00:00NATO leaders on Wednesday confirmed their commitment to more than double defense spending by 2035,
00:07banding words like Crucial, Mementos and Quantum Leap.
00:11Members said that they were united against profound security challenges,
00:16singling out the long-term threat posed by Russia and terrorism.
00:21The resolutions came even as U.S. President Donald Trump faced questions at the summit
00:26about the Ukraine wars, something he described as being hard for him to solve.
00:32Because it's more difficult than people would have any idea, Vladimir Putin has been more difficult.
00:40Frankly, I had some problems with Zelensky, you may have read about him, and it's been more difficult than other wars.
00:46By the end of the summit, allies in a joint statement committed to spending 3.5% of GDP
00:52on core defense spending to buy military hardware and maintain troops.
00:58However, their statements did not include a condemnation of Russia's invasion of Ukraine as it had a year ago.
01:05Trump, who had always castigated European allies for not spending enough on their own defense,
01:11hailed the decision taken at the summit in The Hague.
01:14The U.S. President described it as a big win for Europe and Western civilization.
01:22On the sidelines of the NATO summit in The Hague,
01:25High Representative of the European Union Kayakalla spoke to Euronews about the text messages
01:30sent by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to U.S. President Donald Trump
01:33in which he praised him on the strikes on Iran as well as increased defense spending in Europe.
01:39Mark Rutte is speaking Trump.
01:41I think, you know, he's speaking the language that President Trump definitely understands and he needs to get this across.
01:53I think it's very important that everybody is doing this 5% and agreeing to this.
01:59President Trump has been the one who has been calling for this.
02:04We definitely have listened to President Trump and everybody is doing more.
02:09When asked how it will be ensured that the new spending levels are achieved,
02:14Kalas spoke about implementing a well-defined milestone process.
02:18The last time when we had the pledge in 2014, it was for 2024,
02:23but there wasn't really a clear path how to get there.
02:26Now you have, you know, milestones on the way to check whether everybody is in the right trajectory.
02:33And when it comes to defense spending, it's also very much defined what goes into that.
02:38Kalas was also asked about the EU-Israel Association Agreement after an internal review found indications of human right breaches by the Israeli military in Gaza.
02:47We agreed to put the pressure on Israel to really have a dialogue and we already agreed how to improve the situation.
02:56So step-by-step approach to really push them so that the situation would be better.
03:03Seeing these things, people shot in the line of getting flour and food, I think it's untenable.
03:11As we have done the Article 2 review, it's clear that the next step is to take the measures.
03:17So, you know, we also have the pressure points, you know, clearly,
03:22that if you don't improve the situation and you're still in breach of the Article 2,
03:27then we can move on with the different measures that come from the Association Agreement.
03:31At a high-level pledging event in Brussels, the Gavi Vaccine Alliance rallied international donors
03:41to fund its next five-year program.
03:44Contributions came from the EU and several European countries too,
03:47without, however, any support from the US.
03:50So far, Gavi has secured over 7.7 billion euros, less than its target,
03:56but with more pledges expected in the coming weeks.
03:58What's at stake is the life of millions and millions of children.
04:04And I think there is nothing more important in the world than the lives of millions of children.
04:08It makes a difference if they get immunization, if they get vaccines or not.
04:14Because if they don't get, they will die from perfectly preventable diseases through immunization.
04:20And so what we are asking donors is to contribute to the next five years of Gavi.
04:26Gavi is a global health partnership launched in 2000
04:30to improve vaccine access for children in the world's poorest nations.
04:34Since then, the Alliance has helped vaccinate over a billion children
04:38and are estimated it has saved 19 million lives.
04:42Now it aims to reach 500,000 million more children by 2030.
04:47At the Brussels Summit, European leaders, including those from Spain, Ireland, Greece and Croatia,
04:52pledged increased support.
04:54The European Commission also reaffirmed its commitment.
04:58Today is the moment to reaffirm our engagement.
05:03And I am proud to say that Europe will continue to contribute.
05:08Team Europe is Gavi's largest donor.
05:12And today...
05:13Today I am pleased to pledge 360 million euros to Gavi at this summit.
05:21Major donors also included the United Kingdom and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
05:27Notably absent the United States.
05:30A long time Gavi backer, the US has announced it will no longer provide funding,
05:35part of a broader move to cut international aid under President Donald Trump's administration.
