00:00It was a rather unusual incident that led to an innocent man losing his life in his
00:13own home.
00:14An officer would face severe punishment and her morals would be put in question, but was
00:19it justified?
00:21Let's take a look back at the interesting story of female police officer Amber Geiger
00:27and find out what actually happened.
00:30Being a police officer is often considered one of the hardest jobs in the world.
00:35The position requires a high level of mental fortitude under stressful situations.
00:41At any point danger can erupt, and quick decisions have to be made.
00:46Unfortunately, in some extreme cases the wrong action is taken, and dire consequences are
00:51the results.
00:53And this unusual situation would be a prime example of how quickly things can turn sour.
00:59Amber Geiger at the age of 30 had been on the Dallas police force for nearly five years.
01:05She decided to move closer to the station for an easier commute once her lease was up.
01:11After searching around for a bit, she found a one-bedroom apartment merely two blocks away
01:15from her job.
01:17It was a large four-storey complex called the Southside Flats.
01:22The building had over 250 units.
01:26Amber would reside on the third floor in apartment 1378.
01:31The layout and design of the apartments within the complex were basically identical to one
01:35another.
01:37For the first two months, things seemed to be going quite well for Amber in her new residence.
01:43Now living only two blocks away from her station, she had more time to spend enjoying herself.
01:49However, the change of scenery wouldn't turn out to be such a good thing for Geiger.
01:55After working a long 13-hour shift, which consisted of three arrests during the day, Geiger would
02:01head home a little after nine o'clock in the evening.
02:05On the drive back, she would engage in a personal call with an officer, whom she was romantically
02:10involved with.
02:12Geiger possibly tired and distracted with her conversation would enter the apartment complex's
02:17parking garage.
02:19She drove past the third floor and parked on the fourth, which was the level above her home.
02:26The floor plans being the same.
02:29Geiger made it to door 1478.
02:31It was one digit off from her 1378 unit.
02:35The doors in the building operated with an electronic key device.
02:39One would just have to insert an indistinguishable fob to be granted access.
02:44As she attempted to make her way inside the wrong apartment, she noticed the door wasn't
02:48completely shut.
02:50Now concerned and suspicious about the door being ajar.
02:55She walked in to see an African-American man occupying the living quarters.
02:59The armed Geiger would make the worst decision of her life.
03:07Following the tragic encounter that left two gunshots in the chest of the victim, Geiger
03:12would call 911 and report the incident.
03:16What's going on?
03:18I'm an officer.
03:19The officer, I thought it was in my apartment and I shot a guy thinking that he was thinking
03:23it was my apartment.
03:24You shot someone?
03:25Yes.
03:26I thought it was my apartment.
03:28I'm fucked.
03:29Oh my God.
03:30I'm sorry.
03:31Okay.
03:32And where are you at right now?
03:35I'm in...
03:36What do you mean?
03:37I'm inside the apartment with him.
03:38Hey, come on.
03:39What's your name?
03:40I'm Amber Geiger.
03:41I need to get me.
03:42I'm...
03:43I'm in...
03:44Okay, we have help on the way.
03:45I know, but I'm...
03:46I'm gonna lose my job.
03:49Once police arrived on the scene, their body cam would film what happened next.
03:56The victim 26-year-old Botham Jean was rushed to the hospital in an attempt to save his life.
04:25But unfortunately, Jean was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
04:30Days later following the incident, Geiger would be charged with manslaughter.
04:35She was released on Bonn and put on paid administrative leave from her job.
04:40As the racial climate and social justice tension was at an all-time high in America.
04:46When the story broke, the lesser charge of manslaughter instead of murder for Geiger
04:51would create a great deal of outrage among the African-American community.
04:56Many of which believe police officers aren't held accountable for their actions, especially
05:00when it comes to minorities.
05:03When it came time for the trial of Amber.
05:06In the courtroom more details were revealed about the night, and also who Amber was as
05:10an officer and person.
05:11Since I knew somebody was moving around inside my apartment, I wanted just to find that threat.
05:20What were you feeling?
05:21They were scared as crap.
05:23As the door opened, did you see anything in your apartment?
05:29Yes, I did.
05:30Yes, I did.
05:31That's when I heard directly in the middle towards the window is when I saw the silhouette
05:35Beiger standing back there.
05:36The state of Texas does absolutely find it unreasonable that a trained five-year veteran
05:44of the Dallas Police Department could go into the wrong apartment and shoot an unarmed man
05:50who is doing absolutely nothing wrong in the chest.
05:55The state of Texas finds it absolutely unreasonable that a person could do something like that
06:02and just say, whoops, my bad, and then go on about her life however she chooses to do it.
06:11Yes, the state of Texas finds that premise to be unreasonable.
06:17In fact, we find that premise to be unjust and unacceptable and insulting.
06:24After the week-long trial, the jury had heard enough information to finally have a verdict.
06:30We the jury unanimously find the defendant, Amber Geiger, guilty of murder as charged in
06:37the indictment.
06:38She was sentenced to serve 10 years in state prison.
06:42After serving five years of incarceration, she was denied parole in 2024.
06:46Her next hearing for an early release is in 2026.
06:52What do you think about this story?
06:55Was the punishment too harsh or was 10 years justified?
06:59Or do you even think the sentence was too short for the deadly negligence?
