00:00However big or small, our homes should be a haven.
00:04I really need Clean It Fix It's help.
00:07Hi!
00:07But we're all feeling the pinch at the moment.
00:10Where to start?
00:11I hate DIY because I'm terrible at it.
00:14I think it's important to know your limitations.
00:16Awful.
00:17What on earth is that?
00:18It's not always easy keeping a house in order.
00:21I'm going to clean it.
00:22Tommy's going to fix it.
00:25Spot on.
00:25Simple as that.
00:27But you can take back control of your home.
00:29Look at the slug, he's got his own bar.
00:31Ooh, that's massive.
00:32With clever, common sense hacks.
00:34Sips.
00:35Come back up again.
00:37All done on a shoestring.
00:40From the old to the new.
00:42Wow!
00:43This is deeply unbelief.
00:45Sometimes I'm just too good.
00:47We'll show you how you can make life-changing improvements in just 24 hours.
00:52This is actually my house.
00:54And on a next-to-nothing budget.
00:56I'm an asset!
00:57With better use and a spruce-up of your space.
01:01Wow!
01:02This is amazing.
01:04Oh!
01:07Oh, my word.
01:10No way!
01:11This is not our room.
01:13Never have.
01:13Of course you can, my pleasure.
01:15Our team of experts is here to help.
01:22Asha!
01:23Whoa!
01:24Do you reckon you can clean it?
01:26Anything can clean.
01:27We're cooking on gas.
01:28Master builder Tommy Walsh brings over 50 years of DIY experience.
01:33Look at that.
01:34You can actually dance on that.
01:36Looks good, doesn't it?
01:37Maxine Dwyer runs one of the UK's top extreme cleaning companies.
01:43Proof is in the pudding.
01:45Dirt is in the sponge.
01:47And creative carpenter Asha Edwards prides himself on being a perfectionist.
01:52You can tell I've done this before, can't you?
01:54A work of art.
01:56Cheers.
01:56Cheers.
01:56So which household needs the team's help today?
02:03I really need the Clean It Fix It team to come and help me so that I can actually have
02:08a creative space to work and start making things again.
02:13Before Eleanor became a full-time NHS support officer, she used to teach textiles and crafting.
02:19I'm really passionate about crafting, textiles, art, anything creative, really.
02:25I do quite a lot of knitting, crochet, embroidery.
02:30I think textiles has taken over my life.
02:32Now she wants to teach new students part-time at a two-bedroom flat in Crystal Palace.
02:38I used to do a lot of private lessons.
02:41It's obviously another form of income for me as well, and to make my goods and sell them,
02:46to help out alongside my current income from the NHS.
02:50The spare room could be the ideal space to craft and teach, but with little storage and
02:58a small flat, it's become stuffed with Eleanor's belongings and art equipment.
03:01So just walking into my spare room now.
03:07So here I've got my sewing machine and my drum carder and some embroidery threads.
03:13I've also got loads of boxes of shoes and some more bedding here.
03:17I've also got a bookshelf full of books and other bits and pieces that it would be great
03:23not to have stacked up in here.
03:26I don't really have a space to work at the moment.
03:30There's not really any surface that I can work from.
03:33The storage chaos has spread to other parts of the flat too.
03:37I ended up having to move everything into my living room, which meant that the living room
03:42also wasn't really a relaxing place.
03:44It then became kind of an area of work.
03:48Here we have the old fireplace, which is covered in stuff, so I can't really use the area.
03:55Space is so limited, the washing machine sits at one end of the hallway.
04:01It's kind of the only area of the flat that actually had a bit of storage in it with the
04:05washing machine, so it's certainly a utility area.
04:09However, it would be good to use the area a bit better, because currently I've got my
04:14laundry drying in the spare room, which isn't ideal.
04:18The lack of order and overflowing textiles are also making it difficult to keep the flat clean.
04:23I find the filter in the vacuum cleaner gets really clogged up with all the little fibres.
04:29They get all matted.
04:30I found it also has that similar effect on the washing machine.
04:33And now Eleanor's flat is attracting attention from a household pest.
04:37There is a little bit of a clothes moth problem in the building, so it's really important that
04:43I try and get that under control so that they don't eat my textiles.
04:46I would absolutely love for cleaning it, fix it to come and help me.
04:51It would just take her weight off my shoulders.
04:56Today is the big clean and fix.
04:59With the team arriving shortly, Eleanor heads out to give them free reign in her home.
05:05And show you can make a difference in just 24 hours and on a limited budget.
05:10I think this is the building.
05:14Apparently it used to be a bank.
