00:00Police in England and Wales will now be required to record ethnicity and nationality in child
00:07sexual abuse cases, following a review into so-called grooming gangs that found the issue
00:13had long been avoided.
00:15Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced the policy after accepting all 12 recommendations
00:21from Baroness Louise Casey's audit on group-based child sexual abuse.
00:26Casey's report found evidence in the local policing areas of Greater Manchester, West
00:33and South Yorkshire of a disproportionate number of Asian men among the suspects in such cases.
00:41The issue resurfaced in January after Elon Musk criticised the UK government's handling of
00:48past child exploitation cases, following reports that Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips had
00:54rejected calls for a national inquiry.
00:59The government has now agreed to launch one under pressure, despite warnings that victims
01:04want action, not more reviews.
