00:00You received my instruction in your dressing room.
00:02You received my instructions at Provesciare.
00:04Respect my instruction all the time.
00:06We respect my instructions all the time.
00:08Protect yourself at all times.
00:09We protect yourself all the time.
00:10Touch the double gaze.
00:14Here we take a look at the tail a little tight
00:16for the co-main event between Stephen Butler and Jose Macias.
00:19Stephen Butler is a veteran but still only 29 years of age.
00:22Macias is a veteran who seems sometimes a little bit older than 33.
00:26When you think about the length of time he's been around
00:28as we begin round one in a fight that Stephen Butler
00:31wasn't necessarily expecting as he eats a big left hook.
00:35And it's the rematch that he never thought would happen,
00:38but it's a gift of an opportunity.
00:40So, Matt, let's see what he does with it.
00:42Well, Macias, really, what an interesting strategy
00:44to go right away, lead the fight with a lead left hook.
00:47The punch has knocked Butler out of their first fight.
00:49Yes.
00:50And Butler ate it better this time, of course,
00:51but still got a little bit surprised with that shot.
00:54Yeah, and here you see Butler already looking for that home run.
01:02Now, for the folks that have seen the first fight between Macias and Butler,
01:05Butler was outboxing Macias for four and a half rounds
01:09and really did a good job of keeping his composure
01:12when Macias would try to invite him to Raw.
01:15And then he just got caught with an overhand right
01:17and followed up with a left hook, and then that was the end of the fight.
01:20The other important aspect of this fight is Butler is now fighting
01:22at super middleweight for the first time in his career.
01:25He had been at middleweight for 11 years.
01:28It's a little bit unheard of at this day and age in boxing.
01:30Yeah, and you can see it on Butler, though, like the muscle mass.
01:33He's bigger, but it's not fat.
01:35He still looks solid and athletic.
01:37And the question always for a guy like Butler, who's a power puncher,
01:41does that power come with him to the 168-pound division
01:44as he rips an uppercut to Macias?
01:47Butler always has an excellent jab, and he has to use it to lead to this attack
01:50and protect him as well defensively from some of these counter shots.
01:53He wants to end this fight by knockout.
01:54He was very straightforward all week about that,
01:56but you've got to be careful against a power puncher like Macias.
01:59Yeah, and he's also facing the same sort of dilemma
02:02that Christopher Guerrero faced in that Macias has 13 losses, 12 of them by decision.
02:07So this is a guy that knows how he takes a good punch.
02:10He also knows how not to take the full impact of your power punches,
02:14which is how he lasts so long in all these fights.
02:16Macias is also crafty where sometimes you think he's out of the fight
02:19and he comes out of nowhere with a second win.
02:21Well, that's what his fight with Eric Basinian was like two years ago.
02:24He had Eric Basinian wobble as Butler lets loose with another straight right hand.
02:29And if you remember, my math isn't good,
02:32it was probably four fights ago for Steve Butler when he was in a 50-50 fight
02:35on paper with Steven Rolls and ended that fight quickly, expeditiously,
02:40with one straight right hand.
02:41So Steven Butler, as long as he's been in the game,
02:44his calling card has always been that power.
02:46And as far as we know, he still has it.
02:47We'll see if he carries it to 168.
02:49As Macias tries to bang Butler's body with that long right hand,
02:53and Butler returns a favor, right hand to the belly button.
02:56And both men have blended some good, solid shots here in the first round.
02:59And there's Butler with a one-two.
03:03And coming back to that jab.
03:06And again, Butler's problem in the first fight wasn't technique,
03:09wasn't his ability to box.
03:11He was outboxing, Macias.
03:13And, uh, ate two big punches and couldn't come back.
03:15He walked into a jab there.
03:19Butler, two more stiff jabs.
03:21Big right hand to punctuate the end of his first round.
03:23A huge right hand straight to the glove, to the forehead.
03:29Opposite de Jesus Macias.
03:35All right, Morgan, let's see if you agree with me or not,
03:38but some of the keys to victory.
