00:01
hello friends there is a desktop environment that was on SGI's IREX
00:08
operating system it is ported into Linux and I found it on the AUR so if we
00:19
look for Mac's desktop we can find it as you can see here and it sounds like it is
00:30
maintained so let me this is on the terminal you should be on your home
00:41
folder you can install this piece of software through the AUR helper or
00:48
manually as I'm gonna do it now it's called Mac's desktop so in the using the
00:57
AUR helper you should run a command like this and Mac's double X desktop should
01:05
install it for you you can do the same with Paroo if you use any other
01:12
AUR helper and has a similar syntax to pacman it should be
01:21
installed this way otherwise you should know what is the command that you need
01:26
to use in order to install this desktop environment
01:42
in my case I'm gonna go with the manual way which can be replaced it simply with
01:49
that command which is your AUR helper's installation command so I'm gonna clone
01:58
the link that I have here I can copy this one and paste like this enter all right
02:10
so we change directory into max desktop a directory that has been made during the
02:18
cloning of the repository with the same name as the package and then we can make
02:25
our package by running make pkg or make package which is it's a short form for it
02:33
dash si enter the password here
02:45
okay so these ones sound like we need to install them using pacman so should run on
02:57
this command should copy them and paste them
03:27
this yeah these dependencies not each and every one of them exists on these two
03:48
ones it cannot find them so let's try to install the others y and enter let's try
03:56
again to make the package okay we are getting closer let's try to install
04:13
those pieces of software from the AUR using an AUR helper I believe they are
04:22
in order
04:24
y-bin.ket
04:29
sorry this there is a mistake here it should be arch like this
04:47
cd y bin make pkg-si password y and enter all right let's clear clear out the screen
05:10
and go back a folder to the parent folder and then try again with the max desktop environment
05:22
i made a mistake when i cloned the ur helper into the same directory i mean from within
05:32
max desktops made folder all right so let's try now with yay for some of these pieces of
05:42
software in case they exist in the ur only
06:02
okay so we probably here press y to import these keys
06:22
all right password and then y and enter probably we found some of the dependencies that
06:38
the application misses in the ur if you followed me you're supposed to succeed with this step
06:50
of course here y and enter for the confirmation
06:55
throughout the installation you will be asked to input your password make sure you input it
07:05
correctly s y and enter here all right
07:09
uh if you are confused like me we tried to run not this one but we try to yeah we try to make the
07:25
package max desktop uh with from within its directory that was created with its name uh some of the
07:35
some of the applications exist in the official repositories of arch linux some others don't since some others don't
07:45
they are probably in the ur to make the process faster i uh built uh yay the ur helper in order to install
07:59
those dependencies so here is the list of the dependencies that are probably missing not all of them
08:08
the ones that are in the ur i uh installed them and now let's try to run make package again to see
08:17
what's missing and what's met
08:21
all right
08:25
all right this is promising it sounds like it found the dependencies which i never experienced it before
08:33
i mean i never installed a piece of software from the ur and it said to me that it doesn't find
08:39
some of its dependencies or all so i built all the missing dependencies and installed others some are
08:48
compiled some others are pre-compiled so i installed them and let's see how it's gonna be here probably
08:59
the last time i input my password for this installation and then confirm with y and enter here
09:07
okay i'm gonna switch to this desktop environment which i uh installed i wish it works uh in i'm gonna
09:26
use uh gdm which you can install by running the command uh sudo pacman dash s gdm you can you can
09:37
install sddm whichever you like run in this command so for gdm it should be like this and for sddm should
09:46
be like this uh the next thing after you install that uh desktop manager you run the command sudo system
09:58
ctl enable now sddm if you install it sddm and gdm if it is gdm of course uh i'm assuming you don't have
10:13
any desktop manager nor anything of display like a window manager or a desktop environment i have a gdm
10:22
installed and the service enabled i can prove that i have gdm server server service running and enabled
10:30
by running the status command here
10:35
and you can see that it's working uh in your case you may be doing all of this on your newly installed
10:43
arch linux which is without any of this if you have uh if you have it like that you can choose one of
10:54
these two ones to choose whichever desktop environment you want you can use a xenet rc which i still don't
11:02
know how i will look for the commands probably otherwise this may be the one of the ways to do it
11:10
there isn't only gdm and sddm there is also lightdm and so on you can choose whichever you like lightdm
11:17
i didn't mention it because it has an extra package that needs to be installed which is the greeter
11:25
i'm gonna stop the recording you will not notice it since i'm gonna do some video editing and stick the
11:32
two videos that are made the one before the installation and the one after the installation and
11:38
start in the desktop environment and you're gonna know whether this worked or not
11:45
as you can probably see the max interactive desktop works and it sounds like it works without problems so
11:55
far i am fascinated by it looks so cool let's try to see what's the web browser if we can say here
12:06
the animation is cool for example this is my screen recording software i can minimize it like this the
12:16
terminal i can minimize it like this i can open it back like this it's a little similar to next steps
12:24
desktop environment which is window maker okay so i tried to open that thing didn't want to open i don't
12:34
know why let's try to see something else external yeah here it is which looks so cool it's different that
12:43
blue background i do like it so much i had to use it in open in order to open vocal screen the screen
12:51
recording software that i have i checked the official documentation of max interactive desktop and i thought
13:07
that it may not be uh sufficient enough and full enough if this tutorial misses some of these steps that
13:19
i'm gonna show you now so please apply them if you don't mind we go to uh dot max desktop and then desktop and
13:33
okay and then we says that it should have something like this but as you can see this file doesn't exist on my
13:51
system so let's make it with the configuration that's mentioned here
14:03
okay the documentation says that uh this we should add this this last part starting from this column
14:26
because it says that you're supposed to have it the default one without it you add it yourself
14:35
so please make sure that you have this in case this file exists in your uh installation make sure you have
14:47
this line exactly the same as this i will link to the official installation in the description so you can
14:56
make sure that you have applied these steps i guess that's it for this video please don't forget
