00:42Hello, welcome from the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Telesu Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:52We begin with the news. Stay with us.
00:55On Tuesday morning Iran fired more than 350 ballistic missiles at Israeli-occupied territory, striking military facilities in Tel Aviv, including a Mossad headquarter.
01:09The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps maintained its counteroffensive against Israel.
01:15The spokesperson for the Israeli Ministry of Defense assured that they detected most of the attacks by the latest models of missiles launch and warned that the attack would continue.
01:23According to Israeli media, the attacks hit the center of Tel Aviv and the Herzliya area, where the Gilead camp is located, which houses high-level military intelligence units and the Israeli Armed Forces Center.
01:36Iran stated that it is exercising its right to self-defense against the world crimes against the world crimes.
01:57Iran stated that it is exercising its right to self-defense against the war crimes perpetrated
02:06by Israel.
02:07At the 78th UN plenary meeting, Iranian representative Amir Said Iravani explained that the Zionist
02:15regime mainly attacks residential areas, contrary to the Israeli narrative of carrying out surgical
02:21strikes without collateral damage.
02:25Iravani emphasized that Israeli bombings have resulted in 1,481 Iranians killed and wounded,
02:33including children.
02:35Given this situation, he emphasized that the Iranian armed forces have escalated their bombings
02:41against strategic targets in occupied territories, concentrating their attacks mainly on Tel
02:45Abif and Haifa, two of Israel's most important military centers.
03:03And on Tuesday morning, a massacre was perpetrated by the Israeli army against eight seekers in
03:30Hanjunis, with multiple Palestinians killed and injured.
03:34Gaza's Ministry of Health reports at least 60 Palestinians were killed and hundreds more
03:40injured, including dozens critically after Israeli occupation forces targeted civilians waiting
03:46for desperately needed aid at Altalia roundabout in Hanjunis this morning.
03:51Medical sources confirm the rising death toll and describe severe overcrowding in emergency
03:57rooms, intensive care units and operating rooms.
04:01Medical teams are reportedly struggling to treat the influx of casualties due to dangerously limited
04:07supplies of life-saving medicines and equipment.
04:11Now we have a short break coming up, first remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English,
04:20you'll find news in different formats, news updates and much more.
04:23And I'll be right back, stay with us.
04:25Welcome back.
04:43Let's now return to the topic of the current escalations in the Middle East between Israel
04:48and Iran following the preemptive attacks of Israel against Iran.
04:52And for that, we are joined by Yvonne Dr. Yvonne Tejes, international law expert.
04:57Welcome Dr. Yvonne to From the South.
05:00Thank you for having me.
05:02It's always a pleasure.
05:03Dr. Yvonne, today marks the fifth day of the ongoing escalation of hostilities between Israel
05:09and Iran following the first strikes of Israel against Iran and of course the legitimate response
05:15of the Iranian government against Israel.
05:18What can you tell us of the context of what is happening right now in that Middle Eastern
05:23region?
05:24Okay, well, definitely we're seeing an escalation of the Middle East conflict and that is bringing
05:34more actors to the scene.
05:36It doesn't mean that Iran has not been in the spotlight, but this time with a different
05:43aim and that is of course to in a way respond accordingly to its right of legitimate defense regarding
05:54Israel's attack on the first place.
05:58However, this doesn't underscore what has been happening before and that is of course a massive
06:08west position, hostile position towards what Iran means and towards what Iran means for the
06:21region itself because of course the threats probably that it implies for how the western countries
06:36see Iran and the fact that Israel is a direct ally of the United States and Iran has been a longstanding
06:44enemy, a non-friend state for the U.S. means that there is an ongoing strategy and I believe so behind what
06:58we're seeing and the actions in Israel.
07:00And that means this hostility that Iran is facing, I think that probably with what we could see and in
07:07face of what President Trump has said to Iran to give it up and to give up this atomic weapons, this nuclear
07:21weapons as it's been said.
07:23So defines or shows that there is a high probability of the western allies and directed by the U.S., executed
07:33by Israel to try to deploy Iran's regime and this is what that's what we are probably seeing through Israel's actions.
07:47However, it is not very understandable how can Israel manage two or three conflicts
07:54at the same time. I'm talking about Gaza, I'm talking about Yemen and now I'm talking about what it means
08:02to enter into a military, into military hostilities during a long period of time. So that's also an issue that we
08:12have to take into account. I think that probably the strategy of the West and probably the strategy of
08:19Israel is to deploy Iran's first and primarily commanders and leaders in order to try to destabilize
08:30the regime because this is not a new conflict. This is an ongoing and it goes back to at least the first
08:41part of the of the 20th century and regarding also what has happened after the World War II and how
08:52the definition or the redefinition of the territories in the Middle East came along with this new kind of
09:00conflict, political conflicts, religious conflicts regarding these two states.
