00:00How did this model become known for looking like an ancient Greek towel boy?
00:04Most models are known for their beautiful appearance, and until 2022,
00:08so was Italian model and influencer Gio Scotti. Giovanna Scotti has racked up millions of
00:13followers across social media platforms, where she posts content like lipdubs,
00:17makeup tutorials, and other content showing off her beauty, sometimes speaking to the
00:21viewer in Italian. She's collaborated with high-end brands like Prada and Armani,
00:27and overall is a somewhat respected figure in fashion. So how did she become the face of this
00:31weird Greek towel boy meme? It all started with a single tweet. In May of 2022, Twitter user
00:37HinduStallion5 posted a since-deleted tweet, attaching one of Scotti's TikTok videos where
00:42she has short hair, and captioning it, this is what 13-year-old boys looked like in ancient Greece,
00:47and then another line that ties in a certain factoid about ancient Greek society. If you don't know,
00:52ancient Greece is often discussed online for its controversial and widely debated historical
00:56customs, particularly those related to power dynamics and relationships that would be considered
01:01highly inappropriate today. According to HinduStallion5, Gio is what they imagined young
01:06boys involved in such power dynamics would look like, even though Gio is in fact Italian, not Greek,
01:12and is in fact an adult woman and not an adolescent boy. But the user took it a step further,
01:17making an uncomfortable joke that seemed to sympathize with those outdated and deeply problematic
01:21views. Some on Twitter were quick to call out the user for the odd statement, even after the tweet
01:26was deleted. Others apparently thought he was onto something, and would start to spread the same
01:30message, alongside pictures or videos of Gio. Like user Schizofreak, who in October of 2022,
01:36posted a video of Gio with a similarly bizarre and provocative message, once again tying her
01:41appearance to ancient Roman or Greek stereotypes. Another Twitter user shared a similar but more
01:46explicit sentiment, which garnered over 3 million views in just three days. The tweets inspired
01:51discourse about the comparison once again, with many pointing out just how inane the entire concept
01:55seemed. The discourse eventually got so big as to make its way back to Gio, who responded to it in
02:00February of 2023. She posted a response in Italian and an Instagram story in English which read,
02:06For those who don't speak Italian, I'm referring to the meme of months ago, according to which I
02:10should be a 13-year-old Greek boy. And since I don't use Twitter, I have only now discovered
02:14everything that is being created behind it. I don't even know what to think.
02:17After the meme was introduced, it wasn't long before the internet found other notable women
02:22with which to compare to ancient Greek towel boys. The next victim was German professional
02:26soccer player Charlotte Boll. Several notable tweets surfaced, also looping her into the meme,
02:31noting her particular kind of ancient Greek boy-adjacent beauty. Memes about Gio Scottie
02:35and the Greek towel boy discourse are still common to see, as many still equate feminine beauty with
02:40outdated and inappropriate archetypes in uncomfortable ways. What do you think about Gio Scottie and the
02:45ancient Greek towel boy meme? Let us know in the comments, and make sure to like and subscribe