03:39Start combinations with the jab.
03:41If you're Steven Butler, he did that well in the first round.
03:43Watch out for Macias' hook.
03:44He felt it right away.
03:46Don't force a knockout.
03:47Macias could capitalize on Butler's mistakes,
03:49as he did in the first fight.
03:50I think the fight, if it's at closer range,
03:52is in favor of Macias.
03:53And I said to test him early in the fight,
03:55he did, so in the opening seconds,
03:56let's see if he can continue with some output early on.
03:59Yeah.
04:00When you think about Macias' fight,
04:01even with Eric Bazinian,
04:02the moments that he had successors were at close range,
04:05and he managed to walk Bazinian into these overhand rights.
04:08And Macias was the guy who was coming up from middleweight,
04:11junior middleweight,
04:12but he still hit hard enough to get Eric Bazinian's attention.
04:15So even that first knockout against Steven Butler,
04:17it was a surprise, but it was not a fluke.
04:19Macias does hit hard.
04:21The other aspect, Morgan, is Butler always wants to fight.
04:36Even though he has the skill level to be a complete boxer,
04:40his mindset is to fight.
04:42And that is the thing about Steven Butler,
04:45and that's who he is for better or for worse.
04:48Right.
04:49But he is a very good boxer when he commits to it.
04:52And again, that first fight with Macias,
04:54for the most part,
04:55he managed to avoid getting suckered into a brawl
04:57because he was winning the boxing match.
04:59But even you see it here, he throws that jab,
05:01he can box, but the boxing is mainly to set up that big right hand.
05:06Bang-bang is his nickname. It's also his attitude.
05:11It's his way of being.
05:14And here they are.
05:15What you said is Macias' range,
05:17forehead to forehead, glove to glove.
05:19This is sort of a big left hook again.
05:21Butler takes it well,
05:22but I don't know how many of those he wants to take tonight.
05:24No, I think he's playing with fire.
05:25He stays at that range with the right hand a little bit lower
05:29than his chin like this at the chest level.
05:31And get it.
05:34But Macias' leading with it this time,
05:36and it puts Butler sort of in reverse gear.
05:39See, this is where Butler now is abandoning the job.
05:41Yes.
05:42That's where he gets into trouble,
05:43that brawler mentality.
05:45Yeah, it's an instinct, I think.
05:48It's a part of his personality.
05:51When he gets hit hard, he wants to get hit hard back.
05:54There's Butler with an uppercut on the inside.
05:59Using his forearm to get a little more space
06:01because, again, he doesn't want to be at close range.
06:03There he is jabbing Macias,
06:04as Macias is trying to load up for that hook.
06:06Smart move from Butler, left hook to the body.
06:11Each punch from both Macias and Butler
06:13thrown with bad intentions tonight.
06:14Absolutely.
06:15You got to figure out Macias because he's not overly muscular.
06:18He's an unimposing-looking person.
06:20He's a regular-sized guy.
06:21Correct.
06:22But he gets tremendous leverage on those punches,
06:24especially that left hook.
06:25He's technically solid.
06:27Yes.
06:28You can tell a lot of the experience,
06:30the pedigree of having a lot of big fights.
06:33And Macias is a guy who also came up in La Salta, Mexico,
06:38which is in Guadalajara, same state, same province as Jalisco.
06:41Came up with the Alvarez brothers.
06:43Sparred with Canelo.
06:44He's trained with Rigoberto back in Guadalajara.
06:47When he retires from boxing,
06:49which Macias says is going to be after tonight,
06:52he says he's going to go and work with her
06:55to go back to Alvarez training fighters.
07:00There you see Macias with a big left hook,
07:04right hand to the body.
07:05Comes back with the right hand to the body.
07:07Butler answers with that straight right hand
07:09to the forehead.
07:11It's a little warning for following it up with the elbow.
07:13Well-timed jab, Macias.
07:17Big one-two from Butler and another.