09:06Dr. Yvonne, we saw yesterday that U.S. President Donald Trump left abruptly from the G7 summit that is
09:13being held, that was being held in Canada and while he was doing so he also provided statements calling on
09:19the people of Tehran to evacuate. Do you believe that there could be a possible direct intervention because
09:25we know that in a way indirectly they are supporting Israel both military and politically but do you
09:30believe that it's possible for the U.S. to intervene directly in this conflict following the historic
09:35the historical record that we saw direct intervention from the U.S. in Iraq, in Libya, in these other nations
09:42in Syria, in these other nations that Israel also wanted to target as they were they alleged that it was
09:48they were afraid to their existence. Okay yes well in the line of of what I said before we know that
09:58Israel is completely sponsored by the U.S. even though when Israel attacked Iran five days ago the U.S. came
10:06along saying that they didn't know about the attacks and they like posed the distance between Israel
10:15attacks in the first place but we saw that the the backup came coming afterwards when uh uh President
10:21Trump was uh requesting Iran to to give up uh and of course telling people to ever quit however even
10:30though we know the history of the U.S. uh and we know this would be a kind of a in in a way like a proxy
10:38war regarding that Israel is the one executing on the on the territory the actions and it's the one that
10:46that's being exposed and the U.S. is just uh in the back of of of of the whole scenario um I think that
10:54there could be a higher probability that the U.S. comes along because uh and and I think if Iran shows
11:02some kind of of a weakness or maybe um commit some flaws or some probably mistakes I'm talking about
11:11military strategy that may be uh a possibility that the U.S. will try to get advantage of however there is
11:20another issue and that that is what is Trump facing inside his own country uh we saw what happened during this
11:30military parade we saw and we are aware of what's happening uh regarding the population of the U.S. and
11:37what he's facing inside his country so I don't know uh and this is a question that I just posed
11:46if that could be uh a kind of a deterrent for the U.S. uh because of what it's facing inside and and
11:55probably that would mean that the U.S. will just stay uh like a spectator seeing and sponsoring
12:02Israel in the territory but not getting into the territory itself I'm not very sure right now what
12:09could happen even though and I agree with you of course we know we know that the U.S. has not
12:16restrained itself for getting into others conflicts or getting into other territories and this could be
12:23uh an opportunity that they are waiting for even though we know that's contrary to international
12:33law we know that's not ethical under international politics we know how they have behaved and that's
12:39that's what probably what is lying behind on the other part of the show uh there's Israel itself
12:47uh Netanyahu uh Netanyahu uh by himself um knowing that he is facing very serious um accusations for the from
12:58the international criminal court regarding uh the crimes that he's being uh adjudicated at this time
13:04and we know that he he knows that he's facing those probably um that could also mean uh and and I heard that
13:13um from coming from some specialists that maybe Netanyahu in the end knows that he's gonna be facing
13:20very serial a very serious um issues at international tribunals uh so that would probably mean that he wants
13:31to just get on with all this um I mean with all these sections that he has proposed before and that means
13:40also getting into into war and direct opposition with his enemies maybe because he knows that by the end
13:47he's not going to be in power anymore uh will he who's probably will be facing something else and this
13:53line that I'm saying at this time is um some opinions from specialists that I've heard um in in Europe
14:02basically uh and in the international criminal court regarding Netanyahu's actions that cannot be
14:08completely understood do you believe because we following all these escalation we have seen
14:15countries of the region are Muslim Islamic countries that have come to unite have presented a united front
14:20in support of Iran and calling for the immediate stop of the Israeli attacks and calling to the
14:26international community to exercise their that pressure to bring a stop to these actions and also from
14:31other countries from the south south have also expressed their their support for Iran's right to
14:38defense themselves following the Israeli aggressions do you think that in Iran after the conflict settles
14:44do you think it will come it will have a lot of rebuilding to do of course but do you think it will
14:48come more strong stronger his its position in the international radar both politically and legally will be reinforced
14:56well I think we're we're we're facing very very difficult times and I'm not sure if I'm in a position to
15:08um announce that um why why am I saying this because um definitely Iran has the right of legitimate defense
15:19that's uh a right that every state has when it is under attack or under imminent threat of attack and that's
15:28what has happened over here so Iran has the right to defend itself he's it is what it's doing right now
15:36um and this of course comes along with our support because uh we know that what Israel did was
15:46an attack under uh a suspicious uh of uh because it was suspicious of uh nuclear activity in Iran but it
15:55didn't have the enough evidence to support that internationally and if it was the case and just let's
16:04imagine that Iran was using nuclear energy for wrongful acts that is not the role of another state to come as
16:15police or to come as a judge or to come as a a kind of impose punishments and even violate the the
16:22prohibition of the use of force in order to just attack another country because it has um something
16:29going on and probably something wrongful I mean in this case not there's not a any other state that has
16:35that right because there's no state that has more or better rights than other so in this case
16:42that calls for a support of course of Iran uh Iran we know that has the the means to defend itself but
16:51in the end war is war and that will only uh end up affecting the people affecting the population we know
16:58that people are getting displaced by now people are getting killed by now so in the end it will only affect
17:04people regarding the your question as if Iran will come up stronger or no probably it will in the face
17:14of how Israel is uh being seen towards the whole international scene because in Israel right now and
17:24I'm going to call it the way it is it's committing genocide in Gaza uh there's enough evidence to
17:30support that uh Netanyahu is facing um it's facing uh claims towards the international criminal court
17:38regarding crimes against humanity uh and Israel has not stopped uh for almost a year and a half of
17:46attacking on an un um unarmed uh state unarmed people killing civilians uh so that is I mean Israel is not in
17:58a good position in an international position Israel is being seen as a genocide state and in that case
18:05if we are comparing Iran towards Israel in the international in the international scenario is
18:12Iran will come up I think a little bit stronger regarding that it in the first place is defending
18:17itself because it was a a an unprecedented attack and on the first and on the second uh place it's uh towards
18:26uh a state that is already highly questioned in the international scene so probably that will give
18:34more force to the supporters of Iran uh than what is happening uh with Israel thank you very much
18:42Dr. Yvonne for your time hearing from the south and for all your inputs thank you thank you for the
