00:00Every Thursday at 1130, we check in with Rob Bradford, WEI.com, Baseball is a Boring Podcast.
00:07Check them out on the Odyssey app, A-U-D-A-C-Y.
00:10Get that on your phone, free, easy, take it with you wherever you go.
00:13Rob Bradford brought to you by McFarlane Energy, the heating, cooling, and bioheat delivery pros
00:18that Eastern Mass and all of Cape Cod depend on at McFarlaneEnergy.com.
00:25Rob Bradford, how are we doing this week?
00:27McFarlane, McFarlane. Oh my goodness.
00:29I'm so good. The red-eye flight always seems like a good idea at the time.
00:33Always a terrible idea, finally shaking off that.
00:37So I feel good. I feel good to be with you guys.
00:39Okay. Well, the Red Sox, watching them doesn't feel very good these days.
00:45How are we feeling about the ball club?
00:49It's basically the same question that was giving Craig Breslow out of the gate for Craig.
00:54I think I will give a far less articulate answer.
00:58And just say, you don't feel good.
01:01You do not feel good about this.
01:03And I don't know if you want mad foe, glad foe, or sad foe.
01:07I don't know what you want.
01:08Wow.
01:08But, I mean, I'm erring toward mad foe because I look at this, what has happened.
01:17And particularly that quote from Breslow in the Zoom call, you know, where he said, you know, we could end up with more wins.
01:24We think we ended up with more wins doing it this way than basically if we were going to do it with the Devers.
01:29Well, it may end up that way.
01:33But even this last week, there's been so many flawed elements of this.
01:37The biggest thing is that, yeah, yeah, okay, you want to turn this over.
01:42You want to turn over the vibe of the team.
01:44You thought you could get something back in terms of money and in terms of these pitchers.
01:49That's fine.
01:50But what you didn't do was you didn't replace a bat.
01:54And you just were counting on a lot of these players to take a step up.
01:59And they've all, almost all of them have taken a step back.
02:03And where that has left you, that has left you in a tremendously uncomfortable position at a most important time.
02:09As you wait for Alex Bregman and Masi Ushida to come back after the All-Star break.
02:16So what I'm saying is that in this time where you were going to define whether or not this trade has worked,
02:21whether it's going to define whether or not you're going to actually be a buyer at the deadline,
02:26you've left yourself in a spot where you can't score any runs because you don't have that guy in the middle of the order.
02:34That's why I'm like, man, this is, right now as we sit here, the timing of this just does not look good.
02:42Yeah, the trade, obviously you're not going to help your offense with the pieces that are coming back.
02:47But it'd be easier to defend the trade if you're Breslow.
02:49If we actually saw Jordan Hicks or Kyle Harrison, are we ever going to see either one of these guys?
02:55Yeah, I mean, Harrison's pitching tonight.
02:56I think that you'll probably see Harrison maybe in a week or so.
03:02Hicks the same way.
03:03And I know that Craig came on and he talked about, and I know that Alex has also talked about this,
03:09is that it's the pitching, it's the defense, it's the base running, it's all of this.
03:14But we can't ignore what not having an offense has done.
03:18Because I do think that when you don't have an offense, when you know that scoring runs is going to be a problem,
03:24that that puts the pressure on everybody else.
03:27And that makes everything else worse.
03:29That makes everything else a lot more difficult.
03:31I think that's exactly what we've seen over the last nine games here.
03:37So, yeah, I mean, I look at it this way.
03:39Is that, you know, and I wrote this today.
03:41If we want to juxtapose this against the Manny Ramirez trade, which is sort of along the same lines,
03:47middle of the season, turning things over for the sake of the clubhouse, so forth and so on.
03:52Well, you got Jason Bay back.
03:54And you also had other guys around him.
03:58Like, in this trade, right now as we sit here, the unfortunate thing is that you're relying on Roman Anthony out of nowhere to be a number three hitter.
04:06You're relying on Carlos Narvaez.
04:08When there's not a lefty on the mound.
04:09Right.
04:10Yeah, exactly.
04:11You're relying on a lot of these guys who maybe have had decent years up to this point, and now they're taking a turn.
04:18There isn't the no doubt about it guys that you did have back when you traded Manny.
04:23And that's the biggest difference.
04:25Yeah, that's fair.
