Europe leads global vaccine effort as US pulls back

While the EU and several European countries made significant contributions to GAVI, the global vaccine alliance, the United States was notably absent from the donor list.

00:00At the high-level pledging event in Brussels, the Gavi Vaccine Alliance rallied international
00:07donors to fund its next five-year program. Contributions came from the EU and several
00:13European countries too, without, however, any support from the US. So far, Gavi has secured
00:19over 7.7 billion euros, less than its target, but with more pledges expected in the coming
00:25weeks. Gavi is a global health
00:54partnership launched in 2000 to improve vaccine access for children in the world's poorest
01:00nations. Since then, the alliance has helped vaccinate over a billion children and are estimated
01:06it has saved 19 million lives. Now, it aims to reach 500,000 million more children by 2030.
01:14At the Brussels summit, European leaders, including those from Spain, Ireland, Greece and Croatia,
01:19pledged increased support. The European Commission also reaffirmed its commitment.
01:24Today is the moment to reaffirm our engagement. And I am proud to say that Europe will continue
01:33to contribute. Team Europe is Gavi's largest donor. And today,
01:39today I am pleased to pledge 360 million euros to Gavi at this summit.
01:48Major donors also included the United Kingdom and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, notably
01:54absent the United States. A long-time Gavi backer, the US has announced it will no longer provide funding,
02:01part of a broader move to cut international aid under President Donald Trump's administration.
