00:00Even when he was so hurt, he was still licking our face, trying to make us feel better,
00:05because he doesn't really like it when I cry.
00:07Freaking out. Yeah.
00:10We moved into a van for our dogs, and we were having non-stop adventures.
00:15But we had no idea that all of that was about to change.
00:20Dagwood was hit by a car yesterday.
00:22We put Bertha's pedal to the floor for 300 miles to an emergency vet.
00:26By the time we made it there, it had been six hours since he'd been hit.
00:31They said he had a less than 10% chance of surviving.
00:34And we said, you haven't met Dagwood.
00:37I just kept saying to myself, he survived that drive.
00:41If there was any dog in the world that was going to make it through that, it was going to be him.
00:46We stayed with him. We were sleeping on the ground next to him.
00:50We never left him.
00:52Stay with us, little bird. Please.
00:56He's alive. He'll be paralyzed, the doctor said.
01:00I was going to be there for him no matter what,
01:03and that Keith, that we both, were going to change our lives for him.
01:07Oh, that's kidding.
01:10They all sort of really rallied around him,
01:13and it started to feel like this community project.
01:16His vet tech said to me, you know, let's remind him what he's fighting for.
01:20What? It's your brother.
01:21Oh, Darien!
01:23We parked the van so he could see the van, because he loves the van.
01:29He'll be in there soon, buddy, I promise.
01:32And then let's let him go for a ride in a van.
01:35We have to kind of remind him that this is not his life now.
01:39This is temporary.
01:40Good boy!
01:41I think that's when we started to see that there was, like, a light at the end of the tunnel.
01:55Great job, buddy.
02:00You are a warrior, Dagwood.
02:02Come on, buddy!
02:03Good boy!
02:04Good boy, Dagwood!
02:05Good boy!
02:06Good boy!
02:07Good boy, Dagwood!
02:10Yes!
02:10You did all the things they didn't think you could.
02:14Oh, good job putting that weight down.
02:17Oh, good boy!
02:19Good boy!
02:20Good boy!
02:27You're walking out of this with all four legs.
02:34He's alive because of the doctors and nurses and vet techs who understand what a fighter he is.
02:39To the people who've mailed dog toys and dog treats, to the people who've sent little packages just for bucket, to the thousands of people who took the time to talk to Dagwood, thank you.
02:51So, it's amazing what one dog can do.
02:53It's amazing what one dog can do.
02:53The first time that we took him back to the desert, it was his seventh birthday, the second that the tires hit dirt roads.
03:09He wanted to come towards the front of the van, he wanted to come towards the front of the van.
03:13He was just ready.
03:15He was ready to be back out there.
03:22He was just being a dog for the first time in so long.
03:27It's really hard to say, but I really thought that we would be bringing the ashes back to the desert, and not him.
03:36So, going back there was pretty important to the healing process, I think, for all of us.
03:41Every breath Dagwood takes fills up my lungs, too.
03:46Every time he gets up on his own and walks outside.
03:49Anytime Bucket moves just a couple inches closer to him.
03:52Anytime he paws at me with his floppy little feet or covers my face with kisses.