07:20But again, you see those big right hands
07:22are not landing as flush as Butler would like.
07:25But that's sort of Macias' superpower.
07:27Big right hand by Macias there.
07:29Yes.
07:30I think he's won this round overall
07:32with a few better power shots.
07:34Butler comes back with the left hook,
07:35but then there's Macias with the left hook,
07:37a jab, and then a bit of a stare down for Steve Butler.
07:40Iceman John Scully has been the trainer for Butler
07:44for a few fights now.
07:45Interested to see what he says.
07:47When you stay with the jab, it's an easy fight.
07:48The only time you give him a chance
07:51is when you stay in there and you don't do anything.
07:52If you're going to stay in there,
07:53you've got to step to the left.
07:55You have to step in there and you don't do anything.
07:56If you're going to stay there,
07:57you've got to step to the left.
07:58When you stay with the jab, it's an easy fight.
08:01The only time you give him a chance is when you stay in there and you don't do anything.
08:06If you're going to stay in there, you've got to step to the left.
08:09You have to step to the left.
08:13You have to be with the angle to talk about that.
08:17If you do that, he cannot touch you.
08:19See that big hook by Macias.
08:21This is why you're hearing Scully say, step to your left, avoid that hook shot,
08:24which is usually maybe the opposite against an orthodox fighter,
08:28but in this case, Macias' left hook is more dangerous than his right hand.
08:30Yes.
08:31And, sorry, Matt, you hear John Scully saying the same thing you said.
08:36If you stick to the jab, it's an easy fight.
08:38I don't know, easy is a relative term.
08:40Right, of course.
08:41But it's a less difficult fight.
08:43That's the part with Butler.
08:44Always, you know, the boxing ability is there,
08:46but his mindset of wanting to engage in fighting can lead him to trouble
08:49because he's been wobble in the past.
08:52Then you see Butler getting under Macias' left hook,
08:54so there's, you know, if you're Team Butler, it's a sign of hope.
08:57He's not just going to sit there and take them all night.
08:59He got under one, he just stepped back from that other one.
09:02You know, if he can make it hard for Macias to land that left hook,
09:05he can make, he opens up a lot more possibilities for himself.
09:13And there's Butler again.
09:15Touching with the jab.
09:16Little stab jab to the body.
09:18You see how good on pins and needles the crowd is,
09:23because you have a feeling that this could really quite could change
09:26one of the two men's hands accurately.
09:28They have that power.
09:31And you saw Macias right there.
09:34He tried to roll that right hand from Butler
09:38and counter with the right hand of his own.
09:39Again, you said bad intentions.
09:43He just missed with it.
09:45Comes back to the body.
09:49This rematch only happened on a few weeks' notice.
09:52Butler was all in of wanting to avenge his only loss
09:54when he's been preparing since the month of March,
09:56even a little bit before for Vazinian's fight
09:58that got postponed twice now.
09:59Yeah, and that's a shame for Butler and Vazinian
10:04and for this local market.
10:05You know, that's going to be a big fight,
10:07two guys from Montreal,
10:08two guys with deep followings in Montreal squaring off.
10:12But again, this is the next best thing for Butler,
10:14a chance to avenge a loss that he feels
10:16that he shouldn't have taken.
10:18No excuses for that loss,
10:19but he feels he's a superior fighter to Jose Macias.
10:22And at this range, the body shot, jabs,
10:25very effective for Butler.
10:27Yeah, it's a little of a new wrinkle
10:29that he's introduced in this round.
10:31And you see that it's making Macias think twice
10:32about what he's doing.
10:35Macias is always trying to find a way
10:36to catch Butler a little bit,
10:40maybe not as alerted,
10:42try to surprise him with that big left hook.
10:44Yeah, and right there,
10:46he switched it up a little bit.
10:46Macias tried to push that hybrid hook uppercut
10:49between Butler's gloves.
10:51It didn't quite land.
10:53That's the thing with Macias.
10:54You can never count him out.
10:55He's got a good ring IQ with all that experience.
