00:00:30The Bridesmaid by Ruth Randall
00:00:39Dramatized by Betty Davis
00:00:42With Jamie Glover as Philip and Rachel Lewis as Santa
00:00:47Violent death fascinates people
00:00:59Most people, not me
00:01:01I've always had, well, I suppose you'd call it a phobia
00:01:05A phobia for all forms of killing
00:01:08Killing in war, killing in senseless accidents, killing in murder
00:01:12I didn't want to make a fuss about it
00:01:15So I watched the news with the rest of the family
00:01:18Northern Ireland, Yugoslavia, Angola and a train crash in France
00:01:22And Rebecca Neve
00:01:24The others knew what I felt
00:01:26But that didn't stop them talking about Rebecca Neve
00:01:29There is still no response to the police appeal for information
00:01:32About the missing London girl, Rebecca Neve
00:01:34Rebecca, 23, disappeared three days ago
00:01:37But they think it's murder
00:01:38When she was last seen, she was wearing a green velvet tracksuit and white trainless
00:01:42Her mother, Mrs Neve, made this appeal at a press conference this afternoon
00:01:47Rebecca met someone that night
00:01:49I'm sure she did
00:01:51She'd advertised for jobs as a babysitter
00:01:54And somebody rang up in answer
00:01:55She had an appointment the evening she disappeared
00:01:58Please, if anyone knows anything
00:02:02Oh, the poor woman, what she must be going through
00:02:04I know how I'd feel if it were any of you
00:02:06Well, it's hardly likely to be me, Mum
00:02:08Can I turn it off now?
00:02:09Oh, if you like
00:02:09You can't stand anything like that, can you, Phil?
00:02:12Oh, sorry
00:02:13I was interested because I was at school with her
00:02:15Why can't they put nice things on the news?
00:02:17There must be some nice things
00:02:19There might be an idea
00:02:20They could have a list of all the people who'd been in car crashes and didn't get killed
00:02:24What are we expected tomorrow?
00:02:26That's right, change the subject
00:02:28That's a say like you
00:02:29Gerard
00:02:30I'd said to be there about six
00:02:31I wanted to ask you
00:02:33Could you all come out into the garden for a minute?
00:02:35What for?
00:02:36I want your advice
00:02:37What about?
00:02:38Flora
00:02:38Flora
00:02:39She was a statue
00:02:42A Roman statue, three feet high
00:02:44She'd stood in our garden as long as I could remember
00:02:47First in the big garden at Barnett
00:02:49Right then, after Dad died
00:02:50In our shabby little Cricklewood garden
00:02:53Mum laid her hand on Flora's head
00:02:56And gave it a little stroke
00:02:58The way she might have caressed a child
00:03:00What would you say
00:03:02If I told you I'd like to give her to Gerard?
00:03:05What?
00:03:06You can't give people statues
00:03:08Why not if they like them?
00:03:09That time he came for dinner
00:03:11When you were all out
00:03:12He said he liked her
00:03:13He said she reminded him of me
00:03:15You give people chocolates
00:03:17Or a bottle of wine
00:03:18He brought me a bottle of wine
00:03:20I don't think she really looks like me
00:03:23She's always reminded me of a bridesmaid
00:03:26I expect it's the flowers she's holding
00:03:28Her Mayblossom
00:03:29She's the goddess of spring
00:03:31And Mayblossom
00:03:31I've felt for ages she was wasted here
00:03:34She looks silly
00:03:36Silly?
00:03:37I mean, she makes the rest of it look silly
00:03:39Like putting champagne in a plastic cup
00:03:41That's it, exactly
00:03:42You can give her wherever you want to
00:03:44She's yours
00:03:45Not ours
00:03:46Dad gave her to you
00:03:47I think of everything as ours
00:03:49Gerard says he's got a lovely garden
00:03:53I'd feel better about Flora
00:03:55If she were in our proper setting
00:03:57And we'll take her with us tomorrow
00:03:58It didn't seem very important at the time
00:04:00It wasn't one of those life or death decisions
00:04:03Like whether or not to marry
00:04:04Or have a child
00:04:05Or have that vital surgery
00:04:07But in its way
00:04:09It mattered as much as any of these
00:04:10Hello, Hardy
00:04:13Good dog, then
00:04:14Oh, I'll have to lock him in the kitchen tomorrow
00:04:17Oh, can't we take him with us?
00:04:19Not really
00:04:19Gerard doesn't like dogs
00:04:21Oh, he's not cruel to them or anything
00:04:23Just doesn't care for them much
00:04:25Could tell he didn't like Hardy that evening he was here
00:04:29Seeing Flora reminded me
00:04:31Rebecca Neve once made a girl's head
00:04:34What on earth do you mean?
00:04:36In clay
00:04:36In the pottery class
00:04:37The teacher made her break it up
00:04:39Because we were only supposed to be making pots
00:04:41And just imagine
00:04:42She may be lying dead somewhere
00:04:45I'd rather not imagine to thank you
00:04:47I'm not fascinated by these things the way you are
00:04:49It's not that I'm fascinated
00:04:50We're all interested in murder and violence and crime
00:04:54They say it's because we've got elements of it in ourselves
00:04:56We're all capable of murder
00:04:59We all sometimes want to attack people
00:05:01To hurt them
00:05:02I don't
00:05:03He really doesn't fear
00:05:04You know he doesn't
00:05:05He doesn't like talking about it either
00:05:07So shut up
00:05:08So we set off the following evening
00:05:10Leaving Hardy barking wistfully in the kitchen
00:05:12He was called after Hardy Amos
00:05:15Not Thomas Hardy
00:05:15I carried Flora in a plastic bag
00:05:18She was very heavy
00:05:19I'm quite nervous
00:05:22I do hope you like him
00:05:23Stop saying that mum
00:05:24Thing is
00:05:25Will he like us?
00:05:26Of course he will
00:05:27Don't be silly dear
00:05:28Well it's a nice area isn't it?
00:05:32Lovely house
00:05:33Very nice
00:05:33Such a pity he's got to sell it
00:05:35Why has he got to sell it?
00:05:37He has to share the proceeds with his ex-wife
00:05:39I thought his wife was dead
00:05:40Oh how yucky
00:05:42Christine!
00:05:43Oh
00:05:44Gerard
00:05:45This is my family
00:05:47Fiona my eldest
00:05:49The one I told you was getting married
00:05:50Hello
00:05:50And Philip
00:05:51He's with a firm of interior designers
00:05:53Hello sir
00:05:53And this is Cheryl
00:05:54She's just left school
00:05:56Hello
00:05:56Hello
00:05:57And
00:05:58Who's this?
00:06:01Don't you remember?
00:06:03She's Flora
00:06:04Who was in my garden
00:06:05You said you liked her
00:06:06So I brought her for you
00:06:07She's yours now
00:06:11Very kind
00:06:12Well you'd better come in
00:06:15We'll install Flora
00:06:16Shall we?
00:06:17The garden's at the back
00:06:19Put her down there
00:06:21Okay
00:06:22Philip isn't it?
00:06:24She must be heavy
00:06:25Oh
00:06:28She looks just right here
00:06:30I knew she would
00:06:32Seems a shame she can't stay forever
00:06:34You'll just have to take her with you when you move
00:06:37Yes
00:06:38Expect you'll have another nice garden
00:06:40Wherever it is
00:06:41I hope so
00:06:42Well
00:06:44Come inside and have a drink
00:06:46After that I suggest you let me take you all out for a meal somewhere
00:06:50Oh that would be lovely
00:06:51It wasn't particularly
00:06:53We all piled into his Jaguar and he took us to the local steakhouse
00:06:57And Fee went on about Rebecca Neve
00:07:00Again
00:07:01They said the police had got a man helping them with their inquiries
00:07:05I bet it's her boyfriend
00:07:06If a person gets murdered the police always think it's her husband or her boyfriend
00:07:11Do you think that's awful?
00:07:13Why do we have to think about it?
00:07:15Who cares about these revolting things?
00:07:17She's probably dead already
00:07:19And they've found the body and they're keeping it dark
00:07:21To trap someone
00:07:23If that's true
00:07:24It'll come out of the inquest
00:07:25In this country the police don't keep things dark
00:07:28Who are you trying to kill
00:07:30Cheryl
00:07:30Tell me about Flora, Christine
00:07:33How did you come together?
00:07:35Oh well
00:07:35We were on our honeymoon in Florence
00:07:37And I saw Flora in an antique shop window
00:07:39And I said wasn't she lovely?
00:07:42You tell him what happened Cheryl
00:07:43The way Dad told you
00:07:45Mum said
00:07:46She'd be terribly expensive
00:07:48But Dad was never one to go on about things costing a lot
00:07:52He said her face was like Mum's
00:07:54But I don't see it
00:07:55Well do you?
00:07:57Perhaps it be
00:07:57Anyway
00:07:58That's why Dad liked her
00:07:59He said
00:08:00Tell you what
00:08:02We'll have a bet on it
00:08:03I think she's Venus
00:08:04If she isn't
00:08:05I'll buy her for you
00:08:06Dad was a bit of a gambler
00:08:08He paid for the honeymoon out of his Derby winnings
00:08:10Well
00:08:11The man said she wasn't Venus
00:08:13She was the Farnese Flora
00:08:15So Dad had to buy her after that
00:08:17She cost a lot
00:08:18Hundreds of thousands of
00:08:20Or whatever their money's called
00:08:22And they had to have her sent home
00:08:25Because they couldn't carry her in the aircraft
00:08:27You make me feel I shouldn't have accepted her
00:08:30She's far too valuable a gift
00:08:32Gerard I want you to have her
00:08:34Please
00:08:34It means a lot to me
00:08:36Makes me happy to think of her there
00:08:39And that settled the matter
00:08:41And gave Gerard his cue to call for the waiter
00:08:42I thought he'd only drive us to Buckhurst Hill Station
00:08:46But he took us all the way home
00:08:48I thought we'd better leave them to have a word or two on their own
00:08:52I like the Jack
00:08:54What did you think of him?
00:08:56Well, he's all right, I suppose
00:08:57Oh, no lingering farewells
00:09:01Well?
00:09:03Well, what?
00:09:04Did you like him?
00:09:05Philip?
00:09:06He seemed very nice
00:09:07Yes
00:09:08He's okay
00:09:09Sure
00:09:09Yeah, I liked him
00:09:10He's not older than Dad, though
00:09:13I mean, he looks older
00:09:14He's 51
00:09:15I put my foot in it, didn't I?
00:09:18What do you mean?
00:09:19I realised it when we went in
00:09:20I'd said to him
00:09:21I wanted him to meet all of you
00:09:23And he sort of smiled and said he'd like to
00:09:25And the next thing he said was to come on Saturday
00:09:27I thought he meant all of us
00:09:29But he must have meant just me
00:09:30Why must he?
00:09:31There was a little table laid for two
00:09:33I saw it when we went through
00:09:35Oh, well
00:09:37It's a nice evening, anyway
00:09:39When are you seeing him again?
00:09:41Not for a while
00:09:42He's going to America on business next week
00:09:44How long for?
00:09:46About four weeks, I think
00:09:47How long did you say he'd be away?
00:09:53Four weeks
00:09:54I thought so
00:09:55It's nearly four months now
00:09:57He wouldn't be away on a business trip that long
00:09:59He did send her a card from the States
00:10:01Oh, big deal
00:10:02She's tried to phone him
00:10:04But the number's unobtainable
00:10:05She told me so herself
00:10:06She thought perhaps his phone was out of order
00:10:08Well, he was going to move
00:10:10Don't you remember?
00:10:12He's moved without telling her
00:10:13And I thought we might have a double wedding in May
00:10:16Darren and me and Mum and Gerard
00:10:18Phil
00:10:20Are you still going out with Jenny?
00:10:23Well, no
00:10:24Oh, I was going to ask her to be one of my bridesmaids
00:10:28But I shan't if you've split up
00:10:30I suppose we have
00:10:31We didn't quarrel or anything
00:10:32Just drifted
00:10:34I don't want to pick it up again
00:10:36Then I'll have to ask Senta
00:10:38Who's Senta?
00:10:39Darren's cousin
00:10:40There'll be Senta and Janice
00:10:42And Cheryl and Stephanie
00:10:44You'll like her
00:10:45Phil
00:10:48Hmm?
00:10:51Don't you think he ought to give Flora back?
00:10:54What?
00:10:55She's valuable
00:10:56She isn't a plastic garden gnome
00:10:59If he doesn't want Mum
00:11:01He ought to send Flora back
00:11:02Look at that space where she used to stand
00:11:05It's spoiled the garden
00:11:07Mum really thought he'd marry her, you know
00:11:13I suppose she hoped he would
00:11:14Oh, she was sure of it
00:11:16Well, you know Mum
00:11:18She's like a child sometimes
00:11:20It was a sort of confidence
00:11:24But she didn't say I wasn't to tell you
00:11:26Tell me what?
00:11:28Don't let on to, I told you
00:11:30That time he came here when we were all out
00:11:33They, well
00:11:35Had sex, made love
00:11:37Whatever you call it
00:11:38In a bedroom
00:11:39Suppose one of us had come in
00:11:42It would have been very embarrassing
00:11:43Why did she tell you?
00:11:48I think it was because I told her about Senta's mother
00:11:51She's always having affairs
00:11:53And she's got a new lover
00:11:54Not yet thirty
00:11:55I told Mum
00:11:56And that's when she came out with it
00:11:57I had an affair with Gerard
00:12:00Well, just the once