04:27And I, you said Kyle Harrison, because I feel similar to Keefe where Breslau is trying to defend the trade.
04:35And he's like, well, we really like what we got back.
04:37Hicks and Harrison, like, what a return.
04:39It's like, they're in Worcester.
04:40Why is Harrison in Worcester?
04:42Are they manipulating service time to get an extra year of control?
04:45Well, you could certainly make that case.
04:48Because I do think that if they get to, I think it was the first week of July, they'll get an extra year.
04:55They'll also make the case of, and they've done this before with pitchers, where, okay, we're going to get you into our system.
05:01We're going to fiddle with this, fiddle with that.
05:03And then you're going to become the guy that we want.
05:06And we've seen that with other organizations.
05:07When they get a guy in, we're going to teach you what we see, and we're going to go from there.
05:12So I can't really answer that question.
05:15All I know is this.
05:15They do get another year of service time by waiting.
05:19Yeah, I believe they do.
05:20That kind of answers it to me.
05:22Yeah, I mean, I believe it, but we'll have to dig deeper into that.
05:29But I do think this could be right, man.
05:33They could be right.
05:34These guys could actually be helpful pieces of a winning team.
05:39But I'll come back to it.
05:40The problem is that the timing of this with the offense is really, really tough to take.
05:47And I've heard other people say this about the Roman Anthony situation when they didn't want to bring up Roman Anthony.
05:54And they said one of the reasons they didn't want to bring up Roman Anthony was because they didn't want to put too much pressure on him and drop him in.
06:01And then, really, I mean, there's no way around viewing it how it is right now.
06:05Well, you've put a lot of the pressure on him.
06:08You're hitting him as a legitimate middle-of-the-order guy.
06:13And so, you know, I look at it that way.
06:15I'm like, well, what has changed?
06:17And what has changed, obviously, is that you have no other options to go to.
06:21And that's where a big part of this situation is flawed.
06:25Do you have any thoughts as to why Jaron Duran is taking a big step backwards this year?
06:30And also, what is the likelihood he could be traded?
06:35I don't know why he's taking a step back.
06:37I think it's one of the biggest mysteries because he's healthy.
06:40He was a dynamic.
06:41We can't forget what a dynamic player he was last year.
06:44I think defensively and offensively he has taken a step back.
06:48So I don't have an answer for that.
06:50In terms of is he going to be traded, I think we're going to have to ride this out.
06:54And this is one of the things.
06:56We said this when it comes to the Devons trade, this whole dynamic with this team.
07:00You have about a month.
07:02You have about a month to define what this whole deal, where are you going to land?
07:06Because I don't think there's any question that if you do think that you're going to end up with more wins with this team after doing this deal,
07:16the whole plan was to have a good Jaron Duran at the top of the order.
07:19The whole plan was to have Jaron Duran be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
07:24But you have to figure this out.
07:26And if so, what I'm saying is if they are selling, yeah.
07:29I mean, I think that Jaron Duran could be on the table.
07:31And by the way, guys, I'm ranting and raving about what's here and what's now.
07:37But I do think that you can still salvage this.
07:40And I think the first step you do to salvaging it is you have to actually be as aggressive as you were when you came to the Devons trade.
07:47You have to do this again.
07:49You have to be aggressive.
07:50Carlos Santana, two years ago, was traded.
07:54The Seattle Mariners were two games under .500.
07:57The Seattle Mariners traded for Carlos Santana and went on this epic run where I think they went like 40-12 or something like that.
08:06And I'm not saying that's all because of one player.
08:08But if you're willing to be aggressive in mid-June with Rafael Devers, you have to acknowledge that you have to be also equally as aggressive in late June when it comes to fixing whatever ails you.
08:22Well, Breslow said that in his own robot way earlier today.
08:26He's like, as directly, would they be buyers or sellers?
08:28He did say he wanted to add.
08:29I mean, he beat around the bush a little bit.
08:31But he did say he wanted to add.
08:32But that doesn't mean they're going to do it immediately.
08:33That might mean closer to the end of July.
08:36But here's the thing, though.
08:36Here's the thing, Adam.
08:37If you don't – and I get waiting and you have to wait and the market is tough.
08:41I'm with you.
08:42Do it right now.
08:42I'm with you 100%.