05:17Shall we go and check and see if they've left the safe open?
05:19Come on then.
05:19Oh yes.
05:20Come on look.
05:24What floor is it by the way?
05:26Third floor.
05:31There we are.
05:33It's nice and compact.
05:35This is a utility area.
05:39It's a bit unorthodox, being welcomed by the washing machine.
05:42But as a utility space, you're going to have to make that work a little bit better.
05:46Yes, because what Eleanor's doing is putting all of her stuff in that area there and it's
05:51a bit, yeah.
05:52It looks a little cluttered.
05:53Yeah.
05:53A little bit congested, just a bit.
05:55Definitely.
05:56Shall we have a look around the rest of the flat?
05:57Yes.
06:02Oh, the living room.
06:03You really can see Eleanor's personality in there.
06:06It's a lovely space, actually, but it's a little bit cluttered.
06:09I think we also need to make better use of the space in here as well.
06:15It needs a little bit of organisation.
06:17Yeah, this should turn out to be quite a nice room.
06:21Yeah, yeah.
06:21Shall we check out the rest of the flat?
06:23Come on in.
06:23Oh, wow.
06:30There's a lot going on in here.
06:32Oh.
06:33And I thought the dumping ground was outside.
06:36It's here.
06:37It's in here.
06:38Look at this.
06:39You're going to have your work car out today, aren't we?
06:41You're doing this.
06:42This must be your work zone.
06:44Yeah.
06:44You can see all of her tools and boxes with all her bits and bobs.
06:48And there's two spinning wheels.
06:50Look, there.
06:51That one and that one there.
06:52It's like she hasn't unpacked.
06:54Sort of half moved in.
06:55Yeah.
06:56All these boxes, everything's going to have to be sorted out, isn't it?
06:59Yeah, definitely.
07:00Put in its right place.
07:02And the sewing machine needs a table.
07:04Probably pretty important we help organise and put this together for her.
07:08I think we need to maybe add a bit of permanent colour as well.
07:11Yeah, all of the walls are white in this whole flat.
07:14Well, that's good to reflect light, but occasionally it's nice to have a feature wall.
07:18A little bit of colour, yeah.
07:19Let's crack on, yeah?
07:20Let's do it.
07:21Definitely.
07:23With an unsightly hallway, a cluttered living room and a spare room that's become a dumping ground,
07:28the team have their work cut out today.
07:32In the hallway utility area, Tommy must create new storage solutions to make better use of the space,
07:38while Maxine will reorder the existing storage and deep clean the washing machine.
07:44In the living room, Tommy will build new shelving within the existing fireplace,
07:49while Maxine must find a solution to keep the moths at bay.
07:53And in the spare room, Asha must construct a new workstation big enough for Eleanor to teach her students
07:59and reorganise the clutter, while Tommy will paint a colourful feature wall.
08:05Any extra clutter will be set to one side for Eleanor to go through later.
08:10With so much to do, there's not a moment to waste.
08:12In the living room, Tommy wants to create a calm and inspiring relaxation space for artistic Eleanor.
08:35I love collecting craft books because they're a big source of kind of inspiration.
08:41When you're looking to start a new project, it would be amazing at the moment,
08:47because they're all in boxes, to actually have somewhere that I can sit and actually enjoy them and be inspired.
08:53Tommy thinks the ornamental fireplace could solve the problem.
08:59I'm going to put some shelves in here for added storage,
09:03and then she can sit in this corner and it can become a reader's corner.
09:08So we'll fully utilise this space.
09:11Also, we have the result of an award-winning degree there on the wall.
09:16It's resting on the light, which is not ideal.
09:20So we want to put support in there, and we're going to use a hat stand, wire it up, and make sure that's more secure.
09:27I've never been on close-up terms with a lobster of that sort of size,
09:31and if they're in British waters, I think I'm going to move.
09:35In the utility area, Maxine's ready to begin her deep clean of Eleanor's washing machine, starting with the drawer.
09:43People very often forget to clean their washing machines.
09:47They just dump their clothes in and pull them out.
09:50It's very important to wash your washing machine, because if you don't, it will start smelling.
09:55It will harbour bacteria.
09:58Washing at low temperatures, though important for the planet,
10:01provides the perfect warm and humid environment for germs to grow.
10:05At the top will be dirt.
10:08Have a look at this.
10:10Can you see this?
10:12We'll put it in some soapy water for about half an hour.
10:17Soaking the drawer in hot water and washing up liquid will soften the detergent residue,
10:22making it easier to clean later.
10:24And while that is soaking, I'm going to clean out the inside of the drawer, where it's come from.