00:12:01You know how she gets expressions just that little bit wrong
00:12:05That's why she was so sure he'd marry her
00:12:09I know
00:12:10Any other woman would think just the reverse
00:12:13Especially someone that age
00:12:14But you know Mum
00:12:16Oh, I wish you hadn't told me
00:12:19It disturbed me very much
00:12:21I don't know why
00:12:22Somehow I seem to have become my mother's father
00:12:25And she was the child who'd been seduced and deserted
00:12:28I tried to push it out of my mind
00:12:30But I couldn't
00:12:31And then something happened that made things worse
00:12:34I've got a job for you tomorrow, Philip
00:12:38A client wants a bedroom converted to a bathroom
00:12:40Okay, Roy, where is it?
00:12:41Er, Chigwell
00:12:42A Mrs. Ripple
00:12:43Bit of a battle axe by all accounts
00:12:45But you can handle that, I'm sure, eh?
00:12:48Turn on the charm
00:12:49Chigwell
00:12:50Is that anywhere near Buckhurst Hill?
00:12:52Yes, it is
00:12:53Why?
00:12:53I...
00:12:54I used to know someone who lived out there
00:12:56Champagne bath and basin
00:12:59Vanity unit with black marble top
00:13:02And black and gold tiles
00:13:03It should look very nice, Mrs. Ripple
00:13:05I hope so, I'm sure
00:13:06You charge enough for it
00:13:08Be careful with those field glasses when you're measuring the window
00:13:11They cost a bomb
00:13:12I'll be very careful
00:13:13I'll leave you to measure up
00:13:14The window was to be double glazed
00:13:21I took the measurements meticulously and then opened it and looked outside
00:13:25I was looking at the back gardens of the houses opposite
00:13:30It was all very pretty
00:13:32The trees were in blossom and the tulips in bloom
00:13:35And in one garden a small statue
00:13:38It looked familiar, but I couldn't believe it
00:13:42It was too far away to tell for certain
00:13:45Until I remembered the field glasses
00:13:47I focused them carefully
00:13:50Oh no, it can't be
00:13:52But there was no mistake
00:13:55I was looking at Flora
00:13:57She was covered with pink petals from the May tree above her
00:14:01But I could see the green stain at the side of her neck
00:14:03And the chip out of her left ear
00:14:05I'd made that myself with my catapult when I was ten
00:14:08Dad had docked my pocket money for three weeks
00:14:10Suddenly it came to me
00:14:14That I was looking at Gerard Arnhem's new home
00:14:17Finished?
00:14:21Yes
00:14:22I'll be in touch when the layout's completed
00:14:24And you'll see me again when the work begins
00:14:25When's that going to be?
00:14:26Sometime next year?
00:14:27Oh, a few weeks at the most
00:14:29I'll believe it when I see it
00:14:31I didn't go straight home
00:14:33I drove round the block to see the front of Gerard's house
00:14:36A woman was looking out of a downstairs window
00:14:40She was a big, dark, handsome woman
00:14:42Younger than Mum
00:14:43As I watched
00:14:45She brushed her hair back from her forehead
00:14:47And I saw the wedding ring on her left hand
00:14:49Gerard Arnhem had married
00:14:52The bastard!
00:14:54The rotten bastard!
00:14:56A wave of anger swept through me
00:14:59Unlike anything I'd ever felt before
00:15:01I hated Gerard Arnhem
00:15:02My mother should have been living in that house
00:15:04Looking after that garden
00:15:06I don't know how long I sat there
00:15:11I couldn't have driven away
00:15:13I was distraught
00:15:14I was trembling with rage
00:15:16And then I heard a car start up
00:15:20It came out of Arnhem's driveway and passed me
00:15:24His wife was driving
00:15:25It was a small runabout
00:15:27Not the Jag
00:15:28Perhaps that was a company car
00:15:30Arnhem would have it at his office
00:15:31His office!
00:15:34Of course!
00:15:35I realised suddenly that the house would be empty
00:15:38Hello, Flora
00:15:41Remember me?
00:15:43It was strange
00:15:44I'd known her all my life
00:15:47But now I felt I was looking at her for the first time
00:15:49I'd never realised how beautiful she was
00:15:53She wasn't really like my mother
00:15:56Mum was still a pretty woman in her own way
00:15:59But not like that
00:16:00She hadn't got the heavy look of most old statues
00:16:03She was delicately beautiful
00:16:06Like a lovely living girl
00:16:07But her eyes
00:16:10Wide apart
00:16:12Gazing away into infinity
00:16:14It didn't belong to any living girl
00:16:17They were the eyes of a pagan goddess
00:16:20I looked at her a long time
00:16:23Too long
00:16:24And suddenly
00:16:26Madly
00:16:27I thought that if ever I saw a real woman with that face
00:16:30I'd fall in love with her at once
00:16:31Flora
00:16:34I've come to take you home
00:16:36Excuse me
00:16:37What do you think you're doing?
00:16:38Oh my god
00:16:39It's alright
00:16:48No one followed me
00:16:49Anyway
00:16:50She doesn't belong there
00:16:51She belongs to us
00:16:52Don't you?
00:16:55What am I to do with you though?
00:16:58I can't put you back in our garden
00:16:59How could I explain that to Mum?
00:17:02Well you'll just have to live up in my room
00:17:03Until I can think of a story
00:17:06The four girls grouped themselves round Fee
00:17:18They were wearing fairly hideous dresses
00:17:21Puff ball net skirts with orange spots
00:17:24And they looked grotesque
00:17:25All except one
00:17:27That's right ladies
00:17:28Now a nice smile
00:17:30Lovely
00:17:31Centre
00:17:32It must be centre
00:17:35She didn't look like Darren's cousin
00:17:37She didn't look like anybody's cousin
00:17:40She looked
00:17:42She looked extraordinary
00:17:45Thank you
00:17:46Now hold it girls
00:17:47This is positive
00:17:48The last one
00:17:48Her skin was very white
00:17:51As white as the inside of a seashell
00:17:54And her lips were almost as pale
00:17:56Her hair
00:17:57Long, straight and smooth
00:17:59Was silver
00:18:00And her face
00:18:02Her face
00:18:05Was Flora's face
00:18:07Oh I must have one shot with him
00:18:10He's so sweet
00:18:11It'd be quite alright to hold him
00:18:12He's just been shampooed
00:18:14Here boy
00:18:14Here hardy
00:18:15There
00:18:16What a peculiar dog
00:18:19He has orange spots
00:18:21He matches your dresses
00:18:22Did you do it on purpose?
00:18:24No
00:18:24Cheryl splashed him when she was colouring her hair
00:18:27It wouldn't come out when my mother washed him
00:18:28I thought he must be some rare breed
00:18:30Are you Philip?
00:18:32Fee's brother
00:18:32That's right
00:18:33Senta Pelham
00:18:35I've never met anyone called Senta before
00:18:37It's the name of the girl in the Flying Dutchman
00:18:40Philip
00:18:40Excuse me
00:18:41Yes mother
00:18:41The car's here to take me and your auntie to the church
00:18:44And the one for the bridesmaids
00:18:45That's alright
00:18:45Everyone's ready
00:18:46No you won't forget to shut Hardy up in the kitchen before you leave
00:18:48Otherwise he'll do a wee wee on the white rug
00:18:50You know he always does that when he's excited
00:18:52I won't forget
00:18:53Oh come along everyone
00:18:54Are you ready?
00:18:55Come on
00:18:56Come on
00:18:56Oh Phil
00:18:59Oh Lord of my mascara smudge
00:19:01I look awful don't I?
00:19:03No you don't
00:19:04You look fine
00:19:05Well
00:19:05If it doesn't work out
00:19:06We can always get divorced
00:19:08Most people do
00:19:09Come on
00:19:10Calm down
00:19:10You've known him for years
00:19:11He's the one for you
00:19:13The original childhood sweethearts
00:19:15Oh
00:19:15Do you know what I've been thinking?
00:19:17If only bloody Gerard Arnhem had done right by mum
00:19:20We could be having a double wedding
00:19:22It was the first wedding I've been to since I was a child
00:19:29I wasn't prepared for the feeling of anti-climax
00:19:32Once the bride and groom had gone
00:19:33And people started drifting away from the reception
00:19:35I hadn't exchanged another word with Senta
00:19:39But every time I looked up
00:19:41I found her eyes on me
00:19:42Strange eyes
00:19:44Almost colourless
00:19:46Like clear water
00:19:48With a single swirling drop of dark green dye
00:19:51Will it be all right, dear?
00:19:57You could come to Aunty Rose with me, you know, if you'd like to
00:20:00No thanks, mum
00:20:01I didn't think you'd want to
00:20:03You're driving the bridesmaids back to the house, aren't you?
00:20:06They've left their change of clothes in Fee's room
00:20:09Yes, of course
00:20:09I think they're ready to leave now, aren't they, Cheryl?
00:20:12Yeah, we're all ready
00:20:13Except Senta
00:20:14Isn't she coming?
00:20:16Not yet
00:20:16She says she'll hitch a lift later
00:20:18Hitch?
00:20:19Get a lift
00:20:19I suppose she means
00:20:20She'll need one
00:20:22It's going to rain
00:20:23I felt unreasonably disappointed
00:20:26Senta's gaze met mine as I looked across the room
00:20:30She opened her eyes wider
00:20:33Her lips parted
00:20:35And she ran her tongue slowly and deliberately over her upper lip
00:20:39And then her lower
00:20:40I decided she was mocking me
00:20:43I drove the other bridesmaids back to the house and left them to it
00:20:48I got out of my wedding gear
00:20:50Put on jeans and a sweater
00:20:51And took Hardy for a walk in spite of the rain
00:20:53When I got back
00:20:56Everyone had gone
00:20:57The house was empty
00:20:59Empty and gloomy
00:21:01A sudden impulse made me open the cupboard in my room and take out Flora
00:21:07Her white marble skin glistened in the grey, rainy light
00:21:11Just having her there seemed to improve the look of the room
00:21:15Flora, you can come out
00:21:19They've all gone now
00:21:20I wonder if they've missed you and Chigwell
00:21:23You are beautiful
00:21:26But you're not unique, you know
00:21:28I've seen your double today
00:21:30Coming!
00:21:40Senta!
00:21:40Let me in quickly, please
00:21:43Yes, of course
00:21:43Sorry
00:21:44Did you get a lift?
00:21:48No, I had to walk
00:21:49Dressed like that?
00:21:52Yes
00:21:52Is there a towel somewhere?
00:21:55Oh, in the bathroom
00:21:55In here?
00:21:57Yeah
00:21:57My hair
00:21:59I feel as if I've been swimming underwater
00:22:02There's a hair dryer somewhere
00:22:03Oh, never mind
00:22:04I'll towel it dry
00:22:06Is this your room?
00:22:07Yeah, but your clothes are in Fee's room
00:22:09Later
00:22:09I'm so cold and wet
00:22:11I must get these clothes off
00:22:13I always hated that dress
00:22:18Senta
00:22:18Before I realised what she was doing
00:22:20She kicked off her shoes
00:22:21And peeled off her mud splash tights
00:22:23She stood there naked
00:22:25Those strange eyes fixed on me
00:22:28There could be no doubt
00:22:29What she intended
00:22:30Do you mind seeing me like this, Philip?
00:22:33Mind?
00:22:34No
00:22:35No, no, you're very beautiful
00:22:37I'm cold
00:22:38Come here
00:22:40You feel warm
00:22:42No
00:22:42I'm shivering
00:22:44Make me warm, Philip
00:22:46Into bed
00:22:50I'm cold
00:22:52I'm cold
00:22:53Senta
00:22:54Oh, God
00:22:56She made love to me
00:22:59It was the most overwhelming experience of my life
00:23:03Afterwards
00:23:06She lay back on the pillow and smiled at me
00:23:09Philip
00:23:10Say my name
00:23:13Senta
00:23:14It's a beautiful name
00:23:17Listen, Philip
00:23:19When I saw you this morning
00:23:21I knew at once
00:23:22That you were the one
00:23:23The only one for me
00:23:24Always
00:23:25I've been looking for you
00:23:28A long time
00:23:29But
00:23:30You can't have been all that long
00:23:33How old are you?
00:23:35Twenty?
00:23:35Twenty-four
00:23:36See, I tell you everything
00:23:38Since I was sixteen
00:23:40I've always known
00:23:41There was just one man
00:23:42In the world for me
00:23:43And now I've found him
00:23:45I believe souls come in pairs
00:23:48But when we're born
00:23:50They split in two
00:23:51And we spend all our lives
00:23:52Trying to find our other half
00:23:54But sometimes people make mistakes
00:23:56And get the wrong one
00:23:57This isn't a mistake, is it?
00:24:00It wasn't for me
00:24:01This is forever
00:24:02Shall I stay the night here with you?
00:24:06I'd love you to
00:24:07But I really don't think it's on
00:24:08My mother
00:24:09Oh, it doesn't matter
00:24:09We can go to my place
00:24:11You're the place of your own?
00:24:13Of course
00:24:13It's yours as well now
00:24:16Oh, Santa
00:24:17Why
00:24:18What's that?
00:24:22In the corner?
00:24:24That's Flora
00:24:24She looks like me
00:24:29Yes
00:24:30She looks like you
00:24:33I'll tell you about her sometime
00:24:35You must
00:24:36I want to know all about you
00:24:38We must have no secrets from each other
00:24:41Get dressed and come with me now
00:24:43I obeyed her
00:24:45Mesmerized
00:24:46I had found the real woman with Flora's face
00:24:50She looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she wants she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like she looks like

