Heights of Abraham: ‘We bought the most unusual business, a place with woods, caves, and a house - and transformed it into an underground overground tourist attraction’
00:00It's quite a walk up to the tops of the Heights of Abraham, but back in the Victorian days, they found a solution in donkeys.
00:09That was until 50 years ago when the Pew family took over and came up with a revolutionary idea to not only revive the whole resort,
00:22but to have cable cars travelling people from down at the bottom at Matlock Bath up to the Heights of Abraham, part of the experience of the Pleasure Ground itself.
00:35Once you do reach the top, you're met with idyllic views, waterfalls, the Victoria Prospect Tower and also a chance to head down into the mines.
00:47This area was popular with lead mining. That was before lead was widely imported.
00:56And then the former miners transformed this place into a tourist attraction.
01:02And still today, people come on tours down the mine and explore some of the past of the Heights of Abraham.
01:11It really is an underground, overground attraction nowadays, with stunning views from the top of Masson Hill,
01:21overlooking Matlock Bath, the castle and the whole estate, as well as stunning houses.
01:27Honestly, it may be just over half an hour's drive from Yorkshire, but this is a spectacular place to visit.
01:38Here, Matlock Bath in Derbyshire.
01:42And don't forget to head up high, not just on the cable cars, but the Victoria Prospect Tower, named after the Queen.
01:50But instead, there'll be nothing unusual to visit.