10:31Full of bacteria.
10:33You clean it with a toothbrush and washing up liquid.
10:36Let me show you how I do it.
10:38There you go.
10:40You just dab it on and scrub away.
10:45Scrub in circular motions.
10:47It's coming on wonderful.
10:48Just brush it like you're brushing your teeth.
10:50Simple.
10:52Easy.
10:52Look at this.
10:54Let's go like this and that's it.
10:55If scum and mould are difficult to remove, Maxine has another tip.
11:00So I'm going to put some more washing up liquid there and sprinkle some baking soda on it.
11:06Now this will give this a bit more clout when it comes to the stubborn bits.
11:10I can see it working already.
11:14Baking soda is a gentle abrasive and will help loosen residue.
11:18It's smelling wonderful.
11:20It's smelling so much better.
11:23Right, there's a bit at the back as well that I can't quite get, so I've come in with a sponge.
11:27Soppy sponge!
11:28Right, there's this side right here.
11:31Try and get it as best I can.
11:33I'm going to cut this.
11:35This will be able to fit in between the little grooves and stuff.
11:39Asha's kindly given me a minute scissors.
11:42Thanks, Asha!
11:44I asked for a scissors, you give me a petite one!
11:47It matches your style.
11:49Yeah, petite, guys!
11:52Thank you!
11:53And I've got a petite sponge now, look.
11:55A big one won't do it, you see, so this one will.
11:58See, look at that, it just goes in there.
12:00You see, the big one will never go in there.
12:02The toothbrush cannot go in there, but this is perfect.
12:09I'm going to spritz this now.
12:11I'm spraying white vinegar.
12:15This will give it a good old rinse and make it smell even fresher.
12:19Vinegar is also antibacterial, so it'll help to keep germs at bay.
12:24Job done!
12:26Wow!
12:28The cluttered spare room is dashing Eleanor's hopes of teaching new students
12:34and generating more income.
12:36So Asha needs to turn it into an artist's studio.
12:39Okie dokie, I have some handy flat-pack furniture, nothing too spectacular, nice and simple.
12:51But my plan is to create two units that are very similar to this, and make them the base of a work table.
13:03Of course, we brought this second hand, so there's no instructions.
13:07But I'll be able to figure it out piece by piece somehow.
13:14It's not that complicated.
13:15It's a little bit complicated.
13:16It's a little bit complicated.
13:25It's the first action.
13:27It's a little bit complicated.
13:28Why is it a little bit short?
13:29Let go.
13:30I'm Hallo!
13:31It's just like a puzzle, and once you get the momentum going, it all clips together.
13:42For missing flat pack instructions, a good tip is to check online.
13:47It's important not to over tighten any screws when you are assembling furniture.
13:54If you do, you tend to damage the screw holes.
13:58And when it comes to reassembling the furniture, it will be a nightmare.
14:03Beautiful. One down, one to go.
14:08My plan is to have two of these units next to each other, so that's double the storage
14:14from underneath my nice big work surface.
14:19In the lounge, Tommy's turning the fireplace into a mini library by constructing new shelving
14:24inside.
14:25And there's evidence of Eleanor's unwanted visitors even here.
14:28You can see there's a slight moth problem here.
14:31This is a moth killer.
14:32They stick to it.
14:33It's not very comfortable when they stick to you, though.
14:37Moth paper is saturated in insecticide, which kills the moths.
14:41Another sticky with some more moths on it.
14:45Actually, the moths go for the most valuable quality wall.
14:48That's what they go for.
14:50And if you don't address the issue, you'll lose all your best clothes.
14:54And that's all down to those little so-and-sos.
14:57Adult moths lay their eggs in natural fibres like wool, which contain a protein called
15:02keratin that the hatched larvae feed on.
15:05So we're going to have three shelves.
15:07It's very important at this stage to do the actual measuring out and the levelling in for
15:13the battens.
15:15Get that correct.
15:16Because otherwise, every time you come in here and sit down, if it's wonky, you'll see it.
15:21And it will drive you crazy.
15:35With the fireplace battens cut, Tommy needs the right screws to hold the new shelves in
15:39place.
15:40Because we're going to make this take a bit of weight, we're using the brown plugs, which
15:45are bigger and tougher, and the long 70mm screws.
15:51Those shouldn't be fixed to masonry walls without a wall plug to hold them securely in place.
15:57Brown plugs hold long screws for heavier loads, like book-laden shelves.
16:02That's it.
16:03Now, all I've got to do is get Asher to actually cut the shelves for me, and then I can fit them.