00:26:42you to have opinions about me that's going to be the most important thing in the world our world
00:26:47what we think about each other a spiritual interchange but the rest of the night wasn't
00:26:53particularly spiritual and afterwards she took over my life
00:26:59for the first time i was thankful that my mother was so vague she never asked me where i'd been
00:27:05what i was doing actually she was out a lot herself she had a new friend some woman called
00:27:11audrey she'd met at fee's wedding so every night i drove over to center's grubby basement flat and we
00:27:16made love did i love her i asked myself that but i didn't know the answer i thought of her all the
00:27:25time at work at home in my own bed at night sometimes inside my head i talked to her and
00:27:34told her all my thoughts and fears for some reason i couldn't tell them to the real woman
00:27:39once i took her to an indian restaurant she wore a strange dress that belonged to her grandmother
00:27:46gray with silver threads woven into it
00:27:49you haven't told anyone about us have you philip no not yet don't i want it to be our secret
00:27:58just for a little while all right center yes tell me everything about yourself we know so little

00:29:17my kidnapping her from the garden in chigwell she listened but i felt she wasn't paying much
00:29:23attention so that's about the most exciting thing that's happened to me i've happened to you
00:29:29oh it's getting dark i'll light the lamp center why do you dye your hair does it look dyed then i
00:29:38don't mean the hair on your head why do you do it i don't of course you do you're a silver blonde

