00:00You may not receive my instructions.
00:05Protect yourselves at all times, man.
00:08Touch gloves now, you're boxing the bell.
00:10God bless you both.
00:14Here we see the tail of the Titan.
00:16Height almost even, slight edge to Luis Santana.
00:19Age, big edge to Luis Santana.
00:21He's 27 years old, should be in his physical prime,
00:24whereas Estella at 35 is sort of hanging on to his last prime years.
00:29We last saw Eduardo Estella last fought in April.
00:33Fourth round TKO win over, third round TKO win over Criston Cancillo.
00:39Last time we saw him before that, he was on the long end.
00:42Fourth round TKO against Steve Claggett in Gatineau, Quebec,
00:46on the same card where we last saw Luis Santana gutting out,
00:50winning an eight round decision in a wild fight over Sebastian Aguirre.
00:55That was a fight where he got caught in the first round.
00:58Still has very good power.
01:00Should he rolled a knockdown or behind the head?
01:02Slip.
01:07Yes, Matt, you were saying, that fight, that last fight in Gatineau,
01:11didn't start the way we expected it to.
01:13No, it did not.
01:14And this is why it's a heck of a good gatekeeper test, I find,
01:17for about an eight-month layoff for Luis Santana.
01:19War against Aguirre, and here he's fighting a good veteran fighter,
01:23who, against the better, though, opposition, most of the time will lose,
01:26like as Steve Claggett was able to win, and as he should,
01:29as one of the top-string welterweights in the world,
01:31so this is a good test for the lightweight division for Luis Santana.
01:34Yeah, because if you're a guy in Luis Santana's position,
01:37if you are the rising contender you think you are,
01:41then you should be able to handle a guy like Estella,
01:43because history shows that nobody beats him
01:45unless you're that type of guy.
01:46Correct.
01:47Early on, you see the good body-punching,
01:49body-punches of Luis Santana, but...
01:52Estella, usually his power, especially early on,
01:55although he seems to be bothered by something now
01:57towards his right eye, there's some swelling.
02:00And you see Estella on the move, that's not usually what he likes to do.
02:03You've seen Estella fight, he likes to come forward,
02:05he has a very active lead hand.
02:07But right now, Santana is stalking.
02:10And if it's his right eye, it might have been a left hook,
02:13because Santana has let go of a few of them early in this fight,
02:16just to set the tempo, just to let Estella know.
02:22One big sharp jab by Santana, wants to close the distance,
02:25wants to use that left hook to the body,
02:27and definitely some swelling,
02:29maybe a little bit of a cut underneath the eye of Estella.
02:31Yes.
02:32For the people joining us who have never seen any...
02:35Santana fight over,
02:37that right there is vintage Luis Santana.
02:39That should be a knockdown, definitely.
02:41The Wolves even held him up for the first time.
02:44He is a technically sound boxer puncher,
02:46but that one, too, rocked Eduardo Estella's world.
02:51You can tell as soon as that right eye started to bother him,
02:54he started backpedaling,
02:56and he hasn't recovered then,
02:58and now the cut has also opened.
02:59And here's Luis Santana doing what he does best.
03:02He is a compact, technical boxer puncher.
03:08That decision went over Sebastian Aguirre.
03:10Ended a four-fight knockout streak.
03:12Here you're seeing why he had a four-fight knockout streak.
03:15Those lefts and rights to the body really hurt Estella.
03:18Got his attention again.
03:19Here's Estella in retreat.
03:20And that's what was interesting about his early part of his career for Santana.
03:23He only has six knockouts in total in 13 fights.
03:26Very misleading, though.
03:27Much better puncher, and we're seeing it at late.
03:29Yes!
03:30Good morning!
03:32Good morning.
03:33Good morning.
03:34Where's the kick?
03:35You're good?
03:36Yeah.
03:37What's fine?
03:38I'm coming through?