16:15And there's a speedy way to get his shelf dimensions down to the ground floor.
16:19Perfect.
16:20Give me five minutes, I'll bring them up to you.
16:24Right, got Tommy's measurements.
16:26Got the MDF.
16:28Just need to cut it to size for him.
16:30Too many contrasting textures and colours in small spaces can make a room feel busy.
16:40The opposite effect Tommy wants to create.
16:42When you're putting up shelves using the batten system, it's always a good idea to touch the
16:49wood in with some primer and undercoat and top coat.
16:52Because once you've painted them out in white or the colour of the wall, they disappear.
16:58In the utility area, Maxine's moving on to the next part of the washing machine deep clean.
17:03Now that the drawer's done, we're going to look in the drum.
17:06We have a seal.
17:07We're going to look in the seal of the drum right here.
17:09Oh, look.
17:10Surprise, surprise.
17:11Socks.
17:12Woo!
17:13I'm going to put them there for now.
17:16I've also found with the washing machine as well, because it gets fluff in it, then when
17:22I put my smart work clothes in there, quite often they're coming out covered in fibres.
17:27So it's quite difficult when the two worlds collide.
17:30Well, this is the place that we always miss.
17:35I guarantee you we always miss it.
17:38Plus, if you don't miss it and you do here, you probably never do here.
17:43And here is full of fluff as well.
17:46So yeah, look at that.
17:47See my hands?
17:48You've got to clean it all the way round.
17:50Yep.
17:51Fluff, fluff, fluff, fluff.
17:54You clean it with washing up liquid.
17:57And I'm just going to put a dab on there, as I always do.
18:00So I'm going to...
18:02Let's clean the top bit.
18:05Wow!
18:08Look at this.
18:11I told you there's lots of fluff in this fluffy washing machine.
18:14I guarantee you, you go home and do this tonight.
18:17When you get home, you'll be surprised.
18:19You will be surprised.
18:20This, if you don't clean it, will go black.
18:23Once the seal's gone black, it's black.
18:25You can't change it.
18:26You can't go back.
18:28Then you're going to have to get a new seal and it's going to cost you a lot of money.
18:32A black seal indicates where mould or mildew has grown into the porous rubber.
18:37Cleaning your washing machine regularly will keep the problem at bay.
18:41Right, I'm happy the seal is clean.
18:44Now I'm going to be cleaning the drawer.
18:47This has been soaking for half an hour.
18:50So it should be good to just come up nice now.
18:53Sponscara.
18:56If it's tough stains, add a bit of baking powder.
19:00Look at this, it's coming on.
19:03Give it a bit of a rinse and then you'll be able to see where you're at.
19:08All done.
19:09Just going to put the drawer back in now.
19:14Outside, Asha's giving Tommy a hand with the shelves for the fireplace library.
19:19Now the problem is, the area isn't square, meaning that it's not all straight 90 degrees.
19:27But Tommy is giving me the perfect measurements where he's giving me the back dimension and the front dimension.
19:37The shelves are made from white MDF to save Tommy more painting as today's schedule is tight.
19:43Hopefully they all fit.
19:46There you go Tommy, three shelves cut to size.
19:49Oh lovely, just as I finished the painting, so thank you for that.
19:53Ready to slot in, if I hand you the top one.
20:05I've done it.
20:06Lovely.
20:08That looks nice, that's jolly good.
20:10Alright then Tommy, I'll leave you to it.
20:13One shelf down, two to go.
20:17That's perfect, that is.
20:20Maxine has also almost finished her washing machine deep clean.
20:25I'm going to clean the filter, however, just be careful.
20:29Because if you don't drain the machine before you open the filter, water will be chucked out onto your floor, tiles, carpet, wooden floor, whatever you call it.
20:40And we don't want that to happen.
20:42Washing machines retain some water after a wash, but Maxine has a tip to stop a leak from happening.
20:48And there is a drain and spin facility.
20:52A drain cycle should remove any excess water, but it's always best to have a tray or towels on standby when you open the filter.
20:59Oh, look at this, wow.
21:02Here we go!
21:04Oh, look, the water's seeping, can you see that?
21:07It's a good job I drained it, because this will be a lot more than this.
21:10The pump filter protects the pump from a build-up of fibres from the clothes and other obstructions like coins.
21:17If it gets blocked, the drum won't drain properly.
21:20Yep, soak it up.
21:22It's stopped trickling.
21:25Safe to uncork it now.
21:27Come on out now.
21:28Come on.
21:29There we go.
21:32Look at this.
21:34A hair grip.
21:36Oh.
