00:07:04As the tears roll down your cheeks
00:07:10Oui !
00:10:12Je savais ça, le sugar man.
00:10:15Et il y a eu de la musique.
00:10:17Il y a eu de la musique.
00:10:19Il y a eu de la musique.
00:10:20Il y a eu de la musique.
00:10:22Il y a eu de la musique,
00:10:23si vous voyez un peu à la musique.
00:10:25On va dire?
00:10:26Le sugar man,
00:36:23Je ne sais pas quand ça a été fait, mais je n'ai absolument pas idée.
00:36:26C'est 1970, je pense.
00:36:28Oui.
00:36:56People would say, well, Bob Dylan, no, no, no, no.
00:36:59Bob Dylan was mild to this guy.
00:37:02Did it make any money?
00:37:04We judge this thing here in America.
00:37:06If you say, was it the top 100?
00:37:10Was it number, did it get on the charts, is number 12?
00:37:14Did there was a lot of radio play?
00:37:16The answer is no, man.
00:37:17Nobody didn't, Rodriguez?
00:37:22You know, that name didn't register.
00:37:26Although he looked like he was a white guy,
00:37:27but he hadn't still, Rodriguez.
00:37:29Everybody knew, Rodriguez, that's a Spanish name.
00:37:32A Latin name.
00:37:33Latin music was not happening then.
00:37:35How many records do you think he sold in America?
00:37:37In America? Six.
00:37:39Maybe my wife bought it, maybe my daughter bought it.
00:37:42Boy, she couldn't buy it.
00:37:42Maybe Neil Bogart, maybe Dennis and Mike.
00:37:45Look, man, it didn't sell here.
00:37:50And there was some excitement about him.
00:37:53A couple of agents heard him
00:37:55and wanted to bring him to California.
00:37:58And when he came to California, he was nervous
00:38:01and he turned his back to the audience
00:38:03and everybody said, well, what the hell is this?
00:38:05But the thing is that the guy sold hundreds of thousands records
00:38:08in another country.
00:38:10Well, I'm going to South Africa
00:38:11to try to chase somebody to sell on records?
00:38:12Shit, no, man.
00:38:13But did you know that he was big in South Africa?
00:38:16Rodriguez, young man, never happened insofar as I'm concerned.
00:38:22Period.
00:38:23But if I'm really going to try to track down the money,
00:38:26how should I do?
00:38:27Well, is that important, the money?
00:38:29Which is important?
00:38:31Rodriguez's story or you worrying about the money?
00:38:35If only, how many people in South Africa?
00:38:3740 million, 40,000, 40 million people?
00:38:39How many people?
00:38:4040 million people live in South Africa.
00:38:41Well, I mean, so they've been freed for how long?
00:38:44Three hours?
00:38:45So what the fuck's that supposed to mean?
00:38:47You told me at lunch they scratched records
00:38:49because they wouldn't let them live.
00:38:51So, underground movement, how big was it?
00:38:55He sold half a million records in South Africa.
00:38:57Well, so he sold half a million records.
00:38:59So what?
00:38:59I don't know who you sold him to.
00:39:01How many distributors did you have?
00:39:03I have no idea.
00:39:04There are only three record labels.
00:39:06I spoke to all the record labels in South Africa
00:39:09who has released his records.
00:39:12It was...
00:39:12Go back to him and tell him to send me an account.
00:39:15You think somebody's going to worry about a 1970 contract?
00:39:18If you do, you're out of your goddamn mind.
00:39:19Buddha Ricker's out of business.
00:39:22I'm out of business.
00:39:25So you think they give a shit about that?
00:39:28I know I wouldn't.
00:39:32I'd been looking for information about Rodriguez for a long time.
00:39:36I'd even set up a webpage called The Great Rodriguez Hunt
00:39:39in the hope that someone out there in cyberspace
00:39:41would post a message on the forum
00:39:43giving us any information about Rodriguez.
00:39:46But there was nothing.
00:39:47At that stage I met Craig
00:39:50who was the musicologist detective
00:39:53who had read my liner notes
00:39:54and who was also searching for Rodriguez
00:39:56and he flew down to Cape Town
00:39:58and we met in a coffee shop
00:39:59and we exchanged all the information we had
00:40:02but unfortunately we had very little.
