Tourists stranded in Israel as missiles fly, planes grounded

Woken by air raid sirens, hurrying to bomb shelters, scouring travel sites for escape routes — thousands of tourists in Israel have found their holiday plans upended by the country's conflict with Iran.

Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran in the early hours of Friday, shutting down the national airspace and telling people to remain where they were as the arch foes traded deadly blows.

The violence has left around 40,000 tourists blocked in Israel, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

00:00Yesterday we wanted to go visit the old city, but the Israeli police were at the Damascus gate.
00:15Reservations have already been set, so hopefully we can gain entrance.
00:19We expected Houthis to be sending missiles to Israel, because they've been doing that
00:31for some time now.
00:32We did see Iron Dome intercept Houthi missiles down in the Dead Sea.
00:38And we were still okay with that coming here, planning our visit, but again, we didn't expect
00:44Israel to attack Iran, which is a completely different level of escalation.
00:50So that is obviously not, doesn't make us feel any more comfortable.
00:58A new experience for me personally, being in America, and it is scary to hear missiles being
01:07intercepted, to feel the concussive blast even though it's up in the sky, and to have to
01:14take your son, and your father, and go down to a bomb shelter, which is just something
01:21you don't even have to consider in America, at least not since the 60s.
01:27So it makes me feel uneasy.
01:30I'm very anxious to get back home.
01:32We're looking for alternative places this day, because it may be a lengthy one.
01:37And so, looking for like kitchenettes, some place to kind of reduce some of our expenses.
01:44And also checking on, of course, flight schedules, perhaps out of Jordan, if possible, and because
01:51it may be a while before Israeli airports open up.
01:56We're looking for alternative places.
02:08We're looking for a solution.
02:15If you want to go to this place, we're looking for a solution.
02:22so i'm from london and i'm here because my daughter lives here and i was coming for a week
02:34to see her and other family and within two days of being here israel attacked around
02:42so now i'm stuck here with my daughter and i really i don't want to leave until her boyfriend
02:48is back with her and i can't leave because there's no flights and at the moment it's surreal but we
02:55feel very safe the hotel has a shelter um when we're in the shelter we haven't experienced any
03:02noise it's obviously terrible what's happening with the casualties but for me personally at the
03:09moment i feel better being here than in london watching it all on the news knowing my daughter
03:16is here so for now we're good
03:44you