08:43This isn't your normal trade deadline for the Boston Red Sox.
08:48You have to define what you are earlier than you ever have been because you have turned over the roster.
08:54You have thinned yourself out so much.
08:56And if you take a turn for the worse and you do wait, then you're going to dig yourself a hole that you're going to end up being sellers.
09:05And the conversation completely changes.
09:07Trust me.
09:07You're preaching to the choir.
09:08I'd love for them to make a trade tonight.
09:10Is Bregman – what's the situation with Alex Bregman?
09:13He's not coming back until after the All-Star break.
09:16Boris the other day said he'd talk deal, which, of course, duh.
09:20We also had Jeff Passan put Alex Bregman at the top of his trade candidates list.
09:25Only a 10% chance of him moving.
09:27So what exactly is the situation with Bregman?
09:31In terms of the injury, it is what it is.
09:34He keeps coming back.
09:36They better hope that he comes back right after the All-Star break.
09:39He was taking the Instagram, him running in fields and everything else.
09:43So I thought there was maybe a cart before the horse a little bit in terms of him coming back.
09:47But, you know, that's about the timeline that we thought it was going to be.
09:51When it comes to Bregman, yeah, you're right.
09:54I mean, when Boris says that, it was like you get by Tim Healy.
09:57But when Boris says that, it's like, yeah, you know, like what else is he going to say?
10:02So that doesn't surprise.
10:03If you're talking about when have you started talking with Alex Bregman,
10:08and I think that Craig Breslow, if you read between the lines, it doesn't seem like they have.
10:13Now, I'll say this.
10:16I hear everybody was saying he's going to jump ship.
10:19He's out after this year.
10:20I don't know about that, man.
10:22Like, I don't know about that.
10:23Like, I could see him staying.
10:25I do think he likes it here.
10:26We all know that his wife goes to school in the city, well, in Cambridge.
10:30And I think that he has liked it.
10:33And I do think that knowing that this is the Alex Bregman team,
10:38especially now that you don't have the mirage of the $300 million player
10:42as perhaps a face of the team.
10:46No, I mean, I could see Alex Bregman staying here.
10:49So I would strongly suggest that I do not think he is going to be trained.
10:55I don't think he's going to be dealt.
10:56How much longer can they keep trotting out Walker Bueller every fifth day?
11:01Well, he's going to get one more at least.
11:03Yeah.
11:03I mean, he's going to get – I mean, honestly –
11:05That's too many, Rob.
11:06Yeah, I know.
11:06Yeah, I know.
11:07I mean, if you want to match – and the one thing I like about Bueller
11:11is that he reminds me of Beckett back in the day where, like,
11:15his best press conferences is when he's bad.
11:19You know, he takes accountability and, you know, says I stink
11:23and all that stuff.
11:24And he also was honest the other night about how he understands the dynamic
11:28when it comes to the rotation and guys coming back.
11:32And that's true.
11:33I mean, look at – you know, you have Harrison coming back.
11:36Houck, who knows what's going on.
11:37I mean, that hasn't really gone well.
11:39But I think it's really – if you have other options, he has to perform.
11:44Right now, you don't really have any other options.
11:47So you keep running them out.
11:50What's going on with Cutter Crawford?
11:52And when I say what's going on, I know he's done for the year.
11:54What happened?
11:55I don't know, man.
11:56I wish I could tell you.
11:58I mean, maybe we'll get some answers.
12:00Yeah.
12:01We're going to speculate coming up.
12:02You haven't heard anything.
12:03You don't know anything.
12:05No.
12:05I mean, we haven't seen him.
12:07And maybe we'll see him tomorrow when they're back home.
12:09But, you know, I know that, you know, they – whatever they said,
12:14they said, hey, this isn't anything controversial.
12:15Nothing to see here.
12:17Don't ask any questions.
12:18We won't tell you what happened.
12:20It was not a weird thing that he did.
12:21It was totally normal.
12:22It was so weird.
12:23How did you –
12:23It reminded me, you know, anytime anything like this happens,
12:27something – a couple things come to mind.
12:30Paxton Crawford way back in the day.
12:32I remember that.
12:32What was that?
12:33He stepped on a glass or something like that?
12:35What was that?
12:36Yeah, glass.
12:36I don't know what happened.
12:37It was like hammered and fell out of bed.