00:40:04and at that stage I remember we felt
00:40:07it was probably best that we just stopped.
00:40:09So basically I was lost.
00:40:11I'd come to a dead end.
00:40:12I couldn't find him.
00:40:13I didn't know where to look anymore.
00:40:15I'd even visited the places that he sang about.
00:40:17I'd been to London.
00:40:19Nothing.
00:40:19I'd been to Amsterdam.
00:40:21He sings about Amsterdam.
00:40:22Nothing.
00:40:23And one day I'd basically given up.
00:40:25I thought, well, this is it.
00:40:26And one day just by accident
00:40:27I was listening to the album in the car
00:40:29and I heard the song
00:40:30Inner City Blues.
00:40:32Great song.
00:40:32And the line came up.
00:40:34I met a girl in Dearborn
00:40:35early six o'clock this morning.
00:40:37A cold fact.
00:40:39And I thought, hang on a minute.
00:40:40I'd never checked out Dearborn.
00:40:42I didn't even know if it was a city
00:40:43but then I thought,
00:40:44actually that sounds like a town or a city.
00:40:46And I thought, hang on.
00:40:47Let me check it out in an atlas.
00:40:49So I went through to my old atlas
00:40:52and pulled it out.
00:40:55I thought, let me see what I could find here.
00:40:58Let me see if I could find Dearborn.
00:41:01Um, dear...
00:41:03And then I found it.
00:41:04Dearborn, Wayne, Michigan.
00:41:06F7.
00:41:10See, F...
00:41:12F7.
00:41:14Dearborn, part of Detroit.
00:41:16That was a huge breakthrough in my mind.
00:41:18Detroit, home of Motown,
00:41:21Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder,
00:41:24and eventually Mike Theodore,
00:41:26the producer of the album.
00:41:32I was sitting in my condo
00:41:34just having a cup of coffee.
00:41:36I was looking out the window
00:41:37watching the ocean.
00:41:39Phone rings.
00:41:41It's a long-distance call from South Africa
00:41:44from a writer.
00:41:47His name's Craig Bartholomew.
00:41:48and he starts telling me
00:41:52this amazing story.
00:41:56So he said,
00:41:57do you know that Rodriguez
00:41:58has been selling in South Africa
00:42:00for 25 years?
00:42:01These albums are selling millions.
00:42:04I said, what?
00:42:06Then he's sitting there
00:42:07and he wants to start telling me
00:42:09some stories about,
00:42:10he said,
00:42:11how did Rodriguez die?
00:42:12He's telling me information that he had,
00:42:15that Rodriguez had blown his brains out on stage
00:42:19or set himself on fire and killed himself.
00:42:21I had a hundred questions I wanted to ask.
00:42:24I mean, I was just hoping I could get all my questions in,
00:42:27you know.
00:42:28Why did he write this lyric?
00:42:29Why did he write that lyric?
00:42:31Where did he record this album?
00:42:33Where did he record that album?
00:42:34And we got talking
00:42:36and I asked him a lot of questions
00:42:37and it was amazing.
00:42:39It was a rollercoaster ride
00:42:40of questions and answers
00:42:41and it was a euphoric moment
00:42:43of just having finally broken through
00:42:45and discovered something
00:42:46and finally I got to the one question
00:42:48I wanted to know the answer of
00:42:49was,
00:42:50how did Rodriguez die?
00:42:52Did he blow himself up on stage
00:42:54or what is this dramatic story?
00:42:57Let's open up the lid on this right away
00:43:00and find out what happened
00:43:01and Mike Theodore was,
00:43:05what do you mean dead?
00:43:06He's not dead.
00:43:09Sixto is alive.
00:43:10He's alive and kicking.
00:43:11The principal, kicking,
00:43:12the principal artist known as Sixto Rodriguez
00:43:15is alive and kicking
00:43:16and living in Detroit.
00:43:22I can't remember who called me
00:43:24and it just said they found him.
00:43:25I said,
00:43:26no,
00:43:27you're shitting me.
00:43:29This is,
00:43:30no.
00:43:31At first I thought it was a hoax.
00:43:34I thought somebody was faking it.
00:43:37You know,
00:43:38it's like,
00:43:38it's like going into Tutankhamen's tomb
00:43:41and finding the mummy.
00:43:42You know,
00:43:43it's like,
00:43:43wow,
00:43:43he lives.