10:57And like you said, he wants to be a trainer.
10:59He has this idea in mind,
11:03and sometimes even when your opponent,
11:06in this case, Butler thinks he's having
11:07a lot of success, you'd be surprised.
11:08Yeah, it's, you know,
11:09you can look at Macias' record.
11:11There, Macias, leading back,
11:14landing that counter right,
11:16landing another right uppercut to Butler's chin.
11:18Butler back with a crisp one-two.
11:25And I don't know how you're scoring this match,
11:26but again, Macias is very much in this fight.
11:28Yeah, I had it even after two rounds.
11:30I think Butler's doing relatively well at this round.
11:33Yeah.
11:33Right hand there.
11:34He snuck that right hand in
11:35straight over the top of Macias' jab.
11:37Right uppercut did some damage, man.
11:40And Butler senses it.
11:42Macias is a hard guy to hurt,
11:43but he's in retreat right now.
11:44Oh, a little bit of action right at the bell.
11:48Good end of round for Stephen Butler.
11:55El doble jab y la izquierda y la derecha, perdón.
12:00¿Estás mocos?
12:01¿Estás mocos, no?
12:25See, you hear that right hand?
12:26Yes.
12:26After that lazy jab of Macias,
12:28Macias starts to come back
12:29with an uppercut of his own.
12:32This is the shot.
12:33Boom.
12:33Straight right, kind of surprised Macias.
12:36Didn't react well.
12:36I think an uppercut followed up
12:38a few seconds later.
12:39Butler ends with a fury.
12:41Right at the bell.
12:42Referee Martin Farré intervenes.
12:44And we're into rounds four
13:05of this 10-round fight
13:06that's scheduled for 10.
13:07Can't call it a 10-round fight,
13:08but not with these two.
13:12Again, it opens a little bit more
13:14at Butler's range.
13:15Butler doesn't want to be
13:15all the way in close.
13:18That's where Macias would prefer to be.
13:20Oh, big uppercut.
13:21With a huge uppercut.
13:22I don't know how well it connected,
13:23but again, the attention for this.
13:28There's Macias landing that left hook.
13:29Butler took it well,
13:30but again, Butler doesn't want
13:31to take those all night.
13:32But at this range,
13:33he's going to take more of them.
13:38Macias is an interesting guy, Matt.
13:39He, in previous years,
13:41would spend half the year in Canada.
13:42He lived in Vancouver,
13:43would work construction
13:44and would fight out there.
13:47So he's a former part-time Canadian.
13:49That phase of his life is over.
13:50He's back in Mexico full-time now,
13:52except when he gets his call
13:53to come up here and fight Steve Butler.
13:54He's never showing any signs
13:59of any nerves in a ring
14:01as well, Macias,
14:01as far as I can go.
14:02Oh, big right hand
14:04from Steve Butler.
14:06And he stands over.
14:07He takes a look.
14:08And this is what we don't expect
14:10from Jose de Jesus Macias.
14:13Wow, what a shot.
14:18So right hand Butler's been
14:19looking for all night.
14:20And he comes in to close the show.
14:22He winds up.
14:23Big right hand again.
14:25Macias falls forward.
14:28And there's no need to count.
14:33Emphatic, spectacular,
14:36highlight reel knockout victory
14:38for Steven Butler.
14:39Wow, he's happy with that one
14:41because only the second time
14:42of Macias' career
14:43that it ends in a knockout.
14:45And that right hand
14:46came out of nowhere.
14:49And it was just a matter of time
14:50when he got back up.
14:52I was going to say,
14:52it was just some very cool,
14:54calm, collected.
14:54Yes.
14:56Wow, the crowd is up
14:57on their feet here
14:57for Steven Butler.
14:59And again,
15:00so it answers one
15:01of the questions we had
15:02about Steven Butler
15:02heading into this fight,
15:04which was,
15:05does that punching power
15:06come with him to 168?
15:08We've seen it at 154.
15:10We saw it at 160
15:11against Steve Rolls.