00:29:52what's the matter i bleached the hair of my head you fool sorry sorry never do that again
00:30:04she had alarmed me but her outburst was soon over i didn't believe her but after all it was a very
00:30:13small lie gradually i found out more about her or did i well she told me a great deal but i was never
00:30:21sure how much of it was true i went for an audition yesterday what for quite a good part in a feature
00:30:27film i didn't get it though miranda richardson got it miranda richardson yes but the director liked me
00:30:35he said i was remarkable oh that's encouraging isn't it philip it's worth my going for all those
00:30:41workouts one day it'll pay off workouts oh of course you wouldn't know what that means
00:30:47was to keep myself fit i go to a gym in paris street lots of celebrities go there stage and
00:30:53ballet people last week i had tea with wayne sleep i felt a pang of something that i recognized as fear
00:31:01it frightened me that she might tell me lies but why should it after all girls did lie
00:31:09i remembered my last girlfriend jenny telling me her tan was natural when i knew she'd had daily
00:31:14sessions in a sunbed fee and darren were back from their honeymoon and i realized with a shock that
00:31:20i'd only known center for two weeks they came around to show mum the wedding photographs
00:31:25and i wondered again how anyone as commonplace as darren could have a cousin like center
00:31:30oh that one's good you look lovely fee and cheryl's come out nicely too
00:31:36phil come and have a look at the wedding photographs all right bride and groom oh yes

