00:08Have you seen these blocky and highly decorated Roblox avatars that look like they're trying to tap into the nostalgia of the early days of the game, but not quite nailing it?
00:16That, according to some Roblox gamers, is Retro Slop.
00:19It's unclear who first coined the term as it relates directly to Roblox, but it seems to be criticizing players who misrepresent the Retro Roblox aesthetic by poorly mixing Retro Aesthetic Items and Accessories, sometimes described as those released between 2006 and 2013 with modern items and accessories.
00:35Use of the term seemed to kick off around January of 2025, with one of the earliest examples being this Reddit post which uses a similar term, Retro Bateslop, to label a starter pack meme showing elements within the game that qualify the style.
00:48In late May, the term started to become increasingly popularized in Roblox communities, as people began posting memes and further criticizing Roblox players' avatars dressed in a way that they don't feel truly represents the Retro Aesthetic.
00:59The term spread through various posts to subreddits like r slash Roblox avatars and through Roblox creators on TikTok.
01:06For example, on June 18th, TikToker Blockboy192 posted a comedy video in which a Roblox player enters an experience and is harassed by a Retro Slop player demanding Retro Aesthetics.
01:17The TikTok garnered over 2.3 million views in 5 days.

01:24The criticism of this style has some Roblox players leaning into it more, often to troll those who despise it.
01:29Like TikToker Elio Ah, who posted a video June 19th captioned,
01:34New Ragebait Method Discovered, in which, dressed in Retro Slop, he chases a player around a room who keeps saying,
01:39Oh my mama, get this Retro Slop out of here, bro.
01:42That video spread to Twitter, where it garnered over 4 million views in a few days, and even became sort of a meme in itself.
01:48More content surrounding the term would try to identify what made something retro compared to Retro Slop,
01:53or poke fun at the hate for or virality of Retro Slop in general.
