00:00Hi, I'm Jim from Hot Milk, and today I'm going to talk to you about our gear on the road.
00:16We've got an album coming out on the 27th of June called Corporation Pop.
00:20Go fucking buy it.
00:22Yeah, we're going to talk you through it all.
00:24I've been with Gordon Smith for about six or seven years now.
00:29We got introduced by a mutual friend, and they've been brilliant all the way through.
00:36They've supported us on whatever I've needed.
00:39They've always listened to us.
00:40It's a great relationship.
00:42Each one of these guitars is custom-made for me.
00:45I can't buy them anywhere else.
00:48This was actually probably the third guitar I got from them.
00:53It's a Gatsby shape.
00:57I really like the offset shapes.
00:59They just sit really nicely.
01:02I always go for a sand-off here to fit my arm better.
01:07It's a real simple guitar.
01:09We've got a three-way switch here controlling P90 pickups.
01:15We've got a through ferrule for strings on the body.
01:19I think the hardware is goater on most, if not all, of these guitars.
01:26We've got some locking tuners here.
01:31And then, yeah, this hasn't got a push-pull.
01:32It's just a simple volume knob for both and a tone knob.
01:37So for this, most of it will come from the bridge pickup.
01:40All my cleans, 90% of my cleans switch to neck.
01:45It just gives a bit of a warmer, more well-rounded sound.
01:48I'm using Diodario NYXL strings on this.
01:53They just last so long.
01:55The sound is so bright and crisp.
01:5752 through 11.
01:59They just sound great.
02:01They just really rip.
02:03And then we've got a bunch of custom picks somewhere.
02:06But we've got, we've had a bunch of custom picks.
02:09Yeah, we're down to the last three now.
02:14So, yeah, there's one left.
02:18You're in luck.
02:19Oh, two left, sorry.
02:20Yeah.
02:22Yeah, here we go.
02:23I think it's 0.73, yeah.
02:26And it's Intune GP who make these.
02:29They've done this a really good deal.
02:32Love how they feel.
02:33Most of the time, the tone's set fully up.
02:38I'm just rolling up and down volume as and when I need to.
02:42And then we've got a bunch of wireless on this.
02:45So, we're using the Sennheiser EXW, yeah.
02:51This is Jay, by the way, our guitar tech.
02:53How's it going?
02:53You're okay.
02:55And this is in, it's not in GB.
02:59Whatever band America has.
03:01We've got two different rigs.
03:02We've got GB for the UK and a separate band for the US.
03:07Tuning is in Dadgad for this.
03:09So, I like to play in open tunings as I kind of grew up listening to folk music and stuff like that.
03:17And I just feel like it just has a really big, powerful sound.
03:21So, yeah, all of our guitars are in this weird tuning.
03:26So, to keep us locked in, we write them here.
03:31So, these two are both in the same tuning.
03:33And then this is in the C-sharp equivalent.
03:36So, it's just dropped down another semitone.
03:39And then this is in the C equivalent.
03:41So, that's a tone compared to this one.
03:44Just going back to this one real quick.
03:45This one only comes out for one song on this set.
03:47It's for zoned out.
03:49It's a bit of a kind of brighter, poppier song.
03:53And the P90s just seems to cut through because there's quite a lot of synth in that song.
03:58So, I just felt the balance was a little bit better.
04:00Because it wasn't super over-driven.
04:05Hit.
04:05Oh, no.
04:06It's taken a hit.
04:07So, that's probably the first time this guitar has ever come out.
04:10This is a brand new guitar.
04:13It's come out.
04:15We had this made just before we started this tour.
04:19So, one thing I forgot to mention is all my guitars got my name on them, which is cool.
04:25Again, Gordon Smith killing this.
04:27It's based off the offset Gatsby shape, but it's a slightly different shape.
04:35It's a little bit squarer off here.
04:38It goes a little bit higher up here.
04:40Obviously, the scratch board is on this one, but not on the other one.
04:44I decided that I just wasn't getting any use at the tone pot.
04:47So, I've just stuck to a simple volume knob.
04:50Again, three-way switch.
04:51And then, in these are, so, Gordon Smith custom wind their own pickups.
05:00Essentially, they're kind of based off, I think, a 500T Gibson model humbucker.
05:07I just found them in the studio.
05:10They were just super ripping on rhythm tones, and they're equally as good for lead.
05:21So, this is currently what I'm playing most of the set on.
05:24I'm playing for songs like Night Seconds to Midnight.
05:27I just want to know what happens when I'm dead.
05:31It's got quite a, again, both of them have got quite a thin radius on the neck.
05:37I just find it easier to get round rather than like a big, thick Gibson neck.