00:32:29why oh i see fancier do you phil i don't know her i've only met her once she's your first cousin
00:32:37first second i'm not into all that all i know is my mum is her auntie and her dad is my uncle
00:32:43that makes us cousins in my book come on phil you do fancy her well i could get you in there if you
00:32:50like mind you she's a funny piece you should see the place she lives in it's a real dump
00:32:55if they wouldn't set foot there when they were fixing up the dresses and she could have a nice
00:33:00home with uncle tom in finchley she must want her head tested i had this idea she'd been to rada i
00:33:04don't know why no way rada's in bloomsbury her place was definitely in ealing
00:33:09mind you i'm sure she'd like to kid people she went to rada so now i knew what i'd already
00:33:15suspected my center was a fantasist i didn't mind i told myself i'd just have to learn to
00:33:22recognize the fantasies i think i felt protective since the indian restaurant we'd only been out
00:33:33together once i'd taken her with me to chigwell when i went to see that everything was ready for
00:33:37work on the bathroom to begin and when i'd finished at mrs ripples i'd driven around to look at gerard's
00:33:43house is that it yes that's where my mother should be living instead of look she's coming out
00:33:52the woman he's married bloody gerard arnhem she's stolen from your mother i hate women like that i
00:33:59hate him more he let mom down badly i wish to god i could make him pay for it sorry i don't want to
00:34:07go on about my troubles let's go back to your place and we went back to her basement room the room
00:34:16where we led a strange dark shattered life together half of every night spent in her bed
00:34:20it was wonderful but sometimes i felt it wasn't real we should be together for talk and companionship
00:34:27not just for sex
00:34:28have some wine thank you
00:34:32to you

