00:00what's up friends I got some questions about the desktop environment or the
00:07window manager that I'm using here I know it's beautiful and sleek and worth
00:15trying and installing it's a max interactive desktop this one and this is
00:29the page tells about how to install it on Linux in general it's mostly the native
00:38desktop environment for IRIX SGI's IRIX if you don't know it so I thought of
00:48installing it on Debian and sharing that with you I installed it on Arch Linux
00:59which is one of the supported distributions it's also supported on
01:05Debian based distributions as well as Red Hat as you can see in this page
01:22it says here that it is for Ubuntu doesn't mention anything about Debian I don't
01:29have an old version or installation of max desktop on my Debian installation
01:35that's why I don't need to run any of the steps of the backup if you do have an
01:43old installation you may need to run these commands and probably these ones in
01:49order to get the newer version you may need to read the requirements and make
01:56sure you have them in your system before we go with the installation let me
02:01show you my Debian system here is my Debian system it's 11 I guess I didn't
02:19install the newer one I believe there is no big difference I'm gonna have an SSH
02:32connection to it to run the commands directly on this terminal emulator this
02:40error keeps happening because before I had connections with the same IP address
02:47okay we need to be root so I'm gonna simply switch to root on my Debian system
03:12let's run up update okay there are two different guides I didn't see this one this is for Debian and this is for Ubuntu it says here that for Debian it isn't tested so let's test it out here
03:39the same the same steps for backing up the old installations of max desktop the
03:50requirements you may need to know about them and read about them
03:55in order to have the installations working flawlessly on your system
04:07all right I have these ones installed this is the first step which is installing cpp etc
04:13we will install pavu control so the first command was this one
04:29and now this command I believe this is about the sound and audio and stuff
04:49okay here there is something different to consider between Debian 9 and Debian 10 and the newer and also dev1 dev1 dev1 is Debian but without systemd
05:13I have here Debian 11 if you have something newer also than Debian 11 you can run the same command if you have Debian 9 you run this command so I'm gonna install this package
05:31like this okay and the next command should be this one
05:45okay and then this one for the fonts copy the full command
06:03and paste like this you can pause the video in order to type the command correctly
06:13Y and enter here
06:19the installation of the packages is done we only need to confirm here
06:29it's not a big deal since
06:33this is mostly about some services and it gets the confirmation from the user
06:38from the user since he may be using a server and
06:42some of the services he may not want to
06:44restart
06:46that's why they confirm like this
06:50we change directory into
06:54uh
06:56slash TMP
06:58the temporary directory
07:00we download the script
07:14last time I made a mistake when I installed this on Arch Linux
07:18and the mistake was
07:20not using the official script
07:22that's why probably I had some
07:24issues there
07:26and eventually it worked
07:28so it's possible to use the official script
07:30or to use
07:32the
07:34native method on Arch Linux
07:38okay
07:40we make it
07:42uh
07:44executable
07:46I'm running these commands as root
07:56which you shouldn't I guess
07:58it's not
08:00I mean it's fine for me
08:02now you change your user to root
08:04in my case I don't need to do that
08:06and
08:08we can run the script by running this command if you're not in that directory
08:12or
08:14or by running
08:16dot slash
08:18and the script
08:20itself
08:22I'm done running the script
08:24and
08:26it says here that
08:28the release octane 2.2.0
08:30has been
08:32installed
08:34in the script
08:36and
08:38it says here that
08:40O
08:42has been installed successfully
08:44uh
08:46it wants us to go back to the
08:48plain user
08:50let's exit out of here
08:52clear
08:54and then
08:56we change directory to home
08:58and
09:00they want us to
09:02back up
09:04the
09:06user preferences
09:08there is no such thing
09:12it says here that
09:14if you want to customize your environment
09:18you should refer to this book here
09:20it gives a link
09:22and it tells here about
09:24the customization of
09:26this desktop environment
09:28ok so
09:30let's test the
09:32configuration that we have
09:34here
09:36we should log out here
09:38we should log out here
09:42since we're using a different desktop environment
09:52and just like any
09:54newly installed or any
09:56installed desktop environment or window manager
09:58we should from our
10:00desktop manager like lightdm
10:02and gdm etc
10:04we should have a new entry for it
10:06to which we can
10:08switch and use
10:12in my case i have gdm
10:14as you can see
10:16and in this
10:18icon in the
10:20lower right
10:22side of the screen
10:24we have
10:26a bunch of
10:28desktop environments
10:30we should choose max interactive desktop
10:32that we would use
10:34now
10:36this is a good
10:38notification
10:40with the good news
10:42which says first time user
10:44the max interactive desktop is now
10:46properly configured for the user account user
