After a man was shot in east London, how safe does the capital feel?
Transcript
00:00Another shooting took place in London over the weekend, with emergency services rushing to Crossway in East London in Dalston shortly before 11pm on Saturday, June 21st.
00:16Police officers, including armed police, attended the scene alongside paramedics from the London Ambulance Service.
00:24Now, a victim aged 37 years old was found with injuries caused by gunshots and was taken to hospital nearby at the time of recording on the afternoon of Monday, the 23rd of June.
00:41No arrests have been made. The police have asked anyone with information about the incidents that took place in Dalston to come forward and contact them to help with an investigation.
00:53In 2024, it had been confirmed that gun crime had risen in the UK and with another shooting over the weekend. How safe are the people of London feeling?
01:06Well, I personally feel very safe, but I suspect I'm not out at night. I'm not a sort of high risk group, so I have no worries. But I appreciate, of course, that for other people, it's a big issue.
01:18Relatively safe. Relatively safe, but I'm aware that violence is getting worse. Whether it be gun crime, knife crime, general crime, seems to be getting worse. So I'm slightly concerned on the rise of that.
01:31Oh yeah, very safe. Very safe. I'm from America, so I think almost anywhere real safer in a way.
01:39I think there needs to be more police presence on the streets. Walking the streets, community police officers, more awareness of them. Youth centres, it's all about the youth at times.
01:54But yeah, more youth centres can be done, more for the young. But the young have to engage themselves. When we talk about young, we talk about teenagers. They're quite active going out, hanging around on the streets.
02:07They're quite active. They're quite active, finding things to do for themselves. You know, they're quite, youth today are intelligent kids, youngsters.
02:16So they have to take responsibility for themselves as well. It's not just a government. The youngsters have to take and be aware of their own surroundings, where they are impacting on their own communities.
02:30Well, I'm confused by it, because I'm not really quite sure how many knives are deposited in these bins. And I'm assuming it's not kitchen knives.
02:39So it would interest me to know what the data is on how many knives are returned. But it's a police action, and I suppose it's to just communicate it's a safe way and make a fresh start.
02:53But as I say, I don't know anything about the numbers of knives returned.