00:37:38we can learn how to make it that way
00:37:40can we
00:37:40yes
00:37:41some people say that to live fully you have to have done four things
00:37:46shall i tell you what they are
00:37:48yeah
00:37:48plant a tree
00:37:50write a poem
00:37:51make love with someone your own sex
00:37:54and
00:37:54kill someone
00:37:56the first two
00:37:59the first three really
00:38:00don't have much in common with the last
00:38:01don't laugh
00:38:02there are things that shouldn't be laughed at
00:38:05i wasn't laughing
00:38:06i don't suppose i'll ever do any of those things
00:38:09so i hope that won't mean i haven't lived
00:38:10when i'm with you i feel i'm really living
00:38:13i shall prove i love you
00:38:16by killing someone for you
00:38:18and you must kill someone for me
00:38:22oh sure
00:38:26who have you got in mind
00:38:27it doesn't have to be anyone in particular
00:38:29oh i see
00:38:30i would know what you'd done for me
00:38:32and you'd know what i'd done for you
00:38:34but no one else would
00:38:35we'd share these terrible secrets
00:38:37and would really know each of us meant more
00:38:40than all the world to the other one
00:38:42zenta
00:38:43i know you aren't serious
00:38:45i know these things are fantasies with you
00:38:47you may think you're deceiving me
00:38:48but you're not
00:38:49what things
00:38:53never mind
00:38:55you know and i know
00:38:56i don't know
00:38:57what things
00:38:59well

00:39:16lots of people do
00:39:17it's just a way of making life more interesting
00:39:19but when you
00:39:20when you talk of killing people
00:39:21it's ugly and pointless
00:39:23and a waste of time

00:39:37yes
00:39:37within reason
00:39:38oh how sick that makes me
00:39:40don't you see
00:39:42that what we have
00:39:43has to be beyond reason
00:39:44and to prove it
00:39:45we have to do the thing
00:39:46that's outside the law
00:39:48and outside reason
00:39:49you really are serious
00:39:50what do you think you are
00:39:53i am willing to kill someone
00:39:55to prove my love for you
00:39:56and you must do the same for me

00:40:16violence
00:40:17it doesn't just make me sick
00:40:18it bores me
00:40:19and now you say you want me to kill someone
00:40:21who do you
00:40:21what do you think i am
00:40:23i thought you were the other half
00:40:25of our united souls
00:40:26oh don't talk such rubbish
00:40:28it's all a lot of crap
00:40:30all this about souls and destinies
00:40:32why don't you grow up and live in the real world
00:40:34do you talk about living
00:40:35do you think you're living
00:40:37stuck here in this filthy dump
00:40:38i thought i'd heard it all
00:40:40all about
00:40:40going to mexico
00:40:41and india
00:40:42and wherever
00:40:42and your icelandic mother

00:41:23she couldn't mean it
00:41:24i was sure that when i went round the next day
00:41:27she'd have forgotten it all
00:41:28if she'd run into my arms

00:42:19mum and cheryl were away on holiday in cornwall
00:42:23i'd look forward to it
00:42:24the chance to be with center all the time
00:42:26now all it meant was greater loneliness
00:42:28i had begun to feel a little mad
00:42:33perhaps it was all an illusion
00:42:35that i had ever met her
00:42:37ever made love to her
00:42:38after all
00:42:39who knew what it was like to have schizophrenia
00:42:42till you had it yourself
00:42:43one night
00:42:45the fee came over to collect the rest of her things
00:42:47whatever happened to your eye
00:42:50you've been in a fight
00:42:52someone hit me
00:42:53a mistake
00:42:53they thought i was someone else