05:42It's not too different to the last guitar.
05:45This one hasn't got locking tuners, but it's go to again.
05:50Go to bridge.
05:51Yeah, there's not so many differences here.
05:55And then, we have on this one.
05:59So, this was, I think it's the first guitar I ever got from Gordon Smith.
06:03It's their deluxe model.
06:05Again, this has got a, this is when I was first starting out,
06:09so, kind of working out what I liked and what I disliked about guitars.
06:12So, this has got a tone pot on this.
06:16Again, I don't really use it.
06:17It's just locked up.
06:18But full volume knob, three-way switch.
06:21They've got this wrapper out.
06:23So, this is great for intonation, but it's, as you can see,
06:28it's a slight pain in the ass to restring as you end up chipping away at the paintwork,
06:33which is this kind of, depending on where you're looking at it,
06:36it's this kind of like oily purple that sometimes looks green,
06:41sometimes looks red, depending on where the light goes.
06:43I just thought it was really cool.
06:44But, unfortunately, it's had a few war wounds,
06:47which is not very easy to fix.
06:50We've got lace drop and gain pickups in this.
06:58They custom did these, which is amazing.
07:01They gave it this over, and it just sounds ripping.
07:04This is on a lot more of the heavier songs as it's tuned down to C-sharp.
07:12So, songs like Horror Show, Heart of My Deathbed,
07:15where it's a bit more single note heavy,
07:17just has a bit more body to it.
07:20Same strings, I guess, then.
07:21Again, wireless.
07:23And these, we change these.
07:24I basically flip the mute on and off as and when we change guitar.
07:30So, that's this one.
07:32And then, finally, we have this one, which is another Deluxe.
07:40This one, I don't know.
07:42It does have a...
07:43Yeah, so all of my guitars have got this kind of roll-off on the back,
07:45just so when I'm standing, it sits a bit better in the body.
07:48This one, I've got a slightly different pickup setup.
07:55So, I've got the humbucker here,
07:56and then I've got a lace sensor for my neck,
08:00which is because I play a bit more clean on this,
08:02and it's just not as low-heavy.
08:06It's not as kind of muffled, if you will.
08:09Again, same deal down here.
08:13Got tone, got volume, got the wraparound bridge.
08:15We learned from our mistakes first time,
08:17so we put a bit of tape here to stop scratching the shit out of it.
08:22Yeah, again, custom finish on it.
08:25Kind of wanted this antique kind of feel to it,
08:29so kind of, you know, painted it, sunburst,
08:31then painted it back, and then they sanded it back.
08:35Kind of got custom inlays, lock-in tuners,
08:39go to lock-in tuners.
08:41And then, yeah, like Jay said with this one,
08:43it's 56 through 11, yeah.
08:47And again, this is in the open tuning, but in C.
08:52So this one comes out on Breathing Underwater.
08:56I think, is that it for this set?
08:58No, it's one more before that.
09:02Over Your Dead Body.
09:05Yeah, so, mainly because of the tuning on this one,
09:08most of the tones are exactly the same with this.
09:13So, yeah, that's my guitars.
09:15So this is kind of our fly rig,
09:18but at the moment we're kind of rocking it as our pool rig.
09:21It's been a bit of a chop-and-change system
09:23for the last three, four years now,
09:26just trying to get it to a point where
09:28everything's running smoothly
09:30and we've got redundancy in spec.
09:32So it was kind of a bit of an amalgamation
09:36between the idea that I had.
09:39Mixing it in with the old rig.
09:41Yeah.
09:42Yeah, because we originally ran the playback system
09:46through Cymatic.
09:48So when we changed,
09:49because we changed,
09:50we had Kemper and Cymatic
09:51then we went on to the Cymatic and the Quad-Core Texes.
09:54So we built a rig for Quad-Core Texes and Cymatic.
09:57So we sat down and we kind of like planned it all out on Excel
10:00and then Justin McGrath,
10:03who helped us out massively
10:05with this kind of playback system,
10:07he built all this
10:09and then Jay has built all of this
10:13in his workshop.
10:15Yeah.
10:15He's done a great job.
10:16Yeah, it's been good.
10:19It's been good.
10:19So currently we are running
10:21a double computer redundancy system for playback.
10:25We're running through Ableset,
10:27which is controlled set-wise over here
10:31and we've also got one over there
10:33with Della on drums.
10:35Super easy to change the set list or whatever.
10:39So this is kind of what it looks like in performance mode
10:42and this is what it looks like in build mode.
10:44So you get an overview of this
10:46and this is kind of where we lock in during the show
10:48which is then controlling Ableton
10:51which our entire session's in.
