00:00You know, we did not check to see if he had any interaction with firefighters.
00:10We do know that he did contact the firefighters when they came on scene, and there was a discussion.
00:21So we're still in the process of investigating that part of it.
00:30So I'm in the blue in the back.
00:32Sheriff, talk to me about, you know, why you're sharing this Instagram post.
00:37Talk to us, you know, what does it look like when you're looking at this, what it symbolizes
00:41to your project?
00:42Well, we're trying to collect any and all information, and those social media posts are what we call
00:48open source information.
00:49So this is all in an effort to find out intent, to find out if there was any other, if there
00:57was a motive or whatever the case may be.
00:59And another question, we had some people that lived in the area of the evacuation cell
01:04last night for a shelter in place.
01:06They say they didn't get a phone call, they didn't get a text.
01:08How does your system work?
01:09Was there a text that went out, or how did you let people?
01:13Yes, absolutely.
01:14Part of our Kootenai Alerts system, we sent out a text, I believe a five-mile radius.
01:20And I encourage people who live or frequent the area to sign up for Kootenai Alerts.
01:28So...
01:29But an opt-in service?
01:30Yes.
01:31Yep.
01:32The gentleman in the blue.
01:33Sure.
01:34So the health insurance that you guys initiated, were they done, given by a relative, or a
01:39parent called you to check on him, or were they concerned about mental health?
01:43No, it was generally a reporting party who called and saw a vehicle that was either
01:49parked near their property, or on their property.
01:54One was a restaurant where he appeared to be residing at.
01:58He was asked to leave and he complied.
02:01So none of them that we have at this time were called in from a relative.
02:06They were called in from a property owner or passerby.
02:12The gentleman there in the...
02:14Sheriff, can you describe the weapon that you found next to it?
02:18It appears right now we have a shotgun that was used, but we're still processing the scene.
02:25So obviously a shotgun is not a sniper weapon?
02:28Correct.
02:29Do you know what kind of weapon that was used?
02:32Well, we're still processing the scene, but let me kind of set the scene for everybody.
02:38When you're in a rural area and you're heavily treed, heavily brushed, and when you're taking
02:47fire, then it just adds a whole different dynamic to the situation.
02:53So what was reported by people on scene, by peace officers on scene, that they believed
03:00that they were taking sniper fire?
03:02Yes.
03:03Yes.
03:04And that's where that is.
03:06Lady in the black.
03:07Hi.
03:08Was he a suspect before you found him or did he not identify him until after his friends
03:14were made?
03:15Can you give me that first part again?
03:16Was he a suspect prior to finding his body or were you not sure what people after his friends
03:22were made?
03:23We had information that we had an idea who that person might be.
03:27But we always defer to the coroner's office to make sure that we have a positive identification
03:32on the individual.
03:35People borrow people's car.
03:37People use people's phones.
03:41Yeah.
03:42So we always want to make sure that we have a positive identification before we make any
03:47type of a release, so.
03:51This lady and I.
03:53Are you able to identify yet if Wes was the person who called 911?
04:00Still under investigation.
04:03If that is the case, he did not use his real name.
04:07So, but it certainly will be part of the investigation, but we had an individual called, a male, and
04:16he did not use the suspect's name, so.
04:18And one more question, because I think I misunderstood.
04:21Did you say there was an interaction with first responders?
04:25There was an interaction with the firefighters.
04:27When they first arrived on the scene?
04:29Correct.
04:30What was that?
04:31It had something to do with his vehicle being parked where it was.
04:35So yeah.
04:36The gentleman, the blue, in the back.
04:39Sure.
04:40Can you tell us what type of bullets that were used in the attack arms for free firefighters
04:52that's not being in the .
04:55Right.
04:56We know that some rifled slugs were used, and a rifled slug is a pretty big projectile.
05:08Anybody know off the top of their head how many grains a rifled slug is?
05:12I don't know.
05:14I don't know.
05:15Okay, just one ounce.
05:16Yeah.
05:17So generally going to be a one ounce piece of metal.
05:21But we also have some fragmentation of something.
05:24So, so it's still early on.
05:27We, we have some smaller projectiles, and we don't know if that was a fragmentation of
05:33one of the rifled slugs or another weapon.
05:38Like I said, we are still processing that scene.
05:41The firefighters are putting water on it.
05:45So we're still processing that.
05:47Yes, sir.
05:48Sheriff, can you tell us how sophisticated you think this ambush was?
05:51Or do you think this was an interaction that went back?
05:54And one more thing, we were just right outside the scene, and we saw a firefighting vehicle
05:59come down with three completely flat tires.
06:02Were slights used?
06:03Was that part of the ambush?