03:39I think that right hand originally was not rule a knockdown this is the one that eventually
04:06did even here was completely off balance little follow-up that barely hit but I think that
04:12original right hand that led him to the ropes is what really caused a knockdown yeah and you can
04:15see the mark underneath Eduardo Thaylor's right eye you can see just the power in that right hand
04:22that Luis Santana hit him with because it wasn't in a spot that usually knocks people down he hit
04:26him in the chest and drove him across the ring it's also unclear how that kind of cut and swelling
04:32first occurred but that left hook the first minute or so could definitely have been a shot
04:38to cause the issue here Santana back claiming centering doing what he wants to do the thing
04:45that makes him comfortable staying behind that guard snapping out that jab finding an angle for
04:50that straight right hand and then everything else works and Estella is definitely not comfortable
04:55fighting out the back foot he wants to kind of change a little bit of momentum here he's going
04:59to have to do what you're seeing a little bit here is back Santana up yes but you can tell the one
05:05punch power that Santana possesses now uh has Eduardo Estella sort of reconsidering what he wants
05:12here's Santana backing Estella up with a jab and Estella understanding he's got to fight off the ropes
05:17beautiful right hand from Estella beautiful loud left hook and then now right to the body from Santana
05:21right to the body from Santana straight right hand from Estella just to keep yeah just to keep
05:27Santana honest and while Estella again if you've seen him a lot on video he the right hand is not
05:37it's there he's sort of like a poor man's Andre Ward or Oscar de la Hoya orthodox fighter who does the
05:43vast majority of his work with the left hand here Santana stocking another big right hand
05:52and these punches if they're not all hurting Estella they're getting the tension that's definitely so
05:56and which is why you're not seeing him open up as much imagine he tried a little bit early on in the
06:01second round but because Santana is so compact a couple of combination punches and stiff jobs back in
06:07control there's a hook quick sharp inside left hook sends Estella to the campus for the second time
06:25tonight second time in two rounds Estella to his credit comes back fighting throwing left hooks to
06:32the body into the head that overhand right glances off of Santana's shoulder just missed doing some
06:39damage that's why when you're a little bit too wide a sharper Santana right it's able to really
06:45capitalize on that mistake that's a mistake from Estella yeah he beat Estella to the punch essentially
06:50correct two guys throwing similar punches at the same time he's trying to get that counter hook
06:55yes soon as Estella throws that right hand from a distance and Santana's staying composed he said
06:59that's one of the learning moments he had in the card against Aguirre in october is that he's got
07:04to stay focused at all times in the pro ranks and even within that fight if you're a Santana optimist
07:09you have to be impressed with the way he came back from those two knockouts absolutely and turned it
07:13back into the boxing match another big right hand for Luis Santana at the end of a authoritative
07:20combination it's going to be a tough fight for Estella i'm not sure how much he can withstand these
07:25combination punches from Santana he's complaining about the back of the head morgan but i don't think
07:33think that was the case here
07:56and later tonight stick around obviously if you're all if you are here already you will be here for the
08:01co-main event between steven bang bang butler and jose de jesus macias and obviously the main event
08:09wbc world interim title fight between christian and billy and my chesu lesky but matt yeah here's
08:16Santana it was with a jab it looked like almost like a power jab i thought it was a hook originally
08:20almost i think the left foot of Estella might have also stepped on the left foot of Santana on that one
08:27one but then later on he also had a combination of punches led by that right hand Estella was
08:31complaining at the back of the head but that's usually a veteran tactic to buy time exactly and
08:35it's not been a very easy two first rounds for Estella three knockdowns officially
08:40Santana in complete control but has to stay vigilant with a powerful fighter like Estella yes
08:46and here you see Santana with still with that high guard again advancing behind that jab
08:57and here's Estella he's got the memo he cannot fight this fight on the back foot
09:00throws a one-two essentially to keep Santana's hands at home
09:06trying to get that jab established see if he can set up some offense for me
09:10beautiful one-two from Estella that's what he's going to need to do a little bit more
09:17to keep Santana at bay credit to Estella
09:22and i'm just trying to hold and run away nice body shot there
09:27and credit Santana managing to avoid the subsequent right hands is doing
09:32getting right back doing what he wants to which is unloading with both hands to the body
09:36the right hand has Estella back in retreat
09:43right and then Santana walks him into that straight right
09:47crashes into Estella's cheek
09:54Santana does a very good job of keeping tight defense yes moving the upper body on the way in
09:59his jab has been very successful yeah and you can tell that he's been working on it's sort of a
10:07reflex a counter punch reflex the second Estella punches him the second Estella touches him
10:14Santana comes back with two correct right there getting started with the jab big right hand to the
10:19body another left hook to the body Estella hangs on that's a good move by Santana push him off
10:25he's going to hold him the referee's going to warn for one thing or the other
10:30and there's Santana another flurry punctuated by a straight right to the jaw
10:38and Estella is looking for some place not necessarily to hide but looking for some
10:41place to regroup but as you said this is a casino size ring it's not an arena size ring
10:45not many places to go regroup right right for many action fights tonight
10:57big right hand and another one from Santana
11:03finishes with the left hook
11:05Estella falling short with the left hook and Santana making him pay
11:08really smart defense to offense offense defense back to offense from Santana right
11:18he's also mixing it up well keeping Estella honest of the hook coming and the body shot
11:24coming the right hand
11:28nice right hand from Estella that was behind the head you're correct
11:32you're correct he has a legitimate complaint there
11:46how about
11:48how about
11:50how about
11:52how about
11:56So, if you guys are interested in travelling, some of this audience is already in the United States.