21:37Well, first of all, I'm going to put this in here.
21:39This is not great for the washing machine at all.
21:42Look, another hair grip.
21:44This is a good reason why you've got to keep your filter clean.
21:47To spray some white vinegar in the hole.
21:51A bit of washing-up liquid on your toothbrush.
21:55And then a bit of a washing, just like this.
22:00A clogged filter can leave behind unwanted detergent residue and a bad smell on your clean clothes.
22:07That's the filter cleaned.
22:09I'm going to pop it back in now.
22:12Don't forget, when you push it in, you have to tighten it up.
22:15If you don't tighten it up, you'll flood your kitchen.
22:19Right, last but not least, we're going to rinse out the drum.
22:23Now, this will sanitise the washing machine.
22:26One cup of white vinegar in the drum, and this will get rid of all the bacteria and the smelly, ongy smells in there.
22:33We'll pour it direct into the drum.
22:35Close the drawer and put it on a 60 cycle.
22:38The vinegar will also help keep on top of limescale builder, which can damage your heating element and corrode your pipes, leading to an expensive repair bill.
22:49Job done.
22:50In the spare room, Ash has finished his second flat pack assembly.
22:57He'll combine these two units with Eleanor's original storage shelf.
23:00So, I want to chuck this third one on top.
23:09And my plan is to cut a nice big sheet of MDF from there to here.
23:17And from there, with a slight overhang.
23:25So, that is a massive worktop area.
23:29Making sure there's plenty overhang.
23:32So, we can tuck a chair underneath.
23:35You've got storage cubes on this side, storage cubes on that side, storage cubes on top.
23:47How much more storage do you want?
23:53Ash is also using pre-painted MDF.
23:56But if you have the time, you can buy standard MDF for half the price and paint it yourself.
24:00Right, that's sorted.
24:04I can just bring this up now.
24:07And the worktop shall fit perfectly in place.
24:17With the morning over, the team deserve a quick tea break.
24:22Cup of tea.
24:23Thanks, Maxine.
24:24You're welcome, no worries.
24:25Very kind of you, very considerate.
24:27No problem.
24:28How's your washing machine looking?
24:30It's looking beautiful.
24:31It's got to be the cleanest washing machine in London.
24:33I know you're right.
24:36I think Eleanor works for the NHS, doesn't she?
24:39She works for the NHS, yes.
24:40But she also finds that she has to work at her arts and crafts.
24:46Get a little bit more money.
24:48Because the cost of living is the innocent crisis, you know?
24:51It is, yeah.
24:52A lot of youngsters nowadays just can't get enough money in their chosen career.
24:56True.
24:57And they have to have a back-up plan.
24:58Yeah?
24:59She's still doing what she loves.
25:00That's good.
25:01Yeah.
25:02Which is brilliant.
25:03Funny enough, so am I.
25:05Still doing...
25:06What's that, sitting sipping tea?
25:07Yeah.
25:09And with Eleanor returning very soon, they need to crack on.
25:14Maxine must find a solution to the flat's fabric munching moths.
25:18Asher must finish the new workstation.
25:21And Tommy must attach new storage solutions in the utility area.
25:24But before he does that, he's going to nip in and paint a feature wall in the spare room while Asher's outside.
25:33Wow.
25:34What a vivacious colour.
25:36The reason I've chosen yellow is that yellow is Eleanor's favourite colour.
25:40And I think this will fit in beautifully with all the bright colour right round the flat.
25:46Right.
25:47Let's get some on the wall.
25:51I always recommend you put the lid on because it's a real likelihood that you will knock that over and it will go all over your floor and your carpet and ruin the whole project.
26:03This room is also going to be where she teaches and trains people to do the craft work.
26:15So it's really important that you have a bright outlook, you know.
26:19It just lifts everyone's spirits.
26:22The colour yellow is said to represent a love of learning.
26:26So it's perfect in a room destined for teaching.
26:34Eleanor's flat is filled with her designs and textile supplies.
26:38But they're attracting attention from a destructive household pest.
26:43I've tried really hard to keep things in boxes to save them from the moths.
26:49I'd really need help to try and kind of win the battle against those which I'm losing at the moment.
26:58The insect stickers Eleanor's using in the flat only trap a few of the bugs.
27:01Maxine has a chemical free idea to help fend off more.
27:06Eleanor works with a lot of wool.
27:09She makes her own wool.
27:11She spins it.
27:13However, moths love wool.
27:16I've got a natural solution to repel those moths because they do not like the smell of this natural concoction.
27:24Moths dislike the aromas of strong herbs like lavender, rosemary, bay and thyme.