06:06No, part, part, part of, um, once the, the rounds started to exchange back and forth,
06:12and when deputies got on scene, part of the, the theory was we don't want him to be able
06:18to circle back around and get into either one of the fire trucks or his own vehicle.
06:24So, deputies disabled the, the trucks, and they pushed over the suspect vehicle off the
06:31side of the mountain.
06:32I mean, that just gives you a sense of how chaotic the moment was.
06:36Oh, yeah.
06:37Yeah.
06:38So the suspect is on scene and elusive, wouldn't be able to circle back and use it.
06:43Right.
06:44And we, we just don't, you know, we just don't know in many cases, even if it's in an urban
06:49setting and a retail shopping center, um, how many suspects there are.
06:54Because we're going to get different information and we have to be able to evaluate that information
07:00to see what's credible.
07:02We always want to err on the side of caution.
07:05But, uh, initial reports were what there were more than one suspect.
07:11Right here in the.
07:12I just, I just want to make sure I'm completely clear on this.
07:14So at the moment, as things stand as far as the weapons go, you were confident that he
07:19used the shotgun.
07:20It's possible that he used another weapon.
07:22You're not absolutely sure and you don't know what another weapon would be.
07:25Is that right?
07:26Yeah.
07:27Yeah, we're, we're still processing the scene.
07:29So we know that there was a shotgun used.
07:31Absolutely.
07:32100%.
07:33We know that for sure.
07:34So.
07:35I'm sorry.
07:36This is what we asked.
07:37Do you have like survivalist training or any type of equipment?
07:41We don't, we cannot find any evidence that he has had any type of survivalist training.
07:48Now he did grow up in a, uh, from what we understand, he did grow up in a, uh, artist family
08:01and that, uh, they climbed trees.
08:04And we did report, we did have reports that, uh, he was shooting at first responders via a tree.
08:12So he does have experience, uh, climbing trees.
08:16I also just wanted to clarify, um, you had said in the previous press conference, we were
08:21talking about misinformation.
08:22It's kind of going off the beaten path, but, um, can you elaborate a bit on what that misinformation
08:28was?
08:29I guess it, it felt like you had said families were finding out.
08:34Yeah.
08:35I wanted to clarify that.
08:36Yeah.
08:37So what happened, um, fire fighting and EMS channels here in, in Kootenay County are,
08:46um, are not, uh, what's the word I'm looking for?
08:50They're not encrypted.
08:51Yeah.
08:52Um, law enforcement channels are encrypted.
08:54So pretty quickly there was, uh, audio of the help call that came out and was broadcasted
09:04on social media.
09:05And that's, uh, that is just, uh, you know, really, really hard on the families.
09:13Uh, had they heard that, and I don't know if they did or didn't, but had they heard that,
09:18they would be able to identify their voice of their loved one and, um, just make a chaotic
09:25situation more chaotic.
09:27So, um, that's, that's one of the, I just want to be clear.
09:31None of the families were notified through social media.
09:34I don't, I don't know.
09:35I wasn't involved in that part of it.
09:36Yeah.
09:37I, I do not know.
09:38Lady in the black there.
09:39Sure.
09:40In terms of just the timeline, I know they provided us with one already, but where does
09:45that interaction, that first interaction with firefighters fit there?
09:50They have that interaction.
09:51How soon after that is there gunfire?
09:55There was an interaction.
09:56So they arrived on scene.
09:59Um, the initial call was about approximately 1.20.
10:04They arrived on scene.
10:06I would, I'm going to guesstimate, but I would say probably about 13.50 or about, uh, 10 minutes
10:13until 2 o'clock.
10:19Somebody, any, go ahead.
10:23Um, one question I have is you mentioned when you were doing welfare checks, what were those
10:26interactions like?
10:27Was the suspect just acting normal?
10:29Was there anything off about it at all during any of those interactions?
10:32Was there anything that stuck out for those?
10:34Yeah, you know, he cooperated on, uh, on each one.
10:37He, um, he was told that, hey, the owner is asking you to leave.
10:42He left.
10:43Um, there are certain criteria that we have to meet to be able to engage in somebody's, uh,
10:52uh, wellbeing, and, uh, he did not meet those, that requirements at the time.
10:57So, yeah.
11:01Jeremy?
11:02Um, just for your body, is, is it in a condition where we can determine if you're seeing drugs
11:07or medication?
11:08That'll, that'll be, uh, part of the, the autopsy, yes.
11:13Do you remind people of how long it was here in Idaho, and also just, um, I know this is like a
11:18popular recreation area, so how many people just have to be involved that may have been out there
11:22in the middle of this hiking areas?
11:24Well, it, it is a popular trail, um, as far as how many people actually, uh,
11:31Lieutenant Klinkifuss, do you have any idea of how many people might use the, it's like 25 miles
11:37of trail up there.
11:38Yes, sir.
