Republicans in Congress called several Democratic governors to Washington on Thursday to question them over policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The governors of Illinois, Minnesota and New York testified Thursday before the House Oversight Committee, which has been investigating sanctuary jurisdictions.
Transcript
00:01Americans deserve a sensible, humane, and effective immigration policy that reduces illegal immigration while protecting fundamental rights.
00:09Meanwhile, the administration continues to make life works for hardworking Americans in a lot of other ways,
00:14trying to slash Medicaid, Social Security, Medicare, making basic household goods more expensive,
00:20and telling people they just need to do much more with less.
00:23The American people deserve better.
00:24You all have the power to legislate, to investigate this administration's abuse and overreach, and protect the American people.
00:31And I have to say I'm disappointed.
00:32At a crucial inflection point in our nation's history, Congress is choosing to spend its time trying to cast blames on states like Minnesota that have no hand in creating this crisis.
00:42Illinois follows the law, but let me be clear.
00:44We expect the federal government to follow the law, too.
00:47We will not participate in abuses of power.
00:49We will not violate court orders.
00:51We will not ignore the Constitution.
00:54We will not defy the Supreme Court.
00:57We will not take away people's rights to peacefully protest.
01:01We also respect, and expect this administration to respect, the traditions and legal precedent that dictate how and when our National Guard and military are deployed.
01:12States like mine are doing our part, but we can't be expected to fix the broken immigration system.
01:18You know, and the very people who go on cable news and rail about the border are the same ones who torpedo bipartisan legislation each and every time.
01:28So here's my message.
01:30If you truly care about public safety, if you truly care about the economy, if you truly care about human dignity, then sit down, negotiate, have real reform.
01:45And keep your peace out.
02:03This is sweet.