27:29So that's three teaspoons of lavender.
27:33Oh, lavender.
27:35When you start to smell like lavender, you know you're turning into your nan.
27:39I'm putting in chamomile now.
27:42Lovely.
27:43Next step is to put some rosemary in this.
27:47This is going to smell glorious.
27:49We're going to put some time in it to finish this repellent off.
27:53We don't want to kill them. We just want to scare them off.
27:56Give them a bit of a scare. No, you do not come here.
27:59Stay out of this drawer. Stay out of this wardrobe.
28:01It's as simple as that.
28:03Oh, what's that food?
28:04This is insect repellent.
28:06I've got all those ingredients in my back garden.
28:08Have you?
28:09Yeah. So what's that for then?
28:11Well, this is to repel the moths.
28:14You know when they used to make wardrobes many years ago?
28:17Yeah.
28:18They would use a certain type of wood for the backing that would actually turn off moths so they wouldn't go into the wardrobe.
28:25Look at that.
28:26He knows everything, doesn't he?
28:29All right, cheers.
28:30Bye.
28:32Tommy's referring to woods like cedar which contain a moth repelling oil.
28:36You can buy packs of cedarwood moth rings to fit in drawers or place on clothes hangers.
28:43I'm going to put them in these bags.
28:45Half filler bag.
28:46One, two.
28:48Yes.
28:49And don't forget to put your bay leaves in.
28:52Absolutely glorious and beautiful.
28:55So once you've done this, you put these in the drawer.
28:59And this will send them flying.
29:02There you go. Look at that.
29:04One bag done.
29:06When your bags begin to lose their smell, you simply refill them with a new mix of herbs.
29:12Wow.
29:13Look at this yellow.
29:16Tommy's done a really good job of that.
29:19OK, I can move this so far.
29:21You know what?
29:22This is definitely better as a two-man job.
29:26Tommy?
29:27Yes, mate.
29:28Please, I need a hand moving this sofa.
29:31I'm really loving this colour.
29:32Yeah.
29:33It's come out really well, hasn't it?
29:34I'm really loving this sofa.
29:35I might give this a try.
29:36A bit more.
29:38Yeah, I think that'll do it.
29:39Yeah, that looks really nice against the yellow.
29:41It complements it really well.
29:43Yeah.
29:46Asher can now combine his super-sized storage unit and his cut desktop to create Eleanor's new workstation.
29:55Storage up high.
29:58Plenty of storage down below.
30:00And a nice big area to do the sewing.
30:05All I need to do now is screw and fix this all together.
30:12Clothes moths lay their eggs on any natural fibre, so Eleanor's handmade woolen rugs could also be harbouring them.
30:19Here we go, I'm pounding the rug.
30:22It's a good workout.
30:24That's for sure.
30:26Look, all of that has dropped off it.
30:28Absolutely amazing.
30:30Well, you beat it first, you pound it, beat it, and then you vacuum it after.
30:36If an item is infested with eggs and larvae, try sealing it in a bag and deep-freezing for two weeks to eliminate them.
30:42Once your precious fibres are moth-free, enclosed storage can be helpful.
30:49Now, we've sourced this cabinet online for next to nothing.
30:55It was a steal we couldn't refuse.
30:58And it's going to be perfect for storing all of the cottons and natural fibres that the moths tend to chew and eat up.
31:05Maxine has also armed me with her secret solutions and some cedar wood.
31:14Both natural remedies to help keep the moths away.
31:18It looks great.
31:21The team is on a roll and Tommy has his own hack for solving Eleanor's next problem.
31:26Where to dry her clothes.
31:29I've decided that we should make this area into a dedicated utility area.
31:33This is going to be on the wall here.
31:39And when you want to hang out some washing, you open these two things, put out the rail,
31:44and you're going to hack this out a proper drying rack.
31:47And then when it's finished, you take the clothes off, shut it like that,
31:52and no one would know what it was for.
31:54So it's a clever bit of kit.
31:55Unlike most internal drying racks, this wall hanging version won't take up valuable floor space.
32:04Fold it into the middle.
32:07Shut the doors.
32:09That's a small job with a big impact.
32:12Smart vertical storage on the opposite wall will take care of the long coats and bags Eleanor has boxed up.
32:17But extra care must be taken.
32:20Well, the reason I've put this coat hook here is because we've got to bear in mind this consumer unit,
32:28electric consumer unit.
32:29Now that would normally have the cables coming straight down and going straight up at right angles.
32:36So this is quite a way away.
32:38But the next one I just want to test with a cable tester so it's all clear behind here.