11:39On a Sunday afternoon, there could be a couple hundred.
11:40citizens up there, uh, folks use dirt bikes up there at night, mountain bikes, e-bikes,
11:44very popular.
11:45I don't know exactly how many were there.
11:47At that moment, there could have been several hundred on the mountain at that time.
11:50Were they rescue?
11:51Were law enforcement helping rescue them all now?
11:54There, there were people that were still coming down the mountain, uh, and this is at,
11:58uh, approximately 15, 30 hours, or about 3.30 yesterday.
12:01So, people were still coming off of the mountain.
12:03Um, sir, did the Instagram photo that you, or the story that you saw,
12:09that you gave us, um, did, was his Instagram deleted?
12:14His social media has been wiped now, or is that by your doing, or, I mean, what was?
12:19Preliminary information is that, um, we, we believe it has been wiped, but we don't,
12:27we don't, we, but we don't know by who.
12:29Okay.
12:30Yeah.
12:31The lady in the rust color.
12:33Yeah.
12:34Are you coming, uh, what sort of role federal agencies played in the, in what played out
12:38yesterday?
12:39Would you have any issues without them, or?
12:42Yeah.
12:43Yeah.
12:44You're watching live now from Fox everyone, as, uh, we continue to, uh, really showcase,
12:48uh, the latest there, the developments coming from Idaho, but I do want to switch gears here.
12:53I do want to go live on the Senate floor.
12:55The Votorama continues.
12:57We do have a Senator Tillis speaking.
13:00Let's listen.
13:01Lifted me out of that situation into a high tech career, and now standing here before
13:07you in the U.S. Senate.
13:09This and several other amendments are amendments that are standing in the way of other people
13:14getting lifted out of that same trailer park.
13:16So, ladies and gentlemen, on our side of the aisle, and those over there, I hope you
13:19will join us, shout loudly, no.
13:22Thank you, Mr. President.
13:24The question is on the motion.
13:29All in favor, say aye.
13:31Aye.
13:32Opposed, no.
13:33Opposed, no.
13:34No.
13:35Nose appear to have it.
13:36Nose appear to have it.
13:37Nose do have it.
13:38Nose do have it.
13:39Motion is not agreed to.
13:40Motion is not agreed to.
13:46Senator from Arizona.
13:47Mr. President, I have a motion to commit at the desk.
13:50Clerk will report.
13:52The Senator from Arizona, Mr. Kelly, moves to commit the bill, H.R. 1, to the Committee
13:57on Finance with instructions.
14:00I ask that further reading of the motion be dispensed with.
14:04Without objection.
14:06Mr. President, I don't think we're looking to take any money out of Jelly Roll's pocket
14:12here.
14:13But giving a tax break to the richest people and most profitable corporations is a choice.
14:25And paying for it by kicking 17 million Americans off their health insurance is a choice.
14:33None of this is set in stone.
14:36Every one of us gets a vote here, a choice.
14:43We can help parents be able to take their kids to the doctor.
14:48We can keep seniors in their nursing homes.
14:52Or some rich guy, not Jelly Roll, can get another private jet.
15:01We can save health care for millions of Americans if we strip out tax giveaways for individuals
15:09making more than $100 million a year.
15:15Yes or no?
15:22Senator North Carolina.
15:23The reality is, let's fast forward now to 2017.
15:25I was in this chamber when we passed TCJA.
15:28And after we passed this, again, everybody was arguing this was all tax policy for the rich.
15:34But we unleashed an American economy that we have not seen in our history.
15:38In fact, it was better than the tax cuts of the Reagan era.
15:42Ladies and gentlemen, we need to get every bit of what we did in 2017 back on the books
15:49because people are not understanding the pro-growth nature of this tax policy.
15:54I hope my colleagues will vote loudly yes once again.
15:58No.
15:59No.
16:00Once again.
16:01Senator's time has expired.
16:06The question is on the motion.
16:09All in favor say aye.
16:10Aye.
16:12All opposed, nay.
16:13No.
16:14No.
16:15The no's appear to have it.
16:16The no's do have it.
16:17Clerk will report.
16:18The motion is not agreed to.
16:19The motion is not agreed to.
16:20Clerk will report.
16:21No.
16:22Clerk will not report.
16:24Senator from Connecticut.
16:28President, I have a motion to commit at the desk.
16:33Clerk will report.
16:35Senator from Connecticut.
16:36Mr. Murphy moves to commit the Bill H.R. 1 to the Committee on Finance of the Senate
16:40with instructions to report back the same to the Senate in three days, not counting.
16:46I'd ask that the further reading of the motion be dispensed with.
16:49Without objection.
16:50Mr. President, at the foundation of this bill is something very simple.
16:55The most massive transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in the history of the country.
17:01That's essentially what we're talking about here.
