00:00Good afternoon and a pleasant Thursday to all. I'm Patrick De Jesus and you're watching PTV News Now.
00:11Delivering the stories that matter most. Let's begin with the top headlines shaping today's news.
00:18As the nation solemnly commemorates its 127th Independence Day under the theme
00:24Magkalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan, the Philippine National Police or PNP reaffirmed its unwavering dedication
00:31to the preservation of national sovereignty, democratic ideals, and civic order.
00:37PNP Chief, Police General Nicholas Torrey III emphasized the police's enduring role as a sentinel of liberty
00:44and a custodian of constitutional order. He framed the day not merely as a retrospective observance
00:52but as a living narrative, a continuum of sacrifice, resilience, and collective aspiration.
00:59In alignment with President Ferdinand R. Marcus Jr.'s Bagong Pilipinas vision,
01:04the PNP pledged to intensify its pursuit of a just, disciplined, and secure society
01:10guided by the legacy of those who forged the republic through valor and selflessness.
01:15To safeguard the sanctity of the day's commemorative events,
01:18the PNP deployed approximately 11,000 officers across Metro Manila,
01:24a visible assertion of its commitment to public safety and national solidarity.
01:29The police force called upon the citizenry to embrace vigilance, unity, and historical consciousness
01:35to not only honor the memory of independence, but to embody its enduring spirit
01:40in pursuit of a more dignified and sovereign future.
01:44Framing the Independence Day still as both a solemn tribute and a moral summons,
01:51House Speaker Martin Romualdez called on Filipinos to honor the nation's hard-won freedom
01:57by embracing unity, integrity, and purposeful service to the republic.
02:03In his message for the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence,
02:08Romualdez paid homage to the revolutionary spirit of those who resisted colonial rule,
02:13emphasizing that their sacrifice laid the cornerstone of a sovereign and democratic nation.
02:19He urged citizens to view the holiday not as a mere historical observance,
02:24but as a call to action to protect liberty, strengthen democratic values,
02:29and uplift the lives of future generations.
02:32He affirmed,
02:33U.S. President Donald Trump's order to bring in the National Guard and the Marines to the LA protest
03:01against ICE immigration raids was meant to not only curb the street demonstrations,
03:07but more importantly, to strike fear and worry on the protesters and those intending to join,
03:13it did not.
03:14As the downtown LA curfew ordered by Mayor Karen Bass entered its second night,
03:20some 200 demonstrators had since been taken into custody.
03:24Still, the numbers of demonstrators did not dwindle, but instead grew.
03:29The LAPD had their hands busy arresting curfew violators,
03:33restraining them in zip ties.
03:35Most of those snub gave themselves up peacefully and did not put up a struggle.
03:41After the curfew took effect last night,
03:43the downtown Los Angeles protests had spread like wildfire across the U.S.
03:48in Denver, Omaha, Nebraska, Boston, Chicago, New York, even in Ruby Red, Texas,
03:55where anti-ice raid protests spread like wildfire in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston,
04:02plus in Santa Ana in Orange County, and in San Francisco.
04:07In the jeweler district of downtown LA,
04:09shop owners decided not to take chances on potential clashes on the second night of the curfew,
04:15leading to the No Kings Day of Nationwide protest this Saturday.
04:20The planned nationwide event seeks to counter President Donald Trump's planned military parade
04:26celebrating the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary and his birthday.
04:33That concludes this afternoon's news.