05:40How X's AI chatbots struggle to fact-check the Israel-Iran conflict.
05:51Users have been turning to AI chatbots to inform themselves about the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran,
05:59which now seems to have subsided.
06:01But a new study shows that Grok, the free-to-use chatbot developed by Elon Musk's X-AI,
06:08has been misleading users with inconsistent and incorrect claims.
06:13This video, claiming to show the destruction from a retaliatory Iranian attack on Tel Aviv airport,
06:19is AI-generated.
06:21We here at Euroverify have previously debunked it.
06:24But when asked to verify its authenticity, Grok replied that it was likely real footage, not AI-generated.
06:32At Euroverify, we identified several more instances in which Grok falsely describes AI-generated videos as authentic.
06:41We also detected instances of Grok linking completely unrelated videos to the conflict.
06:47Grok describes this video, which shows festival-goers at Hellfest in France,
06:53as showing Israelis fleeing the conflict at the Taba border crossing with Egypt.
06:59And Grok also alleges that this video of an explosion in Malaysia
07:03shows an Iranian missile hitting Tel Aviv on June the 19th.
07:08Researchers at the Digital Forensic Research Lab say that Grok
07:11grounds its responses on media reports that quickly become outdated due to the fast-paced nature of the conflict.
07:18The chatbot also consistently fails to corroborate the authenticity of sources,
07:23For example, it's claimed that accounts that are spreading disinformation on X are official, governmental, or military accounts.
07:31Experts say users are increasingly reliant on these tools for fact-checking.
07:36Yet, these tools are in fact amplifying disinformation and conspiracies.
07:41Will the anti-greenwashing proposal survive the tug-of-war between European institutions?
07:51The Commission announced last week its plans to withdraw this key Green Deal text.
07:57The directive aims to combat greenwashing by controlling terms like eco-friendly and natural.
08:03The proposal on green claims is to ensure a better protection to consumers and to ensure competitiveness of the European firms
08:11because we want to substantiate a claim which says this product is very green, this product is very sustainable, it's good.
08:19But if you say it, if you go on the market saying that, you have to follow a procedure that allows us to make sure that what you claim is really true.
08:28The controversy follows several Commission new turns on environmental policies.
08:33One German MEP confirms that the EPP wants the proposal withdrawn.
08:38The EPP thinks it's good when the Commission will withdraw this piece of legislation
08:46because it's stemming from the old time where the Commission thought we cannot have enough environmental legislation
08:55and we have seen that business, in particular SMEs, are overloaded with all the complexities.
09:03Meanwhile, Social Democrats, Green and Liberal MEPs condemn what they see as the EPP Conservatives
09:11aligning with the far right and threaten to break ranks with the EPP.
09:15If it confirms that the European Commission is actually withdrawing this proposal
09:21on the sole reason that it gives in to a majority built by the Conservatives with extreme right groups,
09:28this is the moment where von der Leyen is losing the support of her own majority of Liberals, Social Democrats, Greens
09:36and her own EPP group.
09:38The Commission may renegotiate if micro-enterprises are excluded.
09:43I hope that there is room for agreement between the three institutions and the message coming from the Commission was that
09:56if it was such a relevant change in the discussion, the Commission may take into consideration a withdrawal of the directive.
10:09It remains to be seen whether the Council will give in to the Commission's pressure.
10:17We made history.
10:19In a stunning political upset, Democratic Socialist Zohram Memdani declared victory in New York City's mayoral primary on Tuesday.
10:28Until it is done.
10:29With most ballots counted, the 33-year-old held a significant lead over former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was the favorite to win.
10:37Cuomo has since conceded defeat in the race.
10:41The result is seen as a litmus test for the Democratic Party, pitting a young progressive against an establishment moderate.
10:49Memdani, backed by figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, campaigned on free public transport and new taxes on the wealthy.
10:57Cuomo ran on a promise to restore order in the city, but was hampered by a sexual harassment scandal that forced his resignation as governor in 2021.
11:06Thank you. Can't wait.
11:07A general election to decide the final outcome will be held in November, though this week's primary is widely seen as the race that effectively decides who will be the mayor.
11:16While Cuomo concedes the primary, he told the New York Times he is still considering running in November's general election as an independent.
11:26He is your voice.
11:27Memdani is now on track to become the city's first Muslim and Indian-American man.
11:31And he called me to concede the race.