17:03That's really bad policy, but just as importantly, it is also deeply, deeply immoral.
17:09This bill is going to ruin people's lives.
17:12There are going to be moms who are going to watch their kids go hungry because of the cuts in SNAP.
17:17People are going to die when 17 million people lose their healthcare.
17:21And for what?
17:22To give an average quarter-million-dollar tax cut to the wealthiest families in America.
17:28We have tried to convince our colleagues to throw less people off their healthcare
17:32or to make the nutritional cuts a little bit easier to stomach, but they won't do it.
17:37So now we're just trying to address the other side of the immorality.
17:41This amendment would just say no tax cuts for people making over $500 million a year.
17:50If you are going to ruin people's lives by kicking them off their healthcare or cutting their food stamps,
17:55don't make the moral injury even worse by padding the pockets of the richest people in the country.
18:02Tax cuts for people making over $500 million a year
18:06while you throw 17 million people off their healthcare, yes or no.
18:11Senator North Carolina.
18:14Mr. President, I'm guessing, well, they're probably focused a little bit less on me
18:19because I made an announcement this weekend.
18:21But you can already tell that this narrative is about how we're all about the wealthy.
18:27And I've already stipulated I have concerns with the Medicaid bill.
18:30You all know where I am on that.
18:32But we're talking about the tax bill.
18:35And there is nothing in this tax bill that I think that falls short of extraordinary opportunity
18:42for economic growth that lifts up the very people that I grew up with.
18:47And for that reason, once again, I hope you will vote loudly no.
18:53The question is on the motion.
18:55All in favor say aye.
18:56Aye.
18:57All opposed, no.
18:58No.
18:59The no's appear to have it.
19:01The no's do have it.
19:02The motion is not agreed to.
19:04Mr. President.
19:05Senator from Maine.
19:07Mr. President, first, I want to respond.
19:11We can solve this problem and solve the problem of people in trailer parks by limiting the tax
19:18cuts to people making $400,000 a year and less.
19:21That would cut the cost of this bill by 60%.
19:24It would also obviate the necessity of kicking people, 17 million people off of healthcare and
19:30thousands and thousands of young people and people across the country from SNAP.
19:35You can do this and give tax relief to the middle class without the unnecessary tax relief in this bill
19:42that goes to the richest people in our country.
19:44So my amendment is really simple.
19:46If you think people making a billion dollars a year need and deserve a tax break,
19:51and also if you want to give a really good ad to these guys in November of 2026,
19:57vote no on the amendment and say that billionaires, no, not billionaires,
20:02people earning a billion dollars need and deserve a tax break.
20:07I urge a yes vote.
20:08Mr. President.
20:11Does the Senator wish to call up his motion?
20:13I have a motion to commit at the desk.
20:15Quick report.
20:16The Senator from Maine, Mr. King, moves to commit the bill H.R. 1 to the community.
20:20I ask that further reading of the motion be dispensed with.
20:23Without objection.
20:24Mr. President.
20:25Senator from North Carolina.
20:26Mr. President, in truth, you can see this sort of upping of the ante.
20:31These are the gimmicks that we play when we want to get a show vote,
20:37especially with somebody who may be running for reelection, for reelection.
20:42We know that this isn't going to materially change things.
20:45Now, my friend from Maine knows where I am on health care, and I hope that we get things fixed.
20:51But this exercise, by virtue of it being a voice vote, tells you all you need to know about this process.
20:59And for that reason, I would suggest just one more loud no vote.
21:04Questions on the motion.
21:05All in favor say aye.
21:06Aye.
21:07All opposed, no.
21:08The Nose appear to have it.
21:09The Nose do have it.
21:10The motion is not agreed to.
21:11Mr. President.
21:12The Nose appear to have it.
21:13The Nose appear to have it.
21:14The Nose do have it.
21:15The motion is not agreed to.
21:19Mr. President.
21:21Senator from California.
21:22I have a motion to commit at the desk.
21:25Clerk report.
21:27Senator from California.
21:28Mr. Padilla moves to commit the Bill H.R. 1 to the Committee on Finance of the Senate.
21:32I ask that further reading of the motion be dispensed with.
21:35Without objection.
21:37Colleagues on the other side of the aisle, I know that you take great pleasure in criticizing
21:44the federal deficit under Democratic administrations.
21:49But the numbers don't lie.
21:51The biggest driver of the ballooning national debt has been Republican tax cuts for the wealthy
22:00and large corporations.
22:03And despite the parliamentary gymnastics that are being played here, our Republican colleagues
22:09know that this bill is adding an additional $3.5 trillion to the deficit over the next 10 years.
22:18Why else would they have included a piece of the bill to raise the debt limit by $5 trillion
22:28if this bill saved money as they claim?
