00:00We move from State College, Pennsylvania to Florida because the state is facing another round of sweltering conditions as an intense heat dome with high humidity saturates the region, pushing the accurate real field temperatures into the triple digits.
00:12AccuWeather's Leslie Hudson joins us live from Crain's Roost in Altamont Springs, Florida with more. How does it feel this morning, Leslie?
00:23It is actually quite warm, Bernie, as you know. It's kind of a badge of courage when you live in Florida that you've got to take this weather because it's simply gorgeous here, you know, in the fall, in the winter.
00:38But this is where you really earn your stripes, the summer months. And, you know, it has been unseasonably warm, even for us with very high humidity.
00:47And as you mentioned, those temperatures in the 90s, unfortunately, we're expected to stay this way through this week.
00:53As you mentioned, the meteorologists at AccuWeather have said that real field temperature here in the central Florida area should still stay well above the triple digits, not only through this week, but into next week.
01:05The real field index later today temperature should be around 102 where I'm standing right now.
01:10So the few folks that you see out, you see that one jogger over my shoulder, they're out early here now while that real field index is in the upper 90s.
01:19But that sweltering heat, you know, is kind of like a moniker of the dog days of summer, which typically don't start until July.
01:26But the fact that we've been dealing with this very, very oppressive heat will linger for the next several days.
01:32Millions of Americans are sweating it out across the region, not only in the U.S., but here in Florida, as I mentioned.
01:38And along the coast in Florida, they are getting into the lower 90s.
01:41They do have that breeze, but the humidity is high there, too.
01:44So there is still that real feel in temperature that's getting close to those triple digits.
01:49Now, we were out and about yesterday trying to talk to some tourists and some Floridians.
01:53We ran into Rosa Mendez, who came to Cranes Roost on Monday afternoon to try and give her kids some outdoor time.
01:59It is summer here. School has been out in central Florida for more than a month.
02:04So or just about a month, I should say.
02:06So moms are trying to do what they can.
02:08But in this sweltering heat, it is hard to stay cool, and they can't stay out very long.
02:15We instantly regretted leaving the car without sunscreen because it was really hot, and it's been getting hotter every year.
02:23We normally keep a little umbrella or bring a lot of water, but luckily there's a water fountain right there.
02:29So we left our water in the car, too.
02:31He's dressed like a boy. I dressed him like a boy.
02:34So we all know those do's and don'ts of trying to stay cool during these really hot days.
02:40And the peak time anywhere, but especially here in Notre Dame in Florida, is from that 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
02:47when that sun is the most blazing.
02:49If you are going to be out and about, you know this, but make sure you bring that water bottle.
02:53Make sure it's with you at all times.
02:55Make sure you're drinking, even if you're not thirsty.
02:57That's a real big, key, important point that the health department here is trying to enforce people to remember that.
03:03You don't have to be thirsty.
03:04If you're thirsty, then you're already dehydrated.
03:06So try and keep the water flowing.
03:09Make sure you take frequent breaks.
03:10I did see a lot of people getting into the shade yesterday afternoon when they were trying to take a break.
03:16Wear that light-colored clothing.
03:17And unfortunately, that forecast does not keep rain around.
03:22Very, very minimal rain chances here in central Florida over the next couple of days.
03:26We typically get our summer storms, but they haven't really fired up yet.
03:29So it is going to be an all-out look for that shade as we head into the afternoon.
03:34Reporting from central Florida in Cranesbury and Altamont Springs, I'm Leslie Hudson.
03:38Back to you.
03:38Leslie, we appreciate it.
03:40I mean, the heat's, I think, better when you've got palm trees, at least in the distance,
03:43not buildings like we're going to be seeing here shortly.
03:46And it would always be nice to be near a beach as well.
03:48Right.
03:48I mean, Leslie, we feel for you.
03:50Yeah, I mean, I don't know how you do what you do.
03:52Yeah, I know.
03:55I know.
03:56Bernie always gives, you guys give me such a hard time.
03:58It's so hot here.
03:59I'm just telling you.
04:00It's hot.
04:00I'm already sweating.
04:01But yes, beautiful palm trees.
04:03Yes, the palm trees.
04:04It's like, that's where it's supposed to be hot.
