00:00After I had a good four or five months of physio and learning how to reuse the hand there were some points of celebration along the way such as lifting a fork to my mouth or putting socks on in the morning. Once I could use my hand for normal life again then I'm good. I returned to work and now back frontline duties.
00:23So I'm okay. It's not affected me emotionally as much as it might have done and I'm lucky. I'm lucky because I've got the support around me to stop that from happening. I've got a wife who took care of me, who put socks on me in the morning, who cooked for me every day, who cleaned the house and then raised a child as well.
00:41So how can I sit here and say that I'm struggling mentally when I've got that network as well as my wider family around me. There are things which are different. I have heightened sense of danger when we respond to knife related calls or calls of danger.
01:01But we still do it and we still do it as professionally as we can.
01:06Well the overall objective was to disarm Mr. Monzo and effect the arrest of him and it really is as simple as that. That's all you've got to do as a police officer on the ground, preserve life and make lawful arrests.
01:19Clearly in this case it was a slightly more challenging because he had a 60 centimetre sword. So I initially had to decide whether to contain him or confront him and that was the most challenging part for me.
01:32If anything, it's renewed mine and everyone else's focus to do our jobs. It's a very simple test. When faced with an incident like this, do we do as we expect from ourselves and what the public expect?
01:46If you expect a police officer to challenge someone with a sword, what do you imagine that police officer to do? And did we do that? Yes we did and we'll do it again.