32:45So then I don't have to worry about having a shocking outcome.
32:49A cable tester, which can be picked up from a hardware store, tells you where a live electrical wire is sitting behind the plasterboard.
32:58There we go, no cables there.
33:01With the all clear, Tommy can now safely attach the second coat hook.
33:06That's it, and another job done.
33:10With time almost up, the team needs to give it a final push.
33:15I've got this handy pegboard we've picked up from online, and it serves so many different functions.
33:26It comes with a load of different attachments that you can hook any way you like.
33:33It comes with little trays as well, and you can move it about wherever you need.
33:39I have got some pop-up boxes for Eleanor's stuff.
33:45I'll start with the laundry stuff in here.
33:48Reorganising the utility area's chaotic storage will help Eleanor find things more quickly,
33:54especially if different categories have dedicated boxes.
33:57The stuff at the top of here are the non-everyday items.
34:03Down here, the everyday, most important stuff, the washing, and the shoes.
34:09And that's it. All finished and done.
34:12There we go.
34:14This will keep the mops away from this lovely area.
34:16With Eleanor returning shortly, there's just time for some finishing touches.
34:29Now, I didn't make this, I managed to get hold of it, but we're going to adapt it because it's a hatch stand,
34:34and we're going to adapt it to being a lobster stand.
34:39A few last-minute adjustments.
34:41And there's one other thing as well.
34:43There's some of Maxine's magic mix for the mops.
34:49Look at that. It just looks like it's framed perfectly.
34:57And they're done.
34:58So, with 24 hours and a limited budget, has the Clean It, Fix It team managed to make the cluttered rooms in the flat far more practical for Eleanor to live in and teach her students?
35:15It's been a long day.
35:16It has.
35:17But we've got it done as always.
35:18Yeah, time to go home.
35:20Let's get some rest.
35:22Maxine and Asha depart.
35:23Leaving Tommy behind to greet Eleanor.
35:31We hope you enjoy your new space from the Clean It, Fix It team.
35:36Hello, Eleanor. Welcome home.
35:38Come and have a look, then. You can lead the way.
35:42Before the team arrived, the small utility area was unsightly, while the washing machine was in danger of clogging from all of Eleanor's textiles.
35:53But Tommy's fold-away clothes dryer and coat hooks and Maxine's reorganised storage makes the area fit for purpose and far smarter.
36:02While Maxine's washing machine deep clean means it's now fluff-free.
36:09Oh, wow.
36:10I love it. I love the green.
36:12And all them boxes have been reorganised and Maxine spent a lot of time thoroughly cleaning this washing machine.
36:18Oh, perfect.
36:19Both inside and out.
36:20So it's not fluffy anymore.
36:21No.
36:22Oh, amazing.
36:23But we've made that into a pure utility space.
36:26And we've got this clever fold-away hanger for your clothes.
36:29And it's very small, so it's not going to get in the way of anything.
36:33I've never seen one of those before.
36:35I'll put that like that.
36:37Oh, wow.
36:38And that's your clothes dryer.
36:39It's such a space saver.
36:41Isn't it clever?
36:42I can walk through my hallway now.
36:44Well, I'm glad you like it.
36:46It looks so neat.
36:47It looks really fresh now.
36:49It doesn't look just like a dumping ground.
36:52Eleanor's impressed with the utility room.
36:54Will she feel the same about the lounge?
36:58Earlier, it was full of clutter and unsuited to relaxation,
37:02with no storage space for Eleanor's textile books.
37:05And her prize degree artwork was dangling on a light fixture.
37:09But Tommy's fireplace library provides a neat and inspiring reading corner.
37:18Her prized artwork is safely suspended on the hat stand.
37:22And Maxine's reorganised the furnishings and tidied the room.
37:27Oh, wow.
37:28Oh, my gosh.
37:29It's amazing.
37:30It's completely different.
37:32I love the chair being there in the sunlight.
37:35Yeah, well, we thought it gives you the chance to sit down and rest and reach over for the books.
37:42Now, the shelves were made to go into the space so that rather than just having it piled up in the boxes,
37:48at least now it's something nice to look at because they're full depth.
37:52Yeah, they're nice and deep, aren't they?
37:54Yeah, so you can put lots of stuff at the back and have the books at the front to cover it up.
37:59And you sit comfortably in that chair with a different perspective on the room.
38:03Yeah.
38:04Oh, wow.
38:05And what about?
38:06Oh, the lobster's standing up again.
38:08But it also gives you your lamp back.
38:10It gives you the lamp, yeah.
