent, process, and the parliamentarian.
00:46And does that all in order to wipe away trillions of dollars of costs for a bill that could just be the most expensive legislation this body ever passes.
01:00Forget Senate procedure for a minute.
01:02Math, Mr. President, has never worked that way.
01:06I taught preschool.
01:07And I'll tell you, even our littlest kids knows the difference between a trillion and zero.
01:13It doesn't take a preschooler to tell you they're using magic math.
01:18Or that you can't just ignore the rules you don't like.
01:22How many times have my colleagues cried about the debt?
01:26How many times have they told me, I know you want to invest in child care, Patty, but we've got to get this budget under control.
01:34But now that it's tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, suddenly the budget doesn't matter anymore.
01:40Suddenly the rules do not matter anymore.
01:43Suddenly, a couple trillion goes away with a sprinkle of fairy dust.
01:49And bypassing the parliamentarian and president isn't really bypassing if you just close your eyes and just pretend real hard.
01:58Have you no shame?
01:59If you think you can look the American people in the face and tell them we have to bring down the debt after passing what might be the most expensive bill in history, if you think you can do that and then be taken seriously, well, you know what?
02:15If you believe that, maybe you are foolish enough to think that zero and a trillion are the same.
02:22Mr. President, I can't believe this is what we're doing today.
02:27Because I can tell you right now, if this happens, we will all laugh you out of the room because we have never seen anything like this.
02:36Not in my time here in the Senate.
02:38Not in my time on this planet.
02:40We are not going to let anyone forget that you're trashing the rules in order to pass this egregious bill.
02:48I yield the floor.