15:13And we've seen it tonight
15:14at 168
15:16against Jose de Jesus Macias.
15:19Because de Jesus Macias
15:20is a guy that does not,
15:21he goes the distance.
15:23Not as much speed,
15:24I thought,
15:25I thought from Steven Butler
15:26tonight,
15:26which is normal
15:27going in this weight class.
15:27But the fact that he's also
15:29feeling much stronger
15:30in training,
15:31happier to not have
15:32to kill himself
15:32to make weight,
15:33let's see the replay
15:34of this right hand.
15:35So he's pawing
15:35with the jab
15:36and boom,
15:37overhand right.
15:38Right on the chin
15:39of Macias.
15:40So he was just pawing
15:43with the jab a little bit,
15:43didn't even throw it.
15:44Then when he followed up,
15:45telling the crowd,
15:46here he comes.
15:47Yeah.
15:48And one other right hand,
15:49Macias was down
15:50for the count.
15:52Yeah, you saw on that,
15:54not that right hand
15:55that caused
15:55the first knockdown.
15:57How Butler sort of
15:58changed your trajectory on it.
15:59He's been throwing it
15:59straight all night,
16:00throwing it straight,
16:01throwing it straight,
16:02throwing it straight.
16:03And this time he's looped it.
16:04He threw it overhand
16:05right over the top
16:06of Macias' guard.
16:08That's an excellent point,
16:09Morgan,
16:09because he's so used
16:10to now that straight shot,
16:11just tilting that hand
16:12a little bit with the jab,
16:13making him miss.
16:15And that was a heck
16:16of a knockout.
16:17Maybe there's been
16:18a lot of good knockouts
16:19so far tonight.
16:20That might have been
16:20the best punch
16:21of the night.
16:23And that's like
16:24the ultimate truth.
16:26The bottom line
16:27about Stephen Butler
16:27is that you can be
16:29Jose de Jesus Macias
16:31and be really good
16:32at taking punches,
16:33really good at taking
16:33the power off
16:34your opponent punches,
16:35but if Stephen Butler
16:36hits you that flush,
16:38it is very difficult
16:39to stay on your feet.
16:41And in the super middleweight
16:42division,
16:42all of a sudden
16:42Stephen Butler
16:43taking those shots
16:44from Macias,
16:45because he did take
16:45some opening big hooks,
16:47especially in that first round.
16:49Reacted well.
16:50He's going to want
16:51to continue,
16:52and I know that he wasn't
16:53happy with the loss
16:54against Patrice Volney.
16:55This is a big local fight.
16:56Patrice Volney fighting
16:57tomorrow night
16:58in his big fight
16:58as well in Laval.
17:00Could there be a rematch
17:01down the road?
17:02I don't know,
17:02but I know Butler
17:03is going to be very happy
17:04to want to continue
17:05his career.
17:09As Matt,
17:09as we take a look
17:10at this again,
17:10there he is.
17:12Blinds him with the jab
17:13over the top
17:14with the right hand.
17:14Again,
17:15it almost doesn't matter
17:16how good your chin is.
17:18Maybe Canelo Alvarez
17:19can take that shot,
17:20but there's not a lot
17:21of other people
17:22who can take that shot
17:23and keep going.
17:24And that overhand right
17:25that we saw earlier
17:26in that first knockdown
17:27is almost as if Butler
17:29was like a baseball pitcher
17:31the way he threw
17:31and set up that motion.
17:36And you were telling us
17:37that Morgan and Macias
17:38is thinking retirement.
17:39That might make sure
17:40he's retired.
17:48Macias was telling me
17:50before the fight
17:50that he had decided
17:52this fight,
17:52win, lose, or draw,
17:53was his last fight.
17:54But then he said,
17:55I've also said that
17:56to myself for every fight
17:57for the last five years.
17:59And the sport just keeps
18:00bringing me back.
18:01But maybe this time,
18:02because he fully intended
18:03to leave here
18:04after having won by knockout.
18:06you're going to win by knockout.