10:53So we've got click,
10:55we've got timecode.
10:57We haven't got any timecode in this
10:58because we're not running LX.
10:59all the individual stems put into here
11:03and this is all fed out into these play audio.
11:08So this is running in an aggregate mode.
11:10So we've got, I think, 24 channels of playback split out
11:13just to give Jim a bit more control up front of house.
11:17Yep, this is also in this rap.
11:21We've got the sequencer here
11:23which is powering everything.
11:26We've got a radial switcher
11:27which in the event of failure in one of the computers
11:31it will fall from A to B.
11:35So, you know, if we ever have any issues on stage
11:38we're going to be picked up.
11:39We've also got these Universal Audio interfaces
11:46which are going to mine and Hannah's mics
11:48which have got like preamps and effects on
11:50like distortions, reverbs, etc.
11:56This is all the boring shit
11:58that goes to front of house.
12:00And then we've got neural DSP quad cortexes over here
12:04which I just really like the sound of.
12:09We've been, that's Tom's bass actually, I'll get mine out.
12:12We vary in tone quite a lot from song to song
12:16due to the difference in our songs.
12:19So we found that these were a real great compromise
12:23for still having a really solid sound
12:27but being able to swap between tones and effects
12:29really quickly.
12:30So, you know, we've got all the songs dialed in here.
12:36Yeah, you can go through them all.
12:37Each song's got its kind of different tone.
12:40The way these have been set out
12:42we're kind of still building them at the moment.
12:46We're going through like a second iteration of tones.
12:49So we've got like, you know, transposition here.
12:52We've got compression, distortion pedals up here
12:55and then we've got a split between two different heads and cabs
13:00which is then run through a doubler
13:02to give a bit of a wider spread.
13:03Both for my ears because I find it really difficult
13:07trying to sing and play guitar at the same time
13:11when everything's like super in the middle.
13:12So having that doubler, big shout out to Billy Hutton
13:16who helped us out there with this.
13:19But it's been a massive game changer.
13:21And then Jay, do you want to talk about what else is in there?
13:23It's a bit, yeah, the building aspect of things
13:25we're just, yeah, getting power locked in.
13:28We changed out the sequences for, we had,
13:32initially we had Furmans
13:34and then we changed out the sequences for,
13:38we've had no issues in terms of crashing now.
13:41It's a bit of a weird one
13:42because we changed two things at the time.
13:44It was the introduction of the Crux.
13:47As well as the chops.
13:48As well as the, yeah, as well as the DC7.
13:51We introduced the Crux.
13:52At the same time, we upgraded the Furman to this sequencer.
13:58We've had no issues with power, like, crashing or anything now.
14:02So we don't actually know what was causing it.
14:04No.
14:05But it's now not happening.
14:06So it's one of them.
14:07It's a definite upgrade, I think.
14:10It's a lot more solid.
14:12Yeah, yeah, it's way more solid than...
14:14And then we've also got this, a little baby bum.
14:17This is a little power amp.
14:18So for bigger shows,
14:21we'll have, like, some Marshall 1960Bs on stage
14:25and I'll just run this directly out of that.
14:28If you want to go around the back.
14:33We'll just run out of jackpot here straight into a cab
14:36and I guess it's a bit of, like, on-stage sound
14:39where, you know, if we're playing big stages
14:40it just gives you a bit more body and feeling on stage.
14:46Yeah, it's kind of it.
14:47Like, we've upgraded this from XLR outs.
14:52We've still got them for redundancy,
14:53but most of this is now on LK multi-pin
14:55just to make for quicker, easier changeovers.
14:59You know, just plug and play.
15:00Bam, bam, you're in.
15:03But yeah, it's not that complicated.
15:05And then we've got a guitar pedal somewhere.
15:08It's just a polytuner
15:10that I can tune during songs.
15:14At some point I might put an EQ pedal on here,
15:17but again, most of the work is done
15:19in that rack over there.
15:22Yeah.
15:23And then, yeah, my mic.
15:26Which is a Sennheiser EW
15:29something or other.
15:32I think, or maybe it was a G4.
15:34I don't know, we've literally just upgraded these.
15:36And then we've got the SE V7
15:38capsule.
15:41Just suits both mine and Hannah's vocals.
15:43And then, yeah, mic stand,
15:48picks, stage.
15:51So, yeah, we've got a new record coming out.
15:54We're playing a bunch of new songs
15:55live on this tour.
15:57And then we're going to be touring around Europe,
15:59touring around the UK,
16:01doing some shows in Japan.
16:04Yeah, super excited.
16:05Thanks for watching this.
16:06It's been my rundown.
16:13It's been my rundown.
