00:00It was an unthinkable event that left many shocked and devastated in the aftermath.
00:16Two misguided teenagers set to wreak havoc on hundreds of innocent students at their
00:20high school.
00:22But what were their true motives behind the madness and cruel intentions?
00:27Let's take a look back at the infamous Columbine incident and find out what actually happened.
00:34Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris had what would be considered a typical middle-class childhood.
00:40They both were able to make friends, played sports, and even grew up with both parents
00:45in the household.
00:47The boys would first cross paths in middle school during the seventh grade.
00:52The two shared a number of similarities, and developed a deep connection with one another.
00:58As they entered their teenage years, they would attend Columbine High School.
01:03Eric and Dylan were basically an inseparable duo.
01:07The two even began working together at a local pizza place.
01:11When they weren't working, the two could be found doing all sorts of things with one another.
01:17But somewhere along the way, a more sinister side of the teens started to emerge.
01:22Much of their free time was spent on their computers, playing violent video games like Doom.
01:43Aside from gaming, they also engaged in a number of delinquent affairs, which they referred to as rebel missions.
01:50Eric even created his very own personal blog, where he would post about the troubling behavior.
01:57Other entries made on the blog involved long passages about their hatred for society and their murderous fantasies.
02:04During one of their rebel missions, the police would catch the boys breaking into a car as they attempted to steal computer equipment.
02:12They both were arrested, and pled guilty to felony theft.
02:16The judge ordered them to participate in a program for troubled youth.
02:21While this should have been a wake-up call for the teenagers and their parents, it apparently
02:25wasn't.
02:27More explicit dark fantasies would be written in their personal journals, and also posted
02:31to their blog.
02:33The violent themes also began to surface in their school projects, and class assignments.
02:39Now writing short stories about Charles Manson, poems written about bullets, and other class
02:45work centered around guns in school.
02:48The pair were also enrolled in video production classes, and they would make multiple videos
02:53focused on violence.
02:55Producing short films of themselves dressed up in trench coats, and unleashing havoc on anyone
03:00that stood in their way.
03:02The warning signs were on full display.
03:06Soon the teenagers would put the wheels in motion.
03:09And turn their graphic art films into reality.
03:14While Eric and Dylan were too young to purchase guns themselves, they were able to convince their
03:18older friends to do so on their behalf.
03:22The duo now had shotguns and handguns in their possession.
03:26In addition to the firearms, the boys had used the interwebs to extensively research homemade
03:31explosives.
03:33The troubled high school teens had planned a horrific massacre.
03:37On a Tuesday morning, two backpacks filled with homemade bombs were placed in a remote field
03:44about three miles from their school.
03:47The intent was to create a fiery diversion when detonated, to lure emergency services away
03:52from their primary target.
03:55Klebold and Harris then would head to their school and place additional bags filled with
03:59explosives in the cafeteria.
04:02The lunchroom holds about 400 students and the bombs were rigged to blow during the first
04:06lunch period.
04:09After arranging the bags, they went back to their cars to wait for an explosion.
04:14Both of their cars were also rigged to blow, for the purpose of creating more chaos.
04:19The very first part of their plan worked as the explosives dumped in the field created a small
04:24fire.
04:26It alerted emergency vehicles away from the school as they expected.
04:31After waiting several minutes in their cars for the cafeteria bombs to go off.
04:36Nothing happened.
04:38The boys then resorted to Plan B of their treacherous scheme.
04:42Fully armed with an assortment of weapons, and another bag full of explosives, they headed
04:47toward the school entrance.
04:50Along their way Eric and Dylan tossed pipe bombs in the parking area.
04:54Some students assumed the boys were playing some sort of senior prank.
04:59Others saw they were up to no good, and ran away in a hurry.
05:03The teenagers dressed in trench coats like worn in their short films, proceeded to enter the
05:08school to eliminate the students one by one.
05:11They began opening fire on several students in the hallways, while making devious remarks.
05:17Shortly after the chaos started, the police were made aware of the horrific happenings,
05:22and quickly arrived on the scene.
05:24A brief gunfight then took place between the boys and the officers.
05:30The gunfire kept the police at bay, allowing Klebold and Harris to advance to the other parts
05:35of the school.
05:37The pair went to the library, where they assumed more students would be hiding.
05:42They first sought out jerks in the room, instructing them to come forward.
05:46The boys began tormenting the frightened teens, and confessing their disdain for them all.
05:52They proceeded to check around for students hiding in the room.
05:56When they found some students, they would open fire.
06:00While in the library, Klebold and Harris killed twelve people, and badly injured ten.
06:06The two then left the library, and made more rounds throughout the school.
06:11They began checking classrooms for other students, and tossing more pipe bombs down the halls.
06:17To their surprise most students had already managed to evacuate the building, during their
06:22attack in the library.
06:24Now unable to find more potential victims in the school, the misguided teenagers decided
06:30to go back to the library, where they concluded their horrific plan.
06:35Harris and Klebold shot themselves as their final act, ending the morning of terror.
06:40The Columbine massacre resulted in over twenty injured, and twelve dead.
06:45After the shocking event took place, the school was shut down for the following three weeks.
06:52After the incident, many of the survivors that were in attendance suffered from PTSD.
06:57And more fear was instilled in students nationwide after what transpired.
07:02Some schools implemented stricter security measures, such as checking bags and installing metal
07:08detectors.
07:09Unfortunately, more incidents have taken place over the years, causing more concerns for
07:14parents and students.