12:23Big card coming up July 12th at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.
12:28Edgar Berlanga versus Hamza Shiraz in the main event.
12:31Shakur Stevenson and William Zepeda is turning into a grudge match for the lightweight belts in the co-feature.
12:37And, of course, Imam Katayev is trained here in Montreal against David Morel a little bit further down that card.
12:42Yes, please, in a solution translation.
12:44I'll be in charge of the French translations in the corner tonight. You'll do the Spanish ones.
12:47You see Estella coming out firing here.
12:49But, yeah, Santana seemed to be bothered a little bit by the left biceps, was asking his coach to massage it a little bit here and keep it loose.
12:55And the trainer, of course, was telling Santana to throw and finish a little bit more with the right hand.
13:01Especially when Estella's back against the ropes.
13:03Yeah, that's what I couldn't tell between rounds, whether that was some massage because something was wrong
13:07or whether it was some standard what athletes call kinesthetic cueing, when you touch the muscle, flick the muscle, smack the muscle to activate and make it work.
13:17There's a big right hand for Estella.
13:19Santana took it well.
13:21Yep.
13:22And, again, Estella's landing just enough for those to stay in the fight, just enough for those to think he can land more.
13:27But here's Santana back with a big one-two to the body, big left and a right to the body.
13:32What we saw previously with Andreev as well is that the numbers, you know, just taking the loss easy.
13:37No.
13:38They want to fight back, and Estella's doing a good job here after a couple of knockdowns early on.
13:42Having a good early minute of the fourth round.
13:44Listen, Estella is here to win.
13:46At 35 years old, he still thinks he has one more run at a title fight in him.
13:52It was a good uppercut by Estella, but a body shot by Santana.
13:55Like you said earlier on, Morgan, he's done a good job of countering as soon as Estella starts punching.
14:00Yes.
14:01And so you see Estella huffing, puffing, spitting.
14:04These body shots from Santana are starting to take a toll on him.
14:07And, again, here is Estella with his back in the ropes.
14:10That's not where he wants to be.
14:11Estella kind of ducks and turns his head away, which beats him hard to eat.
14:15Yes.
14:16Punches behind the head.
14:17Yes.
14:18In this range, though, you would think Santana is really in the driver's seat.
14:22Yes.
14:23At this range and at this posture, Santana still has his left foot forward.
14:27Estella is completely squared up.
14:29Not quite in desperation, but he's on the way there.
14:32Another stiff jab from Santana.
14:34You can see Estella's offense starting to slow down a little bit.
14:38His punches are coming a little bit more slowly.
14:40He's done a good job of maintaining the cut and swelling in the corner under his right eye.
14:44Just helped him a little bit.
14:46You see him breathing heavier.
14:47His body blows on Santana, I'm sure, having their effects.
14:51Estella, let's remember, not only is he a full-time boxer, but he teaches boxing classes at the Welcome Gym, at Gymnasio Welcome in Montevideo.
15:07He also incorporates a lot of Pilates into his strength and conditions.
15:10Very interesting.
15:11You see, always fighters have different training regimens and have Pilates to the mix.
15:17I haven't heard that one a lot.
15:18Yoga.
15:19Yes.
15:20I think it was on your podcast where I heard John Pascal say he did too much yoga before in
15:27these fights.
15:28Limit that on the loss to Michael Eifert.
15:29And it slowed him down.
15:30Yes.
15:31Little bit more of a nod this trip fourth round probably from Santana.
15:38That close distance, that was a good hook by Estella.
16:01Good right hand, but Santana countered it back as well.
16:06Good uppercut.
16:07In fact, it might have been Estella's best round of the fight.
16:09Yes.
16:10Was it enough to win it?
16:11I don't think so, but Santana was not as accurate in that fourth round.
16:16No, you're seeing Estella, for all the problems he's had, for all the struggling he's done,
16:22he's landing just enough to stay in the fight, not necessarily from the standpoint of winning
16:27rounds on the scorecards, but from the standpoint of keeping Santana honest, keeping Santana alert.