00:43:10it's the smallest
00:43:11she must really have liked that dress
00:43:14wasn't she
00:43:15you can see she just took it off
00:43:16and dumped it there like rubbish
00:43:18and somehow it got soaking wet first
00:43:21i suppose she just didn't think
00:43:22oh mind you
00:43:23she's very peculiar
00:43:24darren's mother said she'd feel left out
00:43:26if she wasn't a bridesmaid
00:43:27but i'm sure she wouldn't have
00:43:29they've really split up
00:43:30from the rest of the family that lot
00:43:32we asked her mother and father
00:43:34but they didn't come
00:43:34they didn't even answer the invitation
00:43:36someone said that center had a foreign mother
00:43:38and that she was dead
00:43:39i suppose they got hold of the wrong end of the stick
00:43:41oh something like that
00:43:42her mother died when she was born
00:43:45she came from some funny place
00:43:47greenland
00:43:48no
00:43:49iceland
00:43:51so that was true
00:43:52she told me true things
00:43:54and she'd embroidered the truth
00:43:55if the truth was adequate
00:43:56she told it
00:43:57if it hadn't enough drama
00:43:58she invented
00:43:59did i do that
00:44:00did we all
00:44:02i couldn't answer that
00:44:05but every night i drove round
00:44:07and looked at her shuttered window
00:44:08every morning i telephoned
00:44:10and always her door stayed closed
00:44:13and the telephone rang unanswered
00:44:15until one morning
00:44:17it was different
00:44:18hello
00:44:21this is mike jacopo

00:44:41centre pelham to phone me
00:44:43centre pelham who lives in the basement
00:44:46it's urgent
00:44:47thanks bye bye
00:44:48i'd half convinced myself
00:44:52that he was sent his lover
00:44:53when i remembered that there were other people in the house
00:44:55and the telephone didn't belong to just her
00:44:57it was in the hall
00:44:58that night i drove round again
00:45:00four drunks had just come out of the pub opposite
00:45:10it was all pretty sordid
00:45:12almost sinister
00:45:13suddenly i felt frightened
00:45:15what was i doing looking for love here
00:45:18obsessed with the woman who chose to live in such an awful place
00:45:21but the thought went as quickly as it had come
00:45:24for this time the front door was open
00:45:26who's that
00:45:36what the hell do you think you're doing
00:45:41i'm sorry i was looking for centre
00:45:43the front door was open

00:46:04she lived with her mother
00:46:06somehow that changed things
00:46:08i went home feeling almost light-hearted
00:46:11ridiculously relieved
00:46:13and then the solution came to me
00:46:16that nonsense about murder
00:46:18it was no more than a game
00:46:19a private secret game
00:46:21that had no connection with real life
00:46:23centre was a fantasist
00:46:25and she would want her lover
00:46:26to have an equally fantastic dream life
00:46:28she would know she was inventing
00:46:30and she would expect him to do the same
00:46:31why hadn't i seen that before
00:46:33and save the pain of the last days
00:46:35darling centre

00:50:30or too far
00:50:31what's this
00:50:33the body of a man
00:50:35found on a demolition site
00:50:37in kensal green
00:50:37northwest london
00:50:38has been identified
00:50:40as that of john sydney crucifer
00:50:42age 62
00:50:43described as a vagrant
00:50:44and of no fixed address
00:50:46police are treating the case
00:50:48as murder
00:50:49that'll do
00:50:51that'll have to do
00:50:54for a moment
00:50:56i wondered whether
00:50:57a truly sane
00:50:58and normal man
00:50:58would tell a woman
00:50:59he'd killed someone
00:51:00when he was really innocent
00:51:01then i dismissed the thought
00:51:04what's this
00:51:06read it
00:51:07it'll tell you what i did
00:51:09when did you do it
00:51:13last night
00:51:14after you left me
00:51:15yes
00:51:16what happened
00:51:17you left here
00:51:18and drove to the harrow road
00:51:19did you
00:51:20i suppose you had
00:51:21a piece of luck
00:51:22and just found him
00:51:23there hanging about
00:51:24let's just take it
00:51:25i did it
00:51:26how did you do it
00:51:28how did you kill him
00:51:30i don't want to talk
00:51:31about it
00:51:31i know
00:51:32you strangled him
00:51:33i
00:51:33yes
00:51:35it was dark
00:51:36was it
00:51:36yes
00:51:36yes it was one in the morning
00:51:37don't ask me anymore
00:51:38about it
00:51:39oh
00:51:40you did it for me
00:51:42of course
00:51:43that's what we agreed
00:51:45i hadn't enjoyed
00:51:48this inquisition
00:51:48but now i felt relief
00:51:49this particular game
00:51:51was over
00:51:52and we could forget it
00:51:53play acting
00:51:54was natural to her
00:51:55and i'd have to make up
00:51:55my mind to live with it
00:51:57all my life
00:51:59i'd been taught
00:52:00to be a law-abiding person
00:52:02to respect authority
00:52:04man-made government
00:52:05loving center
00:52:07as i did
00:52:07i had to change
00:52:09we don't see the world
00:52:12in quite the same way
00:52:13you and i philip
00:52:14i know you're going to learn
00:52:16to see it as i do
00:52:17but it hasn't happened yet
00:52:18i mean
00:52:19seeing it as a place
00:52:21of mystery and magic
00:52:22on a different plane
00:52:24from the dull
00:52:25practical things
00:52:26that people waste
00:52:27their lives on
00:52:27when you come
00:52:29on that plane
00:52:29with me
00:52:30you'll find
00:52:31a world of
00:52:32wonderful
00:52:33occult things
00:52:34where everything
00:52:34is possible
00:52:35nothing is barred
00:52:37there aren't any
00:52:38policemen
00:52:39and there aren't
00:52:39any laws
00:52:40you took
00:52:41one step
00:52:42towards that plane
00:52:43when you killed
00:52:44that old man
00:52:44for my sake
00:52:45did you know that
00:52:47i found i couldn't
00:52:48answer her
00:52:49but i kissed her
00:52:50instead
00:52:51and that seemed
00:52:51to satisfy her
00:52:52one sunday morning
00:52:56i woke in her bed
00:52:57and reached out
00:52:58for her
00:52:58she wasn't there
00:53:00there was a note
00:53:03on her pillow
00:53:03back soon
00:53:05i had to go out
00:53:07it was important
00:53:08wait for me
00:53:10center
00:53:11center
00:53:34where have you been
00:53:35and what have you
00:53:36done to your
00:53:36beautiful hair
00:53:37i haven't cut it off
00:53:38i just bundled
00:53:39it up under
00:53:40this cap