00:43:44I remember dancing on the spot
00:43:46when I was staying on the phone
00:43:47and Craig and I were jumping up and down
00:43:49saying,
00:43:50we found him,
00:43:51we found him.
00:43:51And that was the most exciting thing.
00:43:53We'd actually done it.
00:43:56Just a song
00:43:58we shared our hymn
00:44:01Brings memories back
00:44:04when you were here
00:44:06Of your smile
00:44:10Your easy laughter
00:44:12Of your kiss
00:44:15Those moments after
00:44:18I think of you
00:44:21So that was it.
00:44:26I'd come to the point,
00:44:28this was the end of the story.
00:44:29I was searching for a dead man.
00:44:31One morning I discovered a living man.
00:44:34And to me that was the end of the story.
00:44:36I wrote my article,
00:44:37I called it Looking for Jesus.
00:44:39I faxed it to many individuals,
00:44:41many people involved,
00:44:42but somehow
00:44:43this article made its way
00:44:45across the Atlantic
00:44:46and into the hands of someone in America.
00:44:49And what I thought was the end of story
00:44:51was actually just the beginning of another story.
00:44:54And the best part
00:44:56was still to come.
00:44:59Because I don't know where it is.
00:45:01It might take a while.
00:45:02They do have the dates.
00:45:04Three years search for dead singer.
00:45:06Yes.
00:45:07August 97.
00:45:09I was in Kansas.
00:45:10I got a copy of it to me at work.
00:45:13I was on like a 24-hour shift.
00:45:15And then I went online
00:45:17and that's when I discovered the website.
00:45:21When I went online,
00:45:22there was this milk carton with a picture.
00:45:26And it said,
00:45:28Wanted and have you seen this man?
00:45:31I was like,
00:45:32Matter of fact,
00:45:32I have seen him before.
00:45:34And I was like...
00:45:35I replied,
00:45:38Rodriguez is my father.
00:45:39I'm serious.
00:45:41Do you really want to know about my father?
00:45:44Sometimes the fantasy is better left alive.
00:45:47I don't know why I said that,
00:45:48but anyway, I did.
00:45:49And then I gave him email,
00:45:51address, phone numbers,
00:45:52anything that they wanted to contact me.
00:45:56And he phoned me.
00:46:02Well, we'd found out that Rodriguez was alive.
00:46:04I'd spoken to Craig.
00:46:06And I came to work.
00:46:07And Alex McCrindle,
00:46:08who was the guy I worked on the website with,
00:46:10said,
00:46:11You're not going to believe
00:46:12what's on the website.
00:46:14And on the website was a forum
00:46:15where people could post messages.
00:46:18And there was a message that said,
00:46:19My name's Eva.
00:46:20I'm Rodriguez's daughter.
00:46:22She'd left a phone number
00:46:23and she said,
00:46:24I'd like to speak to someone
00:46:25in connection with this.
00:46:26So that night,
00:46:27I phoned her.
00:46:28I said,
00:46:29Hi, I'm Sugar.
00:46:30She said,
00:46:30I'm Eva.
00:46:31And we had the most amazing conversation.
00:46:34She explained to me
00:46:35who her father was,
00:46:36what he had done,
00:46:37where he had been.
00:46:38She asked me who I was
00:46:39and I explained
00:46:40why my name was Sugar
00:46:42and how I was involved
00:46:43with the website.
00:46:44And then at the end,
00:46:45I said to her,
00:46:46This has been the most amazing thing for me.
00:46:49And what would be really great
00:46:50is if I could at some point
00:46:51speak to your dad.
00:46:53I'd love it if I could just say hello to him.
00:46:54Because for me,
00:46:55this was sort of the end of the search
00:46:57and I just wanted to speak to this man.
00:46:59I mean, I went to bed
00:47:00and one o'clock in the morning that night,
00:47:03the phone rang
00:47:04and my wife answered it
00:47:07because it was her side of the bed.
00:47:09And I remember she picked up the phone
00:47:11and her face,
00:47:12she changed.
00:47:14She had this look of awe.
00:47:15She said,
00:47:16It's him.
00:47:18And I was in shock.
00:47:19I'd been sleeping
00:47:20and I ran into the other room,
00:47:22into my study
00:47:23and I picked up the phone
00:47:24and she put hers down