16:35And letting Santana understand he's in a fight.
16:37There's Santana claiming ring center, setting that tempo with that stiff jab.
16:42And I think tonight is another example of Steve Claggett, who's having a big fight coming
16:46up in August with what I have in Tiger.
16:48He was able to stop and sell in the fourth round.
16:50He was also able to stop Aguirre, who fought against Luis Santana this past October,
16:54and win the distance against John Orobio, who's fighting later on tonight.
16:57Just to give the credit of how good Steve Claggett is with that volume punching and that pace.
17:01Stop, stop, stop!
17:02He doesn't get the credit he deserves.
17:04And a big welcome to our international audience, those of you just tuning in at 7pm Eastern.
17:10Welcome.
17:11We are midway through the second fight on the card.
17:13This is Montreal's Luis Santana in the beautiful cream-colored rival gloves, Matt, against
17:20Eduardo Estela of Ecuador, not Ecuador, of Uruguay in the white and blue shorts.
17:27Oh, good hook there by Santana.
17:30Beautiful.
17:31Santana in complete control for the international.
17:33Santana in complete control so far.
17:35Eduardo Estela, a wildly veteran, hungry veteran, still an ambitious veteran, landing just enough
17:42to keep Luis Santana honest.
17:44But here's Estela back on the back foot, Matt, and Santana unloading again.
17:49Very smartly pushing off, not giving Estela a chance to hold.
17:52Well, he's pushing the pace a little bit more here in the fifth round after a slower fourth.
17:58You saw the trade left hooks there, Matt, almost land simultaneously, and there's no question
18:05about whose left hook landed with more impact.
18:11So, Santana with good experience having an eight-round fight on his first ten-rounder.
18:21Maintaining his composure offensively with a nice hook there.
18:24Yeah, another crisp right hand.
18:26Left hook to the body, which might become a theme tonight.
18:29Drops Estela for the fourth time today.
18:32There's a deep breath from Estela, negative body language, and here they are stopping the fight.
18:39Well-timed stoppage, I can't complain.
18:45Estela was outclassed, outgunned all night.
18:49He had nothing else to prove.
18:51And I think your corner knows your limitations.
18:54They should as much as possible, and know you better than anybody else.
18:57So, at times I know the referee gets pressured into stopping a fight,
19:01but here at the corner you have a responsibility towards your fighter,
19:03and they did a good job here when you saw his body language.
19:06Yes.
19:07I tried here, just don't have enough.
19:09I'm outgunned, I'll match.
19:10Yes, absolutely.
19:11And often you'll see a fighter who's too proud to quit.
19:15Should quit, they're too proud to quit.
19:17If that fighter is too proud to quit, the corner can't be too proud to quit.
19:21And you saw Estela's coaches climbing the ring step as Estela hit the ground.
19:26Mission accomplished for Luis Santana as they want to compare him with some of the other prospects that Estela has lost to in his career.
19:34And usually he's lost to very promising fighters, which is not only Steve Claggett, but also guys like Angel Fierro and Mauricio Lara.
19:43So, for Luis Santana, they'll be very happy with his progress and what, a fifth knockout now in his last six fights.
19:50Absolutely.
19:51Estela is sort of the textbook definition of a gatekeeper.
19:55Correct.
19:56And if you can't beat him, you're not the contender you think you are.
19:58If you can't beat him, it doesn't necessarily mean you're a future world champion, but it means you have a chance if you move on to the next level.
20:07Yeah, and Santana, for a guy that started out his career as strictly a boxer, now five knockouts in his last six fights.
20:14And even in the last fight...
20:16Multiple knockdowns.
20:17Recorded some knockdowns.
20:18That's right.
20:19He's really grown into his power.
20:21Multiple knockdowns.
20:22Please don't.
20:23Please don't.
20:24Please don't.
20:25Please don't.
20:26Please don't.
20:27Please don't.
20:28Please don't.
20:31Ladies and gentlemen, official time.
20:322 minutes, 3 seconds.
20:33Round 5.
20:34Our fifth round.
20:35The winner, Michael Griffin, is the fight declaring the winner by TKO.
20:40Ladies and gentlemen, official time.
20:422 minutes, 3 seconds of round number 5.
20:46Referee Michael Griffin stops the fight declaring the winner by Daniel Fierro.
20:50by TKO Luis Santana.