38:11So that's back in the middle.
38:13What you see hanging on there is an anti-moth mixture that Maxine's made up for you
38:18and put around the flat to get rid of the moths.
38:21Brilliant.
38:22It's just so much more than I thought it would be.
38:24I love it.
38:25So now we've got to go to the pièce de résistance.
38:28I'm so excited.
38:31Time for the most important transformation.
38:35Before, the spare room had become a disorganised dumping ground for Eleanor's craft supplies and textiles.
38:41Many boxed up to protect them from moths.
38:44There was no workspace to create or teach new students and she didn't have enough storage.
38:52Now, Ash has reconfigured the space and built a new workstation to give Eleanor ample room to work and teach.
38:59His use of vertical storage preserves floor space and his cabinet protects Eleanor's most precious items.
39:05Tommy's yellow painted feature wall adds much needed colour while one of Maxine's clean rugs takes pride of place.
39:14Oh my gosh.
39:16Wow.
39:17Oh my gosh, it's like I'm in someone else's house.
39:19It's so sunny and yellow as well.
39:22It's lovely.
39:24Wow.
39:25That's insane.
39:27Colour is a very important thing for you.
39:29So we thought it would be nice as a backdrop there in that lovely full yellow colour.
39:35Yeah.
39:36And now you've got a station here so you could be teaching someone who's training sitting at the other side.
39:43This has been made by Asha, put together.
39:46Eleanor, we got you some clothes storage because of the moth issue that you had.
39:51So we opened that up.
39:52Oh no, fantastic.
39:53I can smell the lavender.
39:55There's bay leaves and chamomile.
39:57Smells really nice, actually.
39:58And it works.
39:59It's nice enough to eat as well, actually.
40:02Proper studio.
40:03It's so much more than I thought you could do in a day.
40:06Well, it's more than I thought I could do in a day, actually.
40:09It's a proper sewing room.
40:10It's a proper workshop.
40:12Yeah, I mean, you could do some serious work up here.
40:16Yeah, no, I'm so impressed.
40:18And also we've got a pegboard up there and that can take all the different bows and delicate pieces that can be hung.
40:25Easy to get to the wall.
40:26I can't wait to start opening everything and exploring everything.
40:30But I'm also itching to get working.
40:34It's like what I had access to when I was studying, which is really a nice thing to go back to.
40:39I can't believe how big this room was.
40:42It was just...
40:44I didn't ever come in here.
40:46I didn't come in here since I moved in.
40:49And now it's like...
40:51It's very inviting.
40:52It's worth it, yeah.
40:57I'm a bit overwhelmed.
40:59Are you happy with the three major elements that we've done while we were here?
41:05I couldn't be more happy.
41:06I'm going to leave you to explore your new space.
41:14And I'm really glad that you're happy with the Clean It Fix It team.
41:18So happy.
41:19I better get working now.
41:20Yeah.
41:21And on that note, I'm going to love you and leave you because...
41:24Thank you so much.
41:25I've got to go and start getting ready for the next one.
41:28Bye-bye.
41:30It's amazing.
41:32It's like a completely different space.
41:36If I was really lucky, I thought I'd have a few bits of storage.
41:40But to have the whole room transformed and even painted is beyond my imagination.
41:47It's just so professional.
41:49And then get my friends in here and start teaching them again.
41:53Well, that was nice.
41:56And it's really a big bonus for me to reignite her passion for textile.
42:01But I don't think...
42:03By the way, she looked a bit shell-shocked.
42:05And I don't think she expected to get such a transformation done in just one day.
42:10The team has solved Eleanor's cleaning and fixing problems,
42:14giving her the best chance to live, create and teach in her flat.
42:17But after a few weeks, how is she getting on in the new spaces?
42:22Hi, Clean It Fix It team.
42:24And here is my utility hallway area.
42:28All my coats are hung up, which has been really useful.
42:32And as you can see, I'm using my hallway area.
42:35And my living room is looking super cosy now that I've got these amazing shelves.
42:40And here is the lobster looking lovely and cosy.
42:44The craft room, so still nice and tidy.
42:48And I've actually been painting today.
42:51So I've been using your Clean It Fix It door sign.
42:56Thank you so much for the amazing effort that you put in.
43:14Thank you so much for doing this.
43:15I'll see you next time.
43:20We are all here for everyone.
43:22Thanks.
43:23You're welcome.
43:25Be sure.
43:26We are the same.
43:27Thank you are the same place for the amazing natural light,
43:29we are the same, the things that you do.
43:30You are the same.
43:32I need to be the same.
43:35If you don't agree.
