What exactly is RealFeel and what does it have to do with your safety as extreme heat arrives? AccuWeather's Anna Azallion explains.
Transcript
00:00While we are in the middle of a heat wave and that means you're probably seeing a lot of maps like this.
00:07These are the maps showing our AccuWeather real feel temperatures.
00:10And it's kind of in the name itself, real feel, but it's what the temperature actually feels like outside,
00:16which I don't know about you, but I don't even really care about the air temperature.
00:18I want to know when I step outside, how hot is it going to feel?
00:22And this tells you that, but let's break down exactly what our AccuWeather real feel temperatures are
00:26and what they mean for kind of how you should go about your day, especially during a heat wave that's dangerous like this one.
00:33So there's a lot that goes into our AccuWeather real feel temperatures.
00:37You might have heard the term heat index before.
00:39That just factors in the temperature and the dew points or humidity.
00:43Ours has seven different factors that create this number to give you the best idea of what it actually feels like outside.
00:50So it's the temperature, but it's things like cloud cover, wind speed, that dew point and humidity is in here as well.
00:55But even things like the UV index and the sun angle, that's factored in, too.
01:00Again, just to give you the best idea of what it's actually going to feel like when you go outside, maybe on a run,
01:05which I will say I don't recommend during this heat wave unless it's in the very early hours of the day or, you know, very late, not during peak heat hours.
01:14That's for sure.
01:15Now, the first category I want to talk about, the 101 to 107, a lot of us are in this real feel range.
01:21This is when people that are in sensitive groups need to be limiting their time outside.
01:25So people who are older, younger children, people who are pregnant, people who are on medications that maybe make you more at risk for overheating and getting heat related illnesses.
01:36It's when we get even hotter, 108 to 115.
01:39This is the dangerous heat category when everybody needs to start thinking about heat related illness and limiting their time outside to avoid dehydration, heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