12:40And I'm not saying this is the same thing,
12:42but anytime there's any mystery when it comes to injury.
12:44And then I remember a guy who I just interviewed, Michael Kopach.
12:49Like, Michael Kopach, I was sitting in the clubhouse in Fort Myers,
12:53and everybody else had gone up to Bradenton,
12:55and he walks by the clubhouse with a cast on his hand.
12:59And I'm like, what?
13:00So I'm like, what happened to you?
13:01Is it going to have to ask them?
13:02So I did ask them, and they were so fed up.
13:05They're like, no, he got in a fight with his roommate.
13:07They were just like, that's exactly what happened.
13:09He got in a fight with his roommate.
13:10So, yeah, but it's – I don't know.
13:14I mean, I hope that he's there tomorrow so we can ask him.
13:20But, you know, the thing is with Cutter Cromwell, it's too bad, man.
13:23Like, it's – he was – he could have been part of this solution,
13:26but obviously not the case.
13:28Real quick, because I know you've got to run.
13:30How did you guys find out about SAIL?
13:32Did the team tell you?
13:33Did he volunteer it?
13:34Did somebody report it?
13:34How did the SAIL fall off the bike come out?
13:36About the what, the bike riding thing?
13:37Yeah, yeah.
13:38How did we find out about that?
13:39They said it.
13:40They said it.
13:41They said it.
13:42No, that's what I'm saying.
13:43So the team told us.
13:45Yeah, we forgot.
13:45Okay.
13:45I just couldn't remember.
13:47Okay.
13:47Yeah, and a lot of people thought, you know, but that led to, like,
13:50well, it wasn't a bike.
13:51We don't have – we don't have television footage of it,
13:55or we don't want to have proof of it.
13:56I mean, so that led to all kinds of different questions.
13:59What are you doing riding a bike?
14:00All of that.
14:01But, you know, yeah, that's what they – that's what they said out of the gate.
14:04Okay.
14:04All right.
14:05Rob Bradford, WEEI.com, Baseball Isn't Boring Podcast.
14:09Check it out.
14:09On the Odyssey app.
14:11Brad Foe, enjoy.
14:12Watch on the Red Sox.
14:13We'll talk to you next week.
14:14All right, guys.
14:14I'll talk to you later.
14:15Thanks.
14:15Thank you, Rob.
14:15All right.
14:16You want to know a little bit of Michael – you know how I'm the WAG expert?
14:20Yeah.
14:20This one will blow your mind.
14:21I know you're the WAG expert.
14:22Do you know who Michael Kopech went out with at one point?
14:23I have no idea.
14:24This is a deep cut.
14:25Your wife would know who this is.
14:26So, Kroy – Kroy Bierman.
14:30Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:30The football player for the Falcons.
14:32I know.
14:32He was married, and it's popped up a lot of people on the –
14:34Say her name.
14:35I'm going to know it.
14:35Kim Zolziak.
14:36Yes, yeah, yeah.
14:36Who was like Real Housewives of Atlanta on a –
14:38This Bravo show?
14:39Kopech dated her?
14:40Or Kim?
14:40No, daughter.
14:41Not it.
14:42Kim's daughter dated Kopech for a while.
14:44Now I think he's with somebody else.
14:45I think all these Bravo daughters now have a show.
14:49Oh.
14:50I think she's a part of it.
14:51She's probably there talking about Kopech.
14:52She's like, yeah.
14:52100-mile-an-hour fastball.
14:54Now he's with somebody else.
14:55Could have been –
14:56Could have been me.
14:57Could have been Paul Skeens.
14:58That's right.
14:58Could have been.
14:59Just missed.
14:59It's Jones and Keefe.
15:00We're brought to you by Jackson Lumber and Millwork.
15:02Visit Jackson Lumber and Millwork for all your residential remodeling or commercial building materials and supplies.

15:11Red Sox won't tell us what happened to Cutter Crawford.
15:15But Keefe and I have some guesses.
15:16Some ideas.
15:17Got some ideas.
15:17As to what could have gone down.
15:19Wrist injury, you say?
15:21All right.
15:22If it was a neck injury, I'd have a guess.
15:24I can tell you that.
15:25There's only two ways those happen.
15:27A car accident and something else.
15:29As Larry David once said.