00:53:47you weren't worried
00:53:48you had my note
00:53:49of course
00:53:50but you didn't
00:53:50say where you were
00:53:51i went to prove
00:53:52my love for you
00:53:53you don't have
00:53:53to prove anything
00:53:54i did what you did
00:53:55i killed someone
00:53:57center
00:54:00listen to me
00:54:01it's very important
00:54:02i had to get up
00:54:04early because i was
00:54:04going to chigwell
00:54:05and it's a very
00:54:06long way

00:54:07well a place
00:54:09called grange hill
00:54:10it's the next station
00:54:11it was the nearest
00:54:13one to where
00:54:13gerald arnhem lived
00:54:15you have guessed
00:54:17have you
00:54:17it's gerald arnhem

00:54:20for you
00:54:21i killed him
00:54:22at eight o'clock
00:54:23this morning
00:54:24you did what
00:54:25i'd been observing
00:54:27him
00:54:27i'd been over
00:54:28to that house
00:54:29you showed me
00:54:29twice last week
00:54:30he takes his dog
00:54:32for a walk
00:54:32in those woods
00:54:33every morning
00:54:34before he goes
00:54:34to work
00:54:35his dog
00:54:36yes
00:54:37a little black dog
00:54:38scotty
00:54:38i chose arnhem
00:54:40because he was
00:54:41your enemy
00:54:42how did it happen
00:54:44i came up to him
00:54:45holding my eye
00:54:46i said i'd got
00:54:48something in my eye
00:54:49and it was hurting
00:54:49and would he help
00:54:50me get it out
00:54:51that was clever
00:54:53wasn't it
00:54:54yes
00:54:54it's very clever
00:54:55he was as near
00:54:58to me
00:54:58as you are now
00:54:59i held my face up
00:55:02and he bent down
00:55:03to look at it
00:55:04i knew where
00:55:05to strike
00:55:06i stabbed him
00:55:07in the heart
00:55:08with a glass dagger
00:55:09with what
00:55:10my venetian dagger
00:55:12didn't i ever
00:55:13show you
00:55:13i did have two
00:55:15they're made
00:55:16of morano glass
00:55:17i did feel sorry
00:55:19for the poor little
00:55:19dog though
00:55:20it ran up to him
00:55:21and started this
00:55:22awful whimpering
00:55:23a glass dagger
00:55:25i marveled at her
00:55:27inventiveness
00:55:27for half a minute
00:55:29i'd believed her
00:55:30but now i recognized
00:55:31another fantasy
00:55:32gerard arnon
00:55:33disliked dogs
00:55:35he wouldn't have
00:55:36had one in the
00:55:36house
00:55:37i was frightened
00:55:38coming back
00:55:38in the train
00:55:39i wasn't sure
00:55:40if there was any
00:55:41blood on my clothes
00:55:42and i kept thinking
00:55:43people were looking
00:55:44at me
00:55:44but i'm sure
00:55:45they weren't
00:55:46when you plunge
00:55:47those daggers in
00:55:48they break off
00:55:49at the handle
00:55:49and only leave
00:55:50a scratch to show
00:55:51the victim
00:55:52doesn't even bleed
00:55:53no
00:55:54no
00:55:55anyway
00:55:56i put on jeans
00:55:57and got my hair
00:55:58hidden
00:55:58so people would
00:55:59think i was a boy
00:56:00i'll take these
00:56:02clothes off now
00:56:03though
00:56:03i don't feel
00:56:04quite clean
00:56:05after all that
00:56:06she undressed
00:56:07and stood there
00:56:08smiling at me
00:56:09i'm tired now
00:56:12i think i'll go
00:56:13to bed
00:56:14philip

00:56:39understand it
00:56:40you couldn't
00:56:41love someone
00:56:42as i had loved
00:56:42her
00:56:43and then be
00:56:43turned off
00:56:44by nothing
00:56:44more than
00:56:45lies and
00:56:45daydreams
00:56:46for that was
00:56:48all they were

01:20:21and we'd like to ask you a few questions
01:20:22if you can spare us some of your time
01:20:23at home or in your office
01:20:24whichever you prefer

01:20:37i'll be frank with you mr warden
01:20:38we asked you to come here
01:20:39as a result of a rather interesting coincidence
01:20:42oh yes
01:20:42there was an incident in your area
01:20:45a minor matter
01:20:46and a number of officers
01:20:48paid a visit to a house near you
01:20:49during the course of this
01:20:51a woman officer
01:20:51saw a certain statue
01:20:53in your garden
01:20:54oh
01:20:55she very intelligently
01:20:57connected it with the one
01:20:58missing from mrs myerson's garden
01:21:00the description was on
01:21:01the metropolitan police computer
01:21:03is it valuable then
01:21:04mrs myerson's late husband
01:21:05paid 18 pounds for it at auction
01:21:07i don't know if you'd call that valuable
01:21:09i
01:21:09well i did take it
01:21:11i stole it if you like
01:21:13but i did think
01:21:14mistakenly as it happens
01:21:15that i had a right to it
01:21:16are you going to charge me
01:21:18with stealing it
01:21:19well
01:21:20is that your
01:21:21chief concern
01:21:22mr warden
01:21:23what
01:21:23i don't understand
01:21:25do you want me to make a statement
01:21:27if you would
01:21:28well
01:21:30the truth is
01:21:30the statue originally belonged
01:21:32wait a minute sir
01:21:32we need a record of this
01:21:34so i took it
01:21:36i thought i was entitled to
01:21:38i had no idea it had been sold
01:21:40i'm prepared to compensate mrs myerson
01:21:42i'm not sure the owner is particularly concerned
01:21:45about the statue in the present circumstances
01:21:47is that all then
01:21:50all for now
01:21:52yes
01:21:52are you going to prosecute me for taking the statue
01:21:54oh i don't think that would be necessary sir
01:21:57it would be rather a waste of time and the public's money
01:22:00thank you for coming in
