00:00Our mental life begins at the beginning of our life.
00:03Our earliest memories are the first time we use language,
00:06the first time we have an idea,
00:07the first time we think about something that's not in front of us.
00:10These things are all related to the development of the prefrontal cortex,
00:14which is the part of the brain that makes us human.
00:16It's responsible for things like decision-making, planning, language, reasoning,
00:22and it starts to develop in the womb during the second trimester.
00:25As the prefrontal cortex develops,
00:27we start to have these little mental experiences that we can remember,
00:31and they're not just memories of things that happened to us.
00:33They're memories of things that we created in our mind,
00:36and this is the basis of our mental life.
